Head Soccer Coach Âť CHRIS BARTELS

^ /,

*ÂŁ*J

Third Year at Memphis State Career Record: 18-17-4 Graduate of Bowling Green State, 1973 Born: 7/19/51 in Teaneck, NJ Wife: Victoria Children: Teddy, 2; Ross, six months

Recognized as a proven teacher and leader of young people, Chris Battels enters his third season at the helm of the Memphis State University soccer program. He was named head coach on April 13,1988. Since taking the post at MSU, Bartels has molded a very young team into an aggressive group, and the team has responded by posting 18 wins in his first two seasons. However, for the soccer program, Bartels' third year could be one that earns the team national recognition. Bartels guided the Tigers to a 10-10-1 record, but the team exuded the type of spirit and enthusiasm that all Bartels-coached teams for which are known. He has also been given much credit for developing such great talent as Donal McDonagh, All-American Trevor Buckland, and scoring star Morten Akerfors. Bartels served as general manager of the expansion Memphis Storm of the American Indoor Soccer Association from June of 1986 to April of 1987, when he left to enter a private family business. Prior to joining the Storm, he had worked as the head coach and general manager of the AISA's Kalamazoo Kangaroos. A native of Oradell, New Jersey, Bartels attended River Dell High School before signing to play soccer with Bowling Green State University in 1969. In 1973, he received his BS degree in Journalism and Public Relations from BGSU. During the summer of his junior year, Bartels worked in the public relations department of the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. Following graduation, Bartels worked four years as assistant coach at Bowling Green State from June 1973 until June 1977, when he became player/coach with Athletes in Action team. He returned to Bowling Green State in August of 1980 as an assistant soccer coach and physical education instructor. While working as the Falcons' assistant coach, Bartels earned his master's degree in physical education. Bartels accepted a position as assistant coach and Player Personnel Director for the Memphis Americans of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1982. The 15-year veteran coach holds and "A" license from the United States Soccer Federation and has served as a member of the Southern Regional Olympic Development Staff.

1990 Outlook After the completion of the 1989 season, Memphis State University head soccer coach Chris Bartels took on the unenviable task of replacing three starting defenders and the number one goalkeeper. Bartels' prayers were answered with the arrivals of three defenders, sophomore Scott Spencer and freshmen Chad Middleton and Dan Devall. And in goal, Todd Scarpace has emerged as a prime candidate for the grueling job between the pipes, with highly-touted freshman Nathan Markway providing competition. "Clearly, our major problem this off-season was in the defense," said Bartels, who enters his third season at MSU. "We lost Trevor Buckland, Eddie Knight and Russ Gaither in the backfield, along with Troy Norwood in goal. I think this spring, we filled those voids and added much-needed depth in the mldfield and forward slots." Spencer, a transfer from San Francisco State, was instrumental in leading local White Station High School to the state championship in 1988. Also, sophomore returnee Volker Schumann will see extended duty at the stopper position in the defense for the Tigers. Schumann, a native of Bremen, West Germany, played forward, midfield, and in the defense last year due to the lack of depth on the team, which finished with a 10-10-1 record in 1989. "Volker did a great Job for us last year. He is consistent, smooth and very mature. He had to play a number of positions last year, and Super-Soph Volker Schumann must anchor played them all very hard and With a great ajery young defense at stopper this season attitude." Another bright spot for the Tigers in the backfield last year was Frank Pileggi. Pileggi came to Memphis State as a midfielder, but moved to the defense due to the lack of depth and did such a great job that he was named the team's Most Improved Player. Middleton and Devall join the Tiger team after successful careers in high school, Middleton at Center High School in Kansas City, and Devall at Catholic High in Memphis. Middleton set a school record with 19 assists last year in being named to the allstate team. Devall primarily played forward at Catholic, but will see time mainly in the defense this fall. In goal, Scarpace and Markway will compete for playing time. Scarpace was Norwood's backup last year, but after a summer of extended weight training that saw him gain about 15 pounds, he is ready for the number one job. Markway led Lindbergh High in St. Louis to four straight conference championships and will play an important role this season.

