The Trojan Horse is a tale from the Trojan War as referred to in Homer's Odyssey. In this tragic story, the truth of its existence – a gift from the Greeks to the Trojans – is masked beneath the surface of its skin. Today, we all use the internet and social networks as if they were a gift of the modern world; but behind such exteriors we feed it private information about ourselves and our lives. Hedonism(y) Trojaner is a sculpture by the German artist Babis Pangiotidis, who created the perfect Trojan horse using thousands of old computer keys (shades ranging from ivory-white to nicotine-yellow), arranged on the surface of the horse so as to build an impeccable exterior that imitates the skin of the animal. Hedonism is what drives our main desire to use the web, and as the essential tool of online communication, computer keys form the interface between us and the hedonistic actions of today’s online society. The sculpture looks like a rocking horse and in appearing so represents the reality that the world wide web is the greatest modern-day Trojan-intruder.

Watch HORSE’S BREATHING from the inside
Technology
Watch your horse’s breathing from the inside, even at a gallop, and at any ring, track, or cross-country course you choose.
In the early days of veterinary medicine, diagnosing disease of the upper airway in a horse was a challenge. Because of the conformation of the head, the length of the nose, and a horse’s inability to “open up and say ahh,” direct visualization of a horse’s throat was impossible. The only way to tell if a horse had an airway issue was by the sounds it made during work–think the colloquial term “roarer.” Over time we progressed to cameras on the end of a rigid pipe, followed, with the advent of fiber optics, by the more comfortable, flexible endoscope. But still these cameras needed to be attached to large towers of light sources, display screens, and recording devices. Horses could only be evaluated while standing at rest.
DR. JOAN NORTON FOUNDED NORTON VETERINARY CONSULTING AND EDUCATION RESOURCES TO PROMOTE EQUINE VETERINARY EDUCATION TO HORSE OWNERS, PROFESSIONALS, AND VETERINARIANS. SHE IS THE AUTHOR OF EQUINE FIRST AID HANDBOOK, WHICH INCLUDES MUSTHAVE INFORMATION ON HOW TO RECOGNIZE AND MANAGE COMMON EQUINE EMERGENCIES. FOR MORE ABOUT THE NORTON VETERINARY AND EDUCATION CONSULTING RESOURCES VISIT NORTONVETERINARYCONSULTING.COM. However, it is the abnormalities that only occur during exercise, at high speed and maximum exertion, that compromise the performance and limits the careers of so many equine athletes. Many of these problems are missed during resting exams. Endoscopy of the airway while a horse is on a high-speed treadmill helps, but this is merely a simulation of the true work environment. This is especially true for sport horses that compete in collected positions, in movements that are more than just a straight line. Now technology has taken a great stride forward. Looking somewhat like a chamfron worn by the steed of King Arthur, the dynamic endoscope is leading the charge into battle against upper airway disorders. Worn over the bridle, this small video endoscope is passed up the horse’s nostril and secured to view the larynx (voicebox). A small transistor attaches to the saddle pad or is worn by the rider; it wirelessly transmits the video to a telemetric control system that can be viewed on a computer or tablet ringside, collecting all the data for review.
HORSE PUT THROUGH HIS PACES Now the horse can be put through his paces as he would during training or competition, and the anatomy and function of the airway can be scrutinized with every stride. Not only does this produce a more accurate diagnosis, it is minimally invasive, lightweight, and much less stressful than training a horse to run on a treadmill. Plus, the test can be performed at any ring, track or cross-country course. Plus, these units can be used in combination with wireless GPsand EKG units to give a complete evaluation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems of performance horses. Now veterinarians have a greater insight into what is happening to horses’ throats, offering not only a more accurate diagnosis, but also a more effective treatment plan and follow-up care.

The estate passed hands several times before King Zog of Albania purchased Knollwood in 1951. When U.S. immigation policies and property tax laws prevented him from setting up a planned feudal kingdom there, he abandoned the idea. Zog never visited the property and ended up selling it in 1955.
For years the estate was left to deteriorate and fall victim to vandals. The final owner was Lansdell Christie, a West Point graduate and founder of the Liberia Mining Company. By then the house was derelict and had to be demolished. Most of the other structures on the estate were also torn down. Christie made vast improvements to the property, planting trees, wheat, corn, and feed grains and clearing bridle paths. Shortly after his death, Christie’s widow, determined not to sell to developers, sold or donated 550 acres to Nassau County. The area is now known as Muttontown Preserve.

