SPOTLIGHT AT MEMORIAL PARK MEMORIAL

his is an exciting and historic moment in time for Memorial Park. With City Council’s approval of the Memorial Park Long Range Master Plan, we look forward to bringing you and future generations an even better Memorial Park. Memorial Park is over 1,500 acres for the entire city to enjoy and is a place for everyone – from running to biking, recreational sports to wilderness trails, and beyond. As we look towards the realized Master Plan and what that means for your Memorial Park, you will be pleased to know that all of these offerings are here to stay. The entire master planning process has been a collaborative effort jointly led by the Memorial Park Conservancy, City of Houston, Houston Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD) and the Uptown Houston Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ). Nelson Byrd Woltz (www.nbwla.com), the lead landscape architectural design firm was selected for this project due to their focus on balancing ecological considerations with user needs, success with similar large-scale park efforts, experience with public-private partnerships, and the fact that they listen – to input, to history and to the stories that the Park has told and will reveal. Extensive studies on ecology, history, demographic trends, and other topics as well as a robust public input process underpin the plan. Since September 2013, 1,200 participants joined eight public meetings, over 1,800 participants participated in an online survey about the Park, and

hundreds of park users participated in twenty focused workshops. A recent survey revealed that users of the Park hail from more than 134 different zip codes. Reconnection, consolidation, restoration, enhancement and responsible management are the guiding principles that have shaped the Master Plan. The plan seeks to help restore a resilient ecology for the Park that can withstand disruptions like hurricanes and droughts, improve key amenities like trails and ball fields, create greater access to parts of the Park currently inaccessible to most people, prepare the Park for connections to other parks, improve Park safety, address key infrastructure needs, capture storm water for reuse inside the park for irrigation and firefighting, and reveal and celebrate the Park’s cultural history such as Camp Logan. The complete overview of this visionary and comprehensive plan is available online. We are thrilled to deliver such a thorough and dynamic plan that Memorial Park, the “crown jewel” of Houston, deserves.

feeling of being in nature when I’m in the Park. There are so few places in the city that give me that feeling.

Why did you select Memorial Park for your volunteer time?

I didn’t realize how much volunteers help with the upkeep of the Park until I started volunteering. I began to feel responsible for certain areas of the Park where I volunteered and I liked knowing that my work kept the Park looking nice for all users. What is your favorite memory from Memorial Park? I always

like volunteering at the 4 the Park Brunch Run because of the energy and excitement around the event. Plus the awesome food! I also have great memories of eating lunch at Beck’s Prime with other volunteers and staff after a volunteer project is over. I’ve made some great friends through volunteering at the Park.

Allan Reyes

llan is studying Mechanical Engineering at the Houston campus of the University of TexasTyler. A native Houstonian, Allan began visiting Memorial Park as a child. He grew up on the southside mountain bike trails and running around the Seymour Lieberman Trail. Three years ago, Allan became involved in Memorial Park Conservancy and has become an important part of the volunteer program. He has volunteered for everything from invasive species removal to our annual Green Gala. You may see him out explaining how to prune a tree to a middle school class or getting dirty himself by picking up trash along Memorial Drive. Allan hopes to continue his volunteer service to Memorial Park after graduating from school and we hope to keep him too!

The night was not only an historic and exciting moment for Memorial Park but also for the Houston community. Less than two weeks later the plan went before the Quality of Life Committee and passed victoriously. Six days later the proposed Master Plan passed unanimously at City Council. Memorial Park Conservancy Executive Director Shellye Arnold stated, “We are thrilled to be presenting a visionary Master Plan for one of the country’s most important greenspaces.”

ecently, Memorial Park Conservancy Conservation Director Nicholas Butler supervised a team that removed invasive plant species from more than 500 acres of park land. Butler explained that the term “invasive plant” has broadened over the years. He stated, “The technical definition is a plant that is not native to a specific location; and has a tendency to spread, which is believed to cause damage to the environment, human economy and/or human health. Nowadays an invasive sometimes includes native plants as well.” Butler continued, “A more practical working definition would be that an invasive plant species is any plant species with the tendency to overpopulate an ecosystem or crowd and threaten biodiversity.” Invasive plants often

choke out healthy species, causing a weak ecosystem, particularly vulnerable to natural disasters such as droughts. In short, the urban wilderness of Memorial Park cannot thrive with these aggressive species. The treatment team worked systematically through the Park and covered 500 acres in just three weeks. The Conservancy will continue invasive plant treatment to restore the Park to its healthy native roots.

rban Wild, Memorial Park Conservancy’s young professional’s group has launched! Young professionals from all over Houston joined together at Camerata on March 26th to celebrate the group’s debut. We invite you and your friends to join other community-driven Houstonians as we help restore, preserve and enhance Memorial Park for generations to come. This is membership with a mission, and is open to ages 21 and up interested in building a deeper relationship with Memorial Park. The next Urban Wild happy hour will be at Beckrew on May 5th and you do not want to miss out! This is a great opportunity to meet other young professionals who are interested in making a difference in Houston through service and stewardship opportunities throughout the year as well as its inaugural Bridge Bash on November 12. pproximately 400 guests lassoed their hearts for the Park at the Conservancy’s annual Green Gala, this year honoring the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Guests wore their finest boots and bolos in anticipation for the upcoming rodeo season. The event was graciously chaired by Tammy Jenkins and Camille Patton who worked tirelessly to make the event a wildly successful and fun night. For the first year ever, the event was held in the Park at the Running Trails Center. Guests dined on delights from City Kitchen, including such delectables as South Texas bob hite quail with an ancho chili glaze and a pear and cranberry crisp with bourbon gelato. Throughout the night attendees listened to the tunes of folk band Wood & Wire. During dinner the Crestwood Garden Club was awarded the 2015 Ima Hogg Service Award. Later, attendees put their “Paddles Up for the Park”, raising their paddle in support of the projects and programs of Memorial Park Conservancy. More than $380,000

Brunch in the Park!

n April 4th more than 2,000 people ran, walked and brunched in this year’s 4 the Park Brunch Run through the Park. Memorial Park Conservancy, with support from the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, City of Houston and Luke’s Locker, hosted a 4-mile run and 1K kid’s race through Memorial Park. The event, chaired by David Doherty, was presented by Raymond James & Associates. The Silver Eagle/Michelob Ultra post-race party featured local band The Slags, tasty treats at a vast array food booths and children’s activities. The event celebrated the foodie in all of us and raised more than $100,000 for the Park. The Bank of

SLT Spotlight

he Seymour Lieberman Exer-Trail, affectionately known as the SLT, sees thousands of users every day. Some even consider it the home of recreational running in Houston. Due to heavy use and rain water erosion, the surface of the trail has deteriorated over time. Recently, the Seymour Lieberman Trail Refurbishment project began to refurbish the trail with new surfacing to provide an improved and safer running experience. The project is undertaken in partnership with the City of Houston, Houston Parks and Recreation Department and the Uptown Houston Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone #16. Soon after starting, the first phase of the SLT Refurbishment Project at West Memorial Loop was completed and the remaining refurbishment work will progress

in 2,000-foot sections. Within each section, the contractor smoothes out the subgrade and adds four inches of compacted decomposed granite to the pre-existing trail. Once completed, the trail will span sixteen feet wide with tapered edges to the preexisting grade. The project will also replace drainage pipes and include a new layer of decomposed granite to cover them. Please continue to respect the contractor’s work and use the available detours on the Outer Loop Trail and the portions of the SLT that are not undergoing refurbishment. The next section to be completed is the Tennis Center area which will be followed by the section in front of the golf course.
