1989 Lady Tiger Volleyball Outlook Starting anew. After back-to-back 20-win seasons, the Memphis State Lady Tigers will have to start all over under the direction of first-year head coach Mike Lingenfelter. Lingenfelter arrived at MSU from the University of Cincinnati where his Lady Bearcats compiled a two-year record of 42-23. A solid foundation has been laid on which Lingenfelter can build. Back from last years' 24-18 team are seniors Clare Dirksen and Jenny McCoy. Dirksen, the team's offensive quarterback, earned All-Metro Conference honors last season. She is the Lady Tiger's all-time leading assist player with 3,975. Dirksen also ranks second on the MSU all-time service aces chart with 229. A junior college All-America, McCoy made an immediate impact with the Lady Tigers last season. A solid player, McCoy can block, hit and has a powerful jump serve that intimidates opponents. Four seasoned juniors (Rhonda Kottke, Katherine Lehman, Sarah Tjelmeland and Marie Zwolinski) will help bolster the Lady Tiger's game plan. Kottke, a 6-0 outside hitter/middle blocker, returned after missing the 1987 season with a broken wrist. A true competitor, Kottke led the Lady Tigers with 101 block assists. She ranked second in block solos with 32. Lehman's long hands enable her to dominate the net. She made 121 total blocks in 1988 (33 block solos and 88 block assists). Lehman had a kill percentage of .233, tops on the Lady Tiger statistical charts. An outstanding leaper, Tjelmeland gained ample playing experience as a sophomore. She had an outstanding spring season and is expected to be even a bigger factor this season. At 5-10, Zwolinski not only has excellent leaping ability, but has quick feet which helps the Lady Tigers' game plan defensively. Sophomore Kim Lemon saw sufficient playing time in her inaugural season at Memphis State. Lemon made major contributions to the Tigers' defensive effort. The twin towers, Lori and Lisa Rembe, two 6-3 sisters from Sioux City, Iowa, will be eligible for action after sitting out the 1988 season due to transferring from Bowling Green State. Freshman, Laura George, will help Dirksen run the offense. The 5-11 setter from Stockton, Calif., will have to make a quick transition as MSU will be without reserve setter Kara Cronin who incurred a season ending knee injury during the 1989 spring season.

1988 Year In Review It was a sunny day and the sky was clear. The distinct odor of diesel exhaust from a passenger bus filled the air. The Memphis State team bus was returning from the Metro Conference Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament which was held in Cincinnati, Ohio. With an eight hour bus trip ahead, the Lady Tigers were able to reminisce about the past season. Former Lady Tiger head coach Jim Callender had beefed up his roster for the 1988 season with three newcomers. Jenny McCoy, a junior college all-American transfer from Miami-Dade Community College, and two freshmen, middle blocker Shavonda Morgan, and Kim Lemon, a outside hitter-middle blocker. The first tournament the team competed in was the Missouri Invitational in which the MSU court crew placed second. Co-captain Clare Dirksen and sophomore Sarah Tjehneland earned all-tournament honors. Sophomore Rhonda Kottke had returned to the Lady Tiger roster after sitting out the 1987 season due to a wrist injury. Kottke led the squad to a third place finish at the Colorado Classic. In that tournament, Kottke had 28 kills and 20 digs in three matches, earning herself a spot on the all-tournament team. Another Lady Tiger sophomore, Kara Cronin, played outstanding during the MSU-Graphic Systems Classic, and was named to the all-tournament team. In that tournament the Lady Tigers finished third losing to second place finisher Fresno State and tournament champion New Mexico. The team's 15-14 mid-season record was somewhat of a disappointment for Callender. His troops were 6-3 on neutral courts and 7-3 in the MSU Field house. "The team made some mental mistakes and some serving errors that cost us some matches," Callender said. "I was expecting to have had a few more victories in the win column by mid-season, but we pulled together the last part of season." The team came back and won three of their next four matches including a thrilling five-game match against the University of Georgia. The confidence the team gained from the victory over Georgia carried into the team's final home tournament, the Memphis State-Baden Invitational. That tournament was the final home tournament not only for the Lady Tigers but also for lone senior Nancy Wolter. The Norwood, Minn., native had her best showing of the season during the tournament. She had a .363 kill percentage, dug up 53 balls, had 18 block assists and five service aces. Arriving in Cincinnati for the Metro Championships, the Lady Tigers were coming off a second place finish in the MSU-Baden Invitational. Prior to the start of the tournament, Dirksen and Kottke were named to the 1988 Metro Conference team. For her outstanding performance during the conference tournament, Dirksen earned Metro Conference all-tournament team honors. "It was a goal of mine at the beginning of the season to be an all-Metro selection. I could not have reached my goal without the help of my teammates," Dirksen said. After easily downing Louisville, 15-11, 15-1, 15-13, the Lady Tigers faced to top seeded Cincinnati. The MSU court crew saw their chances to reach the final round dwindle as the Lady Bearcats downed MSU, 15-6,15-3,9-15,15-13. "We fought hard at the Metro Tournament, and the team can be proud of the way they played. I think the team can feel proud of their accomplishments this season," explained Callender. The Lady Tigers ended the season 24-18, their second consecutive 20-win season. Going 1-1 at the Metro Championship Tournament, MSU placed third.

The University

The roots of Memphis State date back to September 15,1912, with the establishment and opening of the West Tennessee State Normal School, which provided for the training of primary and secondary education teachers. However, the seed for the normal school's creation were sown three years earlier, in 1909, when the Tennessee General Assembly passed a General Education law calling for the establishment and maintenace of three normal schools, one located in each of the three grand divisions of the State. The eastern edge of Memphis became the site for the West Tennessee State Normal School, which in 1925 became the West Tennessee State Teachers College. In 1941, the College's curriculum in liberal arts was expanded, and the name was changed to Memphis State College, and institution serving three to four thousand students. The undergraduate program was reorganized into three schools and a graduate school was added in 1951. On July 1, 1957, Memphis State achieved its status as a university, and has since expanded its degree programs to serve a student population of over 20,000. When classes first met at West Tennessee Normal School in the autumn of 1912, athletics were an important part of activities offered to students. The football program was started in 1912 and the basketball program was added in 1920. From their inception, both the basketball and football programs have been very successful. Following World War II, MSU reactivated the football and basketball programs, and added baseball, track, golf, tennis, volleyball, soccer and cross country. All have flourished since 1946 and have reached NCAA Division 1-A status. The women's athletic department, long since successful at Memphis State, was merged with the men's athletic department in 1980, giving MSU a well rounded athletic family. The goals of the University and the athletic department are one in the same: to continue the growth and development of student-athletes that is the tradition of Memphis State University.

Memphis State University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action University. It is committed to education of a non-racially identifiable student body.

Andrew "Ole Hickory" Jackson, one of the founders and later the seventh President of the United States, is generally credited with naming Memphis when it was established in 1819. Known as the "Cotton Capital of the World" and "The Hardwood Capital of the Nation", Memphis, now the 14th largest city in the U.S., has a rich heritage having lived under five flags: Spain, 1541; France, 1682; Great Britian, 1763; United States 1784; and the Confederacy, 1861-62. Today's Memphis presents a full spectrum of sports, visual and performing arts, and special events for its 997,705 citizens. Located in the heart of Mid-America, Memphis is accessible from all parts of the country. Memphis International Airport is served by ten major air carriers offering 300 flights daily. In addition, 12 excellent U.S. highways and Amtrak also serve the city.
