Seniors attend “Prom in Paradise”

Senior Issue Note from The Eagle Eye Editorial Board

E

very year, freshmen enter the Marjory Stoneman Douglas campus with great anticipation for the future ahead of them. However, it is not until senior year that this future becomes tangible, for it is the time in which one’s life is set into motion. This senior edition of The Eagle Eye explores change, encompassing everything from the senior prom to college admissions, and the culmination of the opportunities available to the seniors within the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas. We take this time to thank the seniors for the impact they have made on our lives. We wish all seniors good luck in moving forward. May each and every one of you remember the lessons you have learned during your time at MSD, and may you always be “positive, passionate and proud to be an Eagle.”

Corrections: April 2016 Issue: The “Breathing for Ethan” included the incorrect date for Ethan Lalinde’s vigil as Feb. 9. The correct date is Feb. 5.

Congratulations Newspaper Seniors! Thank you for your years of dedication to the newspaper staff. Wishing you the best of luck in your futures. Letters to the Editor “[The April 2016] issue was probably one of the best that our school has seen to date. Upon receiving the piece, the cover art stands out almost instantly. I found it to be a very creative way to depict many of the opinions that people at our school have on pressing political and social opinions. In the beginning of the piece, I actually found some of the demographics of politics at our school pretty surprising. I always have had a feeling that we lived in a very liberal area, but not to the depicted extent. It was pretty disappointing, though that there was almost no mention of sports at our school- we have students getting offers almost every week, and our baseball team is ranked first in the country, but all of that was just left out. Despite all of that, the most moving aspect of the issue was the article honoring Ethan Lalinde. As sad as his passing was, I knew very little about the disease that Ethan had lost his life to, so the included factual information was very helpful to hear.”

“Lately, I think everyone is sick and tired of school. After AP exams, juniors and seniors especially just want to relax and finally have summer arrive. I don’t think anyone has the strength to even sit at a desk and listen to a single academic word out of the teacher’s mouth. Honestly, I think we should have a fun few weeks instead of learning. I guess we’ll all have to wait for summer.”

Melissa Velasco, 11

“Dear Editor, I was so incredibly happy that the Eagle Eye created a page similar to the page @humansofnewyork. I never fully grasped the concept that so many students in our school go through such tough times. I enjoy every single post from the tear-jerkers to the awe-inspiring and cheerful ones. Seeing posts on the @humansofmsd page really changed the way I viewed people at school everyday and it’s taught me to never pass judgment as I, like many other students at the school, have so much going on in their lives. As a senior who is graduating in less than two months, I am so grateful to still be connected to MSD through the posts of the @humansofmsd instagram page. I will be looking out for new posts! “

Once a Prom a Time F

rom decorating senior crowns at the end of junior year, to attaining a parking spot in the long yearned for senior lot, to applying to an extensive amount of colleges, to attending Grad Bash at Universal Studios in Orlando, to receiving senior cords alongside all of your friends, attending one’s senior prom is much more than the culmination of the senior year experience–it’s a rite of passage. Even as early as freshman year, prom is already considered a highlyanticipated event that must be planned for well in advance. Upon being elected in the very first weeks of school, freshman class board members must immediately begin to raise money for the dance, often through “kickbacks” at restaurants, car washes and t-shirt sales. “I was lucky enough to have served as class president for both my freshman and sophomore years,” senior Kelly Pagano said. “We were so far away from prom, but still had fundraisers at Chipotle and shirt sales time and time again throughout the year in order to prepare.”

Over the course of their four years in high school, students devote almost every event’s funds to prom, so that when senior year finally rolls around, the class will be capable of financially supporting the long-awaited dance and its surrounding festivities. While senior prom often occurs in May, as it did this past year on May 7, the incoming senior board begins preparation for the event well in advance. “Once the incoming senior class board was elected, it felt like we immediately had to kick into prom-mode,” senior class President Isaac Hetzroni said. “We were meeting as early as August in order to discuss themes, food choices and decoration ideas. During the school year, we probably met about once a month to plan, but as we got closer we would meet every few days. It got a little hectic, but it was all worth it in the end.” The week before prom, the distribution of tickets

A Close Embrace. Senior Gillian Morrison and her date, Brandon Civetti, share an intimate dance together. Friends with Civetti for three years, Morrison decided to invite him from the University of Florida to attend prom as her date. “Prom was an unforgettable experience,” Morrison said. “Dancing all night with Brandon made me forget about all my stress. It was a chance to have fun and to spend time with a great friend.” Photo by Liam Hutton

their friends. Even the food was catered towards the theme, as the graduating class and their dates were served with a variety of tropical cuisines such as flavorful chicken, Cuban-style rice and dulce de leche. “I’ve been chaperoning Marjory Stoneman Douglas proms for many years,” Coach Chris Hixon said. “Things inevitably change every year, but the food has never been as good as it was this past year.” to branch out of, in order All throughout the to make good decorations, night, seniors danced to senior gifts and food and music choices for the night.” commemorate their past four Upon entrance into the years as high school students, as well as to celebrate their Harbor Beach Marriott in futures after graduating from Fort Lauderdale, students were greeted with palm trees Marjory Stoneman Douglas. When I called my mom and told her [I had won prom queen], she was so happy and couldn’t stop screaming. She was also prom queen when she was a senior, so it was awesome to be able to continue that legacy.

For the Last Time. Senior Louis Deslouches dances energetically with friends as he hears the first notes of “Soulja Boy” blare out of the speakers. “At first I didn’t know what to expect from prom, but I did know that I had to make the most of it,” Deslouches said. “Once {“Soulja Boy”} came on, my friends and I just started to go crazy. Just having the opportunity to hang out with everyone for the last time made prom truly special.” Photo by Liam Hutton

have it go along with the theme of the dance.” At the end of the night, the Senior Court was called to meet in the middle of the dance floor to announce the winners. Couple Megan Leahy and Zachary Knecht were awarded prom queen and king as they danced to the only slow song of the night. Others began to pair up with their dates and dance alongside Leahly and Knecht to conclude the dance. “My friends nominated me to be prom queen,” Leahy said. “I was so nervous that since it was both my boyfriend and I, one of us would win and the other wouldn’t. When I called my mom and told her, she was so happy and couldn’t stop screaming. She was prom queen when she was a senior, so it was awesome to have been able to continue the legacy.” Students celebrated their past and upcoming achievements at their prom in paradise, alongside each other to commemorate their past four years as high school students, as well as to honor their milestones. One More Dance. Dancing with his date, senior John Meguschar holds junior Alyssa Humphreys close. Meguschar spent his last high school event dancing with Humphreys, taking in the music and the lively atmosphere around them and enjoying the intimacy of prom. “I had an absolutely amazing time,” Meguschar said. “It was a night full of wonderful memories, and I will always fondly remember it as one of my absolute favorite moments as a senior.” Photo by Liam Hutton
