CAREERS/PRACTICE SETTINGS The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree program prepares graduates to be counsellors, advocates, community developers and policy makers. Some areas of practice include: • Child and family services • Gerontology • Primary healthcare and long-term care • Mental health and addiction services • Community settings
WHAT ARE THE DEGREE OPTIONS? BACHELOR OF SOCIAL WORK • Memorial’s BSW program is offered as a first and second degree • Admission to the BSW program is competitive with 60 seats for first degree and 15 seats for second degree • Application deadline date is March 1 for both programs • Through a combination of in-class course work and two field practica within Newfoundland and Labrador, the BSW programs emphasize social justice through hands-on learning • Students gain experience in assessment, interviewing, counselling, advocacy and community capacity building through experiential activities including interactive class discussions, role plays and individual and group presentations
HOW DO I BECOME A SOCIAL WORK STUDENT? The BSW is not a direct entry program. Applicants to the program must complete the academic requirements before applying to the BSW program. Students who are eligible for admission to the BSW program(s) will be ranked based on academic performance, work/ volunteer/community involvement experience in human services, letters of appraisals, self-appraisal, and a personal statement. Students may be able to complete the prerequisite courses via online learning through Memorial.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS 30 credit hours: • Six credit hours in English • Psychology 1000 and 1001 • Sociology 1000
Bachelor’s degree recognized by Memorial + 30 credit hours: • Social Work 1710 • Six credit hours in English
• Social Work 1710 •1 2 credit hours in non-social work courses (6 credit hours must be from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences or Faculty of Science) •A minimum grade of 65% in all prerequisite courses • A minimum average of 65% in the courses comprising the last 30 credit hours of undergraduate study attempted
• Psychology 2010 and 2011 • Six credit hours in Sociology (three of which must be at 2000 level or above) • Nine credit hours at the 2000 level or above from selected areas • A minimum grade of 70% in all prerequisite courses • A minimum average of 70% in the last 60 credit hours of undergraduate study attempted
NON-ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS •A minimum of 60 hours of verified, formal work/ volunteer/community experience in human services
• A minimum of 300 hours of verified, formal work/ volunteer/community experience in human services
