The Evening Star Alternative Movie Poster
Research: Research for this brief consisted of watching clips from the film including the key scenes and quotes, as well as reading information about the film and plot. Reading reviews from the film was useful as it allowed an insight in to the overall opinion of the film which seemed to be that it followed on relatively well from ‘Terms of Endearment.’ The two images below were the ones which stood out most when researching and the ones which best communicated the themes in the film.
Concept: The concept for the poster was to represent the key themes within the film, by highlighting the importance of family and the obstacles of life that this family in particular had gone through. The aim was to produce an illustrated imitation of one of the stills from the film and to put together a poster that carried the aesthetic not only of a film poster but also a photo album as two of the main characters in the film are seen to me remembering family life using photo albums early on in the film. Design Decisions: The colours chosen were relatively simple and allowed me to design effectively within the constraints of the brief, which stated that the responses could contain only two colours + stock. The black and white proved to be really beneficial as they allowed the illustration and more importantly, the text, to stand out within the design of the poster. The blue was added to represent how during the film a lot of the characters are left feeling ‘blue’ after the events that have occured. It also introduces a calming element to the colour scheme.

The Evening Star ‘Jenna Sue’ is the font displayed above that features in the final design of the final film poster. This font was appropriate as it reflects a hand rendered quality that could immitate the note/ caption like style of text that features in a photo album.
Jack Nicholson The second font included in the design was ‘Desdemonda’ which was appropriate when it came to introducing the text portion of the design to the poster. It proved to be a suitable choice for the actors names and film studio that produced the film as it takes on the aesthetic featured in other film posters.

Final Poster: The final poster was printed on A3 white stock with a silk finish in an attempt to imitate the production of film posers. This decision was also made as an extension of the concept. For the final design, the illustration was placed in side a double boxed frame to suggest the idea of a polaroid photograph, accompanied by the hand rendered like text at the bottom of the ‘polaroid.’ This acted as a further extension of the concept for the poster carrying the aesthetic of a photo album.
