OUTLOOK
There is nothing better then to get off on the right foot. And, if last year's Lady Tiger record was any indication of the future of the MSU volleyball program, the skies the limit. In his first year at the helm, Lady Tiger head coach Jim Callender guided his troops to a 21-16 record, the team's first 20-win season since 1984 when they had the same record. The Lady Tigers also finished third in the Metro Conference, as well as capturing three tournament titles (WKU Coca Cola Classic, Houston Whataburger Classic, and the MSU Invitational). With the loss of only two starters, the Lady Tiger court crew should be ready for any challenge. "We return a good nucleus from last year's team," explained Callender. "Our freshman got a lot of playing experience, especially during the spring season when we won two USVBA tournaments." Nancy Wolter, the team's lone senior will lead the MSU women into action. Wolter, a 6-1 outside hitter-middle blocker led the team in blocks last season with 135. She owned the second best hitting percentage (.183). Wolter was named the squad's best offensive player as she owned a 2.44 kills per game average. She was also an all-Metro Conference selection. "Nancy is an excellent all-round player. We will depend on her to provide leadership both on and off the court," said Callender. Running the Lady Tiger's offense will be junior setter Clare Dirksen. An all-Metro Conference player, Dirksen had a .326 assist percentage. Dirksen possess a very deceiving serve which helped her have a team-high 94 service aces. "She (Dirksen) is a very important part of our team," explained Callender. "Not only does she run our offense, but she is an excellent blocker and defensive player." They say big things come in little packages. This statement holds true for 5-6 sophomore Kara Cronin. She was the team's top defensive player last season leading the squad with 391 digs. The setter-hitter had an assist percentage of .391. "Kara is one of the stronger passers on the team. She made the transition to the college game quickly, and has gained valuable playing experience. Her quickness defensively helps to ignite our offense," said Callender. Four other sophomores return to the Lady Tiger roster: Katherine Lehman, 5-11; Rhonda Kottke, 6-0; Sarah Tjelmeland, 6-0; and Marie Zwolinski, 5-10. All of these Lady Tigers play the outside hitter-middle blocker position, and each saw plenty of action during the spring season. Lehman was named the team's most unproved player. Kottke sat out the fall season due to a wrist injury. "Our young players got a lot of playing experience last year, and especially during the spring season which should prove beneficial this season," Callender said. Callender has beefed up his roster with three outstanding newcomers.

1988 OUTLOOK "I am expecting our incoming players to make an immediate contribution. They will provide more depth to the team at their respective positions," stated Callender. Jenny McCoy, a junior college All-American heads up the list. The 6-0 outside hitter was a 1987 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American selection. While playing at Miami Dade JuCo, McCoy led her 1986 squad to the national junior college championships. Diamond Bar, Calif., native Shavonda Morgan will team with Cronin as the Lady Tiger's California connection. Morgan, a 5-10 outside hitter-middle blocker was one of only 14 players in the nation to participate in the 1987 USA Elite Training Camp. Rounding out the list of newcomers is Kim Lemon, a 5-11 outside hitter-middle blocker from Brookfield, 111. Lemon was selected to the Chicago Tribune Top 20 team, as well as being named as one of the top 50 players in Illinois by the Chicago Sun Tunes. With the return of seven letter winners and an experience group of newcomers the Memphis State charges should be ready to take to the court. However, the Lady Tigers will face one of their toughest ever schedules. Included on the list of top rated opponents are nationally ranked Colorado State, Kentucky and Florida. Perm State and Florida State are all regionally ranked competitors. The Lady Tiger schedule includes appearances in four away tournaments: University of Missouri Tournament, University of Colorado Invitational, Penn State Classic and the South Florida Tournament. Callender's women will host two tournament. The first being the Memphis State/Graphic Systems Classic which features: Fresno State, New Mexico, Alabama-Birmingham, Toledo, Clemson, Valparaiso, and South Alabama). The Lady Tigers will close out the regular season hosting the Memphis State Invitational which highlights: St. Louis, Western Kentucky, Tulso, Northeast Louisiana and Western Illinois. "Our Memphis State/Graphic Systems Classic is one of the largest division one tournaments in the country. We have some top name teams competing in both of our tournaments," explained Callender. The 1988 Metro Conference Tournament will be hosted by defending Metro Conference champion Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. "Overall our schedule is a lot tougher than last season. We have to play both Florida State and Cincinnati on the road. These two teams will probably be the two toughest teams in the Metro. We will also meet-up with some top ranked teams in tournaments and in dual matches," explained Callender. For Callender and his Lady Tiger troop, the 1988 season will be another season to grow on. However, the Lady Tigers have only one way they plan on growing and that is Up.

