ASSISTANT COACH NEIL CLAY Neil will begin his second year as assistant coach, after joining the team late, last year. A native of Hingham, Massachusetts, he attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he served as team captain and picked up both all-conference and all-state honors. 1985 MEMPHIS STATE SOCCER OUTLOOK Memphis State enjoyed its share of growing pains last season, and Coach Peter Bermel and the Memphis State Tigers hope to progress out of that stage into one of stability this year. Beginning their fourth year as an intercollegiate sport the team has managed to top the .500 mark the last two years, finishing with a 10-9-3 record last season. Coach Bermel welcomes back 13 lettermen from last year's team which finished second in the Metro Conference Tournament. The Tigers lost to Virginia Tech 2-1 in overtime as result of a penalty kick in the championship match. The most notable returnee is team captain Paulo Aur. Aur, who is the playmaker, will be depended upon for his leadership role. Paulo sustained a knee injury last year missing half of the season, but is 100?o healthy according to Coach Bermel. The big question for this year's team lies at the goalkeeper position. Junior, Erik Gilley, whose goal against average was 2.2 a game, including 140 saves underwent othroscopic surgery on his knee and looks questionable for the season. Filling that position will depend upon a couple of versatile players, and a crop of newcomers. Probably the most versatile player on the team is senior David Jackson, who will be counted on to contribute in several positions. Other top letterwinners expected to be starters are Kenny Heckman, and John Cooke. Heckman was a defensive specialist last year while Cooke was one of the top scorers with 22 points. Other returning starters include senior Micheal Mueller, juniors Mike Kauker, Pat Fischer, Scott Hauss, and Mickey Williams. Two sophomores that contributed to the success of the team whom are returning are forward Jimmy Holland, and midfielder David Tappan. The four newcomers, three from the Memphis area, include Christian Brothers College transfer, Ross Runs, sophomore Jeff Breslau, and freshmen Billy Salter, and Matt Price. Coach Bermel expects them all to immediately contribute. Each year the Tigers schedule gets tougher, and this year the same proves true. Memphis State will have 10 home games this year with such powers as Georgia State, Northeast Louisiana, and the University of Tennessee coming to town. Their road schedule will be a true test as the Tigers will face nationally ranked Alabama A & M, South Alabama, Appalachian State, and Vanderbiit. Then, to conclude the regular season, the Tigers will host the Metro Conference Tournament, November 9-10. Memphis State placed second in the tournament last year with Virginia Tech winning in overtime. Coach Bermel hopes again for a strong showing, and looks for Virginia Tech and Louisville to be top contenders for the title.
