Tonal final part 2

TONAL

Intentions Using the research that I have gathered on paintings that have strong tonal values, I am now going to make an exhibition based on 10 paintings all of which use tonal modelling to create 3D forms. I intend to create an exhibition model and I will also create a poster and a leaflet to advertise my art exhibition. I will use a number of different pieces of software to create these including Photoshop.

Poster Analysis I am going to analyze some existing poster which were made for a real life exhibitions. I am going to research and take inspiration from these poster and create my own poster through these poster with Photoshop.

The tittle stands out with big bold letters which tells the viewers of this poster what the poster is actually about.

The use of color like yellow, orange and contrasting colors like brown and black, to create shadows makes it more realistic.

The tittle holds the name of the painter in white bold letters with stating the type of genre, which is portrait painting.

The eye catchy colors and the realism of the lady in the background draws the readers attention as to know what the posters about.

Portrait painting Is used to depict a human subject, inspired by either affection or admiration. The image of the lady shows this technique and the unique colors on her eyes make it more eye-catchy and is visually pleasing to the eye.

The creator has made sure to include as much information as possible to show to the viewers/readers what's going on in the poster. For example, included the date of the event so that the viewer of the poster knows when the event is held.

Also, the creator has used the emblem of the gallery itself so as to show where the event is held at.

However, Although the creator has used the relevant information needed to add into a poster, there's very basic detail which could be improved If the creator added the price of the tickets (if there is any price). Furthermore, the creator of this poster should have included the timings of the event so that the customers know when to be there at the event.

In addition, if the creator lessened the exposure of the portrait and/or darkened its contrasting light, the name ‘Mario’ would be visible and the viewers will not have to strain to see the name of the artist without wasting the viewers time.

The use of vibrant colors like yellow, green and blue with a realistic image grabs the attention of the viewers. This then allows the viewers to look more closely at the poster to see what its about.

The depth of this poster is fluent with carefully selected layering of Hockney, the text and the painting attracts to customers visually. Furthermore, the font has been kept the same which makes it effective visually as everything combines effectively.

The real image of Hockney painting shows what will be taking place at the exhibition which will grab the attention of the viewers effectively. David Hockney drawing the picture gives a sense of realism Which gives the impression that the readers will experience when the painting is created.

The emblem of the gallery is shown at the top right corner which shows to the viewers the location of the event. This famous painting is being advertised whilst associating it with the particular gallery.

The color of the texts at the bottom is visible to its viewers giving the impression that it has been thoroughly thought about. This is important because the viewers need to get the correct and essential information. The text is also at a reasonable size so when the viewers are viewing the poster they can see it at a distance too. Ticket information is also given in this poster so when the viewers get online or contact the company for the tickets, they will be given more information regarding the event and what the exhibition is about.

The color of the texts at the bottom is visible to its viewers giving the impression that it has been thoroughly thought about. This is important because the viewers need to get the correct and essential information.

The color of the texts at the bottom is visible to its viewers giving the impression that it has been thoroughly thought about. This is important because the viewers need to get the correct and essential information.

The tittle of this exhibition is ‘DOIG’. It is in bold, white letters which makes it stand out from the background of this poster.

The colors black, blue and green are blended effectively with the text to stand out making it eyecatchy for its viewers.

The tittle is the last name of the artist himself, this shows what will be going on in the exhibition and grab the attention of viewers who know this artist

There’s more information given at the bottom of the tittle which will help the viewers know more about the exhibition although the text is very small making it harder to see it from a distance

The background of this poster is one of Doigs work which shows to the viewers what the exhibition is about.

The emblem of the gallery has been placed on the top right of the corner and is also visible to the viewers showing the location of the event.

Whilst giving the information of the event, they have included the date of when the event is going to be held which makes it easier for the viewers as it is essential they know when to be there at the event.

Contact details as well as the website of the gallery has been included in the poster which makes it easier for the viewers to get more information as well get the opportunity to get the tickets directly.

If the font size was increased a little more and there could've been more information like the telephone number to contact them as some customers might have some questions to ask.

