THE WELL-STOCKED LIBRARY by Martin Cothran
I
n his new book, Out of the Ashes: Rebuilding American Culture, Anthony Esolen contrasts what Western culture was and what it is now by asking us to imagine a library in an old manor house. The lower half of this library would be stocked with books from modern Europe—"novels, collections of poetry, histories, biographies, travelogues, and so forth"—many of these in European languages other than English. Here, too, we would find the classic books for young people—Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island, The Jungle Book, along with maybe Peter Pan, The Secret Garden, and Winnie the Pooh. But the upper half of the room—perhaps built higher than the rest and accessible by several stairs—would be home to more intellectual literature—works in ancient languages, Latin and Greek, and books dealing with philosophy, divinity, political constitutions, law, and natural science.
"It was the library," says Esolen, "of a learned man interested in everything human and divine." In fact, such libraries were not at all uncommon in cultured homes a hundred years ago. Most of the books Esolen mentions were familiar to anyone who was culturally aware, which was most people. Esolen asks us to imagine what this library would be like today. The wheels in the channels of the ladder are coated with grime and mold. Rain has found its way through the neglected roof, and water is dripping from the ceiling. The books are mouseeaten and mildewed. There are a few signs of more recent life, but they consist of trunks of outworn clothing, tacky souvenirs from a trip to Disneyland, and several "glossy hardcover biographies of celebrities, like Elvis Presley and Jim Morrison." 2
Letter from the Editor
The great library is no more. It has fallen into disuse and disrepair. It is the victim of neglect by modern people who have not only forgotten the names of the authors of the Great Books, but who are in many cases no longer even capable of understanding them or appreciating their beauty of expression. Meditate on this library, and ask yourself whether you do not see there the condition of our own culture, rich with neglected treasures—forgotten, junked up, misused. Meditate also on what kind of person would have had such a library, and ask yourself why such people are so hard to find anymore. We have specialists today who could read and understand this or that book in such a library. But who is left who could read and appreciate all of them? The only way to save such a library is to throw open the windows, repair the roof and ceiling, replace the damaged books, and perhaps add a few new things of demonstrable worth, while reassessing a few old things to see if they still hold up. Our culture is like a library: It is either wellstocked with the classics or cluttered with trivialities. We could say the same thing about our own souls. This is perhaps the central purpose of classical education: to reacquaint ourselves with our history and culture, and to throw open the windows of our souls to the best things that have been thought and said, and, while we're at it, to get rid of some of the tacky cultural trivialities which now clutter our minds. Both our real and mental libraries should be stocked with the timeless, not the trivial. MemoriaPress.com

FAQ
Streaming Instructional Videos available for: The Aeneid | Traditional Logic I | First Form Greek | Latina Christiana | First Form Latin | Algebra I
What do I need to know about Streaming Instructional Videos?
How long does a subscription last?
Streaming Instructional Videos are a digital alternative to physical DVDs. They include the same thorough and engaging teacher instruction as our DVDs with the convenience of on-the-go viewing. Subscriptions can be purchased and accessed through MemoriaPress.com.
Purchase of a subscription gives you 15 months of unlimited access to your videos. If you need more time, simply purchase an extension before your membership ends, at 50% off.
What do I need to watch Streaming Instructional Videos? The only thing you must have is a device (computer, phone, tablet, etc.) with internet access!
How do I access my videos? After you purchase your subscription, all of your videos will be accessible via your My Account page at MemoriaPress.com. You will need internet access to watch your videos (they are not downloadable).
Do I also get DVDs when I purchase a streaming subscription?
Streaming vs. DVDs: Which one should I choose? If you have multiple children who will need to watch the videos in the coming school years, or if you just know you'll want to rewatch the Aeneid lessons again and again, or if you just like the way your Memoria Press DVD collection looks on the shelf—stick with the DVDs. If you don't have a DVD player but still want the help of Memoria Press' master teachers, or if you only have one school-age child, or if you take a minimalist approach to your bookshelves—streaming might be a great fit for you.
No, the streaming subscription does not include a set of DVDs.

Science Recommendations: Modern Biology is an extremely well-designed text and is the one used at Highlands Latin School, where, because the text contains a section on evolution not acceptable to many Christians, a teacher can treat issues of human origins and development separately. But we also have a high regard for the specifically creation-oriented A Beka text (designed for Christian schools) and Apologia (for homeschools). We have removed science from the 10th grade package in order to give you the opportunity to choose the right course for your family. Apologia Exploring Creation with Biology Modern Biology A Beka Biology