I
t would seem quite fitting that Mark Badgley, partner in the fashion-design house of Badgley Mischka, would gradually find his way to the charming village of Locust Valley, N.Y. The north shore of Long Island, also known as the Gold Coast, is steeped in a rich history that embodies the bygone Gatsby era. Locust Valley is a hamlet of gracious mansions, secluded estates, and exclusive country clubs. Horses graze on verdant hillsides, and the thunder of polo can be heard in the distance. Some of the area’s original estates from the early 1920s have been broken up and subdivided, but many still stand, preserving the valley’s heritage of understated grandeur. Badgley Mischka is primarily known for their red carpet and evening wear and it is easily possible to envision one of Badgley Mischka’s timeless gowns sweeping across the ballroom dance floors of yesteryear. Mark Badgley and his partner James Mischka are in the company of prestigious families that once resided here. These families were not necessarily the attraction of Locust Valley, but impressive nonetheless. Familiar tycoons and political families such as Roosevelt, Vanderbilt, Morgan, Phipps, and Post had homes here as did artists and socialites, including C.Z.Guest, John Lennon, and Rudyard Kipling. Mark and James’ decision to move to Locust Valley full time was a gradual process. They owned a farm in Lexington, Ky., for five years, and a home in New York City for 30 years, and rented in the Hamptons. They even chose to rent in Locust Valley before buying to see if full-time country living was right for them. It was a culmination of circumstances that helped tip the scales. The quiet home they purchased was just minutes from Mark’s horses, trainer, favorite training barn (see Hunter’s Moon Farm, page 30), and a short, 30-mile commute to Badgley Mischka’s midtown Manhattan office. Mark grew up in Oregon and started riding horses at a very young age. The demands of college, followed by building a world-class fashion business, left him little time for horses. He eventually found his way back to
FEATURE | 29 his beloved passion 15 years ago and has been riding and training in the hunter ring ever since. Mark was a little apprehensive about riding again after such a long hiatus. “I missed it and I was stressed at the studio,” reflected Badgley. “It took one lesson and I was immediately hooked.” He currently has two hunters: Quantos, whom he rides and shows now, and Riviera whom he leases out. He also has a couple of retired horses that live in Lexington. He finds solace at the barn. For him, it is therapeutic, calming, and a total escape. “I love the people and riding with close friends, but of course it’s always about the animal,” explained Mark. During the winter months Mark and James travel to Wellington, Fla., most weekends to participate in the plethora of winter equestrian events that take place there throughout the season.
LIFE IN THE COUNTRY
A
t the end of a winding, narrow, tree-lined lane edged by homes discreetly tucked into the landscape sits the carriage house of Mark and James. If one could sketch the perfect country residence for this remarkably talented design team, it might look something like this. Originally a working carriage house built in 1910, it now feels fashionably chic without forfeiting its ties to the past. The house had been vacant for years and in need of a complete overhaul. Pairing their talents, Mark and James were able to conceptualize and execute the remodeling—doing most of the work themselves. The house sits on six acres and is positioned against the backdrop of a thicket of trees. The pool, built in the 1940s and neglected for 40 years, was also part of the restoration. The home’s interior is bright and airy, with charming architectural details. The master bedroom was once part of the hay-receiving area. The spacious room now features a cozy fireplace, a generous sitting area lined with bookshelves, and a sizeable loft office. Contemporary and traditional furnishings mix harmoniously throughout—much like the rich blend of art and black-and-white photographs displayed on the walls. Tables are

ornamented with an eclectic mix of books, candles, and intriguing objets d’art. Also fitting are the visual tributes to their horses and dachshunds, who are so much a part of their lives.
AN UNWELCOME GUEST
S
hortly after completing the renovation, Hurricane Sandy vented its wrath on the East Coast and caused major damage to the carriage house. Mark and James basically had to start over. They rode out the storm, realizing too late that the country lane leading to the access road was blocked by more than 50 trees. Trees, ceilings, and walls crashed in on them. They had to literally climb over 3-foot-thick tree trunks to get to the living room, and two massive fir trees caused the bedroom walls to cave in. But from the destruction came more enhancements, including replacing a long, low-ceilinged hallway with a bright, atrium-lit walkway.
EQUESTRIAN FASHION It seemed appropriate to solicit Mark’s input on the topic of equestrian fashion—both in the ring and as everyday wear. “Equestrian apparel snakes its way into fashion and it’s coming again now,” explained Badgley. “Calvin Klein and Michael Kors practically showed authentic equestrian wear down the runway, and I understand it. It’s incredibly flattering. Most women who like a classic style can relate to it.” When it comes to the hunter competition ring, “I’m a traditionalist. I don’t like too much experimentation and I prefer to be respectful to the sport,” Mark commented. “Everything else is so industrial and moves so fast. I think it’s charming that the horse world has this kind of heritage and is steeped in tradition.” Mark has no desire to design an equestrian clothing line. On occasion he has designed his own competition jackets, but keeping up with the 20-plus product categories at Badgley Mischka keeps his focus elsewhere. Instead, he seems loyal to wearing custom-made Hadfield jackets and Vogel and Der Dau boots.

ark’s training barn is just minutes from his house. It affords him the opportunity to spend a comfortable amount of time with his horses while managing a flourishing business in Manhattan.
THE FARM. 3. A SPACIOUS,
Much like other properties in Locust Valley, Hunter’s Moon Farm has a colorful past and a promising future. The farm dates back to the 1920s and has passed ownership several times. The current owners have held the property since 1952, but it had fallen into a state of disrepair.
LIT STALLS. 7. MARK BADGLEY
Six years ago the owners hired Jennifer Griffin as Hunter’s Moon business manager. Her job was to transform the run-down farm into a successful training barn. From all accounts it appears that she has met with remarkable success in a short span of time. Jennifer grew up riding and loved spending time with the horses, never outgrowing them. She spent years traveling to the big horse shows, working for such equestrian champions as Ian Millar, Eric Lamaze, and Tim Grubb. Her travels took her throughout the U.S., Europe as well as to the Sydney Olympics in Australia, but after living out of a suitcase for 300 days a year, she took the plunge and accepted the business-manager offer.

The facilities, which now include 80 stalls, are new and impeccable. The barn’s layout mimics the original footprint of a horse-racing barn, with stalls back-to-back and a landscaped center courtyard. Unique to this barn is its setting. It is an amazingly short distance to Manhattan or the Hamptons, allowing busy commuters to fit in a ride before work or on their way to a weekend at the beach. There is a serenity at the barn that doesn’t seem possible given its proximity to the nearby hustle and bustle. The ultimate feature of this barn is its access to the adjoining Muttontown Preserve (see opposite page.) Miles of horse trails meander through 600 acres of land rich with intriguing history and romantic estate ruins—all nostalgic evidence of a bygone era.
9
It seems country life agrees with Mark. He has an idyllic balance in his life—spending time with his horses, training and riding with friends at the barn, enjoying the social scenes of New York City and Locust Valley, and keeping up with the growing demand for the beautiful clothing and accessories of Badgley Mischka.

