SETTING THE SCENE • Memphis (0-0) takes to the road to open its 2014-15 season with a neutral-site contest against Wichita State (1-0) in Sioux Falls, S.D., Tuesday, Nov. 18. The game is being played at the Sanford Pentagon. • The Tigers were not ranked in either preseason national poll (first regular-season polls were released Nov. 17), but appeared in the Also Receiving Votes category in both polls. Memphis was No. 35 in the Associated Press poll and No. 31 in the USA Today coaches poll. The Shockers were ranked No. 11 in both national preseason polls. • Memphis played its lone exhibition game Nov. 12 and dropped a 74-70 overtime decision to Christian Brothers. The Tigers also played Saint Louis in a closed scrimmage Nov. 8. • Memphis returns two starters and only five letterwinners from last year’s squad. • The Shockers opened their 2014-15 campaign Nov. 14 with a 71-54 win over New Mexico State. Wichita State defeated Northwood (Fla.) 112-55 in a Nov. 8 exhibition. • The Shockers return three starters and seven letterwinners from last year’s squad. The Tigers earned an NCAA Tournament atlarge berth and advanced to the “Big Dance’s” third round. Memphis defeated George Washington in the second round, before falling to Virginia in the third round. The postseason appearance was the Tigers’ 14th-straight. Joe Jackson and Shaq Goodwin both were named to the All-American Athletic Conference second team. Austin Nichols was named the league’s Rookie of the Year, and Michael Dixon Jr. was selected the conference’s Sixth Man of the Year. Head coach Josh Pastner improved his overall record to 130-44. The 130 wins are the most by a Tigers head coach in the first five seasons. The 130 wins also place Pastner in the No. 7 spot for most wins by a head coach in his first five seasons in NCAA Division I history.

WHAT THE SHOCKERS DID A YEAR AGO • Wichita State posted a 35-1 overall record and a perfect 18-0 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) mark. • The Shockers swept the MVC regular-season and tournament titles. • Wichita State earned the MVC automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and was the Midwest Region’s No. 1 seed. • The Shockers advanced to the NCAA Tournament third round, where they dropped a narrow 78-76 to eventual NCAA runner-up Kentucky. • Gregg Marshall was the consensus National Coach of the Year by the USBWA (Henry Iba Award), Naismith, Associated Press and NABC. • Cleanthony Early and Fred VanVleet earned NABC All-America honors. Early also was a John R. Wooden Award All-American.

SOUTH DAKOTA, YOU’RE NO. 43 • On Tuesday, Memphis will play its first game in the state of South Dakota. • In the program’s history, South Dakota will be the 43rd state in which the Tigers will play a game. • After Tuesday’s contest, Memphis will have only seven states remaining to visit, and those seven states are: Alaska, Colorado, Delaware, Maine, New Hampshire, North Dakota and Vermont. MEMPHIS-SOUTH DAKOTA CONNECTION • Although the Tigers have never played in South Dakota, there is a connection between the Bluff City and the Mount Rushmore State. • Former Mitchell High School hoops standout Mike Miller played six seasons (2003-08, 201314) for the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies. • Miller was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year in 2005-06. • Miller’s brother, Ryan, served as an operations assistant for the Memphis Tigers from 2004-07. • Ryan was on the Tigers’ staff when Memphis advanced to back-to-back NCAA Elite Eights in 2006 and 2007. • Mitchell, S.D., is located approximately 75 miles west of Sioux Falls. JOSH PASTNER Head Coach 130-44 Record 6th Year in 2014-15 • A Kingwood, Texas, native, Pastner was hired as the University of Memphis’ 17th head coach on Apr. 7, 2009. • Pastner has a record of 130-44 at Memphis in his four seasons, the most victories by a Tigers head coach in that span of time. • His 130 wins are the seventh-most by a head coach in the first five seasons in NCAA Division I history. • Last year, Pastner guided Memphis to a 24-10 overall record and a 12-6 American Athletic Conference mark. • In each of his five seasons, Pastner led the Tigers to a 20-win campaign and a postseason berth (2010 NIT; 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 NCAA) • Pastner served as an assistant coach for the Tigers in the 2008-09 season. • Prior to joining the Memphis basketball family, Pastner spent 12 years of his college basketball life at Arizona as a player, staff member and assistant coach. • While in Tucson, Pastner was a member of Wildcats squads that made 12-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and posted a 290-103 record (19972008). • Pastner was a player on the 1996-97 Arizona team that won the NCAA title.

