Moonlight - AROH Unit 2

The Moon

In the nineteenth century art, the moon within landscape painting with it’s rural areas is very common. There are different kinds of ways in which the moon is represented within the paintings like the within a field or a rustic farm, a broad horizon, a full moon rising and a thin crescent moon setting. The use of the moon within the nineteenth century landscape art were used to explore a broad range of ideas which included industrialization, urbanization and materialism. For example the moon can represent emotions and feelings of spirituality and was used by artists to communicate their ideas of humanities existence on the earth. The moon was far away and unknown and that was similar to peoples feelings on how they felt in the world itself in that is it hard to grasp why we are on this earth. Typically artists associated with romanticism used the moon to create these feelings and moods. This is something that I will explore in my work.

Joseph Wright of Derby: ‘Experiment on a Bird in an Air Pump’ - 1768

As part of my research into this theme I would like to focus on a painting which contains direct links to the moon.

Joseph Wright of Derby: Joseph Wright is an English landscape painter who was active in the years 1734 - 1797. Wright is one of the most important painters of the late 18th Century. Joseph Wright of Derby has been acclaimed as “the first professional painter to express the spirit of the industrial Revolution”. Although, Joseph Wright started as a local portraitist, he quickly moved to paintings which involved scientific and industrial scenes. Wright’s use of chiaroscuro within his works is very notable due to his subjects mostly being candle-lit. However another subject that he regularly painted were moonlit scenes, one of which I will analyse now. Wright was active in the years of Enlightenment. This is when natural philosophers believed that it will bring light into dark ages which consisted of dark superstition and political tyranny. Science and light are tools which can be used within Enlightenment also known as ”The Age of Reason”

This one of Joseph Wright’s painting which is set in a moonlit lake. Similar to this painting, I will analyse “Experiment on a Bird in an Air Pump” which also has a full moon. Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 – 1797) A Moonlit Lake by a Castle

Joseph Wright of Derby: ‘Experiment on a Bird in an Air Pump’ - 1768 This is one of the many paintings Joseph Wright painted which was set in a candle-lit scene. This is a painting depicts a science experiment with supposedly wealthy men. It is set in a domestic setting where a men in the centre has pimped air out of the large glass flask containing the bird to create vacuum. The window on the far left of the painting, a moon is shown which shows the moonlit sky outside the window. This scene is set in a full moon night which is why I choose to do this painting. The traits of ’The Enlightenment’ dissolved in the crisis of the French revolution therefore making way for Romanticism to take its place. The art movement involved heightened emotions believed in heroic success which showed humanity as puny and subservient to nature.

Joseph Wright of Derby: ‘Experiment on a Bird in an Air Pump’ - 1768 In the centre of the painting, a modern scientist is drawn. He wears a long red robe with flowy long locks. This is an appearance of a wizard almost where the scientist is performing magic. The scientist has his hands over the air pump which holds bird. In addition, the scientist has his hand in a gesture towards us which is almost Asking it’s viewers a questions. His hand is in motion to suck the oxygen out which would cause the bird to die. This could depict the scientist as a god which holds power over death or life suggesting it to be human drama.

The setting of this painting is set to be in perfect chiaroscuro due to it set during the night, in a moonlit setting. It is dramatic and is an representation for the Lunar society where it’s members (Wright’s friends) met each month to discuss and unfold scientific experiments which is what ‘The Enlightenment’, The age of Reason meant. It is was in the moonlit setting the members could go home which is what the society’s name relates too. Beside the window, a boy awaits near the birds cage almost waiting to see if the bird would die and if not would it go back to it’s cage. He is uncertain about what is to happen.

In contrast to the people around the experiment, a pair of lovers are seen gazing at each other rather than the experiment unfolding before them perhaps to say love is blind.

In the foreground, at the centre we see the only light source which illuminates everyone in the room. The lamp has a candle as well as a pickled skull. These objects depict symbolic meaning which portrays the inevitable death and the transience of life. Two young girls at the front of the crowd, are concerned as well as distressed about their pet bird. A supposed father is comforting it’s offspring, trying to explain the hardships of life. Furthermore, on the right a philosopher is sat down, who has a troubled expression on hos face. This could depict the consequences of this new knowledge reminding us that science can be used by good and evil.

JMW Turner, The Fighting Temeraire – 1839 Similar to the painting, ‘Experiment on a Bird in an Air pump” I found another painting which looks at the moon with similar aspects. However, this painting is used in a romantic allegorical way.

JMW Turner Joseph Mallord William Turner (JMW), is an English romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist who spent most of his life in England. Turner has exhibited at the Royal Academy and his work contained diverse history, literature and myth. He is known for his expressive colourisation, imaginative landscapes and turbulent but violent marine paintings. As JMW Turner was romantic painter, some of his work related to it’s more serious predecessor which was Neoclassicism. In Neoclassicism artists focused on history and detail whereas Romanticism shows the self glorification, divinity in nature, nature itself and most importantly emotion. It is said that Turner used a new style of painting by using color intensifying emotion in portraying the passing of events.

