May 2016

A note from the Mayor... I was a mere 18 years old when the first Dogwood Festival took place in May 1966 and was not even in Dansville at the time, having graduated from DHS the year before and enlisted in the Marines to “see the world”. Much has changed about Dansville since then, but the festival has been a constant. Fifty years is a long run for anything. It represents commitment and community pride on the part of the many citizens who have served over the years on the festival committee. They deserve our gratitude not just because of the fun the event brings to our community, but because it also gives Dansville regional exposure that helps build our future. Yes, it is more than a footnote in the history books and an amusing time. This year, as we celebrate the Dogwood Festival’s golden anniversary, let us not forget the milestone’s significance and those you made it possible. Take a moment to reflect on it and to thank those past and present for their dedication. Best wishes to all and have an enjoyable time,

Peter Vogt Mayor

Red Cross Museum to Pilot Clara Barton in Dansville Walking Tour

DANSVILLE— Come see the Village of Dansville through Clara Barton’s eyes on this guided heritage walk on Friday and Saturday mornings, May 13 and 14, from 11- 12 pm during the 50th Anniversary Dogwood Festival. Starting with an in-

S

troduction at Clara Barton, Chapter #1 and an exterior site walk, the walking tour will proceed north along Elizabeth Street, round the corner of Perine and continue south along Main Street, stopping atlocal points of historic interest that re-

late to Clara Barton such as Bastian’s Pharmacy and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where the earliest meetings occurred among the charter members of the local Red Cross Society thatfounded the historic first Chapter in 1881. Connections to the famous architect Claude Bragdon, as well as the prominent Hartman-Noyes and Jackson families will also be considered as they pertain to Clara Barton in Dansville. Why is it called heritage walk? Not because it is a costumed interpretation on this occasion, but because

the museum has been brought outside its walls into the streets of the downtown historic district. Heritage walks blend landscape, architecture, local, and sometimes even oral history together; thus illustrative passages from Clara Barton’s journals, letters, and autobiography will be used to celebrate and recreate her time in Dansville. How do we handle the sites that are either no longer standing or are outside the bounds of the walking tour route? The presentation will incorporate primary source visual aids, such as historic then-

Dansville Dogwood Festival 50 Years - “Then and Now” By Jasmine Willis Genesee Country Express DANSVILLE — Now that we have reached this milestone, it is time to look back at the last five decades of this time honored tradition. The Dansville 50th Annual Dogwood Festival began with one simple idea … bring people to the historic area. The Dansville Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event the first year, and Jerry Rauber planned and coordinated it. A couple years later the torch was passed to Dogwood Festival Chairman Barry Haywood, who has been doing it ever since. “Jerry wanted to highlight the dogwoods at the Fish and Game Club. They were not a traditional part of this country, but Fish and Game had a whole grove of them,” Haywood said. “That is why dogwoods

were used to promote the event. Naming it Dogwood Festival was a great move, because people have been maintaining the presence of them in Dansville ever since. It was a huge attraction until they died at the Fish and Game Club.” “This is my 48th year being Chairman of the Festival,” Haywood continued. “I was born and raised in Dansville and came back to teach in 1967. In 1968 I helped getting school bands in the parade. The Dansville Chamber of Commerce sponsored and organized the event, and asked me to take over. I went out and got 10 more organizations to help in 1969.” When Haywood took over the event, it went from two days to three days. Each organization had to have a member sit on the committee to help plan the festival. Ever since 1971 the festival has been a seven-

day triumph. Haywood and his committee of six people have worked diligently to get this big accomplishment ready. Among the new things this year are fireworks on Saturday, May 14 at Babcock Park around dusk; Teen Dance Friday, May 13 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Firemen’s Pavilion at Babcock Park; Pet Parade Thursday, May 12 at 6 p.m. located at Babcock Park; Clara Barton Chapter Tours Monday, May 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 10 from 1 to 4 p.m., Wednesday, May 11 from 1 to 4 p.m., and Thursday, May 12 from 1 to 4 p.m.; Clara Barton Walking Tours Friday, May 13 from 11 a.m. to noon, and Saturday, May 14 from 11 a.m. to noon; Dansville Artworks Watercolor Demo Workshop Wednesday, May 11 from 4:30 to 6 p.m., Dansville Artworks Mr. Scribbles Saturday, May 14 from

