Pastner, then a staff member at Arizona, lost to Sampson’s Sooners squad 8867 in the Sweet Sixteen. Oklahoma, the region’s No. 2 seed, advanced on to the Final Four.

PASTNER VS. THE HOMETOWN SCHOOLS • For the first time this season, Josh Pastner is facing a school from his hometown area when the Tigers host Houston Wednesday. • Pastner is a Kingwood, Texas, native, and Kingwood is a suburb of Houston. In fact, Pastner grew up around 20 miles from the University of Houston campus. • Pastner, who attended Kingwood High School, coached the Houston Hoops summer team during his high school and collegiate days. PASTNER RECORD VS. HOUSTON TEAMS • In his five seasons, Josh Pastner has faced three NCAA Division I schools from the city of Houston. • The Tigers have played Houston, Houston Baptist and Rice. • Memphis has an 8-4 record (.667 winning percentage) versus Houston area schools under Pastner. * Pastner has won five of his last six versus Houston-based schools. • The last time a Pastner-coached team lost to a school from Houston was last season. The Tigers dropped a 77-68 decision to the Cougars in Houston on Feb. 27, 2014. TIGERS-COUGARS CONNECTION • Memphis and Houston have a connection, and it’s through current Tigers assistant coach Robert Kirby. • Kirby joined head coach Josh Pastner’s staff in the summer of 2013, but one of his previous

coaching stints was at Houston from 1993-98. • During Kirby’s time at Houston, the Cougars transitioned from the Southwest Conference (SWC) to Conference USA after 1995-96. • In the their final season in the SWC in 1995-96, Kirby helped guide the Cougars to a 17-10 overall record and a 10-3 league mark. • The 17 overall wins were the most since 199293, and the 10 conference victories were the most since 1991-92. • In his five seasons in Houston, Kirby coached six all-league performers and two conference alldefensive team selections. FORMER TEAMMATES, NOW FOES MEET WEDNESDAY • For Memphis’ Avery Woodson and Houston’s Devonta Pollard, Wednesday’s game may seem a little weird. • Last season, Woodson and Pollard were teammates at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Miss. • Woodson was the Lions’ second-leading scorer (15.7 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (5.8 rpg). Pollard was the squad’s third-leading scorer (12.0 ppg) and top rebounder (6.4 rpg). • The tandem helped lead East Mississippi Community College to a 20-7 record. The Lions advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XXIII semifinal round. TIGERS LOVE THOSE LONG HOMESTANDS • The Tigers continue their nine-game homestand Wednesday when they host Houston at FedExForum. • Memphis wraps up this homestand with a Jan. 3 contest against Tulane. • In the first seven games of the homestand, the Tigers are 5-2 with wins over Bradley Dec. 6, N.C. Central Dec. 15, USC Upstate Dec. 17, Oral Roberts Dec. 20 and Western Illinois Dec. 23 and losses to Stephen F. Austin Dec. 2 and Oklahoma State Dec. 13. • The nine-game homestand is the longest since 1979-80 when the Tigers also played ninestraight home games in December and early January (Dec. 1, 1979-Jan. 3, 1980). Memphis posted a 7-2 record in that homestand. • The following are the longest Memphis homestands since 1974-75 and the Tigers’ record during those homestands:

MEMPHIS IN ITS 11TH SEASON AT FEDEXFORUM • The 2014-15 season is the 11th for the Tigers at FedExForum. • Memphis opened play at its current homecourt in the 2004-05 campaign. • The Tigers have a 183-23 record (.888 winning percentage) at FedExForum. • Against conference foes at FedExForum (regular-season only), Memphis has a 72-8 record (.900 winning percentage). TIGERS REACH 200 AT FEDEXFORUM • When Memphis took the court against Stephen F. Austin Dec. 2, it was the program’s 200th game played at FedExForum. • The Tigers’ current record at FedExForum is 182-23 (.888 winning percentage). CRASHING THE BOARDS • The Tigers’ focus in the off-season was on the defensive end, and one area of defense the team worked on was the glass — especially ending opponents’ possessions after one shot. • Memphis has shown what it learned in the early portion of 2014-15. • The Tigers lead the American Athletic Conference in rebound margin at +8.7. • Memphis leads the league in rebounding with a 40.2 average and is holding opponents to 31.5 rebounds per game (fourth-lowest in conference). • The Tigers also average 27.1 defensive rebounds per game, the second-best mark in the American Athletic Conference. BOARD BATTLE WEDNESDAY • It’s a good thing Memphis is a good rebounding team because Houston also hits the glass well. • The Tigers average a league-best 40.2 rebounds per game, and the Cougars are second in the conference at 40.0 boards per contest. • Houston leads the American Athletic Conference in offensive rebounds per game at 14.9. Memphis is second in that statistical category at 13.1.