JMW Turner. The Fighting Temeraire - 1839

This painting is based on a true story which Turner fuels into making an emotional and poetic elegy painting. A warship called “Temeraire” is stowed to the supposedly Thames by a steam tug to be broken into scrap. It is said, the artist turns the final journey of this warship into a ‘mournful hymn’. The warship played a huge role in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 therefore this painting had a strong patriotic streak.

JMW Turner. The Fighting Temeraire - 1839 This painting was very widely based on contrasts within this painting. Contrasts such as sail versus steam, dark forms versus pale and cool colours against warm. The ship which is been lead by a steam tug towards the dying sun blazes on the right hand side of the painting. This composition divides the painting in two halves due to the mast-tops leads diagonally towards bottom right where the sun stands ablaze. This shows that ship is being drawn towards it’s doom which is the ominous, dark buoy in the bottom right. The smoke tug which is supposed to carry the ship to it’s doom is skilfully placed at the front of warship. The smoke trail is cutting through the Temeraire dramatically therefore the elongated effect of the smoke to show the importance of this steam tug.

The blazing sun shows the end of the ships time. This could also symbolise a passing which can be seen by the setting sun. A crescent is also present in this painting supposedly to represent the new era of the steam taking place of the passing of age of sail. As the Temeraire ship trails off to it’s doom, another ship is in full sail on the horizon this could symbolise the days the Temeraire was in sail and it’s glory days. The whiteness within this painting stands out almost drawing attention to it’s good days.

The Stages of Life, Casper David Friedrich 1835 Another painting which looks at the moon in a romantic way is this one

Casper David Friedrich Casper David Friedrich was a German romantic landscape painter who is considered to be the most important painter of his era. His main focus when painting was nature which invokes an emotional response to the natural world. Born at the Baltic Sea, Friedrich studied at Copenhagen but came to be in the growing disillusionment with materialistic society giving rise to a new appreciation of spirituality. His childhood was troubled and not a easy life. Furthermore, when given the opportunity to travel to Rome, he refused due to him thinking that it might corrupt the purity of his artworks. Friedrich’s works are drawn from imagination although his studies are very detailed from the nature. In addition, Casper David’s work includes richness in symbolism and spirituality.

The Stages of Life, Casper David Friedrich - 1835 “The Stages of Life” is an allegorical painting by Casper David Friedrich which forms a sort of mortality and on the transience of life. The painting is set on a sea shore and shows in the foreground an aged man with his back turned to the viewers, waling towards two adults and two children on a hilltop overlooking a harbour. Although this scene is imaginary, the scene is set at the harbour in Greifswald which is the town of Friedrich’s birth. All figures and objects have a symbolic meaning. This artwork was painted in 1835 where the artist had a stroke showing his state of mind at the brink of death.

The Stages of Life, Casper David Friedrich - 1835 The painting represents the four stages of life. It represents childhood, youth, maturity and old age. Each figure and objects contributes to this fact.

There are 5 ships present in this painting. Each supposedly representing the passing of life and it’s stages. The Ships symbolize the voyage of life. This shown by the central ship ending it’s journey because it’s nearing the harbor. This could represent the artist’s end in life time as he was suffering from a stroke when in progress of making the painting. Furthermore, the two smaller ships are supposedly fishing boats whereas the ships further in the back, is fully rigged, furling it’s sails. The last ship, within the painting is fully set and is still sailing. This could symbolize the ships journey and the end as well.

Symbols of death are presented into this painting. The hauled in nets and the upturned boats could could represent death. These are placed in the foreground which could draw in the viewer closer and emphasize on the purpose of this painting which is to show the stages of life.

The children which represent the childhood stage of life, are seen to be holding a Swedish flag. This could represent the artist, Friedrich’s deep affection for his children as well as portraying his birth in this country.

Like a typical landscape contemporary artists, Friedrich was not interested in the magnificence of sunlight but instead focused on moonlight, evening and winter which invokes transformation such as stillness and silence reminding us of mortality. Furthermore, most of Casper’s painting have symbolism of infinity and unknown. Due to Friedrich having to face a traumatic childhood which was filled with death, it could possibly show his unsureness with time and where it will lead him.

Caspar David Friedrich, Two Men Contemplating the Moon c.1830

Caspar David Friedrich, Two Men Contemplating the Moon - c.1830 This painting as well as two different paintings which are similar, are romantic paintings which feature two dark figures. In this painting the dark figures are contemplating the moon and whereas the sky is illuminating contrast to the atmosphere. The scene is set in a dark dangerous forest and is set around the crescent moon right in the center. Romanticism is about the desire to see everything more than life. Romantic painters resists the neat categorization and has a range of meanings and symbolism to express emotions and self expression. This art movement expressed freedom in depicting, raw and suppressed feelings therefore the landscapes where larger, brooding and more threatening.

