Salamanca & Ellicottville

Seneca Nation of Indians

Salamanca is home to the Seneca Nation of Indians, one of the original Five Nations of the Haudenosaunee, or Iroquois Confederacy. This union was created to bring peace to the Haudenosaunee, or “People of the Longhouse,” as they call themselves. Comprised of chiefs from the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and Mohawk, it operated under an unwritten code of conduct known as the Great Law of Peace. This union was later expanded to include the Tuscarora, becoming the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Seneca have lived in and cared for the forests, valleys, and shorelines of what is now Western New York, since before recorded history. The riches of this land and these waters are revered among the Seneca, as is their obligation to pass along this legacy. Today the Seneca Nation has over 7,600 enrolled members and holds title to three main territories in Western New York, the Cattaraugus, Allegany, and Oil Spring. The vibrancy of their rich heritage is evident in the cultural events, dance, music, arts, crafts and foods that visitors are invited to experience. One of the area’s best cultural events, The Marvin “Joe” Curry Veterans Pow Wow will be held July

15th-17th. Pow Wow weekend is the perfect opportunity to experience the culture, heritage and beauty of the Seneca Nation through song, dance, art, and food. The Marvin “Joe” Curry Veteran’s Pow Wow showcases the Native American culture across Indian Country, while focusing on the Smoke Dance of the Iroquois and honoring Native American Veterans. You’ll see dance competitions with full authentic outfits as well as drum contests and traditional songs. The Seneca Nation has plenty of gaming entertainment, including three casinos and three gaming facilities. The Seneca Allegany Casino offers the hottest performers at affordable prices. Scheduled this summer are the Steve Miller Band and Kenny Rogers as well as Travis Tritt and Ringo Starr.

Ellicottville: Not just a great ski town Ellicottville may be best known as the “Aspen of the East” with Holiday Valley and Holimont ski resorts located within a few miles of the village center. However, the town doesn’t slow down in the summertime. There’s just as many exciting outdoor adventures to be discovered during the summer.

The Sky High Adventure Park allows you to venture through the trees through different courses, resting on platforms. The platforms are connected by logs, hanging chunks of wood or other obstacles where you have to plan your steps and footing to make it from each obstacle piece to the next. Of course you are always safe and harnessed up with guides close by. Ages 7 and up are welcome. For the kids ages 5 and up, they can be challenged at the climbing forest. Ten trees with ranging difficulties allows the harnessed climber to reach the top of the tree, then the auto belay system returns them safely to the ground! This is a great activity for families, couples, teenagers, as well as adults.

From Route 17 to Interstate 86 Route 17 was originally a two-lane road from the 1930s through the 1960s, when it was converted to a four lane highway. This 381 mile highway stretches from the Pennsylvania State line in the western part of New York State to Interstate 87 in the east. As far back as 1955, when the National Interstate Highway System was being planned and developed, New York State officials hoped to have Route 17 serve as the region’s primary east-west interstate. In 1998, when Transportation Equity Act for the 21 Century (TEA-21) was

passed, Interstate 86 became a part of High Priority Corridor 36 which added Route 17 to the future interstate system. This allowed New York State to begin the conversion of Route 17 to Interstate 86. Upgrading Route 17 to interstate standards will improve New York’s transportation system and enhance access to the numerous businesses and municipalities along the corridor, while providing tremendous opportunities for economic development in the Southern Tier and lower Hudson Valley. It will put this area of New York State “on the map” for business investors and tourists both within New York and nationally.

Trolley into Twain Country Guided Tour

Chemung County

Elmira, NY: Mark Twain Country

Mark Twain became a fixture in the Elmira community when he married Elmira native Olivia Langdon in 1870. The couple and their children spent more than twenty years summering at Quarry Farm, the home of Olivia’s sister, Susan Crane, and it was here that he wrote much of his work in the octagonal study built expressly for him. Twain’s study was

located a short walk from the main house and overlooked the serpentine Chemung River, whose waters were said to have an inspirational effect on Twain. Roughing It, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Prince and the Pauper, A Tramp Abroad, Life on the Mississippi, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court as well as many shorter pieces were worked on during these many summers.

Aerial View of Harris Hill. Elmira, NY

Soaring in Elmira Soaring Capital of America Soaring, also known as “motorless flight”, originated in Germany and first started in the US at Elmira’s Harris Hill. Planes with elongated wings are towed by a motor plane a few thousand feet before being released to soar silently overhead. The prominence of soaring in the Chemung River Valley owes a great deal to the geography and topography of the area. With its majestic hills and deep valleys, the updraft from its ridge makes Harris Hill a naturally suited environment for glider flight. The first 13 National soaring contests were held at Harris Hill from 1930-1946, and it continues to draw thousands from across the globe each year, who come for glider rides or to watch the excitement from below.

