WHAT ARE THE DEGREE OPTIONS? DOCTOR OF MEDICINE – A postgraduate program that requires the completion of four years of study. Upon completion of the degree, students will be matched to a residency training program. The following residency training programs are available at Memorial: • Family medicine • Anatomical pathology • Neurology • Anesthesia • Obstetrics and gynecology • Diagnostic radiology • Orthopedic surgery • General surgery • Pediatrics • Internal medicine • Psychiatry • Nephrology
HOW DO I BECOME A MEDICAL STUDENT? Students intending to complete the doctor of medicine program are required to complete a bachelor’s degree, six credit hours in English and the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). The undergraduate degree can be in any discipline. All applicants for admission to doctor of medicine are screened by an admissions committee that considers academic performance, scores on the MCAT, reference, interviews (in some cases), extra-curricular activities, volunteer and/or work experience and any other relevant information. Admission to the program is competitive for a limited number of placements (80 placements in total). Most placements are reserved for bona fide residents of Newfoundland and Labrador (60 placements including three placements for Aboriginal applicants) plus some reserved specifically for residents of Prince Edward Island (four placements), New Brunswick (10 placements) and Yukon (one placement). The remaining five seats are open to other national and international students.
The Health Sciences Library collection includes material on medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry and allied health. In the health and allied disciplines, students can easily access many books (paper format), electronic texts, electronic journals, current journals (paper format), and audiovisual materials. Health Science Information and Media Service (HSIMS) is a support department that provides IT, instructional design, audio visual, and state-of-the-art graphic and media support. Students have access to knowledgeable and helpful staff that are familiar with the latest technology trends.
FAST FACTS The Faculty of Medicine recently moved into a brand new Medical Education Centre, which includes a state-of-the-art Clinical Learning and Simulation Centre, lecture theatres, standardized patient exam rooms, educational support units and laboratory research space. The medical education program is fully accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS). Thus, the medical school is equivalent in every respect to other medical schools in Canada. Approved teaching programs for residents are under the direction of the medical school.
