hen I was in junior high school, my father began adding on to our house. For the foundation he dug a lot of trenches in the ground, built wood forms to pour the cement in, and hired a cement truck to fill them up. I remember thinking that it seemed like a lot of trouble to take for something that would eventually be covered over and never seen again. If my father had been impatient and not known better, he might have been tempted to cut corners on the foundation and spend that time and money on the parts of the house that we would actually see and use. Education is a little like this. Basic skills instruction is one of the two essential components of any education program for primary and early elementary grades (along with classic children's literature). Later on the focus will turn to the liberal arts and the great books, but in order to do that, students must know reading, writing, and arithmetic—the fundamental skills of decoding words, writing letters and then words legibly, and mastering mathematical calculation. Traditional educators have always believed that there is a distinction between the order of knowledge and the order of learning. The order of knowledge begins at the top. The order of learning begins at the bottom, with the simplest things which must be mastered first, before trying to attain the more sophisticated things at the top. The simplest things come first. My father's work on the foundation of our house involved a lot of patience, hard work, and precision, virtues that come in handy in our classrooms as well. In reading, we have students memorize letter-sound correspondences, a few basic phonics rules, and how to carefully trace letters. In math this involves

2

Letter from the Editor

learning to count, practicing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division through sometimes tedious practice and memorization—things that are unimportant in themselves, but necessary to master in order to later be able to read for understanding and to negotiate advanced mathematics. These are basic skills that eventually get covered over and put out of sight. Our students must learn them, not in order to think about them, but so that they don't have to think about them. But they will be there, underneath and out of sight, supporting the entire structure of their learning. This is not a very popular view today. For the educational progressives who dominate our educational establishment, whose psychological emphasis is on "child-centered" learning, these traditional practices seem unnecessary. They are Romantics who spurn memorization, drill, and practice because they consider them "lowerorder" skills which can be bypassed in favor of "higher-order" skills. They don't believe in the order of learning; they believe only in the order of knowledge. They are impatient. They think you can begin education at the top. Newer methods like whole-word reading instruction and methods of teaching math that emphasize concepts over mastery hold out the promise of fun in the classroom and quick advancement. Progressives see no reason they can't build their infrastructure of learning by bypassing the foundation and beginning with the roof first. But the foundation is as important in education as it is in anything else.

What makes our program classical and Christian? The Classical Core Curriculum teaches the traditional language and math skills of the liberal arts and familiarizes your student with the culture of the Christian West through the reading of classic history and literature. This Latincentered program is the same classical Christian education that American schools used until about the 1920s.

Is it easy to customize my Classical Core Curriculum package? Of course! We make it easy for you to tailor our program so that your student can be at the right place in each subject, even if he or she is starting the program as an older student.

I'm switching from another program. Can I expect a smooth transition? Memoria Press' curriculum is comprehensive and easy to teach. Switching to an easier-to-teach program is never hard.

Will this program help my student in today's world? Classical education teaches students how to think and what to do. It is an education in wisdom and virtue. The mental and character training of classical education will better prepare your student for whatever he or she decides to do in life.

Classical Core Curriculum PRESCHOOL

With simple daily lesson plans, answer keys, and teacher manuals, our program enables you to give your student a classical education. Our programs have been specifically written with the home and private school teacher in mind, so you can teach any subject, even if you don't know it yourself.

How do I know my student is getting a quality, well-rounded education? We emphasize the mastery of the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic in the early grades as a necessary foundation for later, more advanced study. With this solid foundation, your student can then tackle grammar and higher arithmetic in the middle grades, and more advanced study in language, mathematics, science, history, and literature in high school as a preparation for college.

temPus Fugit

Time f lies—right out your classroom window by Paul Schaeffer

I

n today’s materialistic society, the thing we all seem to want more of is immaterial: time. Homeschool parents struggle to teach multiple children in different grades. Classroom teachers have up to 25 or 30 students in a single grade (15 as a maximum if they are lucky), and their time in the classroom is diminished with music classes, art classes, P.E., and more. The main question teachers and parents have when they are faced with implementing Latin is “Where am I going to find the time?” Many people are convinced that Latin would be a worthwhile educational endeavor, “but we just don’t have time!” Notice the word worthwhile. We have already answered the question if Latin is worth your while. T H e r e a L i T Y OF C L a SS T i m e When we say that we don’t have time for Latin, we are saying that we think our time is best spent elsewhere. Let’s hypothesize that at a given school they have class 5 days a week from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. That is 7 hours a day, 35 hours a week. If we give 30 minutes for lunch and an average of 20 minutes a day between P.E. and recess, we end up with 30 hours and 50 minutes left for the week. That means just over 6 hours of instructional time a day. If Latin really is the core of a classical language arts program (which it should be), if it really does teach vocabulary, grammar, and intense analytical thought (which it does), is it not worth one measly sixth of your educational week? Dedicating an hour a day to Latin still gives you time to dedicate 15 minutes to recitation, an hour to literature, an hour to math, and 45 minutes to grammar, spelling, and composition combined.

16

Tempus Fugit

This still leaves 10 hours of time a week, ample time for Christian Studies, Classical Studies, American/ Modern Studies, Science, and Music/Art. The time we dedicate to a specific endeavor generally reflects the priority we give it. If a man were to spend an hour watching television by himself each day and only 30 minutes playing with his children, an outside observer would say that his favorite television shows are more important to him than his kids are. And that observer would be correct. Spending five hours a week on math and five hours a week on Latin communicates to the world and our children that the mastery of language is as valuable to us as the mastery of calculation and quantification— which is as it should be. These are the two sides of the liberal arts, and both are important. We do not often think about what our actions are saying to those around us. But as the familiar trope goes, “Actions speak louder than words.” T r a NSi T iON i NG TO L aT i N When a parent or school decides to start teaching Latin and it hasn’t been a course of study before, a long dissertation about priorities will not normally resolve the scheduling problem. Regardless of how many subjects are being taught, the school day is always filled up with lessons, activities, and enrichment. Eking out 5 hours a week in this situation is a daunting task. Every teacher’s jaw drops when they are asked to find an hour a day! A myriad of solutions is always proposed: lengthen the school day, cut back on this or that subject, make it an afterschool option, or scrap fine arts. And no one really likes any of these solutions.

