YOUTH SHELTER SERVICES
CAMPUS MASTER PLANNING & GIRLS SHELTER FACILITY
Project Description: YSS, a non-profit dedicated to helping children and youth through comprehensive prevention, treatment and transition programs, was seeking services for a multi-facility campus in Ames, Iowa. The project consisted of site selection, master planning, and facility design for YSS Girls Shelter, YSS Boys Shelter, YSS Recovery Center, and various jointly used amenities. The campus plan is simple but versatile enough that it can be used on two prospective properties. It places shared facilities at the main entrance and situates residential buildings in array around them on the interior of the properties. The building typologies present are demarcated by their respective roof lines which follow two simplified forms and color schemes. Treatment and shelter buildings employ high pitched, charcoal gable roofs. They are also defined by their tall, narrow punched windows. Amenities such as the Cafeteria and Multi-purpose/ Gym are pre-engineered metal buildings that have red monosloped roof lines that engage a waterfall edge. Both building typologies share the use of vertical metal siding.
Firm: HAILA Architecture | Structure | Planning Project Role: Designer Location: Ames, Iowa Project Area: 3 Acres Construction Budget: $1.6M ; 300K - Site Development Client: Youth Shelter Services of Iowa Project Status: Design of YSS Girls Shelter - On-going Other projects to be phased through 2022

The client strongly requested that all facilities aim to capture a residential and calming atmosphere. Since that means something different for every individual, customization is achieved by utilizing affordable and durable yet versatile materials such as cork-board,chalkboard surfaces (any color), and tap-able abuse resistant drywall as well as smaller movable seating arrangements.

LOONEY-SALOTTI RESIDENCE Firm: HAILA Architecture | Structure | Planning Project Role: Designer Location: Ames, Iowa Construction Cost: $60,000 Project Area: 3,200 sf Client: Mr. and Mrs. Looney Salotti Project Description: The Looney-Salotti’s were a young family that sought to change the appearance of their house’s 1950s exterior to better align with their tastes. The client primarily wanted to address three bothersome features: the dominate red brick cladding, the functionality and style of the balcony, and the enclosed porch addition at the back that predated their purchase of the home. The solution that was arrived at contemporized the exterior by wrapping it in a vertically oriented metal panel and extending the form to incorporate the floating balcony. The contrasting colors of the metal panels (dark bronze and white) emphasize the new roof-line. The wood-lined wing walls and soffit in addition to new lighting and railing warmed the approach. Collectively, these changes created a dramatic transformation that improves the curb appeal.

BALLARD MIDDLE SCHOOL ADDITION AND RENOVATION Firm: HAILA Architecture | Structure | Planning Project Role: Assistant Project Manager, Designer Environmental Graphics Designer Location: Huxely, Iowa Project Area: 98,582 sf Construction Budget: $18 Million Client: Ballard Community School District Project Status: Projected Completion Fall 2020 Currently Under Construction Project Description: Ballard Middle School was in desperate need of age appropriate 21st century learning environments since changing its program from a high school nearly a decade prior. The design team worked closely with the client to arrive at a solution consisting a of a renovation of the existing facility as well as two additions.
98,582 SF BUILDING
BMS was originally built as a combined junior-senior high school in 1961 and has undergone expansions in 1973 and 2005
2 Additions
The renovation which affected nearly 90% of the building included HVAC upgrades, increased accessibility in locker rooms and fine arts spaces, finish upgrades that threaded a cohesive aesthetic amongst the buildings prior additions, and new windows, lighting, and technology. The first addition comprised of re-purposing an underutilized courtyard as additional classroom space. In general, classrooms were resized and reconfigured in a perimeter around an extended classroom/ collaboration space to form grade pods. The second addition, located at the east side of the building, expanded the existing cafeteria and kitchen and created a new secure main entryway as well as an administrative suite.

Project Description: Aiming to address the programmatic needs of the Ivy College of Business, Iowa State University commissioned the design team to develop Design-Build Bridging Documents for a 40,000 GSF expansion to the Gerdin Business Building. To ensure the 4 program requirements were accommodated, the criteria for the new expansion was established by analyzing the floor area ratio, setbacks, and creating various iterations of test-fit plans and diagrams of the existing programmatic and projected spaces. This information was then presented to a wide range of stakeholders through a series of programming and schematic design workshops. The goals of all entities were synthesized, prioritized and balanced with the available budget in order to give design-build teams specific, documented direction.

HOMETOWN HEROES
Firm: HAILA Architecture | Structure | Planning Project Role: Design Team Member, Render Location: Grinnell, Iowa Project Area: 8,580 sf Project Type: Hospitality Client: Mr. and Ms. Jack Sherman Project Description: The Sherman’s were looking to renovate a rundown restaurant space they acquired within the heart of downtown Grinnell, Iowa. The concept was to create a contemporary sports bar where residents and college students could gather, grab a bite or drink, and cheer on local and regional sports. The design team was tasked with providing a builders set to the client including some initial layout and finish ideas. The exterior of the building was remodeled to enhance the restaurant’s curb appeal. Dark wood paneling was added to the first floor that contrasted against the original limestone. This gesture not only created visual interest but defined the entrance. This dark paneling was an element that was carried into the interior and balanced by bright white walls, warm wood flooring and tables, and tricolor fabric scheme. Environmental graphics as well as custom display cases memorialized sporting milestones in the local history.
