SETTING THE SCENE • Memphis (1-0) meets Michigan (3-0) in the opening game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational Championship Round on Monday, Nov. 21. The game, to be televised on ESPN2, is slated for a 2 p.m. (CT) start at the Lahaina Civic Center in Maui, Hawaii.

• The Tigers are ranked No. 10 in both the Associated Press (AP) and the ESPN/USA Today coaches polls, which were released Nov. 14.

The Wolverines are ranked No. 17 in both national polls.

• Memphis won its season opener Nov. 15 with a 97-81 win over Belmont at FedExForum. The game was an EA Sports Maui Invitational opening game.

• The Tigers also won their two exhibitions with victories over LeMoyne-Owen College 119-67 Nov. 2 and Christian Brothers 79-56 Nov. 11.

• Memphis returns all five starters and 10 letterwinners from last year’s squad.

• Michigan opened the 2011-12 season with wins over Ferris State 59-33 on Nov. 11, Towson 6447 on Nov. 14 and Western Illinois 59-55 on Nov. 17.

TIGERS ON THE RADIO All Memphis basketball games are broadcast on the Tigers’ network flagship station, WREC 600AM. Dave Woloshin calls the playby-play, while Matt Dillon serves as the color analyst. Dillon and Forrest Goodman (in studio) host the pre- and postgame shows.

WREC 600AM also broadcasts Josh Pastner’s weekly radio show, which is held at the Lynchburg Legends Bar & Grill located in the East Memphis DoubleTree Inn. Forrest Goodman serves as host of the weekly call-in show.

The first Pastner radio weekly call-in show is scheduled for Nov. 29.

JOSH PASTNER TELEVISION SHOW Head coach Josh Pastner’s weekly television coach’s show is televised every Sunday night at 10 p.m. (CT) during the season by FOX 13/WHBQ-TV in Memphis. The show begins in early December. Dave Woloshin and Matt Stark serve as the show’s co-hosts.

• That 2000 Arizona team that won the Maui title went on to advance to the 2001 NCAA Tournament title game.

TIGERS IN HAWAII TOURNAMENTS • In its history, Memphis has played in three tournaments on the Hawaiian islands.

• Memphis has participated in the Maui Invitational (1988, 1992, 1999, 2006), Rainbow Classic (1996) and Pearl Harbor Classic (1985).

• The Tigers have an overall record of 9-8 when playing in Hawaiian tournaments.

MEMPHIS IN IN-SEASON TOURNAMENTS/ CLASSICS • The Tigers have an overall record of 89-56 in regular season tournaments/classics in the program’s history.

• Memphis has won 16 in-season tournament titles/classics.

• The last time the Tigers carried home the trophy from an in-season tournament (more than one game) was last year. Memphis won the Global Sports Challenge with wins over Centenary, Northwestern State, LSU and Tennessee Martin.

A TEAM USA U19 REUNION MONDAY • Memphis’ Joe Jackson and Michigan’s Tim Hardaway Jr. were teammates on USA Basketball’s U19 squad that played in the FIBA World Championships in Latvia this past summer.

• The USA U19 squad recorded a 7-2 record and placed fifth at the FIBA World Championships.

• Jackson started all nine games in the tournament and averaged 11.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists. He shot 44.8 percent from the floor and 77.8 percent from the free throw line.

• Hardaway Jr. was the squad’s top reserve, playing in all nine contests and averaging 20.2 minutes of action. He posted averages of 9.4 points and 2.1 rebounds, while shooting 43.3 percent from the field and 85 percent from the charity stripe.

WOODEN, NAISMITH WATCH LISTERS TO FACE OFF MONDAY • Memphis and Michigan both have a presence on the Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy preseason watch lists.

• The Tigers’ Will Barton and Joe Jackson and the Wolverines’ Tim Hardaway Jr. all appear on both preseason lists.

MEMPHIS VERSUS THE BIG TEN • The Tigers have an all-time record of 16-16 versus Big Ten Conference foes.

• Memphis has played Illinois (1-4), Indiana (01), Iowa (0-2), Michigan (2-1), Michigan State (2-0), Minnesota (2-2), Nebraska (1-0), Ohio State (0-2), Penn State (3-2), Purdue (5-1) and Wisconsin (0-1).

• The last time the Tigers played a Big Ten Conference opponent was the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Memphis met Michigan State in an NCAA Tournament South Regional semifinal contest, and the Tigers won that game 92-74 at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Tigers Tip-Ins From Nov. 15 Season Opener Vs. Belmont • Memphis scored over 80 points in a season opener for a sixth-straight year when it defeated Belmont 97-81.

• Josh Pastner’s Tigers squads averaged 94.3 points in season openers in his three years as head coach.

• With the win over Belmont, the Tigers won their eighth-consecutive season opener (since 2004-05). Memphis is a perfect 8-0 in season openers at FedExForum.

