Dry Spell to Blooming Vines.
In the 1800s, wineries and vineyards flourished throughout Georgia. In fact, at the turn of the century, Georgia ranked sixth among the wine producing states with almost 3,000 acres of vineyards, which produced more than one million gallons of wine. However, in 1907, 10 years ahead of the rest of the country, Georgia’s glory days of wine-making came to a screeching halt with prohibition. Georgia’s adoption of the Prohibition Act had master vintners turning to peaches and tomatoes for their livelihood, destroying a generation of wine-making traditions. For decades, the state’s once lush and fruitful vineyards lay fallow and barren. Georgia’s wine industry didn’t see a revival until the late 1970’s and early 1980’s when modern day wine makers such as Gay Dillinger of Cartersville planted Split Rail Vineyards, Dr. Maurice S. Rawlings established The Georgia Winery in
Ringgold, Tom Slick created Habersham Vineyards and Winery in Clarksville and the Panoz family established Chateau Élan Winery in Braselton. Today, Georgia’s Wine Country stretches from Savannah to North Georgia, which has been dubbed the Georgia Wine Highway. Since the 1990’s, more than 40 wineries and vineyards have been established, including Tiger Mountain Vineyards, Frogtown Cellars, Cartecay Vineyards and Montaluce Winery. On Tour Georgia’s modern wine industry has been creating buzz among the country’s wine connoisseurs, producing some extremely popular and award-winning Georgia-grown vintages. As a result, Georgia wine tourism has become just as popular as their wine, and thanks in part to the vintner’s hospitality and never-ending enthusiasm in creating events
to entice tourists, young and old. People from all over the country are heading to Georgia to attend wine events like the annual Georgia Wine Country Festival in Dahlonega, Swine Wine Weekends at Three Sisters Vineyards & Winery, Wine Maker Wanna Be weekend at Chateau Élan, and Georgia Winery’s annual Grape Stomp, to name a few. Exploring Georgia's Cultural Gems

Many Georgians are familiar with the shuddersome stretches of roads between common destinations in our home state - the mind-numbingly dull expanse between Atlanta and the pristine beaches of Florida's panhandle; the seemingly endless I-16, a worn-down line of asphalt Atlantans are forced to conquer between Macon and the popular historic city of Savannah; the slate-grey bleakness of I-85 enclosed by a wall of pine trees. These wide stretches of road are what we dread the most about road tripping around the state - it's the part of the trip that we wish we could hit the “Fast Forward” button and skip through. But what if we turned these nowhere towns that dot our major interstates into part of the destination? Unbeknownst to most of us, these tiny towns are rich in history and chock-full of charming jewels that might make the mundane journey down I-16 and the like a bit more bearable. Civil War enthusiasts will become enthralled with the Road To Tara Museum in Jonesboro's 1867 Historic Train Depot. Throughout the halls of the depot, those familiar with the 1939 film based on Margaret Mitchell's famous novel, Gone With The Wind, will recognize the accurate reproductions of the costumes worn by Vivien Leigh, Hattie McDaniel (Mammy), Ona Munson (Belle Watling), Ann Rutherford (Careen O'Hara), and Cammie King Conolon (Bonnie Blue Butler). Many of the treasures from the personal collection of Herb Bridges, the largest private collector of Gone With The Wind memorabilia, is also safeguarded within the museum’s aged walls.

Those who desire to become fully immersed in Scarlett's gentile world may opt to take the Southern Belles & Whistles Tour or Gone With the Wind Tour. Both tours run daily and allow visitors to truly experience the area's ample cultural history. Travelers who opt to make the trek through Atlanta 82 miles north to Dahlenoga, will be rewarded with yet another unique slice of Georgia history at the Dahlenoga Gold Rush Museum, located inside the 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse, the state's oldest courthouse. Nestled in the rolling hillsides of the former Cherokee nation, Dahlenoga was once a gleaming spark of promise in an otherwise unchartered territory. The small town ushered in the country's first gold rush, as thousands of wealth-hungry adventurers made their way to the Appalachian town in hopes of striking it rich. In 1838, a U.S. Branch Mint opened in Dahlenoga, coining more than $6 million in gold before its close in 1861. Now, visitors can view the complete set of these coins, a nugget weighing more than five ounces, and a large hydraulic cannon and nozzle used to blast soil from the mountainsides inside the old courthouse walls. The mountain town of Dahlenoga has much more to offer for those that choose to make a day of perusing the quaint streets. In fact, Southern Living featured Dahlenoga as a “Small-Town Escape,” in the June 2012 issue, and suggested paying a visit to the Crimson Moon Café for live music; The Fudge Factory of
Dahlenoga to satisfy a sweet tooth; Vintage Music; The Holly Theatre; and then The Corkscrew Café for a post-show meal. Day-trippers headed to the Westside of the state may find that the Chieftains Museum / Major Ridge Home in Rome piques their interest. Lodged in the center of the house is a twostory “dogtrot” log cabin that was once home of the striking Cherokee leader Major Ridge and his family in the early 1800’s. Desiring something more sophisticated for his family, Major Ridge employed his son John to oversee a complete overhaul to the home. The once simple log cabin was transformed into the white clapboard plantation home that still stands today. During his time spent on the plantation, Major Ridge worked tirelessly to protect the Cherokee nation. Now, the museum is home to interpretive exhibits, educational programs, and special events involving the Ridge family and Cherokee history and culture. From the tumultuous demise of the Cherokee nation to the wild gold rush in Appalachia, to the gentile air of Scarlet O’Hara’s day, the state of Georgia is marked with a fascinating history that still decorates the state. All that is needed to delve into it is some gas money and a desire to go off the beaten path.