LAT IN
THE JUSTIFICATION
by Charles E. Bennett
FOR LATIN
T
he question as to the educational worth of any study must always be a pertinent one. If Latin is not of fundamental importance in the high-school curriculum, then large numbers of students are making a prodigious error in pursuing the subject, and the sooner we understand this, the better for our civilization. If, on the other hand, the increase is the result of wise choice or even of wise instinct, we must, while rejoicing at the greater recognition Latin is securing, at the same time admit our own vastly increased responsibility for its wise direction and promotion. Before considering the special reasons that exist in favor of studying Latin, let us first consider the function of language in general as an instrument of education. The function of education is purportedly to prepare pupils to be useful members of society. To make them such, it is essential that they be taught to understand as fully as possible the nature and character of the national life—social, civil, political, religious—in which they are born or in which their lot is cast. To a certain extent, also, it is essential that they learn to apprehend the nature and character of the larger life of the nation. What now is the instrument best adapted to the attainment of this end? It is language. Language is the supreme instrument in education, i.e. the higher education, because of its universal nature. It promotes intellectual discipline and brings intellectual power, because the study of language brings us at every turn face to face, as nothing else does, with subjects and questions of intellectual concern and intellectual interest. Language deals with ideas; it touches perpetually on problems of the relations of man to man, of man to society, and of man to the State. The analysis of language demands refined and precise thinking. So long then as ideas are important, and so long as the underlying conceptions which reflect the national life of a people are important, the supreme value of the mastery of these through language study will continue to be recognized. By the study of language is meant the study of one’s own language, but the study of one’s own language is achieved incomparably better by the indirect method of studying another language. Only so can the necessary processes of comparison be effectively instituted. Latin is of value because it confers a mastery over the resources of one’s mother Excerpt from Charles. E. Prima Latina
An Introduction to Christian Latin by Leigh Lowe | Grades 1-4 Are you looking for a gentle introduction to Latin and a course that prepares your young student for a more advanced study of the language? Prima Latina is specifically designed for students and teachers with no Latin background. This course was developed for children in 1st-4th grades who are still becoming familiar with English grammar and wish to learn Latin at a slower pace and learn English grammar in the process. Its goal is to teach and reinforce an understanding of the basic parts of speech while introducing Latin. It benefits the student by teaching him half of the vocabulary in Latina Christiana and grounding him in the fundamental concepts of English grammar, the key to Latin study.

First Form's grammar-based approach is perfect for the grammar stage student. It is also the best approach for any age because every student is in the grammar stage when he begins a subject. The syntax knowledge required in translation-based programs is a logic or rhetoric stage skill, which can easily overwhelm a beginning student unless he has first learned the grammar at a slow and gentle pace and is taught for mastery. Based on 20 years of teaching experience, the Forms series, beginning with First Form, has been used sucessfully by countless home and private schools because it helps the student make sense of what many consider a difficult subject. First Form is the ideal text for all beginners, grades 5 and up, or is a great follow-up to Latina Christiana. View samples online: MemoriaPress.com

FIRST FORM GREEK Introduction to Ancient Greek by Cheryl Lowe & Michael Simpson Based on the revolutionary First Form Latin series, First Form Greek is written for parents and teachers with or without a Greek background. Its goal is to present the grammar so logically and so systematically that anyone can learn it. At the same time, we have adapted the Latin Forms series to account for the differences between Greek and Latin, such as the new alphabet, overlapping sounds, more variation within paradigms, and less regularity. First Form Greek overcomes these challenges with the addition of weekly vocabulary reviews, more frequent recitation, and an “expanded” dictionary entry for Greek verbs.

