Budget and Work plan Badr Mesbah
Budget • The investigator should prepare his budget, this will give him an estimate of the cost , consequently the feasibility of the research will be determined
Budget
• List the major elements and then each element has to be itemized in details
Budget a. Staff: i. technical ii. administrative iii. support
b. Equipment: i. available: a. actual b. potential ii. needed
c. Supplies: i. stationeries ii. lab
Budget d. Transportation: i. purchase ii. rent iii. fuel iv. air-tickets e. Maintenance f. Miscellaneous g. Overhead
Budget • Do not over or under – estimate the actual expenses • A range of ± 10% is usually acceptable. • If the project is long-term, he must allow for the rate of inflation (The budget in this case is divided in years )
Workplan • Before embarking on your study, you must have a clear idea about the duration of the study • You can design a crude workplan early during protocol development • the plan cannot be finalized before doing a pilot study which aims at pre-testing all the elements of the research.
Workplan • a. Aims: • i. to assess the feasibility of the study • ii. to enable local authorities and/or funding agencies to make an informed decision about the study • iii. to help in monitoring the progress of the work.
Workplan • b. Time: • i. early crude plan • ii. final plan after pilot
Workplan • c. Method: • i. listing all the activities related to the study • (a) Planning phase: – 1) protocol development 2) literature review – 3) official clearance 4) publicity – 5) design of tools 6) pilot testing
Workplan • (b) Implementation: 1) census 2) sampling 3) data collection, including lab work 4) coding 5) data entry 6) data cleaning 7) data analysis
Workplan • (c) Results: 1) report writing 2) dissemination of results
Workplan • ii. Identification of responsibility for each activity. • iii. Setting time and date for achievement of each activity. • iv. Putting all these elements together in a legible form which could be a chart or a table
