Augmented Reality Aurasma: One app, many possibilities Augmented reality as been picked as one of the top 10 hot tech topics in 2013 What is AR? Augmented Reality is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, realworld environment whose elements are augmented by computergenerated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data. Simply put, AR is the layering of photos and animations over a real world environment typically on a computer.

Heralded as a technology of the future, many expect that it will be a while before augmented reality sees widespread adoption, especially in education where the annual K-12 Horizon Report, which analyzes trends in education technology, puts its projected time to adoption in the classroom at four to five years from now.

Aurasma App Aurasma is a free app that Bring tagged images, objects and even physical locations to life with interactive digital content, such as video, animations and 3D scenes, we call Auras. It’s a little tricky to learn how to use so I’d recommend eyeballing this tutorial on how to do it: http://www.aurasma.com/aura/ 3

Aurasma in Education Augmented reality applications can complement a standard curriculum. Text, graphics, video and audio can be superimposed into a studentĘźs real time environment. Textbooks, flashcards and other educational reading material can contain embedded “markersâ€? that, when scanned by an AR device, produce supplementary information to the student rendered in a multimedia format. Students can participate interactively with computer generated simulations of historical events, exploring and learning details of each significant area of the event site. AR can aide students in understanding chemistry by allowing them to visualize the spatial structure of a molecule and interact with a virtual model of it that appears, in a camera image, positioned at a marker held in their hand. Augmented reality technology also permits learning via remote collaboration, in which students and instructors not at the same physical location can share a common virtual learning environment populated by virtual objects and learning materials and interact with another within that setting.

Thanks to Aurasma, every image, object and even place can have its own Aura. Auras can be as simple as a video and a link to a web page or as complex as a lifelike 3D animation. Use the Aurasma app to unlock Auras and share the experience with friends. Or get experimenting and use the simple tools within the app to create and share your own Auras.

How Educators are using AR through the Aurasma App Dan McWilliam, who taught Calgary Science’s seventh grade iPad pilot last year, first discovered the technology when he saw a video of an app that could scan ordinary baseball cards to reveal a video of the player and wondered if there were similar apps that could be used in the classroom. McWilliam introduced Aurasma to his class during a Year in Review project in December, intending to show students that they were living history. “The inquiry question was what events from 2011 will become history and which will be forgotten?” McWilliam said. "Students in groups chose an event that they thought would be remembered in 50 years time, and then using their iPads they then created a short iMovie, a short descriptive documentary about what the event was and why they thought it would be remembered." A second part of the assignment required students to create a poster about their chosen event that could be displayed in the school’s hallway. Using Aurasma, they linked their poster to the video, so that "visitors to our hallway would not only get the surface, analog data, but then using a device, they could hold it up and access the digital content," McWilliam said. "Like a QR code but without the QR." The novelty of the technology, along with its prominent placement, ended up bringing a larger audience to the students' projects. "It was really neat to see parents, staff members, and other students being invited by students saying, “Mom and dad, you have to come see our school.” McWilliam recalled. "And then they were looking at each other’s work as well."

Using Aurasma in an MD Middle School Classroom: The Team Approach

issue, date

When I first ran across Aurasma, I could see the potential for the use it in education but was somewhat flummoxed as to just exactly how to use it. When the app first came out it was confusing as just how to create an aura and then how to connect the a “trigger” picture (the picture triggers the video) to the video was a whole other complicated mess. A few months ago Aurasma revamped the app and made it more user friendly with step by step instructions on how to use it. It still isn’t completely “friendly” but it’s better than it was. After several weeks of playing around with it I created a simple video about how to make hot chocolate in the microwave linked it to a “trigger” picture of a Boardmaker microwave. When the Aurasma app is open and the student holds the iPad over the picture of the microwave the video automatically pops up on the iPad and plays. Pretty cool, eh? Now can you see the possibilities? So I showed this aura to the MD teacher and the COTA and immediately we started to brainstorm and shot another 2 more videos of how to safely slice a potato and linked it to a Boardmaker picture of “slicing”. When the student needs to review how to safely slice something they open the Aurasma app and pass it over the picture and immediately the video pops up and starts to play. We also did one for folding towels, opening a can with a can opener, peeling a carrot, closing a chip bag and using a chip clip and have plans for others. I’m going to have my 3rd grade ED students create a video using Educreations describing a landform of their choice. They will then take a picture of that landform and hang it up on the wall as a “trigger” picture. Each of the students can then just hold their iPad up to the picture and see the video their classmates created for about each landform.

How are you using Aurasma? Let me know and I’ll include it in the next issue. 6

recorded the function of each item in question form. Such as “which one would you use to make a smoothy?” The student would then touch the blender and a green checkmark would appear on the blender picture. If the child chooses the wrong picture it will be taken away and the choices will then be narrowed down. You can pick how many pictures you want to appear on a board. This is good for alternative assessment because you can then put 3 to 4 pictures on one board for choices. You can put up from 2 to 16 picture choices.

