GREAT PEOPLE MAKE FAVORITE PLACES BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place.

Staff Member of the Month O C TO B E R 2024 Gio Vargas Hernandez, Lead Bartender Gio’s friendly demeanor and attentiveness has created a warm atmosphere at the bar for both members and teammates. While helping to bring the creativity to our cocktail menu he encourages the team to step outside the box when it comes to their ideas. For Gio’s outstanding performance, creativity, and commitment to providing exceptional service, we are proud to have Gio as one our Lead Bartenders and are excited to recognize him as our Staff Member of the Month. We thank him for his hard work, dedication, impressive photography skills, and look forward to the future with him on our team!

Exceptional Leadership Wade Johnstone, Director of Squash Wade received this award due to his proactive approach to boosting member engagement and enhancing the qualifications of the Racquets staff. Recognizing that registration numbers for Miller Matches were low, Wade took the initiative to personally reach out to a significant number of members, inviting them to participate and fostering a sense of community within the club. He also organized a US squash certification course, ensuring that all racquet staff in his department were fully certified. This combination of personal outreach and commitment to professional development exemplifies Wade's dedication to improving the Squash Program and supporting both members and staff, making him a deserving recipient of this award.

TEACH A BCC YOUNIVERSITY CLASS March 2025 marks the fifth year of our BCC YOUniversity program, designed to enhance the personal and professional growth of our staff. BCC YOUniversity provides a range of courses aimed at helping staff develop new skills, discover their passions, and learn from fellow staff, members, and special guests. Each month, staff can select from a variety of classes to fulfill their required annual credit amount, based on their employment status. As we prepare next year’s course catalog, we are excited to introduce new and engaging class content—and we’re looking for your help to diversify the program further. Courses are grouped into Member Engagement, BCC Enrichment, and Personal Enrichment. Popular offerings have included Member

Engagement opportunities and surprise guest speaker sessions. Since the program’s inception, we’ve been fortunate to have several BCC members share their expertise by teaching courses, and we hope to continue that tradition this year. If you are connected to any local or national people of renown who would be willing to participate as a surprise guest, or if you are interested in teaching a course relating to your profession, personal interests, or hobbies, please contact me at lkourtsounis@bcc1898.com. EXPERIENCE & COLLABORATIONS

TOUR EXPERIENCE

With 16 years of experience in fitness training, I have worked with high-value clientele and have gained a wealth of knowledge through hands-on work with some of the best in the industry. I began my fitness journey while playing football at Valdosta State University (2010-2012), which gave me a deep understanding of athletic performance. I also attended Hargrave Military Academy, which instilled discipline and the importance of physical conditioning.

I have caddied for PGA Tour players, including Justin Rose, gaining valuable insights into the body’s role in golf and how to tailor fitness training for golfers. I’ve also had the privilege of caddying at renowned courses like Whistling Straits, TPC Sawgrass, and Congressional Country Club.

NOTABLE COLLABORATIONS ▶ Jillian Michaels: Worked with the fitness phenom on a TV

PHILOSOPHY I believe that wellness is not only for the body but also for the mind. It’s essential for every human to exercise as it is crucial for maintaining long-term health. Golf fitness is especially important in the modern era, with new research showing that a professional guide can help reduce injury risk and improve performance. Each golfer is unique, and their bodies move differently. This is why I use TPI's comprehensive approach to create individualized programs that cater to each player's specific needs, improving both their swing mechanics and overall fitness. For youth athletes, I emphasize the development of athletic skills rather than just technical skills. I focus on biomechanics and movement patterns to help young golfers develop a deeper understanding of their bodies, setting them up for success in golf and other sports. While my primary focus is golf, I am fully equipped to tailor exercise programs for a variety of needs and goals, helping clients improve their performance, whether they are golfers or athletes in other sports.

Recently, I was asked to join the coaches call for the Big Ten Conference, and all the coaches raved about their past experiences at Baltimore Country Club in 2017 and 2018. As we prepare for this year's Championship, Baltimore Country Club is proud to once again demonstrate why we stand as one of the top clubs in the world and why Great People Make Favorite Places.

GOLF

TIPS FROM THE PROS:

MASTER YOUR

TEMPO A SIMPLE TIP TO IMPROVE YOUR GOLF SWING By David Hutsell, Lead Instructor For those of you who are looking for ways to make your practice time more effective, I have a tip that was given to me several years ago that I still use today. Many players struggle with tempo in their golf swings. One of the best ways to work on tempo is by slowing down your swing to improve your feel and distance control. Let’s say you hit your 7 iron 150 yards on average. The next time you are on the range, instead of hitting your 7 iron to the target at 150 yards, use your 6 iron instead and keep your distance at or just less than 150 yards. Be sure to make “full swings” and focus on timing, balance, and rhythm. You may be surprised at how much your contact improves, and with improved contact comes greater accuracy and distance control. Distance and directional control are the two most important elements in getting you and your golf ball around the course. Improve both, and you will be on your way to shooting lower scores.

GROUNDS

GREENKEEPER’S UPDATE The Golf & Grounds Maintenance Team extends its heartfelt gratitude to the membership for your generous contributions to the 2024 Staff Holiday Fund. Your support not only brightened the holiday season for our staff but also brought joy and warmth to their families. Your thoughtfulness is greatly valued. With winter freezing temperatures arriving in early December, grass growth has halted, and divot recovery is no longer possible. All play on the driving range has shifted to mats until the growing season resumes next spring. To protect the turf, the range tees will be covered with a non-woven permeable tarp. These covers allow air, water, and sunlight to penetrate while functioning like a greenhouse, raising surface and soil temperatures to safeguard the grass. The West Course tees, composed primarily of warm-season grass for over a year (except the shared tee on #2 East and #7 West), require careful winter management to minimize damage and ensure optimal conditions next spring. Most tees will be covered for winter protection. However, sections of one or two tees will remain uncovered to provide playing options for golfers of varying abilities. While this will concentrate winter play on a small area, it helps preserve the majority of the teeing surfaces for next season.

Once the covers are removed in the spring, the protected areas will be ready for play, while the areas used over the winter will undergo evaluation and recovery efforts to restore them. Happy New Year!

Our new Learn-to-Play Paddle clinic has been a big success so far, attracting members that are interested in the sport but have no or minimal past experience. During the clinic, members are exposed to the most fundamental aspects of paddle in order to potentially join one of our Interclub Paddle Teams in the future, or to be able to play socially with family or friends. If you are interested in joining a Learn to Play Paddle clinic, please register via the Racquets Calendar. No prior experience is needed, and we offer demo paddles if you don’t have one. We do suggest you wear court shoes (tennis, pickleball, or squash shoes) rather than running shoes