C
hina’s traditional ethnic minority culture is no short of tribes whose lives are intimately associated with horses. But hunting on horseback using eagles as hunters is a tradition unique to the free-ranging Kazakh people, whom are scattered throughout the northernmost district of Xinjiang autonomous region in areas such as Yili, Dacheng, Altai and Gansu province. People often call Mongolians “the horseback nation”, in essence because they rely on horses as a tool for transport and to ride while herding flocks; but for the Kazakh people, in addition to these functions, their way of hunting with eagles brings a whole new meaning to “life on horseback”.
of the family, usually the grandfather. The ceremony commemorates the first time a Kazakh boy rides a horse, and is one of the most significant events for the nomadic tribe. During such an occasion, the child is dressed in traditional Kazakh clothes formally attired and sits in a circle with family members and neighbors. A whole lamb is roasted, as well as horse milk wine is prepared and offered to relatives, friends and guests in attendance. After feasting on lamb the most auspicious stage of the ceremony takes place, which involves hoisting the child onto his new pony. Led among by relatives the boy is taken for a ride around the grasslands. Henceforth, the boy has a new life companion.
The tradition of Kazakh shepherds using eagles to hunt prey has been passed down through generations from ancient times. According to historical records, the tradition has endured for 4000 years. In remote grasslands during the winter season, horseback hunters use eagles to catch wild hares and pheasants amongst other game, and from time to time, large prey such as foxes, leopards and Mongolian gazelle. While their meat provides food, their fur or feathers are used to make clothes for combating the harsh winters. It takes meticulous training to develop experienced eagle hunters, so that when they attack there is minimal damage to the skin which ensures the surface stays intact for use. In each winter hunting season, valiant Kazakh hunters ride out on their best horses. As they begin their trek through the wild mountain range and grasslands, carrying their fierce hunting eagles is a spectacular sight of formidable valor.
Another key part of the Kazakh’s tradition of horseback hunting is in selecting the hunter eagle. To the Kazakh people, male eagles are the most vigilant, fierce and intelligent members of the bird family. Experienced hunters can judge from its form, its wings and feathers as well as other exterior features as to the quality of the breed. On further inspection, he can even tell from the strength of the bird whether it is suited to hunting, its age and other characteristics.
For the Kazakh people living deep within the Tianshan Mountains means that horses have become an indispensable companion of their lives. Just like the Mongolians and other ethnic tribes that live on the grassland, the Kazakhs roam in search of water and grass to inhabit. During the winter season snow seals off the mountain pass until flowers bloom again the following spring, the Kazakhs migrate to seek out new pastures. Its people learn to befriend horses from a young age and begin ride from childhood; according to custom Kazakh boys are initiated into the life of a young horsemen in a “horse riding ceremony” at the age of five, accompanied by the eldest male
There are usually two ways to acquire a hunter eagle. The first is to take a newborn bird straight from the eagle’s nest and train it to become a hunter bird; the second is to catch an eagle in the wild and train it. When a Kazahk hunter has successfully schooled a hunter eagle in vigor and fighting capability, his command sends the eagle off on flight high into the sky after which it darts towards its prey at speeds reaching 300 km/hr. With its wing open in full span, a larger-sized bird measures a height of around two meters, its body forming a giant mass. Once the eagle has caught its prey, its handler rewards it by slicing off a chunk of the catch’s meat foi his companion to devour. For a well-trained hunter eagle, the quarry yields to at least a few hundred annually. Winter in Xinjiang’s mountainous regions are dotted with the Kazakh people astride their hardy horses, with their hunter eagles perched on their fists, they gallop on the vast and wild mountain ranges painting an unforgettable scenery of winter in the northern regions.

n central Asia’s vast terrain lives an ancient tribe – the Kazakhs. They live a free-ranging lifestyle, and are open, enthusiastic and hospitable people in character. Every member of the Kazakh tribe is an accomplished hunter, but they do not use the same weapon as other modern hunters; rather they use a traditional tool – the Golden Eagle. The Golden Eage is the world’s biggest, most ferocious type of eagle. Every Kazakh boy, when he reaches the age of 13 and is sufficiently strong and healthy, learns to command an eagle. But Ashol is different, as she is the only remaining girl who is able to tame eagles. Although she is still young, but her mastery of the skill cannot be underestimated.

