NOT JUST FOR SUMMER

VI S I TI NG

Lake Michigan in the winter

Visiting Lake Michigan in the winter is a stark contrast to the liveliness of a warm summer’s day at the Big Lake. The quiet, frozen splendor of an empty beach is a whole new landscape to explore. Mountains of snow and ice rise up where the beach is usually found. The white goes on and on. Ice curls around the pier and snow caves just wait to be discovered.

Safely explore the beauty of winter at Lake Michigan with these 5 tips: BUNDLE UP Silver Beach St. Joseph

It is always colder and windier at the lake. Bring snow pants, gloves, hats and extra layers of everything!

STAY SAFE

There are large crevices in the snow and steep drop-offs onto ice that may appear to be solid might actually be paper thin. There is real danger at the lake so use caution when venturing beyond the beach and obey all posted safety signs.

BE PHOTO-READY

Phone batteries do not work in extreme cold. If you’d like to take pictures, keep your phone warm in a pocket inside your coat.

PACK EXTRA DRY CLOTHES

In case someone gets wet, warm and dry clothes are a lifesaver once you are back in your car.

BRING A THERMOS WITH HOT CHOCOLATE Nothing better than a warm drink on a cold day!

HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS

Sledding Hills in WEST MICHIGAN We love Pigeon Creek Park in West Olive - their sledding hills have an easy ramp back to the top (not as steep as the hill) and a lodge with a fireplace to warm up or grab a snack and hot chocolate!

Our favorite spot is Mulick Park. The large hill varies in height so there is a steeper section for bigger kids and a bunny hill for littles.

Pigeon Creek Park

Pigeon Creek! Always a fun time there and now they have concessions for you to buy hot cocoa and warm up.

WHEN IN MICHIGAN...

How to Play EUCHRE If you live in the Mitten state, learning how to play Euchre is a right of passage. (And a favorite way to pass the long winter months!) Teach your kids this fun card game to give them instant Michigander street cred.

The Basics

Euchre is a trick-taking card game for two sets of partners. Partners sit across from one another and may not reveal their hand. There are five tricks to each game and the goal is to win at least three tricks. The team first to earn 10 points wins.

The Deck

Use the 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of each suit from a typical playing deck, for a total of 24 cards. Hand two 5 cards to each team for tracking points.

Card Rankings

The highest trump is the Jack of the selected suit, called the “right bower.” The 2nd highest card is the Jack of the same color as the trump suit, called the “left bower.” Other suits rank down from Aces high.

The Set Up

Each player is dealt five cards. The dealer deals clockwise and places the remaining four cards in the center of the table, and turns the top card face up. This "Up Card" helps determine trump suit. The remaining cards are not used in the hand.

The Up Card and Determining the Trump Suit

Each player in turn decides whether or not to use the suit of the Up Card as the trump suit. If the Up Card is chosen, the dealer takes the top card into his or her hand and discards one. If the Up Card is not accepted, then the player to the right of the dealer may name the trump suit or pass to the next person.

18

GRKIDS Family Fun Guide | Winter 2020

Going Alone

If a player called the trump suit and has a strong hand, he or she may “go alone” to play without a partner, garnering extra points.

How to Take a Trick

The player to the right of the dealer leads with a card and every player must follow with the suit of the lead card, if able. The player with the highest card in the suit takes the trick unless a trump card is played. If this happens, the highest value trump card wins.

How to Score

Team takes 3 or 4 tricks – 1 point Team takes all 5 tricks – 2 points “Going Alone” takes 3 or 4 tricks – 1 point “Going Alone” takes 5 tricks – 4 points

Snow Fort 101

Master the art of snow fort building with recommendations from a Canadian 80’s dad. His 6 tips guarantee an impressive, safe snow fort for your family.

Thanks

Dad!

Step by Step EPIC SNOW FORT How-To

30

1

Sketch a basic design of the snow fort.

2

Find a flat area away from roads, trees and bushes. Draw the shape of your snow fort’s foundation in the snow, remembering to leave room for a doorway. (Due to risk of collapse, do not create a tunnel as your entrance.) Pack down the snow that will make the floor of your snow fort.

3

Fill a medium-sized rectangular plastic tub with snow to create bricks. If the snow is light and fluffy, add a bit of water to increase the density. Lay your snow bricks in a classic brick pattern with a bit of space in between each brick. Fill those spaces with snow. Continue to lay your bricks on top of the last layer in your snow fort, and stack up to your desired height.

4

Use bed sheets as your roof (to avoid a snowy collapse!). Tuck them under your top level of bricks.

5

String up low-powered LED lights inside to illuminate the space and to keep heat emissions to a minimum.

6

Pour a hot chocolate and relax in your epic snow fort!