• The Tigers ran their record to a perfect 13-0 in exempt event games (tournament/classics) at FedExForum.

• Memphis hit 58.6 percent from the floor, the best field goal percentage in a season opener since 1995-96. In that year’s season opener, Memphis hit 59 percent in a 91-76 win over Purdue.

• Three Tigers scored 20 or more points in the win over Belmont (Will Barton, 23; Wesley Witherspoon, 22; Joe Jackson, 20). It is the first time three Tigers scored 20 points in a game since November of the 2005-06 campaign. In a Nov. 28, 2005, win over Lamar (108-83), Chris Douglas-Roberts (23), Shawne Williams (21) and Rodney Carney (21) all scored over 20 points.

• Charles Carmouche tied a career best with five steals in the win over Belmont.

• Will Barton scored a career-high 23 points.

He also hit a career-best nine FT.

The Home of The Tigers The 2011-12 season marks the eighth for the Tigers in their home arena, FedExForum, which officially opened in September, 2004. Located just a few feet off Beale Street on historic Highway 61, FedExForum rises to extend the heart of the Memphis entertainment district.

Memphis plays all of its 2011-12 home contests in the 18,400seat arena, which serves as the host for the 2012 Conference USA Tournaments (men/women). FedExForum was also the host site for the 2005-09 Conference USA Tournaments, 2009 NCAA Men’s South Regional and 2010 NCAA Women’s South Regional.

At 135 feet high, FedExForum provides a new backdrop for historic Beale Street. The 805,850 square-feet arena, covering 13.8 acres, features five levels as well as state-of-the-art locker rooms and facilities for sports teams, as well as an exceptional dining and entertainment experiences for its patrons.

Wilson, who is finishing his senior year at Oak Hill Academy, is rated the No. 63 overall prospect in the Class of 2012 by ESPNU. Originally from the Atlanta area, Wilson was a member of the Atlanta Celtics AAU team, which has produced talent such as current NBA stars Josh Smith and Dwight Howard. A lefty that likes to slash in the lane to get his buckets, Wilson led his Oak Hill team last December with 20 points in an 80-59 win over Melrose, which featured current Tiger Adonis Thomas. Oak Hill finished the season with a 31-4 record while Wilson, a former Mableton (Ga.) Pebblebrook High standout, averaged 12 points per game. Wilson is rated as the No. 18 shooting guard and No. 90 overall prospect by Yahoo! and Rivals Sports. Scout ranks him as a four-star prospect and the nation’s No. 21 overall small forward. Max Preps ranks him as the No. 1 prospect in the state of Virginia and the No. 23 overall recruit.

Goodwin helped lead Southwest DeKalb High School to a 24-6 record in 2010-11 before losing 70-53 to Rockdayle County in the Class AAAA Georgia State Championship game. Goodwin averaged a double-double of 18 points and 10.1 rebounds per game last season at Southwest DeKalb while shooting over 70 percent from the floor. He also averaged 3.2 blocks per contest.

Goodwin’s best performance came in a playoff win over Lakeside in which he scored 41 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Goodwin received Georgia Class AAAA All-State first team honors for his performance during the 2010-11 season. The 2011-12 Southwest DeKalb team was also ranked No. 25 in MaxPreps.com’s preseason national rankings. Goodwin is also a part of the same AAU program as Wilson, the Atlanta Celtics. Alumni of the Celtics include current NBA players Dwight Howard, Josh Smith, Derrick Favors, Joe Johnson and Amare Stoudemire.

• Pastner had a record of 49-20 at Memphis in his first two seasons, the most victories by a Tigers head coach in that span of time.

• Last year, Pastner guided Memphis to a 25-10 overall record and a 10-6 Conference USA mark. The Tigers won the 2011 C-USA Tournament title and earned an NCAA Tournament berth.

• As a part of the University of Memphis’ Centennial celebration (1912-2012), the Tigers unveiled their “retro” uniforms in the Nov. 15 season-opening win over Belmont.

Hot shooting and lockdown defense got the 2011-12 Memphis men’s basketball season going, as the Tigers posted a 119-67 victory over Division II LeMoyne-Owen College (LOC) in their first exhibition game.

Seven Tigers scored in double figures on the night led by Will Barton with 22 points. LOC’s Teshawn Byron paced all scorers with 33.

Memphis was impressive on both sides of the ball, shooting 60.3 percent from the field while holding LOC to just 38.6 percent shooting and forcing 25 turnovers. The Tigers outscored the Magicians 40-11 off takeaways.

In addition to Will Barton’s scoring total, the Tigers got 16 points each from Antonio Barton, Charles Carmouche and Wesley Witherspoon. Stan Simpson added 14 points, Adonis Thomas tallied 11 and Joe Jackson added 10 points. Hippolyte Tsafack was the Tigers’ top rebounder with six boards.