In the Middle Kingdom, the round and pearlescent beauty of the moon was associated with feminine virtues.
I
n our modern and busy lives of today holidays have become more and more of a commercial “experience”. There’s the shopping, gifting and the endless to do’s that we try to check off our list. However, I like to think that among all the expectations of todays’ holiday gambit, it’s still important to remember what they are all about. Even as adults to re-invigorate that spark of excitement of looking forward to happy times to gather, those nostalgic feelings that help to ground ourselves and reflect, and above all the importance of tradition. As the days get cooler, autumn is one of my favorite seasons because it heralds the holiday months ahead. The mid-Autumn Festival is the first to kick off the holiday merriment that many of us look forward to. The feasting and gathering I like to coin as my mother says, “the Chinese version of Thanksgiving”. As many recall the romance of this holiday has grown throughout the ages spurred from the love of the moon and the mystery it brought since olden times. So as tradition goes here we re-tell the fabled lore from generations past that we broach during our feasting and share the history of this holiday with our younger members. Long ago before our fathers and forefathers, before science and discovery put a man on the moon, it was incomprehensible to ever think that the moon was just a rock in space. For all its mystery it was the domain of the goddess an embodiment of all that was feminine and a playground for fairies. This love affair with the moon goes as far back as the Han Dynasty. The allure of the moon not only captivated astronomers and astrologists, but all that were blanketed under the night’s sky. As fascination also brought observation, the cycles of the moon’s phases became useful in the development of what we call the lunar calendar and very reliable and precise when it comes to agriculture and farming even today. In the Middle Kingdom, the round and pearlescent beauty of the moon was associated with feminine virtues. Considerable observation laid way to the discovery that the moon is at its perfection during the eighth lunar month (mid-autumn). To pay tribute the Han Emperor, Wudi proclaimed a celebration on the eighth month holding a banquet that was followed with “lunar contemplation”. After the banquet the emperor and his retinue would adjourn to terraces and contemplate the mysteries of the moon and tell fables. During the Song Dynasty “lunar contemplation” on the fifteenth day of the eighth month became fashionable to the ruling classes and began to observe the ritual. To celebrate the occasion, round cakes shaped like the moon were prepared. The culture of exchanging gifts has never gone out of style and the tradition of giving before the lunar parties was no exception. In
the early times, the occasion for “lunar contemplation” was still reserved only for men. It was a monopoly for men of rank and nobility to gather at great houses to marvel at the splendor of the moons luminous tranquility, among the backdrop of gilded terraces, silken finery, fragrant gardens, composing poems and conversation. Wars have been lost and won but the true story of these unassuming mooncakes has also had their turn in history. During the time when the Mongols had ruled, the Han Chinese majority was oppressed under a reign of terror. On one key battle General Zhu Yuanzhang leader of the Han rebel army marked to take the Capital city of Suzhou. Since the Mid-Autumn Festival was approaching the idea came about to send messages to overtake the city by delivering secret messages written in wax paper hidden inside the mooncakes. Giving gifts were a custom and the unsuspecting Mongols didn’t think anything of it. At the planned time an attack was made on the surprised Mongols and the city was taken. This befell the Yuan Dynasty, starting the Ming and the lore of how moon cakes had won the war went down in history as stuff of legends. With much history and tradition, the mid-autumn festival today has evolved to bring families together to feast in each other’s company and revel in the beauty and romance of the moon. Families of different generations gather together and gifts of Moon Cakes are presented to both friends and family. Three generations of family gather together would be considered auspicious, four generation households would be deemed especially fortunate and even today it is considered when families get together the more the merrier. Children look forward to the evening’s festivities with anticipation of the treats in store and the dreams of play. For amusement all children are given a paper lantern to play with – typically composed of paper and wire contraptions suspended from bamboo rods. Lanterns would take the shape of animals such as fish, birds, horses, butterflies, roosters, dragons and phoenixes, and virtually every child would have a lantern on the night. The children would parade around in groups, singing songs, and chanting rhymes all proudly bearing his or her treasured possession, illuminated by a candle setting it aglow in the moonlight. As we begin a time to share in the bounty of the season may we wish a very Happy Mid-Autumn Festival to you and your families. The robust offerings that spread and fill your table, we at Horsemanship Style have some great entertaining tips to share on decorating with of course equestrian touches as it is the Year of the Horse to make it a memorable and even more festive occasion.

This year of the Horse 2014 has herald the most modern day equestrian sport competitions and events related to horses ever in China. From the Longines Hong Kong Masters and Longines Beijing Masters kicking off high profile competitions in China early in the year, the momentum has only continued as a burst of other new and local competitions, events and performances has flood the scene. During the Beijing Longines FEI World Cup Jumping China League, many emerging provincial teams did very well. Astoundingly a majority of these teams have only been established in less than 2 years, even so many teams have achieved impressive results in competition. With a growing interest in the sport taking off not only for participants and spectators, an industry is building with jobs being created and opportunities available across many fields. With more and more organizations entering the ring, the ability to participate in all kinds of equestrian sports in China is providing the foundations for more and more people to access the sport. The Chinese equestrian sports have increased dramatically and this is a reflection of the rapid development in the recent years and also support from the government promoting healthy living. Though the spectrum of equestrian sport is wide and varied, from Western barrel racing, eventing, polo to Classical dressage performance, all segments are gaining attention, but most widespread in popularity is Show Jumping. Below, we at Horsemanship Style will give a sampling of some of the key events happening this fall.

GIGJA EINARSDOTTIR’ S LIFE IS INTIMATELY ASSOCIATED WITH HORSES, AND PHOTOGRAPHING THEM IS HER PASSION.

igja Einarsdottir is not just an equine photographer by profession. Her life is intimately associated with horses, and photographing them is her passion. “It’s hard for me to imagine my life without horses!”, Gigja exclaims.
Growing up on a farm in Iceland, Gigja learnt to ride from a young age, and found herself captivated by the mystique and beauty of these animals, so much so she would secretly take her father’s camera to photograph them along the beach. “I would finish the entire camera roll, and when he developed the pictures, he gave me this curious look”.
Horsemanship Life
From then on, Gigja sought to capture horses with her camera whenever she could, on long walks or in nearby pastures where she began experimenting with the artistic side of photography. She became increasingly aware of their behaviour as individuals and their interaction in herds. As a photographer, Gigja says it’s extremely important to be sensitive to their personalities, “Horses are very instinctive”, she says, “but also curious”. Understanding their temperament as well as idiosyncrasies allows Gigja to bring them out at their most expressive during a photo shoot.
Gigja says that not every shoot is perfect, and sometimes she is lucky, and sometimes not. “But great light, good eye and a creative mind work well together”, she says. For Gigja, artistic inspiration for her photography comes from anything and everything around her: shapes and lines, fairytales, music, but above all, her own camera lens. “For me, going into nature and just laying on the grass, alone with horses and the camera puts me in the right state of mind”.

uring the reign of the second emperor of the Qin Dynasty (221-207 B.C.), the Prime Minister Zhao Gao, full of wild ambition, was obsessed with calculating ways to usurp the throne. But he was unsure how many ministers in court could be manipulated by him and how many would oppose him. So he thought of a means to test his authority among them and at the same time find out who would dare to act against him.