THE FIVE MOST
COMMON ARGUMENTS by Martin Cothran
O
ne of the things a logic student learns is that, of the 64 possible kinds of arguments (also called syllogisms), only 19 of them are valid. Let's take the most common argument form of all: PREMISE #1: All flowers are plants (A) PREMISE #2: All roses are flowers (A) CONCLUSION: Therefore, all roses are plants (A)
T h is a rg u ment for m is ca l led a "BARBARA" (for reasons we will explain in a minute). If we converted eac h of t he ter ms i nto a let ter (S=roses, P=plants, and M=flowers), the argument above would look like this: PREMISE #1: All M is P PREMISE #2: All S is M CONCLUSION: Therefore, all S is P
The Five Most Common Arguments
BARBARA, CELARENT, DARII, FERIO
In the Middle Ages, William of Sherwood gave names to the 19 valid arguments.
When we put an argument into symbols like this, we call it the "form" of the argument. It is just an easy way to see how the argument is structured. In the BARBARA syllogism above, all the statements are A statements, which just means they are constructed in the form "All S is P." There are three other kinds of statements: E statements use the form "No S is P," I statements use the form "Some S is P," and O statements use the form "Some S is not P." If we take into account all four of these kinds of statements, we could come up with the 64 possible kinds of arguments. But of these 64 kinds of arguments, only 19 are valid. Validity just means that the argument is structured so that, if the premises are true, the conclusion must also necessarily be true. Of the 64 28
possible arguments, only 19 of them are structured this way. In the other forms—the invalid forms— there is no guarantee that the conclusion is true if the premises are true. In the Middle Ages, a philosopher named William of Sherwood gave names to these 19 valid syllogisms and put them in a four-line verse (the most common ones are in bold):
CESARE, CAMESTRES, FESTINO, BAROCO DARAPTI, DISAMIS, DATISI, FELAPTON, BOCARDO, FERISON BRAMANTIP, CAMENES, DIMARIS, FESAPO, FRESISON
The names are not accidental. The vowels and some of the consonants in each name tell us something about each syllogism. The advanced logic student learns what these letters mean. But the most basic thing they tell you is what kind of statements make up each argument. A BARBARA, for example (like the one above), is made up of three A statements. Note that all three statements in our first argument—the two premises and the conclusion—are A statements: BARBARA. We could also call it an AAA argument, or, simply, an AA argument, since it is according to the kind and arrangment of the premises by which we categorize arguments. You will see both A and E statements (but not I and O statements, curiously) in the five most common argument forms. In addition to BARBARA, there are: MemoriaPress.com
CELARENT: No flowers are trees (E) All roses are flowers (A) Therefore, no roses are trees (E) CESARE: No trees are flowers (E) All roses are flowers (A) Therefore, no roses are trees (E) CAMESTRES: All roses are flowers (A) No trees are flowers (E) Therefore, no trees are roses (E) CAMENES: All roses are flowers (A) No flowers are trees (E) Therefore, no trees are roses (E)
Notice that the middle term (the term in both of the premises but not the conclusion) is in bold in the arguments above. It is the position of the two middle terms that dictated on what line William of Sherwood put these syllogisms in his verse. The first line of the verse includes only syllogisms in which the middle term is the subject of the first premise and the predicate of the second premise—like the CELARENT above and the BARBARA we showed in the beginning of this article. Syllogisms in which the middle terms are in the predicates of both premises—like the CESARE and the CAMESTRES above—are in the second line. The third line of Sherwood's verse includes only those in which the middle term is in the subjects of both premises, and the fourth only those with the middle terms in the predicate of the first premise and the subject of the second (like the CAMENES above). Of these five common argument forms, the first, BARBARA, is the most common. Most of the arguments in Euclid's Elements, for example, the great classical work on analytic geometry, are BARBARAs. There is no obvious reason why these five arguments should be the most commonly used, although, if we analyzed them for long enough, we would see that they are conceptually the most simple and straightforward. Many logic students only learn enough of the subject to test arguments for validity. They would see one of the 64 forms, perform seven tests, and see if the argument passes all of these tests. But imagine how much simpler it would be for the student if he had simply memorized the 19 valid forms (the ones in William of Sherwood's verse). He wouldn't have to worry about all those validity tests: He would simply look at the argument, and see if it was one of the 19 forms he had memorized. If it was, then it would be valid; if not, then it would be invalid. This is what the logic student who sticks with the subject will learn. He will have mastered a difficult subject, and will end up with a simple procedure for analyzing arguments. Martin Cothran is the author of Traditional Logic I and II (p. 30) as well as Material Logic and Classical Rhetoric (p. 31).

BORING How Classical Music Speaks Across Time and Space
by Dr. Carol Reynolds
e all do it, don’t we? We carefully defend the bold choice we’ve made to educate our children seriously and rigorously. Friends or relatives may assert that we are choosing outdated traditions, irrelevant in our techno-saturated world. Latin in elementary school? Whatever for? The Great Books? Aren’t they terribly boring? Handwriting and memory work? We have computers for that kind of thing. Then, there’s the decision to commit ourselves to our priceless tradition of the Fine Arts: painting and sculpture, theater and dance, plus, of course, music. That, to many, seems even more of an accessory or frill. How do we explain laboring to instill an understanding of the masterpieces our modern society no longer values? Teaching the fine arts is not about turning children into professional artists, dancers, or violinists. It’s not even about taking lessons. It’s about teaching the substance of the fine arts. It’s about opening students’ minds to a world of color, movement, and sound that they won’t encounter easily otherwise. It’s about training the ear to listen, the eye to see, and the soul to drench itself with beauty.
Panos Karan playing music for children in a community of Napo River in Peru, December 2011. Photograph taken by Eloise Campbell
The case for what we tend to call “classical music” is one of the hardest to make. Music can seem so ephemeral. Literature more easily conveys a sense of heritage and ongoing relevance. Visual art, such as painting and sculpture, confronts a viewer with a physical presence. But music? Its substance disappears once the notes no longer sound in the air. Music’s meaning can be hard to grasp. So classical music, lacking a clear connection to daily lives, seemingly can be dismissed without much remorse. Yet in some parts of the world classical music is flourishing as never before. Look at the roster of names from the string sections of today’s orchestras or international piano competitions. The players come from nations, many of them non-Western, where the discipline required to achieve virtuosity continues to be taught and culturally embraced. This phenomenon may be encouraging, but can classical music flourish in parts of the world where such traditions have never existed? Can it speak to people fully unversed in such musical styles? The answer is an enthusiastic “yes.” I’ll share one story to underline the searing power of classical music to communicate. To my own surprise, I learned this story while giving a lecture series on a ship sailing the Indian Ocean. A musician named Panos Karan was performing on the same ship as I. An impressive British pianist of Greek parentage, he has plenty of credentials to his name. As a youth, he set himself the iconic goal of performing in Carnegie Hall. Through talent, persistence, and good fortune, he did. But afterwards, still in his twenties, he found himself thinking, “Now what?” Or, to use his own words: I had gotten all this training and failed to ask the most important question: Why am I playing music? ... Why am I only playing for people that can afford to buy a ticket? In the middle of this crisis, and with the thought very clearly in my head that perhaps I should stop playing music altogether and do something else, I thought I would give it one more try and go as far away as possible from the concert hall that I knew and try to find a completely new audience that knows nothing about the music that I was playing.
Unsure what he might accomplish, he set out on a voyage to the source of the Amazon River. Trekking through the jungle with a full-scale electronic piano and a power generator, he proceeded to play the same music he had performed on the concert stage for whomever would listen. As he says, “I wanted to see with my own eyes and feel in my hands what the music I was playing can really do.” 1-877-862-1097
Those accompanying him first to the Amazon and then to West Africa were able to film the most extraordinary scenes. You can see these for yourself at www.panoskaran.com. The children in particular sat with rapt attention as Karan’s fingers flew across the black and white levers. They couldn’t get enough of the sound or the magical techniques he employed to make the sounds. Adults who had never heard the music of Bach or Handel were dancing—clapping and moving to these “old Baroque pieces” as if they were the newest popular blast. In cultures where dance holds a nearly sacred position, this spontaneous response was deeply meaningful. Building on these experiences, Karan moved to the next stage of his endeavor. With Western backers, he began to put instruments in kids’ hands, supported their training, and even launched youth orchestras that later were able to perform in places like London and Boston. You can take many lessons from Panos Karan’s experiences. But the most important lesson, for me, involves reemphasizing Western classical music’s vital content. It is not an elite, dusty remnant of the past. It speaks across time and place to everyone. Its complexity and refinement are not barriers, but rather invitations to experience its continuously gratifying richness. The notes may vanish in the air once sounded, but the power of classical music makes a connection to the listeners’ daily lives—one not easily dismissed. We who have such easy access to the treasury of Western arts can experience this daily. So let us educate our children with music of the most uplifted and uplifting kind, music rich in melody, vibrant in harmony, strong in structure, and transcendent in beauty.