I also took inspiration from recently posted movie posters. This poster is taken from a Bollywood movie which was recently released in 2016. This gave me a newer perspective and helped me better with my research. This poster gives a small insight as to what the plot of the movie is about whilst using the doubleexposure effects. For example, the main protagonist, the man is shown holding a gun and he stands in front of a newspaper article. Furthermore, a lady is then blended into the outline of the main protagonist with a man slightly creeping behind her. I liked this effect because of it’s conspicuous insight of the characters in the movie and I will be using this in my exhibition poster.

This poster contains a lot of writings but the creator has made sure the tittle and the release date of the movie stands out which shows the important information accurately without having to strain your eyes. In addition, the poster has included the logo’s of the sponsored companies. I also really liked how the poster included a line from a newspaper article which is placed above the article. This again gives the audience an understanding of the movie’s plot line. I will be using this in my poster when quoting one of the artist in my poster design. Furthermore, the creator has used a good combination of gold and purple, separating the double exposure effect, which gives a vintage effect to the poster as the movie is set in late 1950’s.

FONT DESIGN I came up with four different titles for my exhibition and picked the one I liked most. This tittle was “Ignis Fatuus”. Moreover I chose Ignis Fatuus because of it’s meaning which is the ”Illusion of Art”. Art is an illusion of realism where Artists like Eugene Gericault and Michelangelo tried to achieve through their artworks. Their illusion of realism is what ’Ignis Fatuus’ means where something is deluding or something is misleading. ’Ignis Fatuus’ comes from Modern Latin where ’Ignis’ means ’fire’ whereas ‘Fatuus’ means ‘foolish’ literally meaning ”foolish fire”. It is widely used for horror stories and can interpreted as an example of ‘false hope’. This is suitable tittle because it links to the idea behind revolutions that do not always bring about positive change. I chose this title because of it’s originality and it uniquely stands out from other exhibition titles.

• Modeling • Radical modeling • Revolutionary Modeling • Ignis Fatuus

FONT DESIGN In this slide, I am showing the font’s I have chosen from the website ‘DaFont’ to use in my posters for this assignment. I chose the 4 fonts that stood to me with which I will further experiment using the Clipping Mask in Photoshop.

Razed; This font I stood out to me because of the way although the letters like ‘F’ in Fatuus is backwards, it still shows what it means giving it a unique effect. Furthermore, ‘Ignis Fatuus’ means illusion of art, the backward-ness of the ‘F’ could link to the back stories of some of the artworks which I have analyzed.

Wild and Grace; I like the way some letters are in capitals whereas the others are in lower cases format. This then highlights the tittle which could be useful as when I use the clipping mask on this font it will be more visible unlike the Organic Elements Font.

Organic Elements; I really like the use of calligraphy in this font which made it unique and very elegant. However, this font is not big enough for a poster tittle. Also, I will not be able to use a clipping mask in this font as the letters are too thin to put in an image.

Snowboarding; this font stood out tome because of it’s boldness and the thickness of it’s letters which could allow me to play a lot better when experimenting with the clipping mask however I do not like how the letters are spaced out which makes it look like everyday writing.

I chose the Font’s ‘Razed’ and ’Wild & Grace’ which will further experiment with when using the clipping mask.

FONT DESIGN

One of the fonts I choose is this one because I think this would look good in my poster. The width of this font is helpful for using clipping mask in Photoshop because I want the image to be visible as the background of my poster is back and white. However, when using a screen shot in Photoshop, it was difficult for me to edit therefore I choose to use the clipping mask separately on each word.

I applied this font into my poster using Photoshop. I quite like the outcome of this font in my poster however the font is not as visible through. My intension regarding this font was for it to match the background of the scene which is the painting by Delacroix “Liberty Leading the People” however, my intension did not go as planned. The word ‘Ignis’ turned out well when blending into Liberty’s upper portion of her dress. However, the word ‘Fatuus’ was hardly visible and did not blend well with the background which was supposedly of the man at her feet. I have decided to experiment with the other font and see how it looks with that font onto my poster and see if my intension works well with that font.

I chose the Font’s ‘Razed’ and ’Wild & Grace’ which will further experiment with when using the clipping mask.