Caspar David Friedrich, Two Men Contemplating the Moon - c.1830 On the left, in the foreground of the painting are two men. Their backs are facing it’s audience and seem to be in deep conversation. They are dressed in dark colors and formal, elegant garments which could suggest wealth. Both contemplate the moon intensely and this painting was painted during the Napoleonic Wars. Furthermore, the men within the painting are depicted to be Friedrich himself and his pupil, August Heinrich. The costumes worn by these figure represent the rebellion within the Napoleon regime and attempts to show the distaste with the new regimes. The sky is painted in pastels colors and is drawn with the crescent moon, The use of the moon creates silhouettes in the foreground and it makes a contrast on the figures and the oak tree. The moon however is further back into the painting creating a vast amount of space and also giving the illusion of cliff. The moon in this painting could represent the danger lurking within it’s shadows.

An intimidating oak stand, uprooted and slanted towards the right side of the painting. It’s brunches are reaching out and almost consuming the whole of the right side of the painting. The brooding oak can represent the new Napoleonic regimes and how they threatening to change the city. The monochromatic shades od brown and grey suggest nightfall.

This painting emphasizes on the spirituality in nature and how tiny we are compared to the earth. Furthermore, they also command the presence of sublime which links the past, present and future in the cycle of time through human observers.

Van Gogh The Starry Night, - 1889 Moving on from Romanticism, the moon was used by expressionist artists of the 19th century to express personal moods and feelings.

Vincent Van Gogh Vincent Van Gogh was an post impressionist painter who is one of most famous and influential figures in Western art history. Van Gogh’s works include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits which contain bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork. The artist suffered from multiple mental disorders such as depression. During these times, Van Gogh’s work also began to incorporate olive trees, wheat fields and sunflowers. However, he suffered from psychotic episodes and delusions which were worrying. But, it is said that he neglected his physical health and drank heavily. Vincent Van Gogh died in the 1890 by committing suicide, by shooting himself in the chest with a revolver.

The Starry Night, Van Gogh - 1889 This is an oil on canvas painting which was painted by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh. This painting is the depiction of the outside scene from the asylum at Saint-Remy. It is said to be the view outside the window from his bedroom. Van Gogh was very fond of night time which can be seen in this painting. The night sky is filled with wild and energetic colours whereas the village below is silent and calm. Through this painting, Van Gogh depicts a different way of presenting impressionism rather than nature. The circles and constant use of brushwork makes the painting look life-like and almost moving. Van Gogh stayed up three nights in a row to finish this painting because he believed that “more alive than the day”. Gogh has created similar works such as Starry Night over the Rhone and Café Terrace at Night.

The Starry Night, Van Gogh - 1889 The choice of colour within this painting is very repeated. For example the yellows and white within this painting is used to represent the stars and the moon with the blending of dark blue to represent the dark night sky. At the time Van Gogh was located to be at an asylum where he was supposedly suffering from poisoning or type of brain disease which explains the use of colour in this painting.

The use of the colours, white and yellow create a spiral effect which draws attention to the sky. However, the presence of the cypress tress and church tower break the composition of the repeated palette of spirals and lines. It could be suggested that the use of these colours to reflect the emotions of the artist itself.

In conclusion, the painting Starry Night interprets the depiction of hope. Van Gogh was trying to portray that even in the darkness of the night, there is still hope and the moon is a form of light. Also, the stars which are filing the night sky, is a form of guide through the darkness. This could suggest the recovery of Van Gogh through his illnesses which could suggest his hope. Furthermore, it could portray peace at death which can be seen by the bold use of colours within this painting.

CafÊ Terrace at Night, Van Gogh – 1888

Although it is hard to see the moon in this painting, the nocturnal scene is relevant for my theme.

Café Terrace at Night, Van Gogh - 1888 Van Gogh painted this image during his visit in Arles with a nocturnal background. This is an picturesque work where the viewer enjoys the charm of this surrounding without any moral concern. The painting shows the exterior of a café in Arles. This is one of Gogh’s most beautiful painting which achieved him light and peace. This is an oil painting which was not signed by Van Gogh however is mentioned in three letters. The letters were addressed to his sister which expressed his excitement whilst making this artwork. The characteristics of the painting such as the graphic texture of the street’s cobblestones invite the viewer to take a closer look. Furthermore, the white tables and the blue night sky both reflect similar shapes of the spheres.

Café Terrace at Night, Van Gogh - 1888 Van Gogh used very thick layers of paint to the blue sky without smoothing over the surface. The night sky looks similar to patch work formation which he sometimes achieved due to his technique of layering the impasto and not drawing them. Furthermore, the blue’s within the sky and the yellow of café create an harmonious contrast within the painting which gains a sense of peace. The yellow glare which is reflected of the gaslight onto the horses and passers-by shows an exaggerated light within the painting. Typical impressionists artists would capture the scene as a whole however Van Gogh experiments and only uses it for decorative and expressive effect.

