iving in England, unlike other exotic locations, we spend most of our time being cold, and the winter months offer us the opportunity to bundle up like no other. The wintery season brings us many fashion gifts, such as stylish coats, cascading capes and fuzzy festive jumpers, which offer their own unique statement, in the season to be jolly. And fashion, individuality and joy are so closely intertwined. In our current culture, we revel in our

efore I came to the UK, British style was one of the fashion styles that I wasn’t able to handle. It was all about check shirts and black wool jackets which seemed overly smart to me. However, when I actually fit myself into the culture, it became an everyday look. It is far more than a simple shirt and jacket, checked and black. So what is fashion? You must be familiar with it, although you might

Whether you are a fan of the timeless aesthetic in the form of a flowing black dress (page 10-11), want to make a bold statement in sophisticated white (page 6) or simply want something to keep you warm (page 4), fashion can provide both style and functionality. Like a mathematician obsessed with the infinite digital sequence of pi, I feel addicted to the charms of fashion and the possibility of a combinations of colours. Maybe, it is a colourful dream. VICTORIA’S SECRET fashion show THE COVETED CHARLIE’S ANGELS

I

PLUS NEW-COMERS GIGI HADID AND KENDALL JENNER WALK THEIR FIRST VS RUNWAY. BY MELISSA HAGGAR.

n a world where every model dreams of becoming an Angel, only a few ever get the chance to grace the glittering catwalk in a Victoria’s Secret show.

Seasoned angels Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Behati Prinsloo, Candice Swanepoel, and Lily Aldridge are pros when it comes to looking elegant in some of the finest lingerie, and the latest fashion show was no exception. An array of colours,

extravagant corsets and, of course, expertly designed underwear, lined the stage as notable

12

and new models ascended to the spotlight. Often described as the “superbowl of fashion”, the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has come a long way since its launch in 1995. Since then, many angels have come and gone, and the show has not been short of controversy. In 2012,

Kevin Mazur

the exclusive show came under scrutiny for its appropriation of Native American culture, with model Karlie Kloss sporting a head piece and attire that was highly stereotypical and inappropriate for a lingerie fashion show.

Whilst Victoria’s Secret has adamantly apologised since then, there is still a certain air of trepidation when the season rolls around for the next VS show.

The most recent c o n t r o v e r s i a l announcement? That relatively new models Kendall Jenner, of the Kardashion Klan, and Gigi Hadid (who is a self-confessed VS enthusiast), would be walking the r u n w a y. Naturally, social media set alite, with s o m e concerned that the addition of

these new models would lower the standard for the show.

Determined to prove their critics wrong, Jenner and Hadid set their sights for victory and in numerous posts communicated through social media (particularly Instagram and Twitter), it was clear that they weren’t backing down.

Fortunately, the show seems to have gone off without a hitch, as Hadid nailed her two walks while dressed in a gorgeous teal and black ensemble, showing off her killer physique. Jenner seems to have done equally well, resembling a butterfly mid flight on the sensational stage. Dressed in a pink caged corset and blue flowery bustier, she looked every bit the part. The VS Show is also known for its musical guests, and British singer Ellie Goulding, revival songstress Selena Gomez and The Weeknd took to the stage to sing alongside the models, wowing with their vocals and talent.

BALMAIN x H&M A LOOK AT THE HOT NEW COLLECTION THAT IS TAKING THE WORLD BY STORM. BY MELISSA HAGGAR.

W

hen H&M announced its latest designer collaboration with Parisian powerhouse Balmain, the world rejoiced.

Creative director Olivier Rousteing took to the Billboard Music Awards red carpet to make the announcement, and everyone’s favourite gal pals Kendall Jenner and Jourdan Dunn were on hand to display the latest pieces from the collection.

The new collaboration offers a larger variety of people the opportunity to get their hands on a cheaper slice of haute couture, and it certainly looks like something worth shelling out for. With the recent release of the BALMAIN x H&M line, we take a look at some of the stunning pieces on offer and see whether they measure up to the hype.