FONT DESIGN

The final outcome of this font was worse than the first one. I did not like the way this turned out because the font looks like it has been squished in and it does not look good at all. Furthermore, my intention with the background matching and blending with the font did not go well with this I chose this font because of it’s ascending and font. The width was to narrow descending letters which is unique amongst therefore the picture within the font other fonts which were present. Similarly, my could not be seen which made it paintings are chosen from different art seem like the characters in the movements (big and small) which could link to scene were cramped in and made it my exhibition. I think this font would look good look very unprofessional. In addition on my poster and the width is wide for my because I did not separately use clipping mask. I used clipping mask on the fonts when using the clipping mask, whole of this font and I did not like the outcome. this made my intention of blending the picture into the font unsuccessful therefore I have chosen to make my poster using fonts which Photoshop have provided.

I first chose the font Razed to experiment using clipping mask. I created a new layer to add the same picture which the artwork by Delacroix “Liberty Leading the People, in Photoshop file which I will then paste it onto my poster.

I chose to do the clipping mask inside out to see how it would look onto my poster. However, it did not turn out as I thought it would be and I decided to change my mind as the text is not standing from the poster.

I then chose to have the image blended into the liberty leading the people which shows bits of her dress into the writing. However, when I entered this text into my poster it did not stand out as much so I chose to play around using the “blending options” in Photoshop. Similarly, I did the same thing on the other part of my tittle ‘Fatuus’ using the clipping mask. I did two parts of my tittle as it was easier to edit in Photoshop. I quite like how the font ‘razed’ has turned out to be on my poster but to further experiment on my poster I will also try to experiment with the other font that I have selected which will help me decide which one looks better.

Final Poster This is the final outcome of my poster after playing around with different painting and techniques using Photoshop. I used techniques like the double exposure effects to make the background of my poster. I choose the iconic painting “Liberty Leading the People” by Delacroix and blended that in with the painting “Raft of the Medusa” by Gericault because of the similarities. First of all, both painting contain the contexts of a history period, Gericault’s painting depicting a political scandal whereas Delacroix’s is also depicting a French revolution. Both contain gruesome images of what the people at the time went through where images of frightful corpses are drawn which pulls it’s audience into the painting, putting the viewers in the scene and the place of the people who are present in each paintings. Secondly, I added my font which is a tittle for my exhibition which is ‘Ignis Fatuus’. I also, added the meaning as a subheading as the tittle is in Latin and people who are not interested or don’t know much about art could have a look at the poster to without having to know what it meant. I had chosen to do this with a clipping mask however it did not turn out the way I liked it so I chose to put in fonts which were present in Photoshop. I chose the colour blue because it went well with the poster and I wanted to add a bit of colour to the painting so that the poster could catch it’s audiences eye more frequently. Lastly, I added my gallery logo, dates, contact number, website and address which is information I needed for my poster.

Booklet Analysis To further develop and advertise my research for the exhibition I chose to also do a booklet for the exhibition.

To create my guide, I first looked at different existing guides to get some ideas and inspiration from them. The first thing I liked about this guide was the fact they added one of the artists work which will be present in this exhibition. The font of the color and it's boldness makes it stand out to it's viewers and also gives us the information about the museum. Also, it shows where its going to be held at and the logo of its foundation. This makes the readers of the guide aware of what the guide is actually about. overall, I think using an artists work as the front cover of the guide is really effective and very persuasive.

I really liked how once you flip over the guide, the back of the guide contained the events programme which is very informative for it's viewers. Although, I don’t like how both the front and the back cover have the same artist work which viewers could somehow disregard or even think as printing malfunction which will then lead to the viewers not getting the point of the upside down back cover.

In this guide I liked how they added the picture of the museum which the viewers will be visiting. This is very informative as the viewers will get an insight as to what they are signing up for and also maybe what they are paying for. However, I cannot use this as one of the features of my guide because my exhibition is not genuine.

In the 'Events Programme' section, a lot of information is given as to what each programme is about however the font is very dull and boring color and style which could make the viewers not want to visit it's programmes and shows. Therefore, the events programme section could be a lot more colorful to catch the eye of the viewers with images and color.

I really liked the front cover of this leaflet as it looked very professional and stood out more from the other leaflets which were presented for me. The font of the tittle although simple attracts definition without messing the background up. The colour emerges from the background with the subtitle as well which is good best for audiences looking from afar. The striking background catches the eye of it’s audiences immediately and even more for audiences who know the painting.

