About Memoria

“Memoria has a mission to provide exceptional standards of service, facility and products to the bereaved families that use its funeral directing services, crematoria, cemeteries gardens of remembrance, financial & legal services or online retail store. This is because it is not only commercially sensible to do so but also because it is an essential act of human decency towards people who have just lost a much loved member of their family or friend. Bereavement is the price we must all pay for the joy of loving and being loved. The loss of a loved one is the most stressful, unhappy and traumatic experience that we will face in life. We at Memoria realise that we are unable to eradicate such pain but we also know it is our responsibility and duty to be as efficient, kind, respectful and polite as humanly possible to our clients at their time of grief, and thereafter when they need to conclude estate matters for their cherished relatives or friends. Therefore it is our aim to provide immaculately clean and tidy facilities in tranquil and beautiful surroundings attended by people who are sincerely dedicated to our mission, and who take a great pride in their work as a result.”

Media Systems

Music has always played an important part at funeral services, perhaps more so today than ever. It is used, not just to accompany hymns, but to also personalise a service in celebration of a loved one’s life by the playing of songs or music that are associated with him or her evoking fond memories, as well as marking the love felt for them to those attending their service.

Memoria has augmented tradition with technology by offering a state of the art media system, which provides:

• An almost infinite music library

• Large screen television. This gives an opportunity for video/audio playback and a recording facility to either be used for the showing of lifetime photographs or the pre-recording of a eulogy

• A live web-cast which enables those unable to attend in person due to distance or illness to watch the service live no matter where they are in the world

Therefore, not only can a traditional hymn be professionally played on a digital piano/organ, with or without a choir, but also other music can be selected and performed by the preferred artist through our high quality Bose sound system. In addition to the current music, visual and audio system, Memoria Ltd have become the first crematoria group to offer a free of charge projected image of the family’s choice above the catafalque. This is further complemented by a unique chapel mood lighting system which includes a range of colours to enhance the personalisation of the service.

An audio recording of the service can be made and supplied either on disc or USB, extra copies may be ordered if desired.

James Penney Chairman

James’ early career was in academia, including undergraduate and postgraduate research at Trinity College, Cambridge, followed by six years as Principal Lecturer at Westminster College, Oxford.

Until 2013, he was the owner and Managing Director of Darwin Consulting, a strategy consulting firm he cofounded in 1998. Darwin provided strategic advice to directors and investors in a range of industries, including financial services, private equity and media. From 2007 to 2014, James was also Vice-Chairman of MAXBANK, a retail bank specialising in micro-credit and SME finance in the Philippines.

Howard Hodgson MBIFD (Dip) Ass. RSH Chief Executive Officer

A fourth generation funeral director, taking over the family business in 1975, Howard launched an expansion programme that culminated in the flotation of Hodgson Holdings plc in 1986. The company subsequently merged with Kenyons in 1989 and then with Great Southern Group to form the largest funeral/crematorium group in the UK. Howard sold his interests in 1991, having taken the company from one branch to 546. Memoria was founded by Howard in 2003 and he has since grown the company into a group who own their own network of crematoria and memorial parks across the UK. The group also has a national Funeral Division and Financial & Legal Services Division and has developed a successful online funeral retail store.

Jamieson Hodgson Deputy CEO, Head of Planning, HR & Operational Performance (Memoria Group)

Jamieson joined Memoria in early 2009. He has helped to grow the business by leading our planning team to securing 13 new planning consents for new crematoria and memorial parks in the last 11 years. This has allowed him to develop knowledge in planning law and policy. He is a demographic expert who has helped to develop GIS technology in order to better understand the way that ‘need’ and financial viability is measured in crematoria development. Jamieson also heads up HR and Operational Performance which covers recruitment of staff, market-share performance, ongoing demographic assessment and facility service standards. He has also managed the group response to the CMA market investigation.