1990 Outlook "These two have worked very hard, and I will give the starting nod to whoever is going good at the time." Perhaps the deepest area of the team is in the midfield. Returning will be senior John Morris, juniors Pat Abbott, Jim Hink and Greg Locks and sophomores Rick Morris, John Arrandale and Patrice Lhommeau. Hink and Locks finished one-two on the team in assists last year, and the other five each found action in at least ten games in 1989. Joining them in the midfield will be freshman Jay Mehrhoff, a first team all-state selection at St. Louis' Lindbergh High. The forward positions are also strong with MSU all-time goal-scoring leader Morten Akerfors set for his senior season in blue and gray. Akerfors was the team's leading scorer as a junior with 11 goals and 24 points. And with eight more points, he will break Donal McDonagh's all-time record for career points. Gareth O'Sullivan will be the team's other starting forward come September. The Irish-born O'Sullivan finished his freshman year as the squad's second leading scorer with seven goals and 16 points. Also seeing playing time up front will be senior Rob Allen, who netted three goals last year, and freshmen David Norris and Tim McCage. "I am looking for continued good seasons from Akerfors, O'Sullivan and Jimmy Hink (who will also move to forward on occasion). We need more consistent scoring from the forwards this season, and I feel confident with how our forwards line up," said Bartels. Bartels is also hoping the difficulty of this year's schedule will test the maturity of a young squad. Memphis State plays host to two tournaments in the first two weeks of the season. Echles Field will be the host site for the inaugural Mayor's Cup Tournament that pits the three local college soccer teams, MSU, Christian Brothers and Rhodes, along with visiting Florida Institute of Technology. The Tigers will host the first annual Hotshot Soccer Tournament the following weekend, as Nicholls State, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Tulsa provide the competition. The 1990 schedule also sees tough opponents such as Wisconsin-Parkside, UNCCharlotte, Cincinnati, Evansville and Radford. "Overall, I am very pleased with how the team has gelled. In a very short time, these guys have progressed into a dedicated group, and I am looking forward to a successful season.

Chris Bartels' second year as head soccer coach at Memphis State had its ups and downs, but he contnued to mold a young team into a winner in the just the eighth season of NCAA play for the school. Bartels, though, had his work cut out for him. The team consisted of only two seniors and had 14 freshmen, and had to play a demanding schedule that would prove an advantage and disadvantage. In the season opener, the Tigers faced Arkansas-Little Rock at Echles Field. The team immediately showed its character by scoring the equalizer with under ten minutes left in regulation, and tallied the game-winner early in the overtime. After the UALR match, MSU set out for a two-day, two-game road trip to Bradley and Illinois State. Backed by excellent defense, the Tigers tied Bradley, 1 -1, but ran into a buzzsaw the next afternoon at ISU, taking a 5-1 loss after owning a 1-0 lead just before halftime. It was a tough pill to swallow, but the young Tigers did not have much time to dwell on the disappointing loss - perhaps a good sign since powerful Georgia State came to Memphis three days later. Avenging a 2-2 blood bath in Atlanta the year before, MSU came out determined to handle Georgia State. Handle they did, as the Tigers scored four first half goals en route to a 5-0 victory. However, the next six of seven games showed the inconsistency of the MSU front line, as the team recorded only 11 goals in those seven games - the Tigers coming out 3-4 in those 11 matches. Returning home 5-5-1, Memphis State hosted three consecutive games, all games they were favored to win. The Tigers did win two of three, but showed a weekness to create good scoring opportunities. In those three games alone, MSU blasted 53 shots, but only connected for five goals. The offense continued to sputter in the remaining schedule. In the three victories, Memphis State scored 12 times, but got shutout in its last four losses. In all, the Tiger team was shutout on five occasions. On offense, junior Morten Akerfors led the team with 11 goals and 24 points, while freshman Gareth O'Sullivan finished second with seven goals and 16 points. Player of the Year Trevor Buckland was named second team All-South, while defender Frank Pileggi was awarded the team's Most Improved Player honor. Despite jo-ming the ,eam ,atei Gareth O'Sullivan ranked second with seven goals and 16 points.

City of Memphis

29

Memphis on the Mississippi is named for the Egyptian city of the same name on the Nile. The name means "Place of good abode". Andrew "Old Hickory" Jackson, one of the founders and later the seventh President of the United States, is generally credited with naming Memphis when it was established in 1819. Known as the "Cotton Capital of the World" and "The Hardwood Capital of the Nation", Memphis, now the 14th largest city in the U.S., has a rich heritage having lived under five flags: Spain, 1541; France, 1682; Great Britain, 1763; United States, 1784; and the Confederacy, 1661-62. Today's Memphis presents a full spectrum of sports, visual and performing arts, and special events for its 997,705 citizens (the 1980 Census figure; 1989 estimates are around 1.5 million people for the metropolitan area). Located in the heart of Mid-America, Memphis, the 15th largest city in the United States, is accessible from all parts of the country. Memphis International Airport is served by ten major air carriers offering 300 flights daily. In addition, 12 excellent U.S. highways and Amtrak also serve the city. An all-new sports complex at the Mid-South Fairgrounds includes the home of Memphis State's football team, the 63,200-seat Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, and also the site of one of the top post-season football classics in America, the Liberty Bowl. The complex is also the site of the $4.7 million Mid-South Coliseum, an 11,200-seat arena which is the home of MSU's "nationally-known" basketball team. Also, Memphis will be the home for one of the most unique buildings In the world beginning in 1992. The Great American Pyramid arena is currently under construction and is the future home of the Memphis State basketball team. The structure will also house various stores, restaurants and museums. Memphis has become a national attraction in baseball as well. Suburban Millington serves as the official training site for the U.S. Olympic baseball team and this past summer was the host site for the 1989 American Legion World Series. Also, the Memphis Chicks, the Class-AA affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, make their home in "The Bluff City". Memphis has become a national mecca for golfers, with nine public and 11 private courses throughout the city. The annual Federal Express - St. Jude Memphis Classic golf tournament is held at the brand- new TPC Southwind course each summer. Fishing enthusiasts can catch bass, crappie and pan fish at one of the many lakes in the surrounding area. Memphis, where W.C. Handy gave birth to the Blues, is also the home of the late Elvis Presley and the Memphis Sound. The recording industry in this city has won acclaim from top-selling singers throughout the country.