The inside of this leaflet shows an insight into the exhibition which is similar to what my leaflet is going to be about. Furthermore, I really like the scale of the painting on this leaflet where it shows every detail in them and also tells about other paintings. The use of space is chosen well and I would like to use this technique in my leaflet.

This was a roll gate folded leaflet and I really liked the inside layout of this leaflet. When you open the leaflet one whole side of the page is covered in a photograph. I really liked this technique as this could fill out a page with an inside look of the exhibition and at the same time interest it’s audience with what the exhibition is about.

Furthermore, on the outside of the leaflet, the map is clearly located and seen by it’s audience. I would like to use this in my leaflet where a whole page my leaflet is filled with map so audience can evidently see where they are supposed to go for the exhibition. Moreover, the middle of the leaflet talks more about when the event will be held however I don't like this page as much because there’s not much of an inside look and none of the paintings which are presented into exhibition which doesn't’t show the audiences what's going to happen.

Final Leaflet I chose my final leaflet to be the same as my poster. I did not change any of my poster’s characteristics because my poster looks professional to be on the front page. My leaflet has 14 pages including a map, an index page and pages summarizing some of the paintings which I will included into my exhibition.

When I was researching for my leaflet I saw that some of the leaflets had index. This made leaflets appear more proficient which highlighted the leaflets qualities. This is why I chose to have an index in my leaflet.

I included a map to show where the place for the exhibition is held at perfectly which makes the leaflet look finished and adept. Furthermore, I then went onto adding the meaning of exhibition title with more information of what my exhibition will be about. Also, I added the meaning of what my title meant as it is in a foreign language which made the leaflet look efficient in answering peoples queries.

In addition, some of my pages give information of some paintings which will be present in the exhibition to give a little insight as to what paintings will be there. I made sure to make every page colorful and lifelike as I felt that some of the leaflets which I researched where always focused around one colour which made them boring and not stand out amongst other leaflets. Moreover, some information is given about some of the paintings whereas others do not. I did this because of the reason above which is to not give too much but enough to draw the audience’s attention. Overall, I like the final outcome of my leaflet which is a small booklet giving an insight to my exhibition and what it will contain which will interest readers who know about these paintings. I made sure to add important information like dates and address which will interest my audience and made it look businesslike.

Space Analysis I am now going to analyze The National Gallery, London to research as to how space is used to present the paintings present in the Gallery and I am going to use and develop my ideas with this research.

The use of marble on the frame of the doors which makes the entrance of the room stand out. Also, using marble makes it look grand and pleasing to the eye. This has inspired me to use marble in my exhibition module on the door frame as the use of marble gives a striking appearance.

The octagonal shape of the room in the middle and multiple rooms coming out of the octagon makes it a unique layout of the gallery. I will use this layout into my module for its uniqueness and luxurious faรงade.

The display of the painting is on a red wall and the information of the painting is on the side of the painting. I also like the rope barriers showing the importance of the paintings. I will use this technique in my exhibition module to make my exhibition module look more organised and sophisticated.

The octagonal dome as the ceiling gives big and imposing feel. The detail on the ceilings shows the rooms scale as having a immense scale.

Directions to show where the viewers are going. I could use this in my model to show efficiency and put in more detail into my exhibition model.

Linear, block patterns on the flooring with a octagonal border to emphasize the shape of the room which gives it more detail and I've decided to use this technique into my module so as to show more detail.

After the octagonal shaped room, each has a room on the curve, which holds a entrance. Similar to this, there are 4 rooms the same layout. The rooms are in a rectangle shape, with a linear ceiling, which shows the size of the National Gallery.

The national gallery holds a luxurious central hall which shows its posh and classy interior. The ceiling also holds detailed patterns with a lot more paintings then other rooms which shows what the place is about.

Rounded arched tympanum with detailed structures of people and patterns at the entrance of the door gives a extravagant and lordly exterior which catches the eyes of the viewers of the gallery.