10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Dansville Artworks Art Supply Sidewalk Sale Saturday, May 14 from noon until 3 p.m.; Roots of Rock and Roll presentation at Dansville Mini Mart at 8 p.m.; and Classic Car Show Saturday, May 14 from noon until 4 p.m. on Main Street. The 36th Annual Bazaar is now sponsored by the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Youth Ministry. Haywood added there will be a window decoration contest on and off Main Street businesses that can be done by local artists, business owners, or children. The judging will take place on May 7 before the festival. They did this for the first time in 1975. “We want to get all businesses involved,” he said. “The big thing is to attract people to the area, and we will be judging the art.” Having this festival for 50 years is no small feet. “This is a huge accomplish-

Chairman of the Festival Barry Haywood ment for our community,” he said. “The purpose of this event has always been

to promote Dansville. No other village or town in the area has accomplished

something like this for 50 years.” Some big names used to come to the festival in its infancy, but eventually it became too expensive for the committee. Haywood recalls his favorites being Former Miss America Phyllis George in 1973, and Jackie Gleason Show TV Personality Frank Fontaine in 1972. There used to be plenty more TV Stars and Movie Stars in the festival, as well as big bands. “I enjoyed it because I got to host them,” he said. “I made sure they got a hotel, but I also got to show them around Dansville.” In the past years there was a Dogwood Ball sponsored

by the Lions Club in the Jr. High School, Castle on the Hill, and Brae Burn. “It got to be too expensive and too difficult to decorate until 2 a.m. and have to get ready for the parade the next day,” Haywood said. Haywood enjoys being part of the festival, and is glad people trust him to get it done. The Floats and Firemen Parade will be judged again. Floats are $100 for First Prize, $75 for Second Prize, and $25 for Third Prize. All of the school bands get $200. The fire departments get trophies. Miss Natale’s Dansville Dance Center students will dance from 4 to 5 p.m.

Page 7

“This has become a familyfriendly event,” Haywood said. “People like to get there really early and line up chairs for the parade.” Haywood added that a woman will be portraying Clara Barton during the parade this year, and people are asked to try and find her. “We really want to bring people to Dansville, and show that we have good things,” he said. “We have great stores on and off Main Street. We have a historic main street. That is why we are having people walk around to see the architecture.” Dansville 50th Annual Dogwood Festival runs May 9 to May 15.

Dansville Artworks proud to take part in festival By Jasmine Willis Genesee Country Express DANSVILLE — The new Main Street art gallery is looking forward to taking part in the big 50th celebration of the Dogwood Festival. Dansville Artworks Director Lucus Nice said there are several events scheduled involving the only main street art gallery in Livingston County. They will kick-off the festival with a watercolor demo workshop from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11. “Peggy Martinez will do our watercolor demo for us, and everyone is excited about that,” Nice said. “Anyone is welcome to come to that.” Nice said there will be two art supply sidewalk sales on Friday, May 13 from

noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday, May 14 from noon to 3 p.m. “We would also like to thank Barry and the whole Dogwood Committee for helping to sponsor Mr. Scribbles for the art

gallery,” he said. “This is our first time having him here.” Mr. Scribbles will be there Saturday, May 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Whoever would like to come in and see him can,” Nice said. “It is open and

free to the public for all ages. Anyone who is walking around, and has time to stop by can check it out.” Nice added it is good to be part of this historic festival. Before he was at Dansville Artworks, Nice was an in-

terim manager at Clara Barton House, and would love to walk with the American Red Cross again during the parade. “I am excited for the Dansville Past, Present, and Future gallery coming up, and hope to collaborate

something with the Clara Barton Museum, Dansville Historical Society, and Dansville Artworks,” Nice said. “We want to focus on the Sanitarium (Castle on the Hill) and Clara Barton. We also want to feature the Granula.” “We are still coming up with ideas, but we would like a Granula exhibit up in the front window, and talk about the history of the Castle on the Hill and Clara Barton,” Nice continued. Nice added that anyone is free to stop by and see what other events are coming up.