At the foreground of the painting, Gogh creates a complex form of perspective which catches the attention of it’s viewers. The gutter is placed right in the centre of the diagonal lines which can be seen with outer row of table and the pavement on it’s right.

Van Gogh’s use of colour is very interesting within this painting. The blue of the night sky, more subtle lighting from the stars and the yellow of the exterior of the café, more artificial light creates creates a striking contrast due to the striking colour of the awning.

The Snake Charmer, Henri Rousseau - 1907

Moving on from Expressionism, this next image uses the moon to create a mysterious mood.

Henri Rousseau Henri Julien Felix Rousseau was a French postimpressionist painter in the Naïve or Primitive manner. Before his career in painting, he was atoll and tax collector however left his job to seriously paint by the age of 49. Henri Rousseau was born into the family of plumbers. His works include jungles scenes even though he never left France or visited the jungle and his inspiration came from children books and botanical gardens in Paris. Rousseau is known be a self-taught artist whose works are now considered to be of high artistic quality. He has exhibited in the Salon des Independent’s however his work was not placed prominently, but his work drew an increasing following over the years after these exhibitions, and he was influential to the development of modern art.

The Snake Charmer, Henri Rousseau - 1907

This painting was commissioned by the mother of the painter Robert Delaunay who was part of the contemporary French avant-garde. The painting depicts a mysterious figure playing her flute who summons serpents within the jungle. In the whole of the painting, the jungle of vegetation is drawn to be an applique of patchwork fabric which gives a sense of a two-dimensional composition. The painting has a dream like sensual quality.

The Snake Charmer, Henri Rousseau - 1907 At the top of the canvas, a silvery moon hangs in a pale blue lit sky. It illuminates the edges where it’s light falls. This could show the amount of planning Rousseau did before choosing the designated patterns and colours deliberately. Rousseau’s painting technique was different to other artists due to his use of layering instead of mixing colours. In this painting different mediums of colour to shows different shades of green which creates depth and space.

At the bottom, far to right, jewellike leaves and flowers create a sense of harmony and depth. This does not show linear perspective but shows Rousseau’s unique technique.

A flamingo is drawn at the far left of the painting in the foreground. Furthermore, its drawn in pale pastel colours and seems to be in a transfixed by the women's music just like the snakes. The horizontal ripples on the water enhance the depth but also gives a sense of stillness and dream-like feature of this painting.

The supposed snake charmer can only be seen by the eyes and his silhouette is only available to the viewers eye. Her knees, and undulating hair are seen with a snake around her neck and two dance at her feet. She could either be supposedly eve in the garden of Eden who is unafraid of the wild and it’s dangers.

Fish Magic, Paul Klee - 1925

Paul Klee Paul Klee’s is a Swiss born painter who influenced by expressionism, cubism, surrealism and orientalism. Achieved a high reputation through the architect, Walter Gropius. In his career, Klee explored the effects of using unconventional combinations of pigments, waxes and varnishes painted over a compound of chalk, beeswax and plaster. He has almost 10,000 drawings and paintings which can be dated thoroughly due to his extensive note keeping and graduated from the famous Bauhaus School. His works show Paul Klee’s dry humor as well as childlike perspective. This included personal moods and beliefs therefore his written collections of lectures are very important to modern art which makes them as important as Leonardo da Vinci’s written works for the Renaissance art movement.

Fish Magic, Paul Klee - 1925 This painting depicts the world under water which is colored by watercolors and drawings. It is a series drawings where other series portray fish and other common marine creatures. However, in this painting fishes are amongst human figures and interacting with artefacts and objects of mankind. This painting represents meditation on time. For example, the clock face could suggest human time and the sun and moon representing the vastly greater celestial time. The use of the moon in representing the passing and coming of time allows me to relate this to my theme.

During my research, a range of different posters came to my attention as well. This is one of the examples, I found which really caught my attention. The color scheme of this is very harmonious. It makes it look very professional and has a very neat

The title ’Retro’ is placed very strategically so the audience can get a good look at it even when far away. Furthermore, the color of the title stands out more due to the title just having one color which is white. In addition, the title is bigger than all other text available which makes it stand out more. The gray background with the beige border makes the poster stand out more from the other posters. Furthermore, due to it being a retro/vintage poster the colour is scheme is very helpful in relating to it’s theme and tells us what it’s about. The pink within the poster makes it very put together which is why I think would like to use this technique within my posters too. Also, the poster as a whole, the colors on the van are the same as the colors in the posters which makes the poster very unified.