3d Room Designs To create my exhibition I wanted to plan the layout of my room exhibition. I used “3droomstylr.com website to help me achieve this and see where my paintings look best. I will use this as part of my research and see which design is best for my exhibition and then make a real life mini model

Exhibition room, Design 1

MAIN AREA

Main Hall:

MAIN HALL

My first design is similar to the National Gallery in London. The main hall consists of 1 entrance door, 1 door which leads to the main area, two windows for decorations and one arched door for decoration as well. The walls of the main hall are in red and beige, the entrance wall is beige with the skirting of the door as red. Whereas , the entrance to the main area, the wall is red with the skirting of the door as white. I’ve chosen red and beige as my colours for the main entrance as it makes it more grand and sophisticated. This will make it eye catching for the viewers of the exhibition. I left the flooring of the as wood as it makes it refined and elegant which makes the viewers more interested in the exhibition. The wooden floor unifies the whole building.

MAIN AREA: In the main area, I've used the layout of the National Gallery of the octagonal, circular layout as I think this is what makes it stand out the most. The wall of the octagon at the centre is red with green marble for the door. I think this made it look very intricate and delicate at the same time does not take away the attention from my paintings which will be placed in the octagonal circle layout as well. The octagonal room holds four doors which lead to four rooms. The gallery that I researched, the National Gallery London contained marble on the door frame. This made it look more realistic and detailed which helps when it comes to building my exhibition. I added minimal amount of windows so I have more painting to space to display my paintings.

RECEPTION:

MAIN AREA

RECEPTION

My second exhibition room design is widely different to my first design as I wanted to test out each layout of the museums that I explored. This layout has a more square building space which was similar to one of the museums I looked at. Also, I realized that the museum had a reception which influenced me to have a reception in my exhibition design as well. The design of my is purple, although I couldn’t find a lighter color which would make my walls look more sophisticated and grand. The reception contains the entrance door and the entrance to the main area similar to my first design with no windows. Similarly, the flooring of my design 2 exhibition room is wooden as I thought it made it look classy and it went with the colors on my walls which makes it remarkable for when the viewers first come into the exhibition. Having the reception area as flashy makes it emphatic for its viewers.

Exhibition room, Design 2

MAIN AREA

Main Area:

RECEPTION

I decided that my main area should be a brilliant red color unlike my first design as I wanted to play around with my designs and check which works better. Also, in one of the museums which I visited having windows made it more grand luxurious which made it striking for its viewers therefore I added windows to the entrance of my main area with its frame a maroon brown which combined with my red walls Furthermore, I added rounded arches in the main area as it made it more glorious and monumental as they are originated in Rome. The big rounded arches with other arches showing made it look very polished and elegant which is what I wanted my exhibition room to look like. In addition, the wall on the end of the main area is blue. This combined well with my choice of colors and made it look more glorious and eye catchy.

Exhibition Room, Design 3

My third exhibition room design mostly consists of marble. I think marble makes it look more smooth and refined as all my other walls consists of paint whereas this time I decided to add marble to the exhibition design. Although, I don’t like this design as much as the my other two designs, I would like to add some aspects of marble to my other room designs too. I decided adding a reception desk to the reception made the area stand out more and made it look more realistic. I also decided to add turquoise paint with marble as space for the information of the paintings which will be placed on the marbled walls after the reception area. The turquoise paint I think went well with the marbled and made it look more distinguished. However, I think the marble on the walls would draw more attention to it then the paintings which is also one of the reasons why I don’t like this design. Furthermore, I made the flooring of this exhibition marble as well, as it made it look more elaborate sumptuous.

Tickets

This is the final outcome of my ticket design. I added all the needed information which includes, gallery logo, a barcode, ticket number, the title of the exhibition, date and time. I added Liberty drawn by Delacroix from the painting Liberty Leading the People as I used her as a dominating figure in my poster as well as my leaflet. The matching dominating figures in the advertising methods I think is useful which makes it look more polished as well as competent as all the required information is put in. For my title on this ticket, I chose that color because of it’s similarities with my poster and leaflet design. Furthermore, I chose a similar colour scheme with other fonts when writing the date and time because it was similar to my poster.

I added a barcode, which makes it look more realistic and makes my exhibition look genuine. A ticket is also mentioned above the barcode if a client loses their ticket before the event so they can apply for another one. Furthermore, the background of ticket is white with bubbles which is different to all my other backgrounds. I chose this background because of it's simplicity. The background blended well with Liberty in the corner and made it look more professional rather than having just a black or a white background. Overall, I like the look of this ticket design because although the design is simple, it catches the eye of my audience and highlights it’s purpose which is to inform it’s audience about the exhibition.