The Classical Core Curriculum is a complete classical Christian curriculum that emphasizes the traditional liberal arts of language and mathematics and the cultural heritage of the Christian West as expressed in the great works of history and literature. The curriculum has an early focus on the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic, and a special emphasis on Latin. Latin is the best way to gain an academic vocabulary, to learn the formal system of grammar, and is, along with math, the best early critical thinking skills training. The curriculum’s study of the cultures of Athens and Rome, as well as Biblical and Church history, is designed to provide a basis for a proper understanding of European and American history.

A historical study of the greatest minds and cultures of preceding generations is an essential pillar of classical education. The three components of this course include the history of ideas, biography, and key cultural developments, particularly in Western European and American societies. The texts include helpful maps, timelines, and illustrations. Our study guides provide comprehension questions that help students focus on the most important information from each chapter. The Teacher Guide for each year includes three tests.
by Edward Eggleston
Eggleston says in his preface that "the primary aim of this book is to furnish the little learner reading matter that will excite his attention and give him pleasure" and "to make the mind of the pupil familiar with some of the leading figures in the history of our country by means of personal anecdote." We have included Eggleston's original illustrations in addition to our own.

An Interview With Michelle Swope* What is the hardest thing about the different challenges you face in your life? The hardest challenges of my life are not being able to do what I dream about in my life, such as marry, drive a sky-blue bug that is a convertible, act well, sing, dance ballet professionally (Giselle in Swan Lake, Clara or Sugar Plum Fairy in Nutcracker, Aurora or Carabosse in Sleeping Beauty). I have autism and schizophrenia. I'm dyslexic (reading, spelling). I see this especially when I read hard books. I often prefer children's books to adult books, even though I am an adult. How has a classical education helped you? From a very early age I remember different things, such as Mom teaching me to read and Dad teaching me through Shakespeare the love of poetry and acting and the fine arts. I studied the language of Latin, very basic French, and grammar. All of this helped me spell and associate grammar with writing. What was your favorite area of study in your classical education? My favorites in school differed in classes based on my age. From about age 3 to 9, my favorites were reading, history, and music. As an older child and teen, my favorites were music, history, spelling, grammar, Latin, and French. Famous Men of Rome helped me study the ancients in greater depth. I learned Latin from Latina Christiana. I loved Latin sayings and Latin vocabulary. I would recommend these to anyone who cares to learn. What is your favorite thing about writing poetry? Poetry takes care of worries and lifts me up high above every mundane care. Poetry explains me in a joyous way. Why do you want other children with special challenges to receive a classical education? I want other children to study not just anything, but to be educated through Simply Classical, because I learned from the best, my mom, and I believe that when my mom finished with us and took her teachings to the world, a whole new level began for children with special needs. I believe that your children can be the best if and when they learn from the best. And, yes, you may quote me, for I am being frank about what I feel. My mom is the best and knows whereof she speaks. Please share a closing poem with our readers. The poem I'll close with is this: Love is First Rule Silence writes a letter, Talk speaks a note. Friendship is golden. Love is first rule in Family, faith, and future.
To my family with highest thanks, Michelle Lynn Swope *Michelle Swope is Cheryl Swope's daughter. Cheryl is the author of Simply Classical.

