1993 Season Preview

Head Coach Penny Lucas-White looks forward to the 1993 season.

Gone are the days of youthful Inexperience. A seasoned Memphis State Lady Tiger volleyball team will take the court in 1993. "Last year was a very difficult season for all of us," explained third-year head coach Penny Lucas-White. "Everyone came back in the spring with a new attitude and we had an excellent spring season. I believe we can accomplish anything we want if we put our minds to it." The 1992 Lady Tiger squad featured two juniors, three sophomores and four freshmen. All received ample playing time and have learned coach LucasWhite's system. Amy Greer and Sami Randolph, both seniors, will assume the leadership role for the 1993 squad. When Lucas-White talks about her two seniors she believes that they will carry the team. She also said that, "There comes a point in ones career, where the will to win is mind over matter. I think these two players really want to win." Greer, a 5-11, outside hitter, did not have the luxury to play that position last season. The Indianapolis, Ind., native, was called upon to set for the Lady Tigers last season. She led the squad with 737 assists and 43 service aces. Greer also ranked third in block assists with 52. "Amy did not play during the spring season because of shoulder surgery. This summer she worked in a warehouse and did a lot of lifting and said her shoulder was feeling great," Lucas-White said. Despite her 5-8 frame, Randolph plays both front and back row very effectively. She ranked second on the squad with 321 digs and fourth in kills with 197. "Sami loves the game and is always willing to play where we need her. She can pass or hit the ball and is even a good server," explained Lucas-White. The Junior class of the 1993 Lady Tigers is very

experienced. Renee Ross, a 5-9 outside hitter, was second-team All-Great Midwest Conference selection in 1992. During the conference championships last year, Ross set a new single game career kill mark with 25. For her efforts during that tournament, she earned All-Tournament honors. Ross led the squad with 335 kills and 382 digs. She also ranked third on the squad with 30 service aces. "Renee is a very powerful player who sometimes lacks finess. She is also the type of player you can count on when you need a good pass," White said. Cherilyn Bright, saw a lot of playing time last season. The 5-11 middle hitter played in all 36 matches last season and ranked third on the team with 244 kills. During the Great Midwest Championships, she had a career-high 22 kills versus Marquette. "Cherilyn is a very consistent hitter. She played extremely well during the conference championships and had a good spring season," said Lucas-White. A player that really made strides in 1992 wasjunior outside hitter Jamie Runkle. The 5-7, Peru, Ind., native earned all-toumament honors atTulane's Kathy Trosclair Memorial Tournament. Most of her playing time has been in the back row but Lucas-White expects to play Runkle in the front row more in 1993. "Jamie really turned the corner during the spring season. Despite her size, she can really jump. She is a big asset in the back row for us, but this spring she became invaluable up front," explained Lucas-White. The 1992 freshman class grew up quickly as they were called upon on numerous occasions. Monique Swaby, a 6-0 middle blocker earned Great Midwest All-Freshman team honors. She was the team's second leading hitter with 290 kills and led the

Senior Amy Greer will reassume her outside hitter position.

1993 Season Preview

Renee Ross earned second-team All-Great Midwest Conference.

squad with a .202 kill percentage. Swaby also was the Lady Tiger's top block assist player with 65. "I really wish I could play Monique outside because she can really hit the ball. However, because she is such a tough blocker Monique is invaluable for us in the middle," stated Lucas-White. Jacqueline Mack saw action in all 36 matches in 1992. The 5-11 middle blocker led the team with 13 block solos, and added 55 block assists which ranked second on the squad. Lucas-White said that, "Monique really turned the corner during the conference championships. She has worked on her strength and it really showed during the spring season." Janice Neyens, a 5-8 setter gained a lot of experience during the spring season. During the fall schedule, Neyens played a back-up position to Greer. She did however, rank second on the team with 533 assists. "Janice really came around in the spring season. She carried the weight of being the team setter and has become very stable and consistent in her role as the team's quarterback," Lucas-White explained. One player that became notable better over time was sophomore Deidre Rowell. The 5-10 outside/ middle hitter played outstanding during the conference tournament. "Deidre continued to improve in the spring and passes extremely well. She gives us everything that she has got," said Lucas-White. The Lady Tigers needed help in the middle and at the setter position in 1993 and that is exactly what they got with the addition of their three freshmen.