First Form's grammar-based approach is perfect for the grammar stage student. it is also the best approach for any age because every student is in the grammar stage when he begins a subject. The syntax knowledge required in translationbased programs is a logic or rhetoric stage skill, which can easily overwhelm a beginning student unless he has first learned the grammar at a slow and gentle pace and is taught for mastery. Based on 20 years of teaching experience, the Forms series, beginning with First Form, has been used sucessfully by countless home and private schools because it helps the student make sense of what many consider a difficult subject. First Form is the ideal text for all beginners, grades 5 and up, or is a great follow-up to Latina Christiana I.

"I cannot tell you how amazing this program looks! My oldest son and I are currently in Second Form Latin and I can already see that what we've learned through MP and the Forms Latin series is going to make Greek a treat." - Jessica P.

First Form Greek Introduction to Ancient Greek, Year I by Cheryl Lowe & Michael Simpson Based on the revolutionary First Form Latin series, First Form Greek is written for parents and teachers with or without a Greek background. Its goal is to present the grammar so logically and so systematically that anyone can learn it. At the same time, we have adapted the Latin Forms series to account for the difference between Greek and Latin, such as the new alphabet, overlapping sounds, more variation within paradigms, and less regularity. First Form Greek overcomes these challenges with the addition of weekly vocabulary reviews, more frequent recitation, and an “expanded” dictionary entry for Greek verbs.

✓✓Six indicative active tenses of the omega verb ✓✓Present tense of the to be verb ✓✓Two noun declensions ✓✓First & second declension adjectives ✓✓Personal & demonstrative pronouns ✓✓Approximately 130 vocabulary words

The Five Principles of Effective Communication

R

hetoric. To most modern minds the word smacks of cunning—the empty polemic or self-aggrandizement of a political figure, or perhaps the crafty prose of a present-day sophist selling overpriced or unnecessary products to the unlearned. To those who have delved a bit into classical education, rhetoric is the third liberal art, the top of the trivium, the noble art of persuasion, a skill in the tradition of Plato and Paul, Cicero and Augustine, which since ancient times has been practiced and applied for noble (as well as ignoble) purposes. For those of us who are rashly attempting to recapture the liberal arts tradition and teach what we never learned, the idea of rhetoric can be frightening—especially if one opens up Aristotle’s book on the subject. In her seminal paper, "The Lost Tools of Learning," delivered at Oxford in 1947, Dorothy Sayers contemplates the tragic loss of the teaching of the trivium, and goes on to note that the disciplines of grammar, logic, and rhetoric may correspond to the natural stages of child development, which she labels "poll-parrot, pert, and poetic." Her argument makes sense; when children are young, they can memorize easily ("poll-parrot"), so give them lots of memorization, even including Latin grammar paradigms; when children are a bit older and inevitably begin to argue ("pert"), teach them logic so they can argue well; and when teenage students have enough knowledge and skill, they will wax creative

26

The 5 Canons of Rhetoric

("poetic"), so we should cultivate eloquence—how to recognize and understand beautiful language as well as how to write and speak skillfully. We must, however, be careful not to adhere too strictly to this "stages of development" approach, lest analytical grammar become a bane to the elementary school student, logic without meaningful application become a tedious exercise to the middle school student, rhetoric become the exclusive domain of the high school student. In my experience, the skills of the trivium can be learned and refined throughout one’s life and in parallel. I learn more grammar every week teaching Latin; I continue to study and understand more about logic and its applications, and I seem to be constantly reading and writing, teaching and persuading, honing my modicum of rhetorical skill. I am in all stages all the time. Additionally, by holding to the Sayers stages model, we may somehow think that we should delay teaching rhetoric to students until they are older. But we can begin teaching the fundamentals of rhetoric at an early age, and thus we see coming to the rescue the Five Canons of rhetoric. The word "canon" is most commonly used in music to describe a piece in which a melody is introduced in different parts successively, or in an expression like "the canon of literature": a collection of books which comprise a set such as Scripture or the Great Books. A simpler definition is "a general rule, law, or principle." The Five Canons of Rhetoric give us five general principles, or divisions, which, when we come

Online Class (p. 31) Whether you want a follow-on course to Memoria Press’ popular Traditional Logic program, or simply an introduction to logic for high school students at a little more advanced level, this program is a valuable tool in teaching your student how to think.

Classical Rhetoric with Aristotle is a guided tour through the first part of the greatest single book on communication ever written: Aristotle’s Rhetoric. With questions that will help the student unlock every important aspect of the book, along with fill-in-the-blank charts and analyses of great speeches, this companion text to Aristotle’s great work will send the student on a voyage of discovery from which he will return with a competent knowledge of the basic classical principles of speech and writing.

The Ancient Art of Thinking • The ten ways something can exist • Five ways to say something about something else • The four definitional questions • Three questions to ask when analyzing an idea • Definition & classification

This is more than just a course in English or public speaking. It involves a study of the fundamental principles of political philosophy, ethics, and traditional psychology. A student learns not only the elements of a political speech, but also the elements of good character; not only how to give a legal speech, but also the seven reasons people act; not only how to give a ceremonial speech, but what elicits specific emotions under particular circumstances and why.

Case Studies in Logic • "What is a Heresy?" by Hillaire Belloc • "The Nature of Philosophy," by Vincent McNabb • "The Function of the Wise Man," by Thomas Aquinas • "Idols of the Mind," by Sir Francis Bacon

Practical Thinking Skills • How to mark a book or article • "How to Define" worksheet • "How to Classify" worksheet

An Introduction to First Philosophy Material Logic is not only a textbook on critical thinking skills, but an introduction to the basic rudiments of classical philosophy. Most of the book's content is derived from the metaphysical works of one of history's greatest thinkers: Aristotle.