Numbers Books (Part I & Part II) by Leigh Lowe
Learning the alphabet is the critical first step in learning how to read. The Alphabet Book teaches letter recognition, letter formation, and pencil grip through repetition and tracing. Activities, created with the younger student in mind, make learning each letter simple and fun. This book also introduces initial and ending sounds, providing a gentle introduction to phonics. The Alphabet Book acts as a great supplement to any primary program or full-year preschool/kindergarten program.
The Numbers Book is the perfect introduction to numbers, counting, and patterns. Lots of tracing practice also makes this book ideal for the slightly older student who has already mastered counting, but still needs extra practice writing numbers. The activities (mazes, coloring, pattern recognition, connect the dots, and more!) are so much fun that your student won't be able to wait for the next lesson!

Classical Phonics
A Child's Guide to Word Mastery by Cheryl Lowe Classical Phonics consists of phonetically arranged word lists for students to practice their growing word recognition skills. In a word list there are no context clues, so the learner must rely on his mastery of letter sounds. If your child can pronounce each word in this list correctly, he knows his short vowel sounds, and you can move on to long vowels! Classical Phonics is the most effective tool we know of to address the repetition that young ones need when learning to read. It can be used as a supplement to any phonics program and covers nearly all English phonograms and sounds taught through second grade.
First Start Reading, Book E by Michelle Tefertiller In Book E we complete the program by covering long vowel teams, soft c and g, and three sounds of y. Once the student has mastered the basic phonics in the FSR series, he is ready to continue reading progress with real literature.

FSR is a balanced, age-appropriate approach to phonics and reading, with a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. Also, while many phonics programs today use the ladder approach (consonant-vowel blending), we prefer the more traditional (vowel-consonant) approach combined with word families. Mastery of short vowels is the sine qua non of phonics programs, but few programs provide adequate practice.

The FSR program consists of 5 student books with artistdrawn pictures to color, drawing pages for each letter or phonogram, and over 30 stories. The Teacher Guide leads you through the program and provides helpful assessments and teaching tips. *Note: Printing, an important pathway of the learning process, is an integral part of FSR. Some children, however, are reading-ready before their motor skills are developed enough for printing. If this is the case with your child, you may use FSR without the printing component.

Phonics Flashcards (5.5"x 4.25")
Phonograms are letters or letter teams that represent sounds. There are nearly 200 phonograms used to spell the 44 sounds used in the English language. In our Phonics Flashcards we have organized these phonograms into nine categories to give some rational order to the irregularities of English spelling. Phonogram cards can be combined and recombined to help students see the multiple ways a sound can be spelled, and the multiple sounds for a particular phonogram.
Phonics from A-Z A manual for parents and teachers who want to go deeper into the subject of phonics and reading. It includes information on every aspect of how children best learn to read as well as reliable, accurate, and common-sense advice, and extensive lists of resources.
Teaching Phonics & Word Study This book is an excellent resource for Grammar School teachers who desire additional help with phonics concepts in order to become better spelling teachers.

Create a keepsake for your child as you witness improvement in his knowledge, attention to detail, and writing skills through the exercises. My Thankfulness Journals (New American Cursive font) by Cheryl Swope
These journals let students practice their cursive writing while thinking about God's daily blessings in their lives. Each page begins "Dear Heavenly Father," and closes, "Your child," with space for the child's signature. In between is room for students to list their blessings each day. The Intermediate Journal is a smaller font size and has less tracing as students progress.
Cursive Practice Sheets (New American Cursive font)
One question we hear repeatedly is how to get more worksheets to practice New American Cursive writing. We try to put extra sheets in our books, but it never seems to be enough. Our new Cursive Practice Sheets book includes pages for practicing each cursive letter, Scripture copywork, and blank practice sheets. Since the most important objective of the NAC program is mastery, the more your student is able to practice, the better!

Simple, clear, & effective! Some people think computers have made cursive writing skills obsolete, but good handwriting and computers are not mutually exclusive. Should we stop teaching language arts because a child can now text? Before the early 1920s, children were taught cursive in the first grade. Research shows that when third graders begin writing cursive, they return to a first grade speed level. By learning cursive earlier, students can focus more on other subjects once they reach the upper grades.

