public library In a traditional sense, a library is a large collection of books, and can refer to the place in which the collection is housed. Today, the term can refer to any collection, including digital sources, resources, and services. The collections can be of print, audio, and visual materials in numerous formats, including maps, prints, doc uments, microform (microfilm/microfiche), CDs, cassettes, videotapes, DVDs, video games, e-books, audiobooks and many other electronic resources. The term has acquired a secondary meaning: „a collection of useful material for common use.“ Libraries often provide a place of silence for studying, and they also often offer common areas to accomodate for group study and collaboration. Libraries often provide public facilities to access to their electronic resources and the Internet. Modern libraries are increasingly being redefined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats and from many sources. They are extending services beyond the physical walls of a building, by providing material accessible by electronic means, and by providing the assistance of librarians in navigating and analyzing tremendous amounts of information with a variety of digital tools.

The overlapping of the Cowgate and the George IV Bridge is visible on these images. It creates two different levels within the library where the main entrance is on the 4th level of the building.

Amsterdam Public Library
Completion: 7 July 2007 new building Architect: Jo Coenen The Amsterdam Public Library is the central one of three large new buildings, near the Central Station. The programme consists of a library of almost 30,000 m2 (including theatre), a large cafĂŠ, and 9,000 m2 of office space. The reading and study rooms are like terraces and are placed around large and tall empty spaces. A terrace on the top floor accommodates the library theatre and conference rooms. The main shape of the building is attuned to receive enough sunlight. Design: different kind of sitting areas, on different hight and different privacy skills

Brief Central Libraries are beginning to be seen not as a temple of knowledge but as a ‘living room’ in the city offering comfort and entertainment. Taking the Central Library of Edinburgh and introducing a magazine section would give the old building a new ‘living room’. I discovered The Vaults, a hidden area under George IV Bridge and felt potential in the dark, hidden spaces to create a new journey for people to experience. Filling the vaults with old and new magazines will give a new life to the Cowgate. The deeper one goes into the space, the more the natural light disappears. Time becomes irrelevant; vintage magazines transport people into different eras. There will be a coffee shop to enjoy the magazines or books from the main library. As magazine culture changes, digital elements will be included as well. It will be a space to escape from the busy city, pass the time, and to emerge into a different world of the magazine.

Functional precedents of the brief Magazine Library Exhibition, Tokyo

Increased Magazine Sales Due to the decreased postage rates on magazines and increased literacy rapid magazine growth occurred Until the 1800s

only the upper classes read magazines. They were small soft cover books, carrying stories that appealed to a classically-educated, elite readership. The poor folk read newspapers and weekly tabloids. Magazines were expensive, partly because printing technology limited even the most popular to a run of 100,000 copies.
1821
In 1883, the Scotland-born publisher S.S. McClure dropped the price of his generalinterest McClure‘s magazine to only 15 cents. Muckraking Mclure‘s magazine starts „muckraking“ in magazines that are read by the masses 1883

I was looking for a connection between the 2 dimensional and the 3D. There are a lot of similarities in graphic design and architecture.
