GOOD “FROSH” START FOR THOMAS • After a slow start, freshman Adonis Thomas settled in and had a solid performance in the Tigers’ season-opener versus Belmont Nov. 15.

2012 Tigers Hoops Signees Damien Wilson 6-6/190 Mableton, Ga./Oak Hill Academy

Shaq Goodwin 6-8/230 Decatur, Ga./Southwest DeKalb

Wilson, who is finishing his senior year at Oak Hill Academy, is rated the No. 63 overall prospect in the Class of 2012 by ESPNU. Originally from the Atlanta area, Wilson was a member of the Atlanta Celtics AAU team, which has produced talent such as current NBA stars Josh Smith and Dwight Howard. A lefty that likes to slash in the lane to get his buckets, Wilson led his Oak Hill team last December with 20 points in an 80-59 win over Melrose, which featured current Tiger Adonis Thomas. Oak Hill finished the season with a 31-4 record while Wilson, a former Mableton (Ga.) Pebblebrook High standout, averaged 12 points per game. Wilson is rated as the No. 18 shooting guard and No. 90 overall prospect by Yahoo! and Rivals Sports. Scout ranks him as a four-star prospect and the nation’s No. 21 overall small forward. Max Preps ranks him as the No. 1 prospect in the state of Virginia and the No. 23 overall recruit.

Goodwin helped lead Southwest DeKalb High School to a 24-6 record in 2010-11 before losing 70-53 to Rockdayle County in the Class AAAA Georgia State Championship game. Goodwin averaged a double-double of 18 points and 10.1 rebounds per game last season at Southwest DeKalb while shooting over 70 percent from the floor. He also averaged 3.2 blocks per contest. Goodwin’s best performance came in a playoff win over Lakeside in which he scored 41 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Goodwin received Georgia Class AAAA All-State first team honors for his performance during the 2010-11 season. The 2011-12 Southwest DeKalb team was also ranked No. 25 in MaxPreps.com’s preseason national rankings. Goodwin is also a part of the same AAU program as Wilson, the Atlanta Celtics. Alumni of the Celtics include current NBA players Dwight Howard, Josh Smith, Derrick Favors, Joe Johnson and Amare Stoudemire.

LAST MEETING

#18/19 Memphis 70, Austin Peay 68 (ot) Dec. 16, 2010 Despite trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half, Memphis fought back to force overtime and eventually escaped with a 70-68 non-conference victory over Austin Peay. The Tigers committed 14 first-half turnovers and shot just 34.8 percent in the opening period, but still enjoyed a 24-19 cushion heading into the break. Four-straight turnovers to start the second half quickly turned into a 16-0 Governors run that put Memphis on its heels. Scoring 21-straight over seven minutes that spanned both halves, Austin Peay turned a 24-14 deficit into a 35-24 lead just three minutes into the second half. Sparked by his own four-point play at the 16:45 mark, Charles Carmouche single-handedly willed the Tigers back into the game by scoring or assisting on Memphis’ first 20 points of the second half. The Tigers finally came back to tie the contest after a corner triple from Chris Crawford that capped a 19-4 Memphis run and knotted the game at 47-all with 8:35 to play. Memphis again was trailing in the closing minutes. Down 56-53 with 27 seconds left, Will Barton drew a foul and headed to the line. Barton made the first and missed the second, but a fortuitous bounce off the rebound allowed Memphis to get the ball back trailing 5654. The other Barton brother responded this time, as Antonio took the ball on the right wing and took two dribbles before lofting a 12-foot floater up and in to tie the game at 56 and force overtime. Clutch three-point shooting by Memphis in the extra period proved to be enough to lift the Tigers past the Governors. Crawford nailed two trifectas and assisted on another by Will Barton, as the Tigers jumped out to a 6862 advantage with just under a minute to play. Austin Peay refused to lay down, tough, as triples from Melvin Baker and Justin Blake brought the Governors back within 69-68 with 13 seconds to play. After Will Barton made 1-of-2 free throws to extend the advantage to 70-68, the Tigers locked down on defense and forced a missed three-point attempt from Blake at the buzzer. Austin Peay won the battle on the glass 51-41, and both squads committed over 20 miscues apiece (UofM 24; APSU 20). APSU Baker Terry Fraley Brown Edmonson Williams Caldwell Triggs Blake TEAM Totals