STAGES
TO THE CENTRAL ONE IDEA
Using the Trivium to Uncover the Heart of a Work BY DAVID M. WRIGHT
GRAMMAR
LOGIC
TRUTH
RHETORIC
iscovering and internalizing the Central One Idea in a great work is vital for proper reading and for cultivating wisdom and virtue.1 There are four stages of acquisition and expression that can be used to lead the student (and teacher) to this Central One Idea. The four-stage sequence is rooted in the trivium— grammar, logic, and rhetoric. In the trivium, grammar is language, logic (dialectic) is thought, and rhetoric is expression. Put another way, in the grammar stage, one accumulates the fundamental elements, features, and facts of a body of knowledge. In the logic stage, one arranges, connects, organizes, compares, and reasons with the facts learned and draws a conclusion(s). In the rhetoric stage, one expresses that conclusion/truth to others. Sister Miriam Joseph defined the trivium as the three arts of language pertaining to the mind: grammar is the art of inventing and combining symbols (letters and words); logic is the art of thinking; and rhetoric is the art of communication. She also states it in this way: grammar is concerned with the thing-as-it-is-symbolized; logic is concerned with the thing-as-it-is-known; and rhetoric is concerned with the thing-as-it-is-communicated.2 The trivium, she says, is the instrument of all education at all levels because the arts of grammar, logic, and rhetoric govern the means of communication— namely reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The trivium is a movement from distinct parts into a synthesized whole. The three stages guide the student to relate the facts learned into a unified, organic whole. Marguerite McGlinn, introducing Joseph’s work, says, “The trivium teaches us that language evolves from the very nature of being human. … We invent symbols to express the range of practical, theoretical, and poetical experiences that make up our existence.” We can see, then, that the trivium has much to do with being human, with negotiating our lives. It reveals the ontological reality within us through our use of reason and language. The trivium embodies how we think, how we learn, and how we communicate. In our particular context of studying a great work, the teacher has firmly in mind the abstract singular truth that he or she wishes the student to learn, which is the Central One Idea of the work. Though popular culture may be fond of saying, “It’s not the destination that counts, but the journey,” nothing should be further from classical teaching and learning. For both the journey and the destination count, but especially the destination, which is the understanding and expression of the central idea of the work. This article is adapted from Memoria Press' Student Study Guide for Shakespeare's Henry V.

hat if you could teach your child using the same writing program that produced such masters of the language as John Milton, William Shakespeare, and Benjamin Franklin? What if you could have the same basic composition curriculum used by Quintilian, the greatest teacher of ancient rhetoric, and Cicero, the greatest persuasive speaker of all time? Ancient writers invented a way of teaching writing known as the progymnasmata, which provided a method of teaching composition that not only taught budding writers a disciplined way to approach communication, but also helped them appeal to the heads of their audience. The 14 exercises, organized from the simplest and most basic to the most complex and sophisticated, were the core education of a classical speaker, designed to produce what Quintilian once called "the good man, speaking well." Jim Selby has blown the dust off of the writing curriculum that was used in schools for over 1,500 years and put it in an easy-toteach format that will revolutionize your curriculum. Presented clearly and systematically, Classical Composition will give you a clear road map to writing excellence.
Starting Classical Composition Late? No Problem! We recommend that students begin Classical Composition in 4th or 5th grade, so students beginning in 6th grade or higher may want to complete two courses a year in order to catch up. Now you can purchase any two sets at a reduced package price. This allows students to complete two stages at an accelerated pace in the course of a year until they are caught up, helping them to develop their writing skills quickly.

The arts give us a valuable way to connect with the past. When we sing the songs our great-grandparents learned around a campfire, read the poems they recited, and study the paintings or quilts they created, we visit the past in a tangible way. We connect with our legacy. Supplementary articles, interviews, and notes are available on Professor Carol's website.

G. K. Chesterton and the Defense of the Christian West
n his Autobiography, G. K. Chesterton tells the story of having only recently come to public attention as a result of a running debate on the pages of The Clarion with that newspaper's editor, Robert Blatchford. Blatchford was a proud and voluble atheist who had issued an open challenge to readers to respond to his broadsides against Christianity. Chesterton, a young and rising British journalist, had responded in four essays in 1904 that remain to this day classics of Christian apologetics. Chesterton attended a dinner party at the time, put on by The Clarion, and noticed a gentleman sitting next to him, "one of those very refined and rather academic gentlemen from Cambridge," as he described him: "Excuse my asking, Mr. Chesterton, of course I shall quite understand if you prefer not to answer, and I shan't think any the worse of it, you know, even if it's true. But I suppose I'm right in thinking you don't really believe in those things you're defending against Blatchford?" I informed him with adamantine gravity that I did most definitely believe in those things I was defending against Blatchford. His cold and refined face did not move a visible muscle; and yet I knew in some fashion it had completely altered. "Oh, you do," he said, "I beg your pardon. Thank you. That's all I wanted to know." And he went on eating his (probably vegetarian) meal. But I was sure that for the rest of the evening, despite his calm, he felt as if he were sitting next to a fabulous griffin.
The Edwardian Era in which Chesterton came to prominence followed the late Victorian Era, a time in which the intellectual class—in what Julian Benda called "The Treason of the Clerks"—had abandoned Christianity as a living belief. Christianity was first replaced by traditional morality—to which the Victorians held the more strongly as the religion that had given it warrant was pulled out from underneath it. Deprived of Christianity, the Victorians made morality their religion. But by the time of the Edwardians, This article is an abridged version of Martin Cothran's Introduction to Orthodoxy, by G. K. Chesterton, newly published by Mud House Publishers and available from Memoria Press.

