HEAD COACH DIANE HALE Since taking over the Memphis State Volleyball helm in 1978, Diane Hale has averaged over 26 wins at MSU and has won more matches than any other coach in MSU history. The 32-year-old Hale had her best season ever in 1980 as the Lady Tigers posted a 41-17 mark with an appearance in the AIAW regional. A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Diane received her bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee in 1975. While an undergraduate, Diane played four years of intercollegiate volleyball and competed in the nationals in both her freshman and junior seasons. Upon graduation, Diane took over coaching duties at UT, while completing her master's degree. After one year, she moved north to Ames, Iowa as the head coach at Iowa State University in 1976 and 1977. Considered one of the top coaches in the nation, Diane is on the board of directors of the United States Volleyball Association's Delta Region. She is also the director of the Junior Olympic Development program in the Mid-South area, and serves as advisor with the Camp Development Committee in the United States. Because of Diane's affiliation with the USVBA, she has been a clinician for various National Camp Development Programs and was instrumental in the USVBA national being held at Memphis State University and the Millington Naval Base in 1983, as well as bringing the United States and Japanese national teams in exhibitions on several occasions. ASSISTANT COACH SANDY GARNER Sandy Garner, the only Lady Tiger volleyball player to have her jersey (#9) retired, is entering her fifth season as Memphis State's assistant volleyball coach. Formerly Sandy Monce, she was married in the summer of 1983, after completing her master's degree at MSU. During the summer, Sandy is also on staff as a clinician for various National Development Camps. Sandy lettered for four seasons at Memphis State, including three years under head coach Diane Hale, and was named to three all-state teams and was the MVP of the Metro Conference Tournament during her senior year. While at Memphis State, Sandy was one of a few players in the nation invited to try out for the United States Olympic National Team. In 1978, she was a member of the southern all-star team at the National Sports Festival and the MVP of the USVBA southern region, and later competed in the 1980 Florida Sunshine State Games. A versatile athlete, Sandy was also a high jumper on the Memphis State track and field team. Sandy was a 1977 graduate from Jefferson High School in her native Tampa, Florida, where she lettered in volleyball, basketball, and track. In volleyball, she was twice selected all-conference and all-county. Sandy and husband Don are expecting their first child this season.

1986 LADY TIGER OUTLOOK This year's team has the potential to be the finest team Coach Diane Hale has ever coached. With every starter returning, there will be no excuses for this Lady Tiger team which had a disappointing season last year finishing 15-19. Head Coach Diane Hale enters her ninth year at Memphis State, and is optimistic about this squad. "There is a lot of talent on this team. With the two new freshmen, and the players we already have, it should be a real dogfight this year for starting roles." Leading this talented group is senior Angie Glaub, last year's MVP, and recipient of the Elma Roane Award. Glaub led the team last year with her 391 kills, and has steadily been the Lady Tigers most improved player through the years. Two other seniors are the reason Memphis State should have a banner season. Peggy Rule, a setter-hitter led last year's team in attack percentage hitting .239%, and digs with 325 to her credit. The quickest player on the team, Rule makes up for her 5-6 height with her 28 inch vertical jump and her aggressive play. Mia Stephens is the other senior who was depended upon last year for her leadership. Stephens, a setter, finished the year with the highest setting percentage at .344%. Three juniors will play important roles this year, as two were starters on last year's club as sophomores. Kim Ehrhorn was the Lady Tigers threat at the net last year as the leaper led the team in blocks with 143. Chelle Penner should be both an offensive and defensive threat for Coach Hale, as she has improved every aspect of her game. Phyllis Richey has also continued to improve her game, and should add to the Lady Tiger defense, with her solid back court play. Three sophomores got their feet wet very early last season, as they were depended upon immediately to contribute. Nancy Wolter, started nearly every game as a freshman, picking up valuable experience. The 6-0 outside hitter also tallied 127 blocks, which was second on the squad. Shawna Mullins came back strong from an ankle injury which sidelined her for half of the season, to help offensively, while Lisa Eisenrich used her 6-2 height to help at the net, going on to pick up last year's "Most Improved" player award. Two signees round out this year's team that is full of depth and talent. Rhonda Kottke, a 6-0 middle blocker from New Hope, Minnesota has already distinguished herself as an offensive threat with her strong leaping ability. Clare Dirksen, is a 5-9 setter from Springfield, Illinois who has gotten plenty of pre-season praise and has the ability to immediately step in and run the offense. The Lady Tigers once again will play a tough Metro Conference schedule, intermixed with a tough non-conference collection of top twenty teams. Memphis State will once again host the Lady Tiger Classic and Memphis State Invitational, bringing in some of the top area teams.
