The Back Story

Young guns dream Big Tough economy proved no match for young agents of change bent on making life wishes come true One morning last July, a young REALTOR® named Lindsey Cheney was driving to meet a client when a report came on the radio that Make-A-wish Georgia had more than 600 critically ill children on the wait list – and that many of the children would die without having their wished-for experience fulfilled.

Riveted, Cheney pulled over to the side of the road, did a quick Google search and made notes. Later that day, she blitzed a message to her colleagues throughout greater Atlanta.

Cheney felt a personal responsibility. This was the year that she was in charge of fundraising for the charity sponsored by young Realtors' Council – and the charity was Make-A-wish Georgia.

Fast forward to mid-November 2012. The yRC, a volunteer organization of Harry Norman, REALTORS® under the age of 40, presented $21,176.28 to the charity, granting the life wishes of three children.

… the tough get going In the seven years that the yRC has been sponsoring Georgia Make-A-wish, it has raised over $100,000 and granted life-dream

wishes to 19 area children. But interestingly, the more the Great Recession seized Atlanta, wreaking havoc on real estate in particular, the more these agents of change fought back for their charity – and won.

In fact, the yRC raised more money for Make-A-wish in 2012 than in any of the six previous years of sponsorship. And their 2011 donation of $19,000 topped all years before that. "when you're going through a hard time personally because business is down, and then you stop to think about a child who has cancer and parents who can't pay medical bills, it puts it in perspective," says Cheney. "we saw that times were tough for charities and we doubled down."

a strategY for success The young Harry Norman REALTORS®, who each year host a giant bowl-a-thon to raise money for their charity, attacked the challenge with even greater ferocity in 2012. They started keeping impeccable records of every transaction and every communication.

They had more structure, more meetings, and more determination than ever to battle their recession-born opponent. They also had a

deep bench; many yRC members had been involved in the council for years. The council had also developed many long-time bowl-athon sponsors, such as Harry Norman's Family of Services partners and a host of local real estate support services: home inspectors, builders, painters, hardware stores and the like.

Moreover, to stir up excitement among agents, the yRC engaged an ambassador in each Harry Norman office throughout greater Atlanta. The ambassadors were also challenged to bring in at least one bowl-a-thon business sponsor a quarter. "we made it easy for everyone to be involved. People who couldn't afford to buy a $250 sponsorship could by $5 in raffle tickets," says Cheney.

Mission accomplished, and much more importantly, wishes granted. On the evening of the November 2012 bowl-a-thon, as giant monitors flashed vendor logos and well-wishes overhead, 55 five-person teams of T-shirt-clad Harry Norman agents, staffers and supporters engaged in a heated, friendly battle of the pins – knowing all along that they were all winners from the onset.

LILA MEETS SLEEPING BEAUTY Lila just cannot get enough of princesses! She knew that she wanted to go to California to meet her favorite princess, Sleeping Beauty! Lila and her family had a wonderful cross country trip and experienced all of the unique opportunities that Disneyland® has to offer!

Lila loved visiting Pixie Hollow where she got to meet Tinker Bell and all of the other fairies. However, Lila’s favorite moment during her wish trip was getting to spend one-on-one time with the Disney princesses.

KENNY TAKES A TRIP TO SEATTLE

KYLE TAKES FLIGHT AND LANDS IN PARADISE

Kenny decided that he wanted to go to Seattle to visit family and see the city. He wanted to go to the Space Needle, take a ferry, visit a National Park, and eat some really good seafood. Another special request was to see his older brother again, before he was deployed overseas. Not only was Kenny able to visit everything he wanted, but Kenny’s older brother was able to join him on his trip so that they could spend time together.

It was easy to see the excitement in Kyle’s eyes when he described his wish to go to Disney World! He and his family flew to Orlando and stayed in one of the lovely villas provided by Give Kids the World. While there, they visited Epcot, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Universal Studios, and Sea World.This wish allowed Kyle and his family to reconnect and relax as a family without the worry of his illness, doctor appointments, or school.

Tyler wished to have a multi-media hot tub where he could relax and nurse his leg. Tyler was granted his wish and received a spa, equipped with all the jets, lights, stereo system, heated towels for the cold weather, and even a disco ball! Tyler no longer has to worry about his pain when he’s in his hot tub, he just needs to relax and enjoy the jets warming his body and soul!

Sophie and her family boarded a plane and made their way to the beautiful state of Hawaii, where they were welcomed by greeters with beautiful leis. During Sophie’s stay, she visited Pearl Harbor, learned about the aquatic life of Hawaii and the tropical Pacific at an aquarium, and splashed around at a water adventure park. Her favorite part, however, was getting to swim with dolphins!

Morgan chose to go on a Disney cruise where she had the time of her life! When she stepped foot on the boat, there was no holding her back. She and her family visited Nassau, the Bahamas, and Castaway Cay, a private island owned by Disney.

Morgan also got to have dinner with and meet the captain of the ship, who even let Morgan pretend like she was steering the boat!