Reason & Imagination
skepticism, "an universal wolf" (to use Shakespeare's words), had undermined traditional morality too. In such circumstances, it is no wonder that Chesterton, an unapologetic apologist for both Christianity and the morality for which it was the only justification, would have been viewed in such exotic terms. In fact, part of Chesterton's allure could be attributed to the interesting figure he cut as a defender of orthodoxy in an age in which heresy had become orthodox. Skepticism enjoyed the fashionable status that always accrues to the subversive and the revolutionary in modern societies. Cultural revolutionaries thrive on the conceit that they are outsiders living in defiance of a stuffy and inflexible establishment, and their very existence depends on the belief that they are insurgent radicals battling an entrenched elite. But in a world in which skepticism had become established and the revolutionaries were in charge of the culture, it was the subversives who were now ripe for satire, and Chesterton was uniquely fitted to administer it. "There had been plenty of humor and wit and ridicule in the public controversy on religious matters," explained British writer Curtis Maycock, "but it had all been on the other side—everyone took for granted the ridiculing of tradition and orthodoxy. The idea of using such weapons in their defence was so novel as to be incomprehensible." It is Chesterton who was now the revolutionary, fighting those who would blind us to the obligations of the eternal.
It was a battle in which not only our religion, but our civilization, was at stake. For Chesterton, Western civilization was synonymous with Christendom, that majestic and all-pervading cultural ideal that still haunted the dreams of Europe well into the twentieth century. There was no separating Christianity from the West: Their history was intertwined and their fate was one. This is why Orthodoxy is not only a book of Christian apologetics, but one of the great defenses of the Christian West. Chesterton's argument in the first part of Orthodoxy is this: Western man may have lost his belief in sin, but he retains at least a belief in sanity. But when we look to the philosophies of the modern world we find all the cultural signs of madness. Modern worldviews possess the very characteristics of insanity, the chief of which are fragmentation and reductionism—the inability to see the world whole and the obsession with some one idea at the expense of all others. According to Chesterton, The modern world is not evil; in some ways the modern world is far too good. It is full of wild and wasted virtues. When a religious scheme is shattered, … it is not merely the vices that are let loose. The vices are, indeed let loose, and they wander and do damage. But the virtues are let loose also; and the virtues wander more wildly, and the virtues do more terrible damage. The modern world is full of the old Christian virtues gone mad. The virtues have
1-877-862-1097
gone mad because they have been isolated from each other and are wandering alone.
The most salient feature of modern worldviews is not necessarily that they are illogical, but that they are fractured, isolated, each founded on some one Christian doctrine, separated from other truths in the balance of Christian belief. We are all, said Chesterton, "the survivors of a wreck, the crew of a golden ship that had gone down before the beginning of the world," and as that great catastrophe has faded into history and receded in our collective memory, we have each in our intellectual and spiritual desperation sought refuge on some one piece of the wreck, thinking it the whole ship. For the Marxist it is the brotherhood of man, for the materialist, the objectivity of nature, for the evolutionist, change itself. So closely connected is Western civilization with Christianity that Western civilization, deprived of its religious foundation, is quite literally coming apart. In the second half of Orthodoxy, Chesterton argues that the beliefs of Christianity fit the facts of the world, like a key fits a lock. And it isn't only that the beliefs fit the facts, but that the peculiarities of the facts of the world are explained by the equally peculiar beliefs of Christianity—and that the peculiarities match. This was an implicit articulation of John Henry Newman's "illative sense"—the idea he articulates in his Grammar
What Is Western Civilization? 61 Cursive Penmanship
of Assent that the real reason we come to a conviction about anything is not because there is one simple logical argument that proves it, but rather that everything seems to prove it. Chesterton makes a similar case: The secularist is not to be blamed because his objections to Christianity are miscellaneous and even scrappy; it is precisely such scrappy evidence that does convince the mind. I mean that a man may well be less convinced of a philosophy from four books, than from one book, one battle, one landscape, and one old friend. The very fact that the things are of different kinds increases the importance of the fact that they all point to one conclusion.
false, but nothing can be irrelevant to the proposition that Christianity is true. Zulus, gardening, butchers' shops, lunatic asylums, housemaids and the French Revolution—all these things not only may have something to do with the Christian God, but must have something to do with Him if He lives and reigns.
And yet if one were forced to resort to one book that best represented Chesterton's thoughts on Christianity, there really is no doubt which one it should be. It is said that he had no one masterpiece, not because none of his books were great, but because so many of them were. There is truth to this. But while time has taken many of his books from our attention, it has perhaps also done us the service of concentrating our attention on this one The role of reason in Chesterton's defense of great book—a book, though written over a hundred metaphysical law and order took a particular and years ago, that speaks to us today in our cultural crisis unique form. The story of the Middle Ages is told through the colorful lives of Attila the Hun, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Edward the Black Prince, and Joan of Arc, among others. This course guides students through the turbulent “dark age” of history and illustrates the transition from the end of ancient times to the birth of the modern era. This book is a perfect precursor to Famous Men of Modern Times.
Modern history—history, that is, after the fall of Constantinople in 1453—can sometimes seem like a confusing jumble of unrelated events. As a result, many curricula needlessly avoid this exciting period of history. Famous Men of Modern Times will bring the events of the last 500 years to life. These stories provide great insight into the foundations of the modern world.