THE METRO CONFERENCE The Metro Conference, originally called the Metro Six, was formed on June 13, 1975. Charter members included the University of Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, the University of Louisville, Memphis State University, St. Louis University and Tulane University. Recognition came quickly, due in large part to the excellent basketball traditions at each school. In unprecedented fashion, the Metro was awarded automatic qualification for the NCAA basketball tournament on September 22,1975. No other conference had become an immediate qualifier for this postseason event in its very first year of existance. Expansion was also on the horizon. League membership increased to seven as Florida State University was admitted on July 28,1976. Already renowned in basketball, the Metro bolstered its fall and spring sports calendars beginning in 1977. At the present, 12 league championships are decided. Men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, swimming, tennis and volleyball. / Following the 1977-78 season, Georgia Tech relinquished its Metro nfembership. Virginia Tech quickly filled the void and the Hokies made their presence felt immediately by winning the Metro basketball tournament in their first year. The Metro mystique came to fruition in 1979-80. Led by College/flayer of the Year Darrell Griffith, Louisville won the NCAA basketball championship with a 59-54 victory over UCLA. With this win, the Metro became ttyfrirst conference to capture a national title after only five years in existence. St. Louis University left the Metro on June 1, 1982, but la|ÂŁr that same month, the University of Southern Mississippi joined the league. South' Carolina's admission on April 14,1983 increased conference membership to eight schools. However, Tulane forfeited its membership when its basketball program was discontinued following the 1984-85 season. On August 5,1987, Ralph McFillen was named commissioner of the Metro Conference succeeding Steven J. Hatchell. Hatchell had served since 1983 when he replaced Larry Albus, the league's first commissioner. Under McFillen's direction, the Metro Conference continues to stress a commitment to excellence. The Metro News, the conference newspaper, is distributed 15 times per year. In addition, the Metro Conference Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association (MCSWBA), formed in July of 1984, assists in publicizing the league's accomplishments. The Metro Conference began sponsoring a women's volleyball championship in 1980. This championship event is held at each of the participating universities on a rotating bases. The seeding for the tournament is determined by the outcome of the regular season round robin. METRO CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT YEAR 1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987

THE UNIVERSITY
The roots of Memphis State date back to September 1:5,1912, with the establishment and opening of the West Tennessee State Normal School, which provided for the training of primary and secondary education teachers. However, the seed for the normal school's creation were sown three years earlier, in 1909, when the Tennessee General Assembly passed a General Education law calling for the establishment and maintenace of three normal schools, one located in each of the three grand divisions of the State. The eastern edge of Memphis became the site for the West Tennessee State Normal School, which in 1925 became the\West Tennessfee State Teachers College. In 1941, the College's curriculum in liberal aits was expanded, and the name was changed to Memphis State College, and institution serving three to four thousand students. The undergraduate program was reorganized into/three schools and a graduate school was added in 1951. On July 1, 1957, Memphis State achieved its status as a university, and has since expanded its degree programs to serve Vsuident population of over 20,000. When classes first met at West Tennessee Normal School in the autumn of 1912, athletics were an important part of activities offered to students. The football program was started and the team played two games during the 1912 season, tying the first, 0-0, and winning the final game of the season, 13-6. Since that time, working hand-in-hand, Memphis State University, and the athletic department have made great progress in growth and development. Tiger basketball was started in 1920 and in just 35 seasons was playing in the finals of the NIT in New York. From it's inception, basketball, as well as football, has been a success. During that inaugural basketball season, the Tigers posted 22 wins against just eight losses. Both the Tiger football and basketball teams have enjoyed more than 40-winning seasons since becoming a part of the Memphis State campus life. Following World War II, MSU reactivated the football and basketball programs and added baseball, track, golf, tennis and cross country. All have flourished since 1946 and have reached NCAA Division 1-A status. The women's athletic department, long since successful at Memphis State, was merged with the men's athletic department in 1980, giving MSU a well rounded athletic family. The goals of the University and the athletic department are one in the same: to continue the growth and development of student-athletes that is the tradition of Memphis State University.