One day when court was being held, Zhao Gao asked for a deer to be brought there. With a broad smile on his face, said to the second emperor of the Qin Dynasty: “Your Majesty, here is a fine horse which I present to you.” Taking a look at the animal, the emperor thought to himself: It’s clearly a deer, not a horse. So the emperor replied smilingly to Zhao Gao: “Prime Minister, you are mistaken. This is a deer. Why do you say it is a horse?” Keeping calm, Zhao Gao responded: “Will your Majesty please take a closer look? This really is a thousand-mile-worthy horse.” Filled with suspicion, the second Emperor took another look at the deer and said: “But how can antlers be growing on the head of a horse?”
Turning around and pointing his finger to the ministers, Zhao Gao exclaimed: “if our Majesty won’t believe me, you can ask your ministers.” Confused by the nonsense that Zhao Gao was spewing, the ministers were at a total loss, whispering among themselves: “What is Zhao Gao playing at? That is obviously a deer!” But when they saw the sinister smile on Zhao Gao’s face and his two rolling eyes glaring at each of them, they suddenly understood his evil intentions. Some of the ministers who were timid, but had a sense of righteousness did not dare to say anything, since telling lies made their conscience uneasy; to tell the truth would mean that they faced retaliation from Zhao Gao. Some ministers with a strong sense of justice insisted that it was a deer and not a horse. There were also some crafty and sycophantic ministers who usually stuck close to Zhao Gao’s – they immediately voiced their support for the prime minister, telling the emperor: “This really is a thousand-mile horse.” After this event, Zhao Gao punished those ministers who had a sense of moral justice and did not bend to him, using various means. He went so far as to obliterate entire families of some of those ministers.
This story appears in “The Life of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty” in The Historical Records written by Sima Qian. From this story, the phrase “calling a deer a horse” was derived to mean deliberately misrepresenting the truth and calling black white.

ot everyone knows what they are destined to do. For Suzanne Allen-Guerra, finding her calling was as easy as helping her father during summers as a teenager.
She grew up on her family’s 5,000-acre horse and cattle ranch in northern California, where her father, a builder, always had a couple dozen horses. “He started raising Appaloosa horses when an Appaloosa stud accidentally got in with his Thoroughbred mares,” Suzanne recalls. She began helping her father with his construction business. As he worked on small commercial projects from tire stores and post offices, to churches and residential homes, she would spend her summers out on the construction sites, shoveling, soldering, and whatever else needed to be done. “Working for my father in the construction industry, as a child and young adult, informed my sense of architecture and practicality,” she explains. “Architecture must be practical and should perform its job. Yet, at the same time, it should be aesthetically pleasing. Architecture should be about the person or people for whom you are designing, rather than being about the architect or the architect’s ego.” After her education took her from Oregon to Egypt, she earned her master’s degree at the University of Colorado. Her business then began in Breckenridge, Colo., where she met her partner, Courtney Saldivar, who remains an integral part of the business today. “Courtney also comes from a construction background, which was our original common ground. Her grandfather built many of the iconic buildings in the Houston area, including many catholic churches and public art buildings,” says Suzanne. Saldivar elaborates, “My grandfather always said architects had the easy job—they just had to dream up a design—he had to build it. I have always been interested in design and the more I learned about architecture, the more I enjoyed it.”

“SMALL-SC ALE THINGS LIKE DOORKNOBS—THOSE ARE THE THINGS PEOPLE TOUCH AND EXPERIENCE. THE AVERAGE PERSON APPRECIATES DETAILS MUCH MORE THAN THE OVERALL COMPOSITION.”
Since then, Saldivar has moved back to her hometown of Houston, opening the company’s second office. “Many of our clients come from Texas and having an office here helps our clients stay in touch face to face. Texas and Ranches go hand in hand,” she explains. In addition to homes in Colorado and Texas, Allen-Guerra Architecture has worked on projects in Hawaii, New England, and the West, as well as internationally in Canada, New Zealand and Egypt. Suzanne considers themselves to be a “concierge architectural firm” with about 50 percent of their work on ranches and farms.
ACCORDING TO SUZANNE, “‘NATURAL’ IN A RUSTIC ZEN DESIGN NOT ONLY MEANS THAT WOOD AND STONE ARE GENEROUSLY USED, BUT ALSO THAT THEY ARE OFTEN EXPOSED. THEIR FUNCTION IS NOT CONCEALED; NEITHER ARE THEY USED SIMPLY FOR DECORATION. “IN ZEN BUDDHISM, YOU LET THOUGHTS COME INTO YOUR MIND, AND YOU LET THEM FLOW THROUGH,” SHE SAYS. “TRANSLATING THAT INTO ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN, YOU DON’T LET THE EYE GET STUCK ON ANY ONE THING. EVERYTHING IS SIMPLE AND NATURAL, AND EVERYTHING FLOWS.”

When the partners began, they were immediately drawn to a rustic ranch aesthetic, “I have always loved studying architecture that has been designed and crafted by the people occupying the structure, what is called vernacular architecture.” In the case of the American West, ranches and mountain homes have particular functions and needs that can be particular to each homeowner. “It’s sort of an à la carte menu when it comes to ranches,” she says. “People will say, ‘We want a greenhouse,’ or ‘Can you add a road up there and put a gazebo up?’ So we’re constantly making modifications to the ranches that
we’re working on.” Allen-Guerra is known for a “Rustic Zen” design, which combines the best elements of grandiose national park lodges with the warmth, functionality, and livability of postmodernist architecture. Natural materials are not only used but are often exposed, revealing their function with raw edges. Granite countertops, though polished on top, are left with natural edges. Similarly, logs used as beams often retain some of their bark. “In Zen Buddhism, you let thoughts come into your mind, and you let them flow through,” she says. “Translating that into architecture and de-

sign, you don’t let the eye get stuck on any one thing. Everything is simple and natural, and everything flows.” “In the mid-1990s, the American Institute of Architects gave me a grant to research American architect Mary Coulter,” remembers Suzanne. “During my research I came across a photo of her – this tiny 80-year-old woman standing next to a rock wall of her design – making the masons rip the stone off because it wasn’t quite right. For me, it was an inspiration. Architecture is in the details. Without attention to detail, architecture is without depth.”