Dorothy Mills takes the student on an adventure, exploring the geography, culture, architecture, and most prominent people of Egypt, Persia, the Hittites, Israel, and more. Not only does she teach the valuable history and lessons of the ancient peoples, but she gives the students an understanding of the people and neighbors out of which Christianity sprung.
The journey continues, starting in Crete and ending in the Hellenistic Age ushered in by Alexander the Great. Students learn about the development of democracy, the primordial defense of democracy in the Persian wars, the heyday of Athens (also known as the Golden Age), and that sad self-destruction known as the Peloponnesian Wars. But it is not history alone—culture, values, and life lessons are taught.

The Oresteian Trilogy
The Three Theban Plays
Medea & Other Plays
Aeschylus was the first of the three great tragic playwrights. The Oresteia is the exciting trilogy about the end of the curse of the House of Atreus. Join Orestes as he seeks to revenge his father’s murder, but discovers, along with us, that revenge only begets revenge—that mercy and litigation are the better ends of justice.
Sophocles, “famous for wisdom,” won the playwright competition at the Festival of Dionysus many times. Here is the story of Oedipus, fated to unknowingly kill his father and marry his mother. This is the great myth, influencing all subsequent literature. Fate, free will, the quest for knowledge and truth—the glory and downfall of Western civilization.
Euripides further developed the tragedy, instituting the deus ex machina, a prologue with a background, and greater realism. His heroes are less resolute and more psychological, fraught with internal conflict. In his characters, we see the polar extremes to which human nature may go: cold reason and maniacal passion, nobility and cruelty, triumph and regret, grief and comfort.

The Divine Comedy
On Obligations
The Republic & The Laws
The Divine Comedy is one of the crown jewels of both Western and Christian literature. This epic, allegorical poem illustrates Dante’s spiritual journey of redemption that takes him through the pit of Hell (the Inferno) to the Beatific Vision of God (the Paradiso). The Student Guide contains helpful study questions, and reading notes for difficult lines.
Cicero was a man trying to give the politicians of his day solid principles to live by as they drove his fatherland, Rome, down the royal road of decay. His work On Obligations played a large role in Western Christendom but is daunting to read alone. Let us accompany your highschooler as he learns the principles of justice, wisdom, beneficence, courage, and propriety.
Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman statesman from the first century B.C., was convinced that the upright moral life was the happier life. The Republic became the blueprint of the U.S. government almost 2,000 years after it was written. In The Laws, Cicero defends his understanding of the upright moral life and becomes the foundation for the West's philosophical discussion on the natural law.

Student Book: 30 lessons; weekly memory verses; maps & timelines; 5 review lessons & tests; comprehension, drill, and discussion questions; references Golden Children's Bible page numbers as well as actual Scripture references. Teacher Manual: Insight and background for each lesson; additional discussion, composition, and research prompts. The Golden Children's Bible: Chosen for its simplified, but poetically appealing King James text along with its beautiful, accurate, and age-appropriate illustrations. This is important because we believe students should learn to revere the Bible as a sacred book, distinct from stories with cartoon heroes.

The Wars of the Jews:
The Fall of Jerusalem by Josephus "There will not be left a stone upon a stone." Our children may know Christ's prophecy, but do they learn about its fulfillment? Josephus, a Jew turned Roman citizen, is regarded as the most trustworthy source on the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. A follow-up study of Scripture and the best introduction to the history of Christianity.
Takes students back through the highlights of the Bible, reviews drill questions, memory passages, and more! Can serve as a review course for Christian Studies I-III or as a survey study of the Bible. Our new Reader gives students an overview of each book of the Bible.
The Story of Christianity: A History of 2,000 Years of the Christian Faith by David Bentley Hart
David Bentley Hart gives a scholarly but readable portrait of the Christian Church, from its origins in Judaism to the "house churches" in contemporary China. This overview is perfect for study before delving into the more difficult church historians such as Josephus and Eusebius.

History of the Early Church
Continue on from a historical study of the Hebrew people to an investigation of the history of the church. This was so evidently necessary to Christians of the 4th century, that one of their own, Eusebius, the bishop of Caesarea, wrote the first book to recount the struggles and victories of the first followers of Christ. In this year-long course, Chadwick's The Early Church is used as the main text, and students are directed to Eusebius' History of the Church when ancient testimony is appropriate.

Christian Studies
The City of God
by St. Augustine, Vernon J. Bourke ed. The City of God, arguably Augustine's greatest book, is the source of some of Western society's greatest and most cherished beliefs. The book serves as the cultural fountainhead of all that followed, and it is unlikely that it will ever be equaled. The Teacher Guide contains helpful chapter summaries as well as a thorough introduction to teaching this course effectively.
Acts of the Apostles (King James Version) The history of Christianity, particularly that of the early Church, is something every Christian should know. But when we talk about what books about the history of the Church we should read, we often forget the most important and informative book: The Book of the Acts of the Apostles. Here is the exciting story of the travels, the teachings, and—in many cases—the martrydoms of the apostles themselves, as told by the author of the Gospel of Luke. Christian history starts here.