• Sample weekly plan • Clear explanation of lesson components • Easy-to-read layout • Reading questions • Figures of speech • Evaluative & analysis questions • How to Read a Book questions • Case studies from Homer, Plato, Shakespeare, Lincoln, Marc Antony, and more

I

n the Summer 2014 Classical Teacher, I wrote an extensive article exploring the question, “What is the Classical Approach to Phonics?” The contention of that article was that there are two basic approaches to phonics in the classical education world: the traditional method and the Spalding method. The Spalding method is based on the book, The Writing Road to Reading (WRTR), written in 1957 by Romalda Spalding. Because the original 300-page manual is quite difficult, there have been a number of spin-offs that have sought to make the WRTR method more accessible. My original article1 also included a detailed comparison of the two methods. Though I left the title question unanswered, my goal in the original article was to give a thorough, fair, and accurate description of the two approaches. Many readers made up their own minds, I’m sure, but many also called and wanted our answer. In this article I will review the two approaches and critique the Spalding method in terms of the principles of traditional and classical education. For the Spalding method I will use the 1990 edition of WRTR as I did in the previous article. For the traditional method I will use A Guide to Teaching Phonics by June Lyday Orton. There are many other traditional programs I could have chosen, but the Orton Guide is well organized, simple, and has great credibility due to the pioneering work in phonics of Dr. Orton. Moreover, I want to emphasize that Orton is in every respect a traditional method, despite the common belief that Orton and Spalding are very similar. 1

36

The Traditional (Orton) Method Traditional phonics begins with the alphabet and one sound for each letter, which are then blended together to sound out words. In Lesson 1, Orton teaches the sound of short a and five consonants, which are then used to practice blending sounds into words. Lesson 1 includes three sentences with words such as fat, Sam, mat, bat, sat, made with three “sight” words, I, on, had. This method needs little explanation to those familiar with traditional phonics.

The Spalding (WRTR) Method The Spalding method is quite complex, so I have summarized it in five steps: 1. Students (first grade) learn the sounds of 54 of the 70 phonograms in about 3-4 weeks. 2. Students analyze, mark, and spell in their spelling notebooks the most common 150 words in the English language, at a rate of 30 words per week. This is begun after Step 1, and requires about 5 more weeks. 3. When Steps 1 and 2 have been taught, students begin to read on "November 1." 4. After reading begins, the remaining 16 phonograms are taught and students continue to analyze, mark, and spell words in their spelling notebooks for a total of 780 words by April of first grade. 5. Students are tested weekly to measure spelling, using the Morrison-McCall spelling tests, and reading, using the McCall Crabbs reading comprehension tests.

In Step 1 above, the 54 phonograms are the 26 letters of the alphabet plus er, ir, ur, wor, wr, sh, ee, th, ay, ai, ow, ou, oi, oy, aw, au, ew, ui, oo, ch, ng, ea, ar, ck, ed, or, wh, oa. Of these 54 phonograms, six (g, c, s, e, i, ow) have two sounds, six (a, o, u, ch, ea, oo) have three sounds, and one (ou) has four sounds. The plan of the Spalding method is to teach in isolation the above 54 phonograms and their 45 sounds from flashcards and dictation. There are only forty-five sounds and seventy phonograms for writing them. Begin at once to teach the class to say all the sounds and to write the first fifty-four phonograms. Firstgraders require three weeks, fifteen days, for this if only four new phonograms are taught each day. Schedule three hours each day‌ (WRTR, p. 124) Knowledge of these phonograms is tested by having the teacher dictate the sound or sounds of each phonogram (without the children seeing the phonogram card) and having them write the phonogram. (WRTR, p. 125) In Step 2 above, the spelling notebook has two parts. The part which begins in the first grade consists of an analysis of spelling words taught in order of frequency of use in the English language. For instance the first five words are me, do, and, go, at. The words are analyzed using a) phonograms, b) 29 spelling rules, and c) the Spalding marking system summarized in the sidebar at the right. By October 1 first-graders should begin writing the (spelling) words in Sections A-H. Teach them at least thirty words a week so that by November 1, they reach Section I, when they will begin to read aloud from their first book. Schedule a daily reading lesson at this time. (WRTR, p. 125) In two weeks the beginner will have gotten to Section H and each child can begin writing his own sentences. Two or three sentences a day are sufficient for first grade. (WRTR, p. 123) 332 words are now in the spelling notebooks, taking the first grade a total of eleven weeks to the middle of December if only thirty words a week were presented. (WRTR, p.158) Continue teaching thirty or more words a week so that 780 words to Section O are taught in the twenty-four weeks before mid-April. (WRTR, p. 125)

C r i t iqu e of t h e Spaldi ng M e t hod Spelling Before Reading? It should be clear from the five steps of the Spalding method that it is radically different from traditional phonics. The first problem with the Spalding method is that it puts spelling before reading and argues that spelling is a necessary basis for reading. The failings of most of the phonic methods may be summarized in that they neglect spelling and do not teach the saying and writing of the forty-five basic sounds of the language before trying to read. (WRTR, p.27) This is a curious idea which I have never seen anywhere else and is, in fact, inconsistent with the definition of phonics. Phonics is the teaching of lettersound correspondence for the purpose of learning to read. Reading requires the skill of decoding— recognition of phonograms for reading and sounding out unfamiliar words. Spelling is encoding, a much more difficult skill that lags far behind reading. All readers, beginning as well as advanced, are able to read far beyond their ability to spell. To require spelling as a prerequisite to reading is getting the cart before the horse. We wouldn't ask a

Spalding Marking System In the spelling notebook, students write spelling rules as they occur in the study of their spelling words. 1. For the five vowels, a, e, i, o, u, no mark for short vowels, underlining for long vowels, a number for other sounds. 2. For all other phonograms, all 2+ letter phonograms are underlined. For phonograms that have more than one sound, mark with a superscript the sound number on the back of the phonogram card, for any sound except the first. If the sound is not one on the phonogram cards, it is underlined twice. 3. There are five jobs for silent e which are marked by subscript numbers. Here are six examples of marked first grade words:

child to walk before he could crawl, or run before he could walk. It is typical of modern education theory to confuse the order of knowledge with the order of learning—to focus on the advanced skill and neglect the basic skill. Spelling lags far behind reading and, while it strengthens reading, should not limit or impede the goal of fluent reading. Once students start to read real books as opposed to phonetic readers, phonics and spelling are intertwined and continue to reinforce each other throughout the elementary years.

