Capture the Funshine
in Tempe!
Tempe, a vibrant urban oasis in the heart of the Phoenix area, has its own personality. This refreshingly offbeat college town is home to Arizona State University (ASU), one of the largest universities in the country. It’s just minutes from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and accessible via Valley Metro Rail. Tempe’s spirited lifestyle is welcoming and creates a contagious energy. Attend a fun-filled outdoor festival, see a theater production, go on a scenic desert hike or try paddleboarding at Tempe Town Lake. Achieve your personal best at the Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon or IRONMAN Arizona, or just relax poolside underneath a colorful umbrella. Tempe, Arizona has long been a haven for energetic travelers who like their winters mild and their days sunny. Here in the sunsplashed Sonoran Desert, the list of things to do is as long as it is unexpected.

Destinations
Valley Metro Rail provides a convenient way to travel through Tempe and access Downtown Phoenix, Downtown Mesa and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Valley Metro Rail and local buses share the same fare structure – a pass purchased for light rail can also be used for a bus. One ride is $2.00 and an all-day pass is $4.00. Multiple day passes are also available and bicycles are welcome on board. Light rail trains arrive every 12-20 minutes, depending on the time of day and day of the week. Trip planning assistance, fare options and schedules can be found at the Valley Metro website: valleymetro.org. Here are a few ideas of what you can explore on light rail. Downtown Tempe and the ASU Tempe Campus Veteran’s Way | College Avenue From here you can access the Tempe Transportation Center, which is the hub for both Valley Metro buses and the free Orbit neighborhood circulators. Traversing
Trails
A HIKING AND BIKING GUIDE
The natural Sonoran Desert landscape can be discovered easily from Tempe. From a leisurely stroll along cactus-lined pathways to heart pumping bike rides, you’ll find the right fit for your level of adventure. Here are a few of the most popular trails in and around Tempe – just minutes from any of our hotels.
A
PAPAGO PARK is centrally located, bordered by Tempe, Phoenix and Scottsdale. There are more than 10 miles of trails that roll through the hills, perfect for hikers and mountain bikers. Trails are accessible from College Avenue and Curry Road and along Galvin Parkway near the Phoenix Zoo. Bike riders should check out the Cross Cut Canal Path, a paved pathway lined with public art and scenic overlooks. The entrance is on the east side of Mill Avenue, just north of Curry Road.
B
“A” MOUNTAIN is one of the most popular hiking trails in Tempe. It is located in the middle of our downtown and is easily recognizable with the large gold A, for Arizona State University, on its south side. The hike to the top is quick, but steep towards the end of the trail. From its peak, you can see Tempe Town Lake, Downtown Tempe and the ASU campus. Trails with less of an incline wrap around the south side of the mountain. Access the trails from Third Street and Mill Avenue.
C
SOUTH MOUNTAIN PARK AND PRESERVE is one of the largest municipal parks in the United States with more than 16,000 acres. There are 51 miles of horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking trails that navigate through this scenic desert environment. Choose from intense trails with steep inclines, or flat trails that allow a relaxing, close-up look at desert plants. The closest trailhead is located off of 48th Street, just north of Guadalupe Road.
D
CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN is one of the most iconic, and challenging, hiking destinations in the Phoenix area. For this reason, the parking lot can fill up very quickly, especially during the winter and spring. If the entry gate is closed, hikers are asked to return 15-20 minutes later to see if parking is available. Camelback Mountain is located north of Tempe. The Echo Canyon Trail is located on McDonald Drive, near Tatum Boulevard. The Cholla Trail is located on Cholla Lane, a street south of McDonald Drive on the west side of Invergordon Road.
E
PIESTEWA PEAK in Phoenix is surrounded by Phoenix Mountains Park and Recreation Area and Dreamy Draw Recreation Area. The popular summit trail rises more than 1,100 feet. There are also dozens of hiking and biking trails around the mountain that are less strenuous, but equally beautiful. Trailheads are located off of Squaw Peak Drive, near Lincoln Drive/Glendale Avenue, just west of 24th Street, and at 32nd Street and Lincoln.

INSIDER TIPS: • Find out more about local hiking areas on the Tempe Tourism website: tempetourism.com/things-todo/sports-recreation/hiking. • Always wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water when hiking. Dressing in layers is key, as the temperatures in the desert can change drastically in one day. • Avoid hiking by yourself and always tell someone where you are going. • Be on the lookout for wildflowers in the desert from late February to early June, with the peak season from mid-March to late-April. • Go with an expert who can answer all of your questions about the desert.
