Last Time on the Course... T P C R i v e r s B e n d B ea r c at C l a s s i c ( C i n c i n n at i ) The University of Memphis women’s golf team was about three-quarters of the way through their second round when heavy rains and tornado watches forced the cancellation of the second round at the TPC River’s Bend Bearcat Classic. Due to the cancellation of the second round, Memphis finished third in the event in the official GolfStat results that are reported to the NCAA. As the University of Cincinnati scored it, with four scores out of six players counting, the Lady Tigers finished seventh. “We were really making a move despite playing in some heavy rain,” Head Coach Beth Harrelson said. “I think we were heading to a second place finish, but then we had tornado watches and greens flooding. The girls were really putting some good shots together despite being soaked out there.” With the cancellation of both the second and third rounds due to weather, the tournament will now go on record as an 18-hole event. Memphis will finish seventh in the event with a 313 (+25). Freshman Michaela Fletcher will finish tied for second for her second straight tournament after a day one 72 (E). Fletcher had picked up a pair of birdies and had taken the individual tournament lead in the second round with seven holes remaining when the weather forced the cancellation of the round. Fletcher was one of four golfers that were showing on par on Tuesday when the weather kicked up. Senior Ashley Kees had just four holes remaining when the event was cancelled. She was +3 on the day and was in the top 19 at a tie for 19th at the last live stats update. Instead, she finishes tied for 35th following Monday’s 80 (+8). Leighann Cabush will finish tied with Kees at tied for 35th and Julia Gerlach will finish tied for 47th at 81 (+9). Senior Natalie Turk and freshman Emily Goldenstein will finish the tournament tied for 56th following an opening round 82s. Wofford’s Lauren Dunbar will receive individual medalist honors after a day one 71. Dunbar had dropped to a tie for ninth mid-way through her second round and was at +10 on the day in the rain and storms of Tuesday, but will grab the tournament win after being the lone golfer to score under par on Monday. Using the Cincinnati scoring, host Cincinnati will win the event with a team score of 307 from Monday. Morehead State finishes second (308), Eastern Kentucky third (309) and Bowling Green State finishes fourth (310). Just seven strokes separated the top 10 teams in the tournament with just the one round being put on the books. Using the Golfstat scoring that the NCAA uses, Cincinnati and Morehead State shared the tournament title, followed by Memphis (313) followed by the thresome of Bowling Green State, Eastern Kentucky and Murray State in fourth.