Traditional phonics is incremental; each new skill is taught after the previous one has been thoroughly practiced. For instance, after the short vowels, the student learns the long vowel sounds and silent e rule. Next he may practice consonant blends, and then learn some of the long vowel teams, such as ai, oa, ay, one or two at a time, all of which he practices not in isolation but in word families. No frontloading, just step-by-step learning.

Frontloading

Spalding is rigorous phonics, but it is not systematic phonics. WRTR teaches 54 phonograms all at once. This is definitely rigorous, but it is not orderly. Order implies a hierarchy, categories, a selection, a plan. Drinking from a fire hose is not a plan. Learning 54 phonograms in isolation is overwhelming and lacking in structure, but Mrs. Spalding then compounds her error by teaching students to apply the phonograms in a completely random order, the order found in the 150 most common and irregular words in the English language. Traditional phonics teaches phonograms in a logical order, beginning with one sound for each letter and proceeding from the most common and most regular patterns to those that are less common and less regular, each pattern applied immediately in word families. This order has been worked out over time by teachers and linguists, and though it may vary in some details, it is a thing of beauty. This order is completely obscured in WRTR. I cannot see how either the teacher or student could develop any understanding of the underlying order of the English language—or how to teach it—from WRTR.

WRTR requires students to learn 54 phonograms in isolation and the spelling and analysis of 150 words before beginning to read. Why all of this frontloading? In what other subject would we frontload skills and knowledge and then ask the beginner to navigate his way through a surplus of information in order to select and use what he needs? Do we teach algebra this way? Piano? Soccer? All good teaching involves incremental lessons—small steps that give bite-size skills. This frontloading is the fundamental flaw of WRTR. It is an egregious error. Let me illustrate the process of reading for the WRTR child when he sees the word cat, a word not found among the first 150 words in his spelling notebook. The WRTR child must analyze cat, using three sounds of the phonogram a, and two sounds of the phonogram c, and whatever spelling rules he has learned that may apply to this word. I have personally seen WRTR students struggle to read many words as simple as cat, while at the same time capable of rattling off a bewildering array of rules and phonograms and sounds. Incredibly, Mrs. Spalding does not include in her 29 Spelling Rules the very rule that the WRTR child needs to read the word cat. It is an extraordinary oversight that she missed the most consistent and basic phonics rule in the English language, “the vowel in a CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) word is short.” This is the phonics pattern that all traditional phonics programs begin with, but it is not mentioned by Mrs. Spalding. By contrast, how does the traditional phonics student learn to read the word cat? Since he has only learned one sound for each letter, the only skill required of him is to remember those sounds and practice blending them together. Learning this one basic pattern, which applies to words with initial and final consonant blends and many multi-syllable words, enables the child to read thousands of new words.

How to Teach Phonics

Lack of Order

Conclusion Spalding has no relation to traditional or classical phonics. Spalding is rigorous phonics, but it is not systematic phonics; it is not incremental phonics, and it is not common sense phonics. The task of remembering the 70 phonograms, many with multiple and overlapping sounds, taught in isolation with no aid to memory provided by actual words, pictures, or word families, and concurrently remembering 29 awkwardly worded and abstract spelling rules as a basis for reading is a remarkably obtuse and unnatural method—it is easy to mistake this confusion with complexity. There have been many who have worked hard to rewrite WRTR, to make it more user-friendly and provide the details and materials needed to implement

www.MemoriaPress.com

it; they are to be commended. From what I have seen, most of them have improved WRTR and corrected some of its most egregious faults. But it is time to recognize that WRTR is fundamentally flawed and reject it as unsound, putting our efforts instead into developing sound phonics and reading programs based on traditional methods that work. I would also submit that its use by the classical education movement is unfortunate and undermines the credibility of our movement. But the question remains: What is the appeal of WRTR and why has it persisted so long? I think there are two reasons. 1. With its 70 phonograms, 29 spelling rules, and marking system, WRTR appears to be comprehensive and rigorous. We classical educators are serious, and this is appealing to us. But increasing complexity and confusion is not evidence of rigor. It is evidence of poor teaching. 2. With its 70 phonograms, 29 spelling rules, and marking system, WRTR claims to greatly minimize the irregularities of English spelling. We classical educators like order and discipline. We want to believe that English spelling can be reduced to a predictable system with only occasional irregularities. We think this is a necessary argument against the anti-phonics crowd.

But here is the real truth. English is the most irregular of all of the modern languages. It is, in fact, in a class by itself. Not only does English have many phonograms with multiple sounds, it has many sounds that are spelled by multiple phonograms. There is an average of eight different ways to spell each of the long vowels in English, and there are few, if any, rules that govern these variations. If you know that it is boat rather than bote, it is not because of a rule but because you have seen the word spelled correctly many times. English has 19 vowel sounds, as compared to five for Spanish and Italian. Due to its complex history, there is no end to the richness and irregularity of the English language. For this reason, English-speaking children take longer to become fluent readers and take even longer to become proficient spellers. But the irregularity of English is not an argument against phonics; it is an argument for phonics. Most languages don’t teach phonics because their alphabets are regular and phonetic. In most other languages the alphabet is the only phonics needed. For Englishspeaking children, the alphabet is only the beginning. For English-speaking children, systematic, incremental, and common sense phonics is the classical way to teach our children how to read and spell.

consonants short & long vowels 57 common words manuscript printing artist-drawn coloring pictures drawing pages for every letter

*Note: Printing, an important pathway of the learning process, is an integral part of FSR. Some children, however, are reading-ready before their motor skills are developed enough for printing. If this is the case with your child, you may use FSR without the printing component.