How to use Bitsboard in therapy: You can create your own board with pictures and record information about each picture. I used it with my high school MH students prior to a cooking activity. I took pictures of the items and utensils that would be used during the activity and

I made one for my MD high school students for baking a cake. Just go to the catalog setting in the app and type in “baking a cake” in the search box and it will pop up for you to download.

ReadWriteThink’s Trading Cards app (it’s free) allows kids and teens a unique way to share their understanding of various topics, to build study aids for school, or to create their own fictional world of characters.

Create trading cards for any number of categories, including:
• Fictional person
• Real person
• Fictional place
• Real place
• Object
• Event
• Vocabulary word

Each category has specific guiding questions for creating a dynamic, information-rich trading card. Summarizing skills are critical as they drill down to the most important information to fit on the card. In addition, they become aware of writing for an audience because they can share their cards with others.

Part of the appeal of trading cards is being able to sort them into collections. Have kids and teens build a collection of cards for characters from their favorite book, landmarks in their favorite city, events from a period in history they find interesting, or vocabulary words by school subject.

How to use Trading Cards in the Curriculum: Create a set of trading cards about characters in a novel, create a set of cards about people of historical significance, or create cards about places that the students are studying in their geography lessons. Create 2 cards comparing 2 real places or 2 fictional places. Create a card about an event from a historical period. Create a vocabulary card about a new word. The best part of this app is the “guiding” questions it asks to help the student fill in the fields on the front and back of the card. Many of the questions are two part questions. If your classroom has a mix of iPads and computers all students can complete the same assignment because the app and the web version offer the same creation features.

Sometimes teaching inferencing skills is harder than trying to nail jello to a tree! Pinpointing apps that help to foster these skills can be just as frustrating. Judy has been working with her 1st and 2nd grade students utilizing the following apps below in therapy.

From the Desk of Judy Caruso: Talk About It Objects – Pro Edition – I really like the recording feature on this app. It let’s me know how the students are expressing their thoughts. Guess Who? Guess Where? What Are They Asking? Super Duper Fun Deck – Allows you to tally their responses and print it out. Describe It Free website: I just recently found this website and am going to use it with my students as an extension lesson to go along with the inferencing unit. The website is called CubertsCube. It is an excellent site for creative writing for kids 7-12 years of age. It’s easy to use after you set up your class. The drawing sections if really easy and fun too.

This way to Map Apps Geography, orienteering, directionality, topography … these are all skills that can be taught, reinforced and enhanced through map apps. I’ve been using Wundermap with my students in the iPad Lab for the last several weeks and they love it!

Wundermap (free)

Ok, what’s so great about this map app? Well for starters it’s a map with weather and webcams from all over the world that allow you to view up to date outdoor shots of weather. I particularly like to look at the webcam shot in Puerto Rico! So here’s what it does: shows CURRENT CONDITIONS from the world’s largest network of personal weather stations – including temperature, dew point, humidity, precipitation, wind speed, wind direction and pressure

4. It gives you 4 DAY FORECASTS – enter a location in the search box or scroll across the map and the forecast will update for the center location in your view. It shows
ANIMATED PRECIPITATION (Radar, US only)

ANIMATED CLOUD (Satellite) as well as
LIVE WEB CAMS – literally view live weather from across the world. You can
choose your map’s interface – satellite view, street map view or a hybrid.
You can also select between Fahrenheit and Celsius. 18

Corkulous, Videolicious, Talking Tom & Ben News

1. You are planning a vacation with 4 different stops around the world, gather the data you need at each location and then make a list of clothing you would pack based upon the data collected. Using Corkulous make a board showing screen shots of the place, a brief description of the weather and pictures of the clothes you’d pack. 2. Students can identify how global patterns of atmospheric movement influences local weather using the WunderMap app. students would use the internet to acquire weather data and information on pressures and fronts. The students could then use Videolicious app to create a “weather forecast” presentation. Images for Videolicious could be screenshots from the app and actual images taken of the weather outside. Students would also be provided with the vocabulary (e.g. front, high pressure, low pressure, air mass, etc…) they must use in their presentation. 3. Students can create weather reports using the Talking Tom & Ben News app. Prior to recording their weather report, students gathered weather data in their journals using personal observations and the app WunderMap 19

My friend Jen (tech supervisor for Trumbull County ESC) and planned and hosted our first “Appy Hour” at the beginning of January. It was a get together for therapists and educators who use iPad with their students. The turnout was great with 38 people attending. We spotlighted 3 apps and broke into 3 user groups. The time flew by and everybody left with many new apps, which they downloaded on the spot and ideas on how to use them. We are looking forward to our next Appy Hour on March 7th!

Tips for Starting Your Own “Appy Hour” • Spotlight a few apps in detail but spend no more than 5 minutes on each one • Have an agenda • Know who your audience is made up of (speech therapists, OTs, elementary/JH/HS teachers, administrators, others) • Have eats/treats/drinks (you don’t want people to be “hangry” (so hungry they are get angry) • Have a moderator for each breakout group to keep the app sharing moving • Have a way to collect feedback (SurveyMonkey) to make future improvements