Memphis State University

30

The roots of Memphis State date back to September 15, 1912, with the establishment and opening of the West Tennessee State Normal School, which provided for the training of primary and secondary education teachers. However, the seed for the normal school's creation were sown three years earlier, in 1909, when the Tennessee General Assembly passed a General Education law calling for the establishment and maintenance of three normal schools, one located in each of the three grand divisions of the State. The eastern edge of Memphis became the site for the West Tennessee State Normal School, which in 1925 became the West Tennessee State Teachers College. In 1941, the College's curriculum in liberal arts was expanded, and the name was changed to Memphis State College, an institution serving three to four thousand students. The undergraduate program was reorganized into three schools and a graduate school was added in 1951. On July 1,1957, Memphis State achieved its status as a university and has since expanded is degree programs to serve a student population of over 20,000. Athletic Director

33

Âť CHARLES CAVAGNARO Graduate of Memphis State, 1966 Recipient of 1985 Vanguard Club Achievement Award Serves on NCAA Council (Policy-making) Wife: Pat Children: Mrs. Tammy Rogers, Scarlett, Chip

For Charles Cavagnaro, the athletic director's job at Memphis State University is a natural extention of his life's work. The 48-year-old became MSU's director of athletics on November 1, 1982, after serving in several capacities with The Commercial Appeal. A life-long Memphian, Cavagnaro finds working with people and a chance to demonstrate his administrative stills two of the most rewarding aspects of his job. He has accomplished many things in his tenure at MSU. He has assembled one of the most respected coaching groups in the country, including football coach Chuck Stobart, basketball coach Larry Finch, baseball coach Bobby Kilpatrick, and soccer coach Chris Bartels, just to name a few. With a re-aligned staff, Cavagnaro spearheaded a season football ticket drive in 1985 which broke all previous marks at Memphis State. He also oversaw programs aimed at increasing attendance at MSU's home games. They were successful to say the least. MSU was second in the nation in 1985 attendance increase with an average of 36,700. He helped city and county officials lobby for the construction of the Great American Pyramid arena. Observers felt that Cavagnaro's influence and ideas were the catalyst for this project. Cavagnaro came to Memphis State from a position as assistant managing editor of The Commercial Appeal, Scripps-Howard's flagship newspaper and one of the largest and most respected papers in the South. Cavagnaro left the newspaper in 1970 to serve as general manager of the Memphis Pros, a charter member of the American Basketball Association. He was the youngest general manager, 30, at the time. Cavagnaro returned to The Commercial Appeal and worked in a series of newspaper management positions, including night metropolitan editor, executive sports editor, assistant managing editor, and assistant managing editorforthe metropolitan desk, a position he held until 1980. Cavagnaro's wife, Pat, is a real estate sales person and a member of the Million Dollar Sales Club. They have three children, Mrs. Tammy Rogers of Memphis, Scarlett, a graduate of MSU and the master teachers program, and Chip, a sophomore at Memphis State.

Athletic Academics

34

In 1987, Dr. Timothy Sumnerwho had been hired in 1986 to become the director of Athletic Academic Services, began planning for the construction of an athletic academic center. Athletic Facilities

The Tiger athletic family has many places they call home at Memphis State University. In 1970, the Memphis State Athletic Department officially opened the Kennedy Sportsplex, a 140-acre complex located just south of the main campus. The complex serves as the home of the Tiger football, baseball and track teams and offers workout facilities for all MSU sports. The main building at Kennedy Kennedy Complex on MSU's South Campus features a 50-yard, indoor practice field with an artificial surface. This field is used for workouts when the weather prohibits outdoor practices and is also used by the baseball team for winter workouts. Also housed in the main building is a modern, well equipped training room, a fully equipped weight training facility, the football equipment room, the football locker room, sauna and steam rooms and film and meeting rooms, as well as locker rooms for the baseball and track teams. Located behind the main building are four outdoor football fields, used for fall and spring practices. Adjacent to Kennedy's main building is Nat Buring Baseball Stadium, home of the Tiger baseball team. All of Memphis State's home baseball games are played at Nat Buring Field, a facility Nat Buring Baseball Stadium that seats 2,000 people. Located next to the baseball stadium is Kennedy Track, an eight-lane, polyurithan tartan surface track used by the Memphis State track teams for home meets. Other features of Kennedy Sportsplex include an Olympic (indoor) pool and a golf driving range that is used by the Tiger golf teams. The weight room at Kennedy Complex is currently 1,500 square-feet, but plans are in the works for a new 8,000 square-feet weight room. There are 8,500 pounds of free weights and dumb bells. As well, there are 44 pieces of Kennedy Complex training room equipment for the Tigers to train.