TIGERS VERSUS THE MISSOURI VALLEY • Memphis has a 31-32 record against current members of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). • The Tigers have played eight of the 10 MVC schools. The only two MVC schools Memphis has not played are Evansville and Missouri State. • The last time Memphis faced an MVC school was the 2012-13 campaign. That season, the Tigers defeated Northern Iowa 52-47 in the Battle for Atlantis in The Bahamas. FINAL FOUR “FEEL” TUESDAY • Both head coaches in Tuesday’s MemphisWichita State match-up have been on teams that advanced to the NCAA Final Four. • Memphis head coach Josh Pastner won an NCAA title as a player on the 1996-97 Arizona squad. • Pastner also was a member of the Arizona staff in 2000-01 when the Wildcats advanced to the NCAA championship game. • In the 2013 NCAA Tournament, Gregg Marshall guided his Shockers team to the NCAA Final Four. TIGERS LOOKING FOR 15TH 20-WIN SEASON • When the 2014-15 season officially opens Nov. 18, the Tigers will be looking for a 15th-straight, 20-win season and a 15th-consecutive postseason berth. • In 2012-13, the Tigers set the record for consecutive 20-win seasons with their 13th straight. The previous record of consecutive 20-win seasons was 12 from 1982-93.

The Home of The Tigers The 2014-15 season marks the 11th for the Tigers in their home arena, FedExForum, which officially opened in September, 2004. Located just a few feet off Beale Street on historic Highway 61, FedExForum rises to extend the heart of the Memphis entertainment district. Memphis plays all of its 2014-15 home contests in the 18,400-seat arena, which served as the host site for the inaugual American Athletic Conference Championship last March. FedExForum also hosted the 2014 NCAA Tournament South Regional last March. GOODWIN, NICHOLS receive preseason american athletic conference honors • Shaq Goodwin and Austin Nichols both were named to the 2014-15 preseason All-American Athletic Conference first team. • Memphis and SMU were the only two teams in the league to have two first team picks. tigers picked third in preseason american athletic conference poll • At the league’s Oct. 29, 2014, media day in New York City, the Tigers were picked third in the American Athletic Conference’s preseason poll. • Memphis was third behind Connecticut and SMU. Rounding out the preseason top-five were Cincinnati in fourth place and Tulsa in fifth. MEMPHIS RECEIVES NCAA PUBLIC RECOGNITION AWARD FOR fourth YEAR • For the fourth-straight year, the Memphis men’s basketball team received an NCAA Public Recognition Award, given to teams with APRs in the top-10 percent of their respective sports. • Memphis was one of 13 schools in the nation to receive an NCAA Public Recognition Award and also participate in the 2014 NCAA Tournament. • Memphis and Louisville were the only two American Athletic Conference programs to receive an NCAA Public Recognition Award. • The NCAA Public Recognition Awards are based on the sports’ most-recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR). This year, the top performing APR scores ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000. The most-recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.

tigers success in the classroom UNDER PASTNER • Head coach Josh Pastner stresses the importance of players earning their degrees, and it shows in his numbers. • Since taking over the program in 2009, 20 players have earned their degrees. • Of those 20 players, seven earned their diplomas in under 3.5 years. • The latest to graduate under Pastner were Michael Dixon Jr. and Geron Johnson, both of whom graduated in May of 2014. • The next up to graduate is junior Shaq Goodwin, who is on track to graduate in the summer of 2014. staff in the off-season, tapping Keelon Lawson as an assistant and Evarist Akujobi as the strength and conditioning coach. Lawson moves up to the collegiate level after a highly-successful high school career in the Bluff City. Lawson coached 11 seasons at Hamilton High School and led the WIldcats to a perfect 39-0 record and the Tennessee Class AAA state title in 2005-06. That squad is the last one from the city of Memphis to post an unbeaten season. Akujobi comes to Memphis from Houston Baptist, where he was the director of strength and conditioning for the entire Huskies athletics program. Akujobi primarily worked with the Houston Baptist men’s basketball squad from 2011-14.

TIGERS TAKE CANADIAN TOUR LAST SUMMER • In mid-August, Memphis went on a four-game, six-day exhibition tour to Canada. • The Tigers played four games in four nights and posted a 2-2 record. • Both of Memphis’ losses were to Carleton University, which had won 10 national crowns in 12 seasons. • The Tigers’ two wins came against the University of Ottawa and McGill University.
