SETTING THE SCENE • Memphis (13-7, 6-3 The American) steps outside conference play Saturday, Jan. 31 when it travels to Spokane, Wash., to meet No. 3/3 Gonzaga (21-1, 10-0 West Coast). • Saturday’s game, to air on ESPN2, is slated for a 9 p.m. (CT) tip from the McCarthey Athletic Center, the Bulldogs’ on-campus arena. • The Tigers were not ranked in the Jan. 26 polls and also did not appear in the Also Receiving Votes category of either poll. Gonzaga was ranked No. 3 in both polls. • Memphis has won 11 of its last 15 entering Saturday’s match-up with Gonzaga. • In that stretch, the Tigers’ 11 wins came over Bradley 73-45 Dec. 6, N.C. Central 81-47 Dec. 15, USC Upstate 83-73 Dec. 17, Oral Roberts 78-63 Dec. 20, Western Illinois 78-51 Dec. 23, Houston 73-54 Dec. 31 and 62-44 Jan. 11, Cincinnati 63-50 Jan. 15, UCF 99-79 Jan. 17, Tulane 57-55 Jan. 21 and East Carolina 70-58 Jan. 28. • The four losses in that 15-game span were to Oklahoma State 73-55 Dec. 13, Tulane 74-66 Jan. 3, SMU 73-59 Jan. 8 and Tulsa 73-55 Jan. 21. • Memphis returns two starters and only five letterwinners from last year’s squad. • Gonzaga has a 21-1 overall record and has won 14 straight. • The Bulldogs’ last — and only — setback was all the way back on Dec. 6, 2014, a narrow 6663 overtime loss at Arizona.
