Needless to say, all of us are selfish to some extent or the other. However when in a relationship it is no longer a question of- “what’s in it for ME”? Rather focus shifts to “what’s in it for US”. You have to start thinking about how any decision that you take will affect you, your partner and the relationship that you share.
Selfishness is basically putting your own needs before that of anybody else. Selfish people think only about their self interests come what may. Their prime focus is on self-gratification and their own needs above those of everybody else. Selfishness concerns about only pleasing oneself. Such people want to be always right, at whatever cost and time.
A classic example of being selfish is when you want to do something your way or go to a place you like even if your partner wants to do something different or does not like the place that you do. A typical selfish person would instead of meeting her partner half way, start sulking as soon as her partner moots a different idea. The partner may eventually agree to his girlfriend’s idea which may cheer her up momentarily. However at the end of the day such instances will leave the man wondering whether it would be worth his while to pursue a relationship with a spoilt lady brat!
Rather than insisting on doing what you like when your partner has different idea- it would a good idea to talk about places which both of you like to go or things which both of you like to do. That way you will be showing your “adjusting nature� to your partner. He will realize that you are someone who can adapt herself to needs of a situation rather than sticking to her guns come what may!
EGO
Another problem with selfish people is their huge ego. Selfishness in relationships does not work- so does not ego. It is ok to lose an argument with your partner once in a while- he may be right after all. Losing an argument is by no means a sign of weakness. In any case it has got nothing to do with the degree of affection and love your partner has for you. And this is something that happens all the time to all the people around us. Take it in your stride and forget your ego when an argument happens.
APOLOGY
Lastly there is nothing wrong in offering an apology- When two people are involved there are bound to be arguments, misunderstandings and reconciliations. The magic word which works wonders here is “SORRY�. When you are in the wrong, never hold yourself back. There is no point in defending yourself against a man you love. Instead apologize and move on.
Good relationship like a good friendship cannot exist when there is selfishness in relationships. It is important for you as the girl to take the lead and be your natural,
selfless person to impress your man.
