SETTING THE SCENE • Memphis (1-1) returns to action Thursday, Nov. 27 in the bracketed portion of the 2014 Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. • The Tigers meet Baylor (4-0) in the semifinal round at the Orleans Arena. The game, to air on Fox Sports 1, is slated for an 11 p.m. (CT) tip. • The Tigers were not ranked in the second regular-season polls, but appeared in the Also Receiving Votes category of both polls. Memphis was No. 35 in the Associated Press poll and No. 49 in the USA Today coaches poll. The Bears also appeared in the Also Receiving Votes category of both polls this week (No. 37 AP/No. 34 coaches). • After dropping its season opener to Wichita State Nov. 18, Memphis bounced back with a 77-49 victory over Prairie View A&M Nov. 24. The game versus Prairie View A&M was the Tigers’ home opener at FedExForum. • Memphis fell to No. 11 Wichita State 71-56 in its season opener Nov. 18 in Sioux Falls, S.D. • Memphis played its lone exhibition game Nov. 12 and dropped a 74-70 overtime decision to Christian Brothers. The Tigers also played Saint Louis in a closed scrimmage Nov. 8. • Memphis returns two starters and only five letterwinners from last year’s squad. • Baylor opened 2014-15 with four-straight wins over McNeese State 80-39, South Carolina 6965, Prairie View A&M 60-45 and Stephen F. Austin 67-51.

The Tigers transitioned to The American from Conference USA in the summer of 2013. • In its inaugural season in The American, Memphis posted a 24-10 overall record and a 12-6 league mark. • The 20-win season was the program’s 14thstraight. • The Tigers earned an NCAA Tournament atlarge berth and advanced to the “Big Dance’s” third round. Memphis defeated George Washington in the second round, before falling to Virginia in the third round. • The postseason appearance was the Tigers’ 14th-straight. • Joe Jackson and Shaq Goodwin both were named to the All-American Athletic Conference second team. • Austin Nichols was named the league’s Rookie of the Year, and Michael Dixon Jr. was selected the conference’s Sixth Man of the Year. • Head coach Josh Pastner improved his overall record to 130-44. The 130 wins are the most by a Tigers head coach in the first five seasons. • The 130 wins also place Pastner in the No. 7 spot for most wins by a head coach in his first five seasons in NCAA Division I history. WHAT THE BEARS DID A YEAR AGO • Baylor posted a 26-12 overall record and a 9-9 Big 12 Conference mark in 2013-14. • The Bears finished sixth in the 2013-14 Big 12 Conference regular-season standings. • Baylor advanced to the Big 12 Conference Tournament championship game, where it fell to Iowa State. The Bears defeated TCU, Oklahoma and Texas on their way to the title game. • Baylor received an NCAA Tournament at-large bid and was the West Region’s No. 6 seed.

JOSH PASTNER Head Coach 131-45 Record 6th Year in 2014-15 • A Kingwood, Texas, native, Pastner was hired as the University of Memphis’ 17th head coach on Apr. 7, 2009. • Pastner has a record of 130-44 at Memphis in his four seasons, the most victories by a Tigers head coach in that span of time. • His 130 wins are the seventh-most by a head coach in the first five seasons in NCAA Division I history. • Last year, Pastner guided Memphis to a 24-10 overall record and a 12-6 American Athletic Conference mark. • In each of his five seasons, Pastner led the Tigers to a 20-win campaign and a postseason berth (2010 NIT; 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 NCAA) • Pastner served as an assistant coach for the Tigers in the 2008-09 season. • Prior to joining the Memphis basketball family, Pastner spent 12 years of his college basketball life at Arizona as a player, staff member and assistant coach. • While in Tucson, Pastner was a member of Wildcats squads that made 12-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and posted a 290-103 record (19972008). • Pastner was a player on the 1996-97 Arizona team that won the NCAA title.

Located just a few feet off Beale Street on historic Highway 61, FedExForum rises to extend the heart of the Memphis entertainment district. IT’S A BLOCK PARTY • For sophomore Austin Nichols, the Tigers’ Nov. 18 season opener was his own personal block party. • The 6-foot-8 forward blocked a game-high six shots versus the Shockers. • The six blocks were one shy of tying his career high of seven in last season’s home win over Temple (Feb. 22, 2014). • Nichols followed that performance with three blocks in the Tigers’ win over Prairie View A&M Nov. 24. • The multi-block performances against Wichita State and Prairie View A&M were his 13th and 14th multi-block games of his career. • The Collierville, Tenn., native now has 51 career blocked shots. DOUBLE-FIGURE COLLEGIATE DEBUTS • It was only their first NCAA Division I game, but junior college transfers Trahson Burrell and Avery Woodson put together solid performances against Wichita State Nov. 18. • Burrell scored 11 points on 5-of-7 FG and 1-of-2 FT. Lawson moves up to the collegiate level after a highly-successful high school career in the Bluff City. Lawson coached 11 seasons at Hamilton High School and led the WIldcats to a perfect 39-0 record and the Tennessee Class AAA state title in 2005-06. That squad is the last one from the city of Memphis to post an unbeaten season. Akujobi comes to Memphis from Houston Baptist, where he was the director of strength and conditioning for the entire Huskies athletics program. Akujobi primarily worked with the Houston Baptist men’s basketball squad from 2011-14.

TIGERS TAKE CANADIAN TOUR LAST SUMMER • In mid-August, Memphis went on a four-game, six-day exhibition tour to Canada. • The Tigers played four games in four nights and posted a 2-2 record. • Both of Memphis’ losses were to Carleton University, which had won 10 national crowns in 12 seasons. • The Tigers’ two wins came against the University of Ottawa and McGill University.