FSR is a balanced, age-appropriate approach to phonics and reading, with a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. Also, while many phonics programs today use the ladder approach (consonant-vowel blending), we prefer the more traditional (vowel-consonant) approach combined with word families. Mastery of short vowels is the sine qua non of phonics programs, but few programs provide adequate practice. The FSR program consists of 5 student books with artist- drawn pictures to color, drawing pages for each letter or phonogram, and over 30 stories. The Teacher Guide leads you through the program and provides helpful assessments and teaching tips.

Phonics Flashcards

(5.5"x 4.25")

Phonograms are letters or letter teams that represent sounds. There are nearly 200 phonograms used to spell the 44 sounds used in the English language. In our Phonics Flashcards we have organized these phonograms into nine categories to give some rational order to the irregularities of English spelling. Phonogram cards can be combined and recombined to help students see the multiple ways a sound can be spelled, and the multiple sounds for a particular phonogram.

A Child's Guide to Word Mastery by Cheryl Lowe Classical Phonics consists of phoneticallyarranged word lists for students to practice their growing word recognition skills. In a word list there are no context clues, so the learner must rely on his mastery of letter sounds. If your child can pronounce each word in this list correctly, he knows his short vowel sounds, and you can move on to long vowels! Classical Phonics is the most effective tool we know of to address the repetition that young ones need when learning to read. It can be used as a supplement to any phonics program and covers nearly all English phonograms and sounds taught through second grade.

Perfect for any phonics program!

"I cannot praise First Start Reading enough. The ear training is key in learning to isolate letter sounds. The integrated writing practice connects the mental effort of reading with the finemotor skill of writing. Oh how I wish I had known of MP from the time my first child was in kindergarten! Some people think computers have made cursive writing skills obsolete, but good handwriting and computers are not mutually exclusive. Should we stop teaching language arts because a child can now text? Before the early 1920s, children were taught cursive in the first grade. Research shows that when third graders begin writing cursive, they return to a first grade speed level. By learning cursive earlier, students can focus more on other subjects once they reach the upper grades.

How can I help my struggling student with his online classes? 1. Begin with only one course. We strongly recommend starting the student with only one course, unless he is accustomed to completing large amounts of advanced classwork.

2. Plan to complete each assignment. A structured online class may require a great deal of time for the struggling student, so you may wish to reduce his other coursework while he is enrolled in the online academy. You may also need to minimize his extracurricular activities during the online course. Help him set aside ample time outside of class to work on his online course homework, so every assignment can be completed.

3. Plan for listening to lessons more than once. The student with auditory processing, comprehension, or memory difficulties may need more than one period of exposure to the content, especially as the pace quickens in any given class. Explain to the student that he must allow time for additional viewings of the class recording later in the week.

4. Expect to be a teacher's aide for your student. "Shadow" the class and assist by providing accountability with assignments, visual aids, and added explanations to promote understanding.

5. Express respect for the teacher. Even if differences arise, communicate respect for the teacher when speaking in front of the student. Provide a "unified front." Note the teacher's strong points in discussions. Encourage the student to express respect and gratitude to his teacher.

6. Keep a portfolio for the student. Note his progress frequently! The student may become discouraged if he compares himself to other students. Help him measure his success based on his own accomplishments, talents, and individual performance.

7. Stay the course! Even if you decide that the student will not re-enroll, help him finish what he starts. This will provide valuable lessons that will assist him in any endeavor.

Essentials, Etiquette, and Ear Training (Ages 3-4)*

Level A seeks to nurture wonder and language through an early love of books. It helps you strengthen your child's readiness skills through music, movement, and poetry. The child receives gentle lessons in colors, numbers, letters, vocabulary, shapes, Mother Goose rhymes, and prayers. Through the beauty of simple stories, lessons, and songs, Level A guides the child through improvement in each of these areas: oral language, fine-motor (small muscle) and gross-motor (large muscle) movement, and daily living skills.

Level B provides extensive practice in readiness skills with an emphasis on fine-motor skills. The child learns how to hold a pencil properly and how to color. Alphabet and number lessons integrate fine-motor practice every day. In Level B, the child learns manners. He practices saying please and thank you. He learns to win and lose games gracefully. To inspire a love of words, this level includes children's poetry set to beautiful music. Lessons introduce the names and sounds of letters, the names and values of numbers, as well as games, and stories. Through simple Bible stories, daily prayers, and memory verses from Holy Scriptures, the child learns of God's holiness, love, and mercy in Christ.

The Path Less

Traveled One Mother's Jouney to Give All Her Children an Excellent Education by Anita Veyera

It was, in a way, like reading the Gospel for the first time. Suddenly, I had hope. Someone had been where I was and had succeeded. Anita Veyera is a homeschool mother of three who lives in Virginia. She has a bachelor's degree in English and uses Cheryl Swope's Simply Classical to teach her children.

amilies come to trust Memoria Press for a variety of reasons. We came through desperation. Our oldest child did not speak until he was five, and he and his younger sister have significant receptive and expressive language difficulties. Finding a good, solid education for them was literally bringing us to our knees. We knew we wanted to homeschool. But having children with special needs threw another kink into things that we had not foreseen. How on earth would we teach them? We knew of no one who homeschooled special-needs children. It was just a matter of course that parents would hand these children to the state or an expensive private school to be educated. Yet even though the public school system had a wealth of "programs," we were not satisfied. From what we researched, our children would be taught "life skills," self-care, and sharing, but the emphasis on their actual education would not be strong. They would primarily be taught through screens, apps, and keyboarding, with little emphasis on penmanship or reading above their level. And godly character development was all but prohibited. They would, in short, not be encouraged to excel. Neither would any special talents they possessed be fostered.

hat if you could teach your child using the same writing program that produced such masters of the language as John Milton, William Shakespeare, and Benjamin Franklin? What if you could have the same basic composition curriculum used by Quintilian, the greatest teacher of ancient rhetoric, and Cicero, the greatest persuasive speaker of all time? Ancient writers invented a way of teaching writing known as the progymnasmata, which provided a method of teaching composition that not only taught budding writers a disciplined way to approach communication, but also helped them appeal to the heads of their audience. The 14 exercises, organized from the simplest and most basic to the most complex and sophisticated, were the core education of a classical speaker, designed to produce what Quintilian once called, "the good man, speaking well." Jim Selby has blown the dust off of the writing curriculum that was used in schools for over 1,500 years and put it in an easy-toteach format that will revolutionize your curriculum. Presented clearly and systematically, Classical Composition will give you a clear road map to writing excellence.

