BJORK Icelandic Queen
This season's unrefned trend takes you north to the highlands of Iceland, totally reminding us of the avant musician Bjork. With the release of her latest album Biophilia, it only seemed ftting to dedicate a shoot entirely to her. Our team pulled pieces with just the right amount of funk to translate the singer's signature style. In the Icelandic mountain ranges, traditional folk wear more layers because of the cold. Being strong in the decorative arts, they tend to wear sweaters with intricate patterns and embroidery. Besides the breathtaking scenery, rustic workwear dominates. Combined with a feminine touch, we took traditional Icelandic wear and put an urban spin on it by adding a faux fur stole, vintage metallic jacket, suede booties and one killer model (Katie Booth). To recreate our rugged glam Bjork-inspired looks, rethink everything. It's all about repurposing. Give new use to a fur stole and wear it as a headdress or rock a bow tie neckline top backwards for an interesting look for the back and front. Another necessary key ingredient is layering. Layer, layer and more layers! Keep in mind that this look is indeed about layering, but layering untraditionally (ex: top, jacket, vest as opposed to top, vest, jacket). Pile on pieces in a way no one would expect, but make sure within all that disorder there is some fundamental principle that ties your look together. Order within disorder is what this rugged revival is all about. Bjork's use of layers to give volume to her petite frame is noticeably rooted in her home country. Their necessity to dress warm has become a part of her defning fashion style. Ultimately, we created a multitude of head-to-toe looks heavily inspired by our chosen icon of the month, Bjork. This look can be perfect for any age, but this shoot was tailored to the 40-to-50 year old working woman in an urban setting. She's chic, sophisticated, fashion forward and not afraid to take risks- kind of like Bjork.