Poster Analysis The colour scheme within this poster is used cleverly. The use of black to represent the figures hair and glasses gives a sense of realness and very please to the eye. Furthermore, the use of white to portray the figures skin and gold which are used to show her jewelry and her features makes it very life like. I like the composition of this painting and I would like to use this within my poster as well. For example, I could change the background from black to a picture of the moon or a moon represented within the paintings.

This is similar however I feel that this is a modern version of the initial poster. I would like to focus on this due to it’s text as well. The text is horizontally placed which makes it reading downwards. This is different to most texts out there and I would like to use this within my poster.

Poster Analysis The first image of a poster to catch my eye was this geometric circle image. The aspects of the circles within this image was very aesthetic which is what I would embed into my poster. Furthermore, the color scheme within this image is very unified. The blues and brown are blended in very well which make the poster very pleasing to the eye. The use of circkles is something that would lend itslf to the thjme of the moon

This is not a poster design but I really liked the concept of this image. The women is dressed in very fancy Victorian clothing and has a supposed hallow or a moon over her head. This could link to the theme of my exam which is moon. For example, in place of the women, I could place Venus the Goddess of love and I could replace the circle with the moon to relate it with my theme. Furthermore, I could replace the decorated circle with Van Gogh Starry Night moon which shows two paintings I am using.

Poster Inspiration 1 After researching a range of posters, I chose to recreate some of the posters in my terms. My first poster was inspired by this image found on google through the Pinterest website. The circular effect through two different images gave a very sophisticated and professional approach to the image itself. To create this I used Photoshop which allowed me to create something similar to this effect.

To start of this background of my poster, I choose “Two Men Contemplating the Moon to choose as the background. Due to the moon being a important object within this painting allowed me to chose this painting. I then chose to divide this painting in half and only chose the half where the moon sits right in the center.

After I decided on the painting, I then decided to start the circular effect which was present in my inspired photo. I added multiple circles in a circle and broke them up within the the circles which a gave a broken and rearranged effect which is what is shown in my inspired photo. I used illustrator to create these lines and then pasted them onto my Photoshop file to help where the cut up pieces of the moon will be placed.

To create the effect which I saw within my inspired photo, I needed two pictures which would allow me to gain the designated effect. For my second picture I chose a clear picture of the moon, this linked in very well with my theme due to it being based on the moon itself. Next, I then placed the moon picture behind the stencil of the circular effect which allowed me to create that effect more easier.

I also chose to add a red circle in the Centre of this to balance out the painting in the background but also reflect the moon. The color red could reflect the dangers lurking within as not all paintings reflect the ray of hope.

The end effect of this recreation achieved a very professional effect. I really liked how this turned out. To further my development, the pieces which lay within the side of the painting, I changed the opacity of each pieces so they could show the background image which is a painting within my research.

Poster Inspiration 2 My second inspiration was based on these which I chose to combine within one. The first poster was a portrait although edited to be a cartooned outline. This seems to be a good portrait which then gave me the idea to use one of my paintings within my research therefore I chose “The Fighting Termeraire as one of my chosen paintings. I chose this painting due to it’s moonlit setting however there is no moon within the painting which then led me onto my next chosen image. In my second inspiration photo a circle almost similar to the moon. This then gave me the idea to include a moon within this practice therefore giving me this ending effect.

To start off, I found a picture of the moon and placed it within Photoshop. Next I found a picture of the painting I will use which is “The Fighting Termeraire. I then placed both of these images on top, the moon under and the painting on top. I changed the opacity showing the moon as well as my chosen painting.

When I changed the opacity of the painting the image was not as clear on top which made change the contrast levels of the painting, making it darker therefore making it easier to be seen within the moon image.

Moonlight – A ray of Hope. My theme regarding this project is ‘The Moon’, therefore I chose the name “Moonlight – A ray of Hope” as my exhibition name. I think keeping a unique name for my exhibition will attract more audiences. Moonlight: the first part of my title is “Moonlight”. U chose this word due to it’s direct association with the moon. I wanted to have the moon added into the title somehow therefore I chose to change the word a little and add moonlight into the title. As I researched paintings which involved the moon, some of them included settings which were set in the moonlight for example, “experiment on a bird in an air pump” which is where my inspiration comes from. A ray of Hope: the second part of my title “a ray of Hope’ is similarly taken from a painting I researched which is “The fighting Termeraire”. Although this painting contains a crescent moon which symbolizes that night is going to be coming soon which will then pass into a another bright day. This then inspired me to use the short phrase “a ray of hope” showing that the moons light is a shot of hope.

After deciding on my title for the exhibition, I wanted to add this to my poster however I did not know which font would look best within my poster therefore here are some of the following fonts that I found which I could develop and then add into my poster.

Due to my title divided in two parts with a word and a phrase. I first chose to see if a font would look better with the word “Moonlight”. I really like the look of this font and I would like to add it to my poster. When I put this font within Photoshop I realized that the font could hardly be seen Within the poster. Overall although I liked this font and the way it looked, it did not look the best with my poster therefore I wont be using this font as my final font design within my poster. In addition, I still have not tried to use the second part of my title within this font as well.