Starting Classical Composition Late? No Problem! We recommend that students begin Classical Composition in 4th or 5th grade, so students beginning in 6th grade or higher may want to complete two courses a year in order to catch up. Now you can purchase any two sets at a reduced package price. This allows students to complete two stages at an accelerated pace in the course of a year until they are caught up, helping them to develop their writing skills quickly.

Of thine own self beware ...

Shakespeare Signals the Perils of the Self by David M. Wright

Our modern obsession with the individual self has its roots in the Renaissance and seventeenth century. In that age a series of distinctive and arresting changes permeated the culture, as older modes of knowledge and behavior struggled with the new. By the end of the seventeenth century, a radically new England emerged— and rising from the ashes of the past, a new self.

S

hakespeare (1564-1616) must have sensed these cultural changes deeply enough to predict and highlight the perils of individualism in some of his plays, namely Romeo and Juliet. In his time, and especially in the seventeenth century, the notion of the individual changed significantly in its relation to the church, the monarchy, society, personal freedom, the literary life, public and private life, and even the cosmos. Most obvious across these domains was the indomitable shift from a communal self to an individual self. Though invented over a century before Shakespeare, the printing press was perhaps the most significant force in generating change for the individual. Gutenberg's press allowed for the mass production of reading material, which fostered new and developing ideas, and reached ever-expanding audiences. It also greatly affected the activity of reading. Previously, reading had been a communal activity, stemming from the oral, minstrel, and bardic traditions. But after the printing press, reading became a much more personal and private activity. The writings of the poet John Donne (15721631) in the early seventeenth century mark a key transition from the courtly and affected output of Ben Johnson and the Cavalier poets to the private and personal. Donne's "The Triple Fool,"

54

Of Thine Own Self Beware

for example, is strikingly personal; he uses the firstperson singular twice in the first line: I am two fools, I know, For loving, and for saying so In whining poetry (ll. 1-3)

Here Donne not only conveys a personal subjective voice, but he also comments on his "whining poetry.” This is not the elevated, artificial fare of courtly form and subject—this is private passion. In this poem and several of Donne's Holy Sonnets, the individual has a power—over his love, his life, his intellect, his soul, and his relation to others—that he heretofore did not possess. Inspired by Donne, George Herbert and the metaphysical poets follow him in their use of similar poetic forms (e.g., rhymed couplets, irregular odes, shape poems) and subjects, many of them devotional, private, and mystical. The shift in focus toward the individual in this era is made yet more visible by considering the political events of the seventeenth century. Politically, the century featured a surging movement of individual and democratic rights exemplified by a civil war, the execution of an autocratic King Charles, the Interregnum ("between reigns"), the restoration of the monarchy, and the Revolution of 1688—the overthrow of King James II by parliamentarians.

www.MemoriaPress.com

Through all of these major political events, one thing unites them all: the subversion of, or resistance to, a previously granted hierarchical authority—in favor of the individual. Not surprisingly, Shakespeare seemed to foresee where this might lead. In our age of self-focus, our "century of the self," we seem only capable of viewing the consuming "love" of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet as the perfect model of romantic love, so passionate that only such a union could heal the enmity of the feuding noble houses. Yet the true tenor of this "love" is undeniable: self-love, idolatry, and instant gratification. The dysfunctional adults in the play run amok with self-interest in flagrant disregard for the boundaries of authority, hierarchy, reason, and propriety, and in so doing, set the lovers on a sure path to their destruction. In the beginning (before he meets Juliet), the love-sick Romeo mopes around, fretting over his unrequited "love," the wise and chaste Rosaline who has rejected his doting proclamations. But in truth, Romeo's bitterness looks a little more like pouting over a missed bid for self-gratification. He does not respect nor see the value of Rosaline's chastity, bemoaning to Benvolio: ... she'll not be hit with Cupid's arrow. And in strong proof of chastity well arm'd, From love's weak childish bow she lives unharm'd. She will not stay the siege of loving terms, Nor bide th' encounter of assailing eyes, Nor ope her lap to saint-seducing gold. (1.1.206-212)

Fundamentally, true love desires the good of the other, but Romeo desires that the other should feel good to him.1 Yet he is, after all, an impetuous adolescent. And so is Juliet, Romeo's new amour fou, the 13-year-old child whom Shakespeare intends his audience view as a child—most likely to stave them from becoming too enamoured with the lovers' passionate infatuation. Even Capulet, Juliet's father, calls her a child in an effort to fend off Paris's suiting until she is at least a couple years closer to adulthood: My child is yet a stranger in the world, She hath not seen the change of fourteen years; Let two more summers wither in their pride Ere we may think her ripe to be a bride. (1.2.8-11) [1] Joseph Pearce, "Introduction." Romeo and Juliet, Ignatius Crticial Edititions, San Francisco: Ignatius Press, xii.

1-877-862-1097

The hasty, impulsive marriage of the very young Romeo and Juliet would have been as disturbing to the Elizabethans as it should be to us. Yet in our selfindulgent (romantic) reading, we overlook Juliet's true age, ascribing an adulthood to her that she does not possess—evident by the fact that we usually cast an actress who is around 20 years old for the role.2 But let us not forget that it is the adult characters surrounding the young lovers whose self-focus and self-interest generate the play's greatest scourge. Remember Sampson and Gregory, the crude Capulet instigators of the civic fray? Brash and lawless, they prowl the street, itching for a brawl with any Montague, their detested rival. The altercation develops, inflamed by the fiery Tybalt, whose modus vivendi is vile hatred and bullish pride until his death at the hands of the enraged Romeo in revenge for the reckless murder of Mercutio—another swaggering character, full of brilliance and wit, but also with a penchant for lewdness and a view of love as high as the belly and as broad as pleasure itself. Yet Romeo and Juliet and the other wild young men might have been set aright if only Capulet, Montague, Lady Capulet, the Nurse, the Prince, and even Friar Lawrence would have guided them with the light of wisdom, boundaries, love, and discipline. Instead, they offer little beyond their base commitments to vendetta, position, lust, status, wealth, and pride—hallmarks of the almighty self. A tragedy not of death by love, but a tragedy of dysfunction, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet remains a foreboding and cautionary tale of the unstoppable travesty of individualism, the precursor to and consequence which is our "century of the self."