The Tigers trailed early after turnovers on two of their first three possessions, but got going with a trey from Jackson followed by a quick steal off the inbounds pass and a layup from Will Barton. Byron singlehandedly kept the Magicians in the game with eight points in the first three minutes.

Newcomers Thomas and Simpson got in on the scoring action to give Memphis its first double-digit lead of the night at 30-20 midway through the first half. However, Byron was unstoppable from beyond the arc and his 17 points and 4-of-4 shooting from long distance had the Magicians within eight points at 33-25 with 8:50 left in the half.

Free throws eventually made the difference as Memphis scored the next seven points from the line, the beginning of a 19-0 run. The Tigers eventually established a 5729 halftime lead.

LOC scored four of the first six points out of the break, but it was Carmouche’s turn to wow the crowd with seven points in the first three minutes of the second half. Back-toback scores from Witherspoon punctuated by a trey from Thomas put the Tigers up 76-36 at the 15:26 mark, and the game was out of reach the rest of the way.

Playing its final tune-up before the regular season tips off, Memphis dominated cross-town foe Christian Brothers with a 79-56 win. Sophomore Will Barton paced the Tigers with 27 points, while Joe Jackson added 14 and Chris Crawford contributed 13.

Senior Wesley Witherspoon led all players on the boards with nine rebounds, including five on the offensive glass, to give the Tigers a 38-22 edge in that category. For the game, Memphis shot 48.1 percent from the field while holding the Buccaneers to just 39.2 percent shooting with 19 turnovers.

Memphis steals on the first two CBU possessions set the tone early as the Tigers scored the first six points of the game. After a 0-for-3 shooting start, the Buccaneers finally got on the board with a trey. But, Crawford provided a big lift off the bench in the early going with 13 points on five-straight buckets to build a 19-5 Memphis lead. Crawford was 5-for-5 from the field with three treys before the 12-minute mark, part of a 9-of-13 shooting start for the Tigers.

Crawford’s hot hand soon extended to the rest of the team as Memphis put together an 18-0 run to go up 26-5 with 8:51 left in the first half. A Pat Graham trey stopped the Tigers’ run for a brief moment, but back-to-back dunks from Barton on the next two Tigers possessions had the Memphis lead up to 23 points at 31-8.

A 7-0 CBU spurt gave the Buccaneers some life in the waning minutes of the first half, cutting the lead to 17 points at 37-20. Memphis freshman Adonis Thomas drained a three at the other end, but CBU scored the final five points of the half with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to make it 40-25 Memphis at the break.

With his team up 57-34, Jackson entered his name in the dunk contest as he took a steal the length of the court and hammered it home. With frustration mounting, CBU fouled Antonio Barton hard, earning a technical foul and more free throws for the Tigers, which allowed them to extend their lead to 62-34 with 8:27 left in the game.

Down 72-36 with just under five minutes to play, the Buccaneers drained treys on four-straight possessions in a 13-2 run. But it was too little too late as Memphis coasted the rest of the way to victory.

EA Sports Maui Invite • Opening Game Memphis kicked off the season in impressive fashion with a 97-81 win over Belmont in the opening game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Three players scored at least 20 points, including 22 from Wesley Witherspoon, who was a perfect 8-of-8 from the field.

Will Barton was the Tigers’ leading scorer with a career-high 23 points, while Joe Jackson added 20 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Freshman Adonis Thomas shined in his Tigers debut with 12 points.

The Tigers shot nearly 59 percent from the field. A Belmont team that lost to No. 6 Duke by one point in its opener Nov. 11 managed just 39 percent shooting and had 18 turnovers.

Despite an 11 a.m. tip, the Tigers showed no signs of sluggishness, as Memphis jumped out to a 16-4 lead. J.J. Mann ended the Bruins drought with a 7-0 scoring spurt of his own just before the 12-minute mark, and another Belmont free throw at 11:36 cut the lead to 16-12.

From there, the Bruins matched Memphis bucket-forbucket to stay within three at 39-36 with three minutes remaining. However, it was defensive pressure that allowed the Tigers to score seven of the last 10 points in the half and take a 46-39 lead into the locker room.

The Tigers began the second half much as they did the first, with a 5-of-5 shooting start and a 13-2 run to take a 59-44 lead with 17 minutes left to play. A jumper from Thomas at the 11:39 mark gave Memphis a commanding 72-54 lead.

That would be the last Memphis field goal for almost four minutes as Belmont went on a 12-1 run once again assisted by the free throw line to cut the deficit to just seven points at 73-66. The Bruins refused to go away, however, as they used three-straight treys to keep it close and still trail by just seven points at 84-77 with less than four minutes left in the game.

But, the Tigers kept their composure and came alive down the stretch with a 12-2 run to push the lead back to double digits at 96-79 with one minute left.