LEARNING TO SHARE • With the Tigers having nine first-year players in 2014-15, the team is slowly trying to learn what has become a signature of Josh Pastner squads — sharing the ball. • And Memphis has seen the results of lessons learned from sharing the ball in recent games. • In the last six contests from Dec. 6-23, the Tigers averaged 15.7 assists per game. In its first five games, Memphis averaged only 10.0 assists per contest. • The Tigers also have moved up nearly 150 spots in the NCAA rankings for assists per game the past six contest. • Entering the Dec. 6 Bradley game, Memphis ranked No. 298 in the nation in assists per game. Now, the Tigers are ranked No. 154 in assists per contest. • In recent seasons, Memphis has been one of the top teams in assists per game, and the following shows that (along with this year’s current rank): Season Asst/Game 2014-15 12.7 2013-14 17.4 2012-13 16.8 2011-12 14.5 2010-11 14.6 2009-10 13.8 * through 11 games

NCAA Rank *154 4 5 55 54 112

HIGH DISHIN’ EQUALS MADE SHOTS • One of the main reasons Memphis head coach Josh Pastner loves high assists numbers: it leads to easier shots and more field goals made. • In each of his previous five seasons, Pastner’s squads have assisted on over 50 percent of the team’s field goals made, and the following shows that (also lists this season’s numbers after 10 games): Season 2014-15 2013-14 2012-13 2011-12 2010-11 2009-10

IT’S A NICHOLS’ BLOCK PARTY • For sophomore Austin Nichols, the early portion of the 2014-15 campaign has become his own personal block party. • After 11 games, the 6-foot-8 forward has 38 blocked shots, which is already nearing his blocks total from a season ago (42). • Nichols is ranked fourth in the nation in blocked shots at 3.45 swats per game. • His career blocked shots total is 80. • Nichols has recorded nine multi-block performances in the Tigers’ first 11 games.

GAME #12/AMERICAN OPENER: memphis vs. HOUSTON • page 8 • With his nine multi-block games this season, the Collierville, Tenn., native now has 21 career multi-block contests. • In the Tigers’ Dec. 20 win over Oral Roberts, Nichols blocked a career-best eight shots. • Nichols’ eight blocks are tied for the third-best, single-game performance in school history. • The last time a Tigers player blocked eight shots in a contest was D.J. Stephens in Memphis’ 5452 victory over Saint Mary’s in the 2013 NCAA Tournament second round. • The following tracks Nichols’ multi-block games this season: Nichols’ Multi-Block Games 2014-15 Opponent No. of Blks Oral Roberts................................................8^ USC Upstate................................................4 N.C. TIGERS’ BLOCK PARTY • Memphis threw a block party in its Dec. 20 win over Oral Roberts — as in a blocked shots party. • The Tigers tied a school record with 15 blocked shots in the 78-63 victory over the Golden Eagles. • In its history, Memphis blocked 15 shots on two previous occasions. • The last time the Tigers blocked 15 shots was in a 97-70 win over Jackson State Nov. 30, 2005. • The first time Memphis had 15 blocks in a game was in an 86-42 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Nov. 30, 1998. • For the season, the Tigers have 81 blocked shots for a 7.4 average. • Memphis is ranked fifth in the nation in blocked shots. TRACKING TIGERS DOUBLE-DOUBLES • Sophomore Nick King recorded the Tigers’ latest double-double with his 12-point, 10-rebound performance against Western Illinois Dec. 23. • King’s 10 boards were a career high. • The following tracks Memphis’ double-doubles this season: Player/Opponent Dbl-Dbl King/Western Illinois........................... 12-10^ Burrell/USC Upstate............................ 17^-12^ Nichols/Oklahoma State..................... 11-13^ Goodwin/Bradley................................ 15-12# ^ career high # tied career high
