feated Maryland 89-70 in the NCAA Tournament second round in Kansas City, Mo. MEMPHIS VERSUS NCAA DIVISION I SCHOOLS FROM VIRGINIA • The Tigers have played eight of the 14 NCAA Division I basketball programs located in the state of Virginia. • Memphis has a 31-14 overall record (.689 winning percentage) against NCAA Division I basketball programs from Virginia. • The Tigers have played George Mason (1-0), James Madison (1-0), Old Dominion (1-0), Richmond (4-0), VCU (4-2), VMI (1-0), Virginia Tech (18-12) and William & Mary (1-0). • Since 2000-01, Memphis is 4-1 versus NCAA Division I basketball programs from the state of Virginia, including a 1-0 mark in the postseason (defeated Virginia Tech in the 2005 NIT). • The last time the Tigers played an NCAA Division I program from Virginia was near the start of the 2012-13 season. Memphis fell to VCU 78-65 at the Battle 4 Atlantis (opening game) in The Bahamas. MEMPHIS-VIRGINIA CONNECTION • The Virginia Cavaliers program opened its new homecourt — the John Paul Jones Arena — for the 2006-07 season. • And, the Wahoos can give a big thank you for that arena to alum Paul Tudor Jones, who is also a native Memphian. • Jones, who gave Virginia a $35 million donation for the construction of the arena, was born in Memphis Sept. 28, 1954.

• Jones attended Presbyterian Day School (elementary school) and Memphis University School (high school), before enrolling at Virginia in the early 1970s. He graduated from Virginia in 1976. PASTNER MAKES JONES ARENA HISTORY • And it’s history Memphis head coach Josh Pastner may want to forget. • Pastner was an assistant coach on the Arizona staff in November of 2006 when the Wildcats played Virginia in the first game in the John Paul Jones Arena (Nov. 12, 2006). • Early on in that game, it looked as if Arizona was going to put a damper on the Cavaliers’ grand opening of their new homecourt. • However, Virginia rallied from a 19-point, firsthalf deficit to defeat the No. 10 nationallyranked Wildcats 93-90. PASTNER VERSUS BENNETT • While Sunday’s game is the first between the two as head coaches, Josh Pastner and Tony Bennett were on opposing benches another time in NCAA Tournament play. • That NCAA Tournament encounter came in 2000 when Pastner was still a player for Arizona and Bennett serving on his father’s staff at Wisconsin. • The Wildcats were the West Region’s No. 1 seed, while the Badgers were the No. 8 seed. • Wisconsin pulled the upset that day, defeating Arizona 66-59 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. • That Badgers squad advanced to the NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis.

TIGERS VERSUS FIRST TIME FOES • Memphis and Virginia play Sunday for the first time on the hardwood. • Virginia is the only the second first-time opponent for Memphis in 2013-14. • The last time the Tigers faced a first-time foe was earlier this season. Memphis posted a 10169 win over Rutgers Feb. 4. • The Tigers have a 157-70 all-time record (.692 winning percentage) when facing first-time foes. • Since 2000-01, the Tigers are 30-2 (.938 winning percentage) against first-time opponents. • The only two setbacks against first-time opponents since 2000-01 were to Stanford (2000 Puerto Rico Shootout) and Duke (2005 Preseason NIT). • Under head coach Josh Pastner, Memphis is 9-0 against first-time foes. HIDE YOUR EYES! • If fans are expecting solid free throw shooting in Sunday’s NCAA Tournament third-round game, they may be disappointed. • Sunday’s contest features the two teams that are near the bottom of their respective leagues in free throw percentage. • Memphis is ninth (of 10 teams) in The American in free throw percentage at 65 percent. • On the other side, Virginia is 11th (of 15 teams) in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 66.8

