DERIVAN MEDIUMS 101 a quick and easy guide to some of our favourite derivan mediums
LIGHT MODELLING PASTE This paste has a light, fluffy icing type texture and is perfect for use with templates and mixed media projects. • Is lighter in weight than regular impasto. • Can be used in large quantities without causing canvas to stretch or sag. • Dries to a matte white finish unlike Impasto. • Frothy texture can be used straight from container or easily combined with inks and acrylic paints. • Easily blended together for interesting textural effects. • Is suitable for use with dry pastels.
WATER BASED PATINA This is an ideal glazing medium. • Dries clear and is non yellowing. • Drying time is 48 hours. • Use to create faux patinas. • Create a faux aged effect by coating your project in Water-Based Patina, then rubing a small amount of dark Matisse acrylic paint over the piece and wiping back with a clean cloth!
GESSO This product seals and prepares a surface for either acrylic, oil or mixed media projects. • Use as a primer to prevent paint soaking into surface. • Flexible and permanent • Waterbased - Can be thinned with water. • Dictate the surface style you want e.g. rough - use a coarse bristled brush, OR smooth - soft brush and sand between each application. • Draw into it while wet with the end of a brush for a unique texture and apply inks after it has dried.
MATT MEDIUM • Low sheet “velvety”matte finish • Great to use on products that you are intending to photograph as it won't reflect light - ideal for reproduction work. • Use as a matte finish adhesive for collage/mixed media. • Mix in 20% Matt Medium to acrylic paint especially for projects with large coloured areas. • Though white in colour, it will not affect the colour of the paint, only make it more transparent.
GEL MEDIUM This product is probably the most versatile product in the range because it has multiple uses. • Can be used as an adhesive for collage/ mixed media as it dries clear with gloss finish. • Enables you to layer paint and wipe back as necessary to uncover what is underneath. • Thick like impasto but not as much height. • Use to extend your paint, great for glazing with texture. • Holds moderate peaks and textures. • Good for knife painting and embedding objects i.e. dry medium range.
IMPASTO MEDIUM • Thick paste - for textural strokes with brush or pallet knife. • Ideal for creating texture on your projects. • Dries opaque, not fully transparent, with a low sheen. • Tint it with Matisse Structure Paint. • Create stunning results by adding inks or paints over the top of Impasto textured backgrounds that have dried.