INSIDE THE HERMÈS ATELIER By Stephanie Peters Photos George Kamper
Access to the Hermès saddlery in Paris is a rare opportunity. When EQ photography director George Kamper and I were invited to visit, we immediately accepted—knowing we would witness the skillful artisans at work, demonstrating the superior craftsmanship synonymous with the Hermès brand.
What are the most important criteria when designing a saddle? LG: The balance of the rider. The comfort of the rider and horse, the contact between the rider and the horse, and the distribution of weight to avoid injury are all critical necessities. The saddle is an essential tool allowing contact between rider and horse.
Designing a Saddle is an Evolution - Laurent Goblet
T
EQ was invited to speak with Hermès artisan, Laurent Goblet (page 103, top right) and Director of Hermès Equestrian Department, Marion Bardet (page 103, middle), who were happy to answer a few of our questions and describe the extensive collaborative process that goes into the design and launch of a new Hermès saddle.
he saddle-making workshops are perched on the upper floors o f H e r m è s ’ s 24 r u e du Faubourg Saint-Honore store in Paris. One workshop is dedicated to the selection and precision cutting of leather, and the other to saddle making. Once the pieces for the saddle are cut to size and carefully examined for any imperfections, they are delivered to the skilled saddle makers on the floor above. The quiet entrance to the saddle-making workshop, bearing a door with an etched glass Hermès logo and leather plaque, conveys the company’s heritage of quality and style that was first established in 1880. Inside, worn-handled and patinaed tools that have been used for decades sit prominently on the saddlers’ worktables along with needles and thread, the cornerstones of the classic and durable saddle stitch. Bookcases are lined with leather-bound registers dating back to 1909. Every Hermès saddle made since then has been recorded and includes a comprehensive list of the saddle specifications, the saddle-maker’s name, and the year the saddle was made.
Within the airy studio are rows of saddles and small prototypes that serve as models for the saddle makers. It is abuzz with light hammering, plinking, and the sound of the saddlers gently massaging supple leather into full-sized versions of their smaller counterparts. There are currently 13 people in the saddle-making department, and each saddle is made by a single craftsman. The saddles are all assembled and stitched by hand, with the exception of the tree–the internal structure that provides the shape of the saddle. Saddler Vincent Leopold (previous page, bottom left) provided a visual demonstration of how a saddle is constructed, assembling the various components of a saddle in proper sequence. Custom designs are nothing new for Hermès saddle makers and Vincent proudly displayed a binder filled with exquisite creations running the gamut from intricate brocade to exotic skins. Hermès’s newest saddle, Cavale, designed for high-level show jumping, was debuted in conjunction with Le Saut Hermès, 2013, an international jumping event featuring 35 of the world’s best jumpers under the glass dome of the Grand Palais.
Horsemanship Life
Do you approach the design of new products collaboratively? MB: The new saddle, Cavale (at left), is an example of collaboration. The initial collaborators were Laurent (Goblet) and Simon Delestre, a top international rider and partner of Hermès. Simon, who rides seven hours a day, helped to establish what is ideal for the rider and best for the horse. Based on Simon’s initial input, Laurent will design a full-size prototype for testing, using the exact materials to be used in the final version. Additional feedback from the rider, veterinarians, and saddlery craftsmen and keen observation of the horse’s responses and movement determine the cycles of revisions. Just recently, Laurent finished a Cavale saddle for a Spanish rider, Pilar Cordon. Laurent said, “It is quite different from Simon’s, but it is still a Cavale. We will always need
to make some revisions. Each horse and rider rides differently.” When designing a saddle, is the ultimate goal a perfect balance of form and function? MB: Laurent will never do something unat- tractive! When he designs German reins he reinvents them, and they will be the most beautiful German reins you’ve ever seen! LG: I have done this for 35 years, and it is practice, practice. I put the rider in the saddle and position the legs and back. This is the first part of a design. After the prototype, I follow the form and movement of the rider and integrate the technical functions a saddle needs to have. I have to listen to the rider, and the vets, and then incorporate the necessary qualities into something aesthetic. Designing a saddle is an evolution.
Horsemanship Life
What impact has technology had on the design and construction of an Hermès saddle? MB: Laurent is always looking for new, innovative materials that enable Hermès to produce the exact same saddles with little variation for individual riders. Advances in memory foam are making inroads in that pursuit. What makes Hermès products timeless? LG: The quality of the materials. The quality of our leathers. There is one tannery in the world that is still producing our leather. You just have to touch it to recognize the superior quality. It is also the quality of the craftsmanship. In the case of our saddles, each saddle is made by one person, every aspect from A to Z. What are Laurent’s sources of inspiration? MB: He was born with it! He loves it when he is asked to create something. He typically starts with existing functional qualities of a product and adds something new with enhanced functionality. He is always using qualities of the past and merging them with techniques of the future.