Exploring America’s Musical Heritage:

Discovering Music:

In this course, Professor Carol—along with 38 other historians, scholars, and artists— takes you on a journey through America’s musical history. The arts give us a valuable way to connect with the past. When we sing the songs our great-grandparents learned around a campfire, read the poems they recited, and study the paintings or quilts they created, we visit the past in a tangible way. We connect with our legacy.

This program features a DVD of Professor Carol as she travels the world using music as the window into the history of thought and culture, along with a unit-by-unit Teacher's Manual to step you through it. Music has always been central to classical education, and by connecting music history to political and cultural history, we make all of history more memorable. Discovering Music brings Western culture alive for students.

y father was an aerospace engineer. When I was growing up, I never really knew what he did, since his job involved mostly top-secret projects. In fact, I never once visited his office, which required a high-security clearance even to enter. But over the years, I did manage to piece together a few facts about what he did. One day, when I was rummaging around in a supply closet, I came across a paperback book titled The Nike Zeus Propulsion System. At the bottom was my father's name. When I brought it in and asked him about it, he took it from me and said, nicely but firmly, "You're not supposed to have that." The Nike Zeus was the nation's first anti-ballistic missile (a missile that shoots down other missiles). He had apparently—I later learned—designed it. That explained his frequent visits to Vandenburg Air Force Base, from which test missile launches were frequently made, their vapor trails visible from our house in the south bay of Los Angeles County. And it explained why he could frequently be found in the garage at night, firing different materials to test their melting point. And that explained why he said with such authority when we sat on our living-room couch watching CNN as the Israelis launched Patriot missiles to shoot down the Iraqi SCUD rockets during the first Iraq War, "Oh, that's nothing. That technology is at least twenty years old. You should see what we have now." I later found out, through various conversations with my father and others, that he had headed the project to put the first three spy satellites into space. After being released from their cargo bay, their wings folded out into a 150-foot wingspan that had to be

positioned within the accuracy of the width of a nickel. "We got it right every time," he said. Had I known all this at the time, I would have been even more comforted when, as a college student having just read an article on the nation's missile defense system and the various strategies the Air Force employed to make sure we could launch our ICBMs in the face of a massive Soviet missile attack, my dad, to whom I was reading it while he was shaving, finally lowered his razor, looked at me, and said, "Don't worry about it. You have no idea what we have," and calmly finished shaving. One night, when he headed payload processing for the Space Shuttle, my dad came home somewhat aggravated. As it turned out, there was a problem getting the cargo out of the Shuttle cargo bay if a launch had to be aborted. The cargo was inserted in the cargo bay with the Shuttle standing on its end, vertically, on the launch pad. But how to get the cargo out so it could be transported back to the U.S.? For three nights we heard hammering and drilling in the garage. After the third night, he came in holding a board with various hydraulics and pulleys and other things I would never be able to identify. "I figured it out," he said. He was on at least two space shuttle launch teams, and was at Cape Canaveral in 1986 when the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its launch, killing seven astronauts. In his later years, before he had lost the ability to speak, we were sitting, watching a television news report on the Iranian nuclear centrifuges, which are still a problematic issue because that is the only way to produce weapons-grade plutonium. "They must have

operations. This is what was behind the now infamous math quiz posted on the website Reddit, in which a student was marked down for saying that 5+5+5=15 rather than saying that 3+3+3+3+3=15. The quiz question had to do with one of many new math "strategies" now being employed by teachers and publishers, in this case the "Repeated Addition" strategy for multiplication. This is one of the most controversial aspects of modern math pedagogy: the complicated way in which it proposes to teach simple arithmetic. This is not an accident and is, in fact, very intentional. The idea behind this "multiple strategies" approach is to intentionally complicate the process of learning arithmetic in order to force the student to think about the procedures he is learning. The more strategies employed to teach a child to solve simple arithmetic problems, goes the reasoning, the better off he will be. This is exactly the opposite approach to that taken by traditional educators. If we were to haul the teacher in my father's one-room schoolhouse into a modern math classroom, her first impression would be that the education world had been turned upside down. She would wonder why we had completely overcomplicated a simple procedure. And if we were to tell her that the reason we were doing it was to get children to understand arithmetic better, she would get out the dunce cap and put us on a stool in the corner.

60

Why Johnny Can't Add

What she would know was that this is precisely not the purpose of teaching arithmetic. She would understand implicitly that there are things you learn in order that you may think about them and things you learn so that you do not have to think about them, and that arithmetic is an example of the latter. Unlike the modern math educator, she would know that arithmetic is a tool—that is, a means, not an end. Arithmetic is not something you learn—it is something you should have learned. It has no value other than as a tool for learning other things, namely more advanced, conceptual math. She would know, unlike many modern math educators, that the point is not to understand arithmetic, but to use arithmetic in order to understand. You learn arithmetic, not in order to think about arithmetic, but in order not to think about it. "We should do all we can," said Kline, "to make the elementary operations so habitual that students do not have to think about them any more than one thinks when he ties his shoelaces." No one believes that a carpenter is made better able to build a house by contemplating the complex process by which his tools are made. No one believes that you can become a better writer by learning more about how the alphabet system was developed. To think too much about the things that are supposed to help you think can be positively detrimental. Kline tells

You have one hundred feet and yet you know when to use each one," at which point, "the centipede began to think about which foot to use next and was unable to move." "It is a profoundly erroneous truism," said the great mathematician Alfred North Whitehead, "that we should cultivate the habit of thinking of what we are doing. The precise opposite is the case. Civilization advances by extending the number of important operations which we can perform without thinking about them." The math education of my father's day produced a whole generation of great scientists and engineers. They are the ones who sent men to the moon and who

pioneered the computer revolution. They followed the great German scientists of the nineteenth century whose classical education enabled them to conduct the relativity and quantum revolutions in physics, and the development of genetics in biology. I asked my father one time whether he took calculus in high school. I was curious because so many of today's schools push advanced mathematical subjects younger and younger in the curriculum. "I never even heard of calculus until after I graduated from high school," he said. Poor man. If only he'd had some of the advantages of today's students, maybe he could have achieved something in life.