The next font I found was this one. This font is a simple cursive writing which I thought would look elegant and sophisticated within my poster. This is what it looked like once installed within the poster. Overall the font within the poster looked okay. I did not like the way the word “Moonlight” looked within the poster as I want it to stand out more from the phrase. However the phrase looked very good within that font and the poster. However, I would prefer if I changed the space where the phrase is placed. For example if I placed the phrase just below the geometric moon. I think that this made it much more professional and sophisticated.

Finally I found a font which looked interesting enough to use within my poster. However, as I wanted the word “Moonlight” to be much bigger than the phrase. I placed it in the center making it bigger and overlapping the other side too. However, because the font was black you could not see the half of the font which then allowed me to change the font’s color to white on the other side.

In the end I chose to change the phrase into a different font and chose to add the previous font. However, a similar problem was faced because of the color therefore allowing me to change the color of the font again.

Lastly, this is the final look of the font and I am very pleased with the outcome. The word “Moonlight” stands out a lot more than the phrase which is what I was aiming for. Furthermore, although the phrase smaller than the other still stands towards it’s audience with it’s unique, simple cursive font. Overall, I like the look of this font and how it looks within my poster.

In addition to a poster and a title, I would also like to create a logo which can be recognized easily with just one glance. A logo could help make our exhibition more professional and realistic therefore giving me a strong reason to create one. In relation to creating a logo, I looked at existing logos which will inspire me to create my own logo.

A pictorial marked logo sort of looks like this one. This logo shows the literal meaning of “YouTube” which is a video sharing website. The play button is included within this logo which shows the video aspect of the website within this logo. Next the rectangle makes a button of some sort and also show a window of video watching too. I could use this by choosing the moon itself within my logo as a means of advertisement.

This is a combination logo which shows a orange and the name of the brand. Fanta is a orange fizzy juice drink which explains the use of the fruit and the name on the logo. I could use this by using the moon in the place of the orange and add the name of my exhibition in the middle of it.

This is a mascot logo which shows a man and the short form of the company name. “KFC” stands for Kentucky Fried Chicken which is literally what it means. I used this logo as my title phrase could be shortened just like this logo and used within my logo.

To start off my logo, I wanted to embed all the inspiration I found within the existing logos within my logo too. Therefore I added a moon which relates to the “YouTube” logo which was the literal meaning of video-sharing website. My exhibition is about the moon and the paintings related to it therefore I chose to add the moon which was present within my poster only as a geometric shape. This shape was pleasing to the eye therefore allowing me to add it within my logo too. After adding a moon, I then took inspiration from the “KFC” logo which shows the company’s name in a short format. I chose to include my first worded title “Moonlight” but shortened my “A ray of Hope” phrase subtitle to “AROH” and used the same font’s as my poster to add into my poster. This shows which company this logo is for effortlessly without giving too much information out.

The next logo I looked at was the “Fanta” logo. The use of an orange which shows what the drink is about inspired me to include a color pallet within my logo as well. This shows that my exhibition is about the paintings which include the moon as setting a scene within the paintings. I adjusted the pallet for it’s aesthetic for the eye as well as making sure the title does not get covered.. As the pallet was removed from the internet, a paint brush was also present at the below the color pallet however I moved this paint brush under my title to give the “Moonlight” title a better emphasis.

Final Poster This is the final poster which I finished making through Photoshop. Each object or symbol is related to my theme which is the ‘Moon’. This poster overall was a long process to achieve as a lot of the aspects had to be strictly related to the moon. However, in the end I still managed to make this poster as professional and sophisticated as I could. My title, “Moonlight – A ray of Hope” relates directly to the theme of moon. Moonlight is the light of the biggest star the moon which then leads me onto the phrase. The phrase is relates

to my theme because in some paintings due to it being a ray of hope. Furthermore, the geometric shape at the center of the poster has a faded moon which again is a relation to my theme with half a painting also containing the moon which gives me the perfect reason to this within my poster. Moreover, I’ve also made a logo directly relating to my theme too. The use of this poster would make a perfect advertisement choice for my exhibition. I will also have a leaflet and ticket hand band to advertise my exhibition.

Leaflet Analysis

The pink column with the white background makes looking at the page much more interesting. Furthermore, the artist work has a bigger window

The front and back page of a museum leaflet has a unified color which is blue. I like how this gives a professional look for the leaflet and I would like to try and have which then prolongs onto a different page too. something similar to this This three page into two pages makes the color within my leaflet. look of the pages more exciting as well as In addition, there were small prompts at the top right of the leaflet. The prompts can guide the viewers as to where and what their looking at. I would like to these prompts within my leaflet. The slanted text with highlighted shape make it stand out more amongst the tons of writing which is present within this page. I would like to use this within my leaflet as I think it would catch the eye of the audiences more.

making it’s audiences more interested in the event. These are the types of pages I need in my exhibition leaflet therefore I will try to attempt this technique within my leaflet too.