o one really knows how zebras came to gain their stripes. Their unique and standout appearance that can make zebras seem almost cartoon-like in appearance, is hard to miss on the vast plains of the Africa savanna. And while it’s not immediately obvious what nature’s purpose for their distinct skin pattern is, theories for its evolution range from being effective at repelling bloodsuckers to putting off large predators with confusion. Either way, zebras have developed their black and white lines for a reason, most likely to fend off potential attackers – seeing a herd of large stripy bodies galloping at fast speeds is potentially able to make anyone’s head spin, including a starving lion in a delirious state of mind. It is thought that the stripes break up the shape and form of the zebra’s body, and thus creating a camouflage effect that is particularly useful at dawn when their predators are most active. Under this darkened surrounding, zebras can mesh into the fading backdrop as lights dim and shapes lose their outline and colour. Furthermore, scientists believe that the overall impact of a group of zebras in motion is particularly effective at distorting a predator’s judgement of time, space and distance. And have you noticed the flawless smoothness and sheen of a zebra’s skin? Yes it’s natural, and no they do not have a special formula that can been adopted for anti-ageing skin creams. We also know that the shiny sheen is there for a reason (alas, everything has a functional in the survival of the fittest): it dissipates over 70 percent of the heat that hits the it’s surface, allowing zebras to stay cool under hot solar environments, such as the savannas of Africa
in which they are often found.
PEDIGREE | 93
In fact, three types of zebras are found in Africa: plain, mountain and Grevy zebras. And how do you tell the difference between them? Back to their stripes, which subtly differ in thickness depending on which species you’re looking at. The further south in Africa you go, the wider the stripes become. Apart from that however, they also have quirky features – the mountain zebra has a blob of loose skin on its neck like an Adam’s apple, which is called a dewlap, if we’re getting technical. While the habitats of the mountain and plain zebras may be obvious (they live there), the Grevy zebras inhabit the dry grasslands of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia, and are know for their mass migration ritual each year. Moving in herds that together make up numbers as large as 10,000 during the rainy season in the Serengeti, such team spirit also creates a spectacular sight: a stripe bonanza. It’s a wonder that such a hypnotic affect doesn’t cause half the Serengeti to collapse with nausea. But Zebras are harmless, amiable creatures. They make great companions for one – to each other. They are a lot that’s dedicated to family, and families, as per the ancient Confucius thinking, make up the basic units of their social groups. They’ve even developed highly sophisticated facial expressions as well as less appealing barking noises, to communicate what they’re feeling to each. And zebras always have each other’s backs, both physically and metaphorically – you’ll see zebras grooming each other by biting, all in the name of helping each other out, and getting that all important good scratch!
They’ve even developed highly sophisticated facial expressions ...

LEXINGTON

T
he city of Lexington, population roughly 300,000, sits just askew of dead center in the state of Kentucky. It’s like a heart. As a town, Lexington certainly beats with loads of history and southern gentility. At the same time, it thumps with a surprisingly contemporary flair. There’s a lot to like here.
If you’re visiting, any guide or iPhone app will reel off the basic stats: the second largest city in Kentucky (Louisville being the first), the 62nd largest city in America. It’s most famous for running the Kentucky Derby and brewing bourbon. (Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam, and Woodford Reserve are just three of the 19 major distilleries dotted around the region that produce as much as 95 percent of the world’s bourbon supply.) Once a part of Fincastle County, Va., the area was settled in 1775 by William McConnell and his pioneer party, who, upon hearing of the Colonists’ victory in the first battle of the Revolutionary War at Lexington, Mass., dubbed their encampment along the Elkhorn Creek “Lexington” to venerate the event. (That campsite is now a 26-acre nature preserve known as McConnell Springs, a popular place to go and be outdoorsy.) Lexington soon became one of the first permanent settlements on the frontier. In 1780 Transylvania University, the first college West of the Allegheny Mountains, was founded here, and it was instrumental in turning Lexington’s roughhewn heart into an economic and intellectual hub by the early 1800s. “If you were to bet on a city to become one of the great cities in the United States in the 1700s, you’d bet on Lexington,”
says University of Kentucky history professor Tracy Campbell. “Lexington seemed like one of the leading lights of the west.”
ENDLESS PASTURES Rich history aside, most visitors to Lexington eventually find themselves cruising along through farm country, their auto barely skimming the dry-stacked walls that separate the road from the blue pastures on either side. It’s these hills of azure that earned Kentucky its nickname: the Bluegrass State. There, a grazing broodmare might eyeball a car inquisitively. Up the road a ways, the sun glinting on a hood might send a herd of skittish yearlings into a stampede. It’s here that you get not only to the heart but to the soul of Lexington: This is horse country. And for the last 200 years or so, the horse of note has been the Thoroughbred.
I
t’s not clear exactly how the Bluegrass State came to be the capital of Thoroughbred breeding and racing. One theory is that by the late 18th century, settlers from Virginia brought with them a strong horse culture. It was Virginia pioneer William Whitley, in fact, who built the region’s first racetrack at his home in the 1790s. (The famed Churchill Downs would not open for another 85 years and Lexington’s oval, Keeneland Racecourse, not until 1936.) Others say it’s geological, pointing to the state’s mineral-rich water and soil as the perfect building blocks for strong-boned racehorses. Either way, over the decades the Thoroughbreds came and the champions were born.
Horsemanship Life
First-ever Triple Crown Winner Sir Barton, the revered Man o’ War, the dueling War Admiral and Seabiscuit, even the superstar mare Zenyatta were all bred in Kentucky–just to name-drop a celebrated few. (Alas, the legendary Secretariat was born in Virginia.) Today more than 40 percent of all bred Thoroughbred mares are bred on Kentucky farms.
NEW DISCIPLINES MOVE IN
B
ut look around: The equine landscape is changing. High-stepping Saddlebreds, a close Thoroughbred kin, have long shared the countryside, but in recent years other sport horses, from Quarter Horses to Warmbloods, have discovered the secret of the Bluegrass. The impetus for the influx of new breeds is attributed mostly to Lexington’s equine Mecca: the Kentucky Horse Park. Opened in 1978, the 1,200-acre theme park was the site of the first Eventing World Championships held in the United States, which paved the way for the current Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event. In 2010, following a reported $100 million-plus renovation, the park hosted the prestigious Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) and became one of the world’s most significant horse-show venues. “In the last two years we have sold more property within a five-mile radius of the Kentucky Horse Park than any other brokerage in town,” says Zach Davis, president and principal broker for the real-estate agency Kirkpatrick & Co. “What we have seen is a remarkable shift to sport-horse interests,” he adds, noting that a
few exceptional parcels have sold for as much as $93,000 an acre. “Because of that central facility, the land around the park has changed dramatically as far as value and sales.”
O
ne business publication went so far as to call the area around the horse park a “veritable show jumper alley.” Indeed, numerous show facilities, many from the Wellington, Fla., area, have set up shop around the park, as have Warmblood breeding operations. And several riders of international acclaim–such as 2012 Olympian Reed Kessler and Grand Prix Champion Derek Braun–are calling Lexington home. “Kentucky is blessed,” adds Davis. “We have a lot of land, and a lot of it is very good land.”
WESTERN COMES, TOO Western discipline riders are also among those who have found Lexington a most amenable place to work and train, pointing to available land, equine services, even the milder climate as the big draws. “We’ve got everything in our back yard here,” says Reiner and American Paint Association judge Mal McGuire, whose 30-acre stable is located just outside of Lexington in Midway. “The veterinary services are by far the best in the world, there’s the weather, and the location can’t be beat,” he adds. “We have a lot of horse shows here now, but we can go to just about any other show that we want within a three-hour drive–Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana.” McGuire was also instrumental in forming the Central Kentucky Reining Horse Association in Lexington, an affiliate of the national NRHA.