If you don’t begin your classical education until middle or high school, we would suggest that you start with Year 5 and move forward from there. Before beginning your study of the classics, it is always helpful if your student has a basic knowledge of Greek mythology (D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths [p. 62]) and has read a retelling of the Trojan War (Olivia Coolidge’s The Trojan War [p. 64]).

The story of the Middle Ages is told through the colorful lives of Attila the Hun, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Edward the Black Prince, and Joan of Arc, among others. This course guides students through the turbulent “dark age” of history and illustrates the transition from the end of ancient times to the birth of the modern era. This book is a perfect precursor to Famous Men of Modern Times.

Modern history—history, that is, after the fall of Constantinople in 1453—can sometimes seem like a confusing jumble of unrelated events. As a result, many curricula needlessly avoid this exciting period of history. Famous Men of Modern Times will bring the events of the last 500 years to life. These stories provide great insight into the foundations of the modern world.

The Oresteian Trilogy

The Three Theban Plays

Medea & Other Plays

Aeschylus was the first of the three great tragic playwrights. The Oresteia is the exciting trilogy about the end of the curse of the House of Atreus. Join Orestes as he seeks to revenge his father’s murder, but discovers, along with us, that revenge only begets revenge—that mercy and litigation are the better ends of justice.

Sophocles, “famous for wisdom,” won the playwright competition at the Festival of Dionysus many times. Here is the story of Oedipus, fated to unknowingly kill his father and marry his mother. This is the great myth, influencing all subsequent literature. Fate, free will, the quest for knowledge and truth—the glory and downfall of Western civilization.

Euripides further developed the tragedy, instituting the deus ex machina, a prologue with a background, and greater realism. His heroes are less resolute and more psychological, fraught with internal conflict. Here is the revenge of Medea and Hecabe, and the exciting adventures of Heracles in the Underworld.

The Divine Comedy

On Obligations

The Republic & the Laws

The Divine Comedy is one of the crown jewels of both Western and Christian literature. This epic, allegorical poem illustrates Dante’s spiritual journey of redemption that takes him through the pit of Hell (the Inferno) to the Beatific Vision of God (the Paradiso). The Student Guide contains helpful study questions, and reading notes for difficult lines.

Cicero was a man trying to give the politicians of his day solid principles to live by as they drove his fatherland, Rome, down the royal road of decay. His work On Obligations played a large role in Western Christendom but is daunting to read alone. Let us accompany your highschooler as he learns the principles of justice, wisdom, beneficence, courage, and propriety.

Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman statesman from the first century B.C., was convinced that the upright moral life was the happier life. The Republic became the blueprint of the U.S. government almost 2,000 years after it was written. In The Laws, Cicero defends his understanding of the upright moral life and becomes the foundation for the West's philosophical discussion on the natural law.

To be completed over four years. Timeline Handbook: Teaching guidelines, charts by grade and time period, and summaries of each event. Timeline Flashcards: One side has the date and the reverse side has the event. These cards are color-coded to the Timeline Wall Cards.

Christian Studies I-III

Christian Studies I: All Major Bible Stories up to the Entry into Canaan Christian Studies II: The Rise and Fall of Israel, the Period of the Prophets Christian Studies III: All Major New Testament Stories This series thoughtfully guides your students through The Golden Children's Bible, teaching them the fundamentals of Bible stories, history, and geography, with solid detail at a manageable pace. This is a three-year Bible reading course that builds faith by teaching salvation history as real history.

Teacher Manual: Insight and background for each lesson; additional discussion, composition, and research prompts. The Golden Children's Bible: Chosen for its simplified, but poetically appealing King James text along with its beautiful, accurate, and age-appropriate illustrations. This is important because we believe students should learn to revere the Bible as a sacred book, distinct from stories with cartoon heroes.

The Story of Christianity:

The Wars of the Jews:

David Bentley Hart gives a scholarly but readable portrait of the Christian Church, from its origins in Judaism to the "house churches" in contemporary China. This overview is perfect for study before delving into the more difficult church historians such as Josephus and Eusebius.

"There will not be left a stone upon a stone." Our children may know Christ's prophecy, but do they learn about its fulfillment? Josephus, a Jew turned Roman citizen, is regarded as the most trustworthy source on the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. A follow-up study of Scripture and the best introduction to the history of Christianity.

History of the Early Church

The City of God

Acts of the Apostles

Continue on from a historical study of the Hebrew people to an investigation of the history of the church. This was so evidently necessary to Christians of the 4th century, that one of their own, Eusebius, the bishop of Caesarea, wrote the first book to recount the struggles and victories of the first followers of Christ. In this year-long course, Chadwick's The Early Church is used as the main text, and students are directed to Eusebius' History of the Church when ancient testimony is appropriate.

The City of God, arguably Augustine's greatest book, is the source of some of Western society's greatest and most cherished beliefs. The book serves as the cultural fountainhead of all that followed, and it is unlikely that it will ever be equaled. The Teacher Guide contains helpful chapter summaries as well as a thorough introduction to teaching this course effectively.

The history of Christianity, particularly that of the early church, is something every Christian should know. But when we talk about what books about the history of the Church we should read, we often forget the most important and informative book: The Book of the Acts of the Apostles. Here is the exciting story of the travels, the teachings, and in many cases, the martrydoms of the apostles themselves as told by the author of the Gospel of Luke. Christian history starts here.