percent clip from the charity stripe. BATTLE OF SCORING WILLS • Sunday’s NCAA Tournament third-round game may come down to which team imposes its scoring will on the other. • Memphis has The American’s second-best scoring offense, netting 77.4 points per game. • The Tigers’ scoring offense is ranked No. 33 in the nation. • However, the Tigers face quite possibly their stiffest test this season in Virginia. The Cavaliers hold their opponents to only 55.4 points per game. • Virginia’s scoring defense (55.4 ppg) is first in both the Atlantic Coast Conference and the nation. FIELD GOAL SHOOTING BATTLE SUNDAY • One reason the Tigers are one of the nation’s top scoring offenses is they shoot the ball well. • Memphis shoots 47.9 percent from the floor, which is second in The American and 21st in the nation. • And there’s a reason Virginia is the nation’s top scoring defense, and it’s the Cavaliers hold their opponents to a 38.6 shooting percentage from the field. • Virginia’s 38.6 field goal percentage defense is first in the Atlantic Coast Conference and eighth in the nation.

PASTNER MAKES GIFT DONATION TO ATHLETICS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Less than a week after announcing the largest monetary gift in the history of Tigers athletics, University of Memphis athletics officials reported another major gift to the department’s capital campaign Dec. 12. “I am very proud to announce that our men’s basketball coach Josh Pastner has made a $250,000 donation to our capital campaign”, said Memphis Athletics Director Tom Bowen. “Josh’s gift is the largest ever made by a Memphis coach and will be used for sport enhancements and improvements. “We are making great strides in building a culture of champions at the University of Memphis. As part of our strategic plan, we are working to enhance programs and facilities for all our studentathletes and sports.” Pastner’s gift of $250,000 will become part of the $40 million athletics capital campaign. Earlier this month, University officials announced that former Tigers basketball player Bill Laurie and his wife, Nancy, had given the athletics department a $10 million lead gift, the largest donation in the history of Tigers athletics. Further details on the capital campaign and other gifts will be announced in the coming weeks.

MEMPHIS ANNOUNCED $10 MILLION GIFT TO ATHLETICS President Brad Martin and Athletics Director Tom Bowen announced Dec. 2 that alumni Bill and Nancy Laurie have made an extraordinary gift to the University of Memphis. Their $10 million contribution to the capital campaign for athletics facilities is the single-largest philanthropic gift in the history of the athletics department, and the second-largest gift ever in the 100-year history of the university. Bill and Nancy Laurie are both graduates of the University of Memphis (then known as Memphis State University). Bill was a starting guard on the Memphis State basketball team that played in the 1973 NCAA championship game. They are passionate philanthropists and have given numerous gifts in support of the arts, athletics and education. By securing the $10 million lead gift, the athletics department leadership has reached a significant benchmark in the capital campaign. Memphis has already secured 25 percent of the funds necessary to reach its goal of $40 million, less than 120 days after the plan was unveiled by President Martin. All capital campaign funds have been dedicated to athletics facilities on the Uof M’s Park Avenue Campus. The plan calls for construction of a new men’s basketball practice and training facility, an indoor football practice complex and a softball clubhouse, which includes indoor batting areas. It will additionally fund comprehensive upgrades and renovations to existing facilities, such as FedExPark and the Hardin Family Sports Complex. The upgrades will include improvements in common-use facilities that benefit each of the Tigers 18 athletics programs. • Friday’s NCAA Tournament appearance was the fourth-straight time Memphis made the “Big Dance” in its inaugural season in a new league. • The Tigers also earned NCAA Tournament berths in their first seasons in Conference USA (1995-96), Great Midwest Conference (199192) and Metro Conference (1975-76). • The following shows the results of Memphis’ NCAA Tournament appearances in its new leagues: First Season In New League/First Postseason Conference/First Season Postseason/Result American Athletic/2013-14 NCAA/Third Round Conference USA/1995-96 NCAA/First Round Great Midwest/1991-92 NCAA/Elite Eight Metro/1975-76 NCAA/First Round Missouri Valley/1967-68 None/None Mississippi Valley/1927-28 No postseason