When you look through some of the pieces you can tell that the quality is sublime; each sequin is sewn on with the upmost precision and care. The collection oozes high fashion chic, but with an affordable price tag for the budget conscious fashionista. A pink applique dress is bedazzled with jewels and sequins, ready to wear for the Christmas period. You’ll certainly sure to catch a few eyes as you strut down to your office party in this sassy midi dress. Sequins appear to be a regular feature in the collection, with a stunning emerald green mini dress making the cut. Sporting a slashed neckline and suede belt, this is

14

a must-have piece and would look great with gold statement jewellery and some killer heels.

If you adore statement jumpers then BALMAIN x H&M has definitely got a few items for you. The lavish pearlescent black and gold jumper with velvet detailing is expertly designed and would look enchanting with simple black tailored trousers, or if you’re feeling brave, a bold skirt.

The blue knitwear jumper with cut-out design and sheer underlining, adorned with gold detailing is simply breathtaking.

BALMAIN, and Rousteing, it’s that he is not afraid to be bold and go with striking colours and elaborate embellishments. In this instance, it pays off, as the collection relies on its eye-catching aesthetic. The colour palette of the line can be identified as a few key shades: mainly monochrome, with a splash of teal, royal blue, luscious pink, gold, bold red and mustard yellow. Sticking with these colours means that the collection matches well and each piece feels like it has been carefully thought out and paired with items that really make the look work, and for shoppers to find it easy to think up outfit combinations, and ultimately, find something that speaks to them and their style. The use of textured fabrics is a wise move, as it makes the collection more intriguing and aesthetically pleasing.

Ultimately, the collection exudes power and control, with smart suits and striking dresses, whilst adding a touch of femininity to select pieces. This is for the woman who wants it all.

Paired with satin trousers, this look would be regal elegance at its finest. If there’s one thing about

When you’re looking to your wardrobe for potential party pieces to see you through christmas and the new year, you don’t want to overlook BALMAIN x H&M, as the fashion company proves once again that it knows what’s what when it comes to choosing guest designers. Creating a collection that is effortlessly chic and extravagant, H&M are ones to watch for potential future collaborations, and we’re sure you’ll love this latest sublime set.

Style it like SOOKIE WE SAT DOWN WITH VOGUE ONLINE STAFFER SOOKIE LI TO TALK ABOUT HER FAVOURITE STYLE ICONS, HER KEY PIECES AND THE LATEST WINTER TRENDS. BY CHLOE YU. EDITED BY YIFAN CHU AND MELISSA HAGGAR. PHOTOS AND EDITORIAL BY CHLOE YU.

What’s your understanding of fashion? To me, ‘fashion’ is about expressing yourself freely. To wear the stuff you really like. Everything you buy doesn’t have to be all from high-end brands. Mix and match is the most interesting part of fashion. How long have you being interested in fashion?

Since high school, when I paid a lot of attention to the celebrities and what they wore. I love to follow trends. What do you think of designer fashion? Do you wear any? Sometimes. Not every item of clothing I own are designer’s. I pick up items that I like, no matter if it is a designer piece or from the high street. What’s your favorite fashion style? Do you have a ‘style icon’? Mie Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby. I like the 60s vintage look. And Kiko Mizuhara, who’s a model turned actress in Japan. And the girls in Harajuku also gave me a lot of inspiration. So I like 1960s vintage

mixed with a touch of Japanese cuteness. For example, my recent favorite item is the A-line skirt, which really flatters your body shape. To mix and match, I like pearl necklaces. It looks perfectly feminine and also goes well with sweaters. What colours do you like/prefer?

Black, white and grey are the three colours that you might find most in my wardrobe. Because they are so versatile and never out of trend! I also love bright colours though, and use them to embellish the whole outfit. For example, Marsala red, which is this year’s great look. And it also echoes a Christmas vibe that I love! What are the key items in your wardrobe?

The main item I adore is my faux fur coat, which is this winter’s must item. My loafers are comfortable to walk around and can match almost everything. I love to pair these with my beret hat which is red, as it adds a pop of colour to my monochrome outfit. What do you think this winter’s trend is?

For this winter, ‘norm core’ is still the big theme. I would recommend wide-leg trousers, which are worth the money to invest in. It looks great, suits most people and gives you the space to move around.