The different colored table with dates is very unique as there are important dates within this table. The different color makes it stand out and makes the audiences more aware of the dates.

The outline of a building with a contrasting but aesthetically pleasing color makes the leaflet give a sense of personality. This somehow also makes it look professional and graphically pleasing for the eye. Collage of pictures with little information on the second page makes this leaflet have a aesthetic look. Having too much writing can make the leaflet look boring which would make my audiences not as interested into my exhibition. Because this is a art museum this collage could be interesting within my leaflet and could have pictures of my paintings.

Cursive writing with different sized letters, at the start of the page has a title as a quote which makes it different from other leaflets I have seen. This is a unique way of catching audiences eyes without boring them as well as giving out simple information such as a direct quote from a artist which could be used within my leaflet too. Furthermore, cutouts of people and tourist attractions could also make the pages within the leaflet more interesting.

Through this existing image of a leaflet and the way it’s folded. As a means of research, I further folded types of folds for leaflets and which one would look best for my leaflet.

The first fold I researched was the most common one which was the half fold. This is pretty easy to achieve therefore allowed me to view each page effortlessly. However, I couldn't do anything more creative with this way of a fold therefore I chose to look into more folds for a clear insight.

Types of Folds Double gate fold is a elegant leaflet fold which allows the viewers to easily view the inside as well as the outside effortlessly. Furthermore, I fond that the front two portions could be used very creatively by me.

For example, a very large painting could be placed at the front of this fold to attract the viewer better and see what my exhibition is about. This is a accordion fold. All the pages can be seen in one The ‘Z’ fold is another common fold which glance which is used on leaflets. I liked this fold as it has would excite the a unique folding style. Moreover, when viewer more about held in the hand all contents can be seen the exhibition. fully in the viewers view. This is also the case when not held in the hand and is made Furthermore, I can also use the back of the pages to stood on a surface. Both ways the inside give more information and would not require any can be seen which could be appealing for effort from the audience. it’s audience.

Final Leaflet

To start off my poster, I chose to do it in PowerPoint due to wanting large amounts of pages within my leaflet. As I want to make a leaflet and include very important information about my exhibition, bigger pages could have more space to spread information creatively. Front page: On my front page, I have the background of my poster. This makes it unified and gives a professional look. However, I changed the writing which shows the key dates and timings as well as adding names of the artists which are going to be present. Furthermore, all the text present, excluding the title, are highlighted in different hues of blue. I chose this to be the colour blue as I imagined my exhibition to have the tones of blue within the walls too. Therefore, I made the writing tones of blue which unifies the leaflet to other sources.

Page 2: when analysing different leaflet a collage was present of an different event however I chose to use this technique by using it to display the artist I researched and the paintings which are going to be included within this exhibition. This gives my readers a better straight forward insight as to what this exhibition is about and what will be in it. This page carries onto page 3 however only half the page is covered whereas the other half goes onto a small contents page. This content page is a small guide as to what pages are present within the leaflet which makes it easier for viewers to view the leaflet without wasting too much time.

Page 4 – 7: on these pages I've displayed and talked about the artists and given basic facts about the paintings which are going to be present within the exhibition. Furthermore, the layout of these pages have been inspired from the existing leaflets for example the transitions of 2 pages within 3. The double sided pages are divided into 3 pages which makes it aesthetically pleasing for the viewers eye. This could further interest my viewers and allowing them to know more about the exhibition.

Pages 8 and Page 11: all my pages for the leaflet regarding the paintings contain two pages which show the artist as well as the paintings facts. However, due to there being large amounts writings I felt that my viewers would get bored looking at these pages. To excite and interest my viewers more another technique inspired from the existing leaflet was the outline of a building. I chose to do this to instead aspects within the paintings. For example, the painting The Fighting Temeraire is based on the last days of a ship. Therefore, I chose to outline the ship and put it onto the page making a consistent and unified use of decoration. This makes my boring pages more exciting.

Page 10: as I'm doing two painting from the same artist, I preferred to have one page blank and simple therefore I used the background of a moon which relates to my theme as a way of making my pages more entertaining. Pages 18, 19, 20: from pages 18 – 19 is a floor plan for the better understanding for my viewers. I chose to do this because due to me having two floors and for the convenience of my viewers. This will help plan the route my audience will take when in the exhibition. Within these floor plans, it shows all the rooms which are available within my exhibition so if a viewer wants go to toilet they could easily use the floor plan to find the toilets without consuming any time.

Moreover, on page 20 is a map and directions on how to get to the exhibition museum. There are options which show which transport is quickest and which one can actually get to the museum itself.