A Good life But while riders, trainers, and horse owners come for the lush equine amenities, what they soon discover is that life is pretty good here even if you’re not a horse. “When we first came here about five years ago, we were so surprised and delighted with downtown, “says hunter-jumper trainer Emily Smith, whose Florida-based Ashland Stables is headquartered in Lexington from May through November. “It has great restaurants, and the people here have such a happy, friendly attitude.”

But in the end the one thing that seems to unite all comers is the horse. “There are few things in the world that are truly universal, but I believe that the horse is one of those things,” says Davis. “No matter where you are in the world, the horse has somehow played a role. And that’s why people fall so madly in love with the region–we are so devoted to this beautiful creature.”

nother consequence of the 2010 WEG is that Lexington has enjoyed a great cultural rebirth. Its arts and entertainment district has kicked into high gear–showcasing such venues as the 23,000 seat Rupp Arena, the Lexington Opera House, and the University of Kentucky’s Singletary Center–and it’s culinary corridors have exploded. Through it all, though, the town has never lost sight of its southern charm or historic roots. It’s a big city in a small town. “Our visitors are always pleasantly surprised to discover the breadth and depth of this community,” says Mary Ramer, vice president, tourism marketing, at the Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau.

cultural exchange with the outlying regions of Tibet and broader Asia. The Tea-horse trail was an ancient passageway that extended from Yunnan to Tibet dating as far back to the Tang dynasty. The trade routes also stretched out among other regions and crossed with commerce routes of Nepal and India. Up until 70 years ago, the trade route had persisted as a critical link between China and Tibet. During the Ming and Qing dynasties the trail thrived reaching its peak during the Anti-Japanese war when large-scale horse tribes lead tens of thousands of horses, mules, camels and yaks carrying precious goods.

caravan bells would ring as they marched forward ‒ rising and falling, clear and crisp reverberating through the mountain valleys. The trail enabled a pass so that tea produced in Yunnan and Sichuan could be transported to Tibet and India. Local tribes on horseback would carry silk back the same way that created a livelihood for the people making the arduous journey. In addition to transporting tea, the horse trail was also a major route for selling salt. The Tea horse trail would split into the Sichuan-Tibet route and the Yunnan-Tibet pass, both of which crossed through the Hengduan Mountain range. Though both routes carried tea to the Tibetan region, the type of tea on each route was different. The journey through the range is narrow and steep and the terrain precarious. My son and I are horse, the horse is an eternal theme.
A
rtist Yu Fan’s artworks represent the highest level of contemporary Chinese Art. He is known famously for many horse-themed works, and creation began as early as his teenage years. His first creation was a horse. Born in Qingdao, Shandong province Yu Fan graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Fine Art in 1992. He is currently Deputy Director and Professor of the Sculpture Department at the Central Academy. Now 48, he is one of the best and brightest sculptors that emerged in the 1960s. Yu Fan has a natural talent for form from images that translate into his works. He has an innate ability to translate these depictions into his medium with mystery while captivating a modern spirit. His sculptures imbue essence of the Wei-Jin dynasties - Chinese traditional sculpture and light perception. It is clear Yu Fan has a special connection with horses. During his Master degree he composed a portrait of Genghis Khan riding horses. He also goes on to say, "My son and I are horse (born in the Chinese zodiac year of the horse), the horse is an eternal theme, the West have sculpture of horse riding, the Chinese also have Tang Ma, Han Ma. It has always been
an ongoing topic, a ‘tune’”. In 2012 Yu Fan's new creation of the horse gives us all a new experience. This symbol of the "horse" is an interpretation of a dream of his own. It is also his expression of beautiful dreams been brought to reality, the barriers encountered by them and causing sorrow and lament. From his most famous masterpiece- portrait of Genghis Khan on horseback, Yu Fan has so far about a dozen creations related to horse and counting. After 2000 Yu Fan has gradually invented his own and unique style. However, in his style it has been evolving over the course of 10 years. Simply put, Yu fan’s early horses were more humane. From the middle period onwards, his horses became more spiritual. Within the last two years, his horse works have become more abstract with religious overtones. On this point, he adds, "I was influenced heavily by an Italy sculptor Marini. At the beginning, I loved horses and was interested in the similarity between horses and human. And now I like the horse's structure, this structure can be simplified into a four-legged stool, a sense of architecture ". When it comes to future work of horses, Yu Fan has no specific plans. He goes on to say, "I am still waiting for a brand new and different horse to come to me, instead of me looking for it.”.