Chemung County supports the completion of I-86; linking 2.9 million business and leisure travelers, from Buffalo to New York City through the Southern Finger Lakes region, safely and eficiently.

Several other factors also contribute to the area being central to the history of soaring. The former Schweizer Aircraft Corp. which produced half of all American-built sailplanes, was located at the bottom of Harris Hill. Additionally, at

the outbreak of WWII, Elmira was the first site chosen to develop a glider program and train pilots for the war effort. In 1969, the SSA (Soaring Society of America) designated Harris Hill as the site for the National Soaring Museum. Home to the world’s largest soaring collection, the museum also hosts a variety of soaring races and events, including the International Vintage Sailplane Meet, which will be held July 9-16, 2016. This event features many rare and one-of-a-kind vintage gliders.

Tioga County

Early Owego Antique Center. Owego, NY

The antiques business has experienced a renaissance over the last few years in Tioga County, New York. Owego, the county seat, is a historic village beautifully situated along the Susquehanna River. Directly off Interstate 86 (Route 17), it is a pleasant and easily-reached destination. The historic town center is a popular, walkable shopping district with a surprising number of antique shops. Although Owego has always had a thriving downtown area with independently-owned shops and restaurants, it has recently become a haven for antique dealers and their customers.

Decades ago, the row of shops lining the river was so renowned for its abundance of antiques dealers that it was sometimes called “Owego’s Antique Row.” Still the main thoroughfare of the village, the shops are known today as “Riverow,” and offer many wares, but antiques remain prevalent. Over the years, shops have changed hands and the Village of Owego has experienced many challenges, from fire to floods. The most recent flood in September of 2011 devastated the shopping district and shut down the village. The local economy was slow to recover. Despite this setback, the community and store owners rallied, rolled up their sleeves, and helped the village regain its vibrancy. Ask anyone in Owego and you will hear there was no doubt that the village would bounce back. However, no one could predict that antique shops would spring up on nearly every corner.

The most prominent example of this phenomenon is the Early Owego Antique Center on the corner of Lake Street and Main Street. Formerly a J. J. Newberry’s department store (the vintage neon Newberry’s sign still hangs on the side of the building), Early Owego features a wide variety of vintage furniture, dishware, décor, clothing, and jewelry from over 90 vendors in a bright, clean showroom with friendly and knowledgeable staff. A sign in front of Early Owego Antiques will point you in the direction of several other antique shops in Owego. The nearest neighbor is Dunbar Antiques, with antiques and collectibles that include linen, estate glass, handmade Persian rugs, vintage clothing, and always a few surprising finds. A few more paces brings you to the Left Bank, a bright, refined, and whimsical collection of quality furniture, jewelry, and collectibles. Just another quick jaunt down the block takes you to Wabi Sabi, meaning “the perfectly imperfect,” where vintage goods are repurposed and reborn for contemporary life. Just across the street, the Riverow Bookshop is one of the foremost antiquarian bookstores in the region. Another block away, MANtiques offers a masculine spin on the traditional antique shop with movie posters, memorabilia, toys and vintage collectibles that would be at home in any man’s cave. Just across the street is This and That Downstairs, which features wooden furniture and glassware from all eras in excellent condition. A quick trip by car will take you to Grandma’s Cottage with its eclectic mix of furniture and other “unique junque,” as their sign reads, to Aunt Bea’s Furniture, and to Kitty Corner Antiques, which donates a portion of proceeds from furniture and other antiques to Happy Tails Animal Rescue.

For more information or to request a Tioga County Antiques Trail brochure, contact Tioga County Tourism at 607-687-7440 dishware to collectible toys and tools. Continuing west just a few more miles brings you to the town of Waverly, where new antique shops have also taken root. The Crooked River Co-Op is housed in the historic fire station on Broad Street, and has multiple floors filled with estate sale treasures. A short stroll will reveal more quirky finds and thrift store treasures, making Waverly yet another growing antique destination in Tioga County. Tioga County offers a wealth of antique shops in historic towns connected by good roads and scenic countryside. A trip to western New York or the Finger Lakes region would not be complete without a stop in Tioga County to explore the many wonderful stores, restaurants, and outdoor spaces for all to enjoy.

From this humble beginning, the sport has spread and flourished across the country. Fishing Season begins April 1st in the Great Western Catskills with close to 900 miles of trout streams and the Cannonsville and Pepacton Reservoirs. Fishing is a passion shared by many and these world-class waterways are bound to satisfy even the most discerning of enthusiasts. concerts and the regular Sunday Farmers Market. Dutch hunters traveling west from the Hudson Valley first settled the area in the 1600’s. Here, they found a location on the banks of a river where, among other sources of food, there was an abundance of wild turkey.