Entry Wristband

For the colour of my wrist band, I went with black as it was a good colour which related to the moon perfectly. Furthermore, I made this wristband online which didn’t allow me to use my normal titled font however I found a similar font and changed to a contrasting grey colour. This makes it relatable for my theme as the moon is grey and black makes a good unified colour.

As a modern viewpoint, instead of normal paper tickets I decided to do rubber wristband ticket which grants you access to the exhibition. This was easier to make and much more stylish as not a lot of exhibition tickets have such kind of entry tickets.

My title phrase was also included within this wristband showing clearly where it’s from. The look of this wristband turned out to be professional which could interest younger audiences as well as older to come visit the museum. Also, I included my logo within the wristband as well.

Overall, this was a different process from normal ticket processes and I really liked the way this turned out. I like how this wristband could attract younger as well as older audiences due to the modern approach towards the entry tickets as the wristbands are only available for concerts and festivals.

Intention: I will now make an exhibition space which will display my paintings which I have researched. I will do this by using an online website to create a floor plan and make it 3d as well. Furthermore, to gain inspiration and ideas I have researched existing floor plans which will help me better within my exhibition as well.

The use of marble on the frame of the doors which makes the entrance of the room stand out. Also, using marble makes it look grand and pleasing to the eye. This has inspired me to use marble in my exhibition module on the door frame as the use of marble gives a striking appearance.

The octagonal shape of the room in the middle and multiple rooms coming out of the octagon makes it a unique layout of the gallery. I will use this layout into my module for its uniqueness and luxurious faรงade.

The display of the painting is on a red wall and the information of the painting is on the side of the painting. I also like the rope barriers showing the importance of the paintings. I will use this technique in my exhibition module to make my exhibition module look more organised and sophisticated.

The octagonal dome as the ceiling gives big and imposing feel. The detail on the ceilings shows the rooms scale as having a immense scale.

After the octagonal shaped room, each has a room on the curve, which holds a entrance. Similar to this, there are 4 rooms the same layout. The rooms are in a rectangle shape, with a linear ceiling, which shows the size of the National Gallery.

The national gallery holds a luxurious central hall which shows its posh and classy interior. The ceiling also holds detailed patterns with a lot more paintings then other rooms which shows what the place is about.

Rounded arched tympanum with detailed structures of people and patterns at the entrance of the door gives a extravagant and lordly exterior which catches the eyes of the viewers of the gallery.

This corridor in my opinion is very well decorated and stands out most to me in the exhibition. The top of the ceiling is very decorative with a range of sculptures lined on the floor. Furthermore, there are large glass windows placed on the right and far end of the corridor. The windows allow natural lighting which shows striking features of the sculptures which inspired me to supposedly input this into my exhibition.

The geometric pattern of the flooring somehow makes the space more spacious adding more depth to the space present. This gives me an insight as to find patterns which add more depth into my exhibition.

The works displayed create a striking image due to the beige colour of the walls. I liked this technique which accentuates the features of the works which contain gold. Furthermore, the walls are bare of any other writings or decoration giving more attention to the paintings itself. I would like to use this use of colour scheme in my exhibition to as this makes it more professional and elegant. In addition, metal holder are presented in front of the painting. This is a easy way from preventing these artworks from getting damaged. Also, whilst protecting the artworks, the metal holders have information about the artworks which are present. Personally, I really like the set up of this museum due to this arrangement and I would like to use it in my exhibition as well.

Final Exhibition Space This is the exhibition I made and can be seen as a bird’s eye viewpoint. Each area is marked with what each room is meant for with double doors and single doors containing glass which allows viewers to see what is present inside each room. This made it look more elegant and professional which is the look I was aiming for. In this design I have a reception, a book shop, exhibition space, a café on the top with toilets. Reception: in the reception I included a sofa and living room accessories to give the reception a better look. A reception desk is also present within this room so people can inquire and ask questions as well book further meetings. In line with the entrance, is another door which leads to the book shop.

Shop: the second room is a shop which could allow viewers to buy souvenirs and take something with them to remember the exhibition itself. Corridor for upstairs: After the shop is a corridor which leads to the top floor which is where the toilet and the café is placed. The corridor also leads to the exhibition space itself. Within these exhibition spaces I have added plants and a little fountain so as to decorate the room without boring my viewers with just paintings themselves. In addition, I have also added benches for the viewers to spend time and enjoy observing these grand paintings. Both these rooms are created within this design is create depth and have a sense of realism.

Bathroom: I created a men's and women's bathroom which have the same layout but for different genders. Each bathroom have 4 wash basins with 3 cubicles. The 3 cubicle is slightly bigger than the last two and my intention was this to be a “disabled” bathroom too. This is for the convenience of my viewers as well as the staff working within the museum. The bathroom is quite wide and spacious therefore it would avoid queuing on busy days. Café: as a means of relaxation, I created a mini café which my viewers could enjoy after looking around my exhibition. It would be helpful for them if they have a refreshment room therefore adding more realism and personality towards the exhibition itself.