Heather Fletcher is a 6-0 middle/outside hitter from Richardson, Tex. She helped lead her 1992 L.V. Berkner High School squad to a 27-6 record and the championship of the Bi-District Area. That same squad was a semi-finalist at the State 5A Region II Tournament. Also playing in the middle will be Allwyn Fitzpatrick, 5-11. The Santa Barbara, Calif., native, was an AllCounty andfirst-team All-League selection while playing at San Marcos High School. She also earned second team All-GIF honors as she averaged eight kills per game. NikkiTaylor, a 5-8 setter from Rockford, Ohio, will play an important role at her position this fall. Taylor led her senior Parkway High School squad to the Sectional, District and Regional Championships. She was a first-team All-Conference and District Eight AilStar Division I, II, and III selection. She also earned second team All-Ohio Division III honors. "All of our newcomers come from excellent volleyball backgrounds. They have all played Junior Olympic volleyball this summer which will help prepare them for the upcoming season here at MSU," said Lucas-White. Memphis State will play numerous home matches including three tournaments (Tiger Invitational, Sept. 3-4, Graphic Systems Classic, Sept. 10-11 and the Nike Invitational, Oct. 1-2). The Lady Tigers will also face such top ranked teams as Florida, South Florida, George Washington and Arkansas State. The schedule also includes home and away matches with each conference team as well as Ole Miss.

Sophomore Monique Swaby was named to the Great Midwest All-Freshman team.

1992 Lady Tiger Review

1992 Lady Tiger Review

Lady Tiger head coach Penny Lucas-White regroups her team during a timeout.

Hope "Springs" eternal, at least for the 1992-93 Memphis State Lady Tigers. Despite a disappointing 1992 season, the Memphis State Lady Tigers had a very optimistic 1993 USVBA spring season, which head coach Penny Lucas-White hopes will continue in the fall of'93. MSU opened the 1992 season with a third place finish at the University of Alabama Crimson Tide Classic. At that tournament, junior Amy Greer and sophomore Renee Ross earned all-tournament team honors. The Lady Tigers lone win was at the expense of the host team, Alabama, 14-16, 15-11, 7-15, 15-13, 17-15. On Sept. 11-12, 1992, the Lady Tigers returned home for their only home tournament of the season, the Graphic Systems Classic. MSU won its first round match over Southeast Missouri State, 15-13,9-15,157, 15-2. However, in the championship match, the Lady Tigers faced fiesty Arkansas-Little Rock and fell hard, 7-15, 9-15, 14-16. The '92 season was long, not only in the number of matches, but in the number of miles the Lady Tigers traveled. Head coach Penny Lucas-White could manage to schedule only seven home matches and the Graphic Systems Classic. After that first home tournament, the Lady Tigers traveled to Texas where they won two of three matches. The North Texas match was a 3-1 victory, while they beat Southwestern Louisiana 3-0. The team's lone loss was to a tough University of Texas-Arlington squad, in five games. Three times during the 1992 season Memphis State played Arkansas State, and three times the Lady Tigers lost to the top rated Lady Indians. From Texas, Memphis State headed north to Syracuse, NY to participate in the University of Syracuse Invitational. The Lady Tigers could just not warm-up, as they finished fourth, losing to both Bowling Green State and Syracuse, 0-3. The Great Midwest regular season began on Oct. 2,

at home against the University of Cincinnati. For the first time, all six GMW schools would play a home and away schedule. The Lady Tigers got off to a good start with a 17-15,16-14, 15-8 win over the Lady Bearcats. From the cold north of New York, Memphis State traveled to the warmth of Louisiana to participate in the Northeast Louisiana Classic In Monroe, La. A lone win over the host squad found the Lady Tigers taking third place honors for the second time In '92. After that tournament, MSU faced five straight conference opponents, Including defending Great Midwest champion Alabama at Birmingham. The Lady Tigers could manage only one win in those five matches, a 15-7, 15-8, 15-9 win over Marquette. It was off to yet another tournament, the Kathy Trosclair Invitational, hosted by Tulane University. Once .again MSU finished third winning two of four matches (UT-Chattanooga, 3-1 and Samford, 3-1). Junior Sami Randolph and sophomore Jamie Runkle earned all-tournament honors. The win over Samford, Oct. 25, was the LadyTigers' last victory of the regular season. Memphis State closed out the regular season with 11 straight losses. While at the William & Mary Tournament, the Lady Tigers won two games in four matches. Memphis State completed the regular Great Midwest Conference season with a disappointing loss to Marquette, 9-15,4-15,8-15. Itwas the first time aMSU squad had lost to Marquette. At the Great Midwest Championships In Chicago, 111., Memphis State, 2-8 in conference action, would be seeded sixth. Lucas-White's troop faced Marquette in first round action. The team's regular season loss left a bad taste in its mouth and the Lady Tigers wanted revenge. In a hard fought battle, the LadyTigers came out a winner, 20-18, 7-15, 15-9, 15-11. Ross led the squad with a career-high 25 kills in the victory. Defending champion UAB was the LadyTigers next opponent. The Lady Blazers, a very senior oriented squad, were flustered by Memphis State, but came out victorious, 15-6, 12-15, 15-8, 15-6. It had been a long season for the Lady Tigers, finishing with a 10-26 record. For MSU, it was the first losing season since 1985 (15-19) and the most losses a Lady Tiger team had ever Incurred. Despite a bitter fall season, that youthful (no seniors) Lady Tiger team regrouped in the spring, and won numerous tournaments. The fall of '93 would be the year Memphis State would, "Storm Back To The Top."

THE GREAT MIDWEST Things like this are supposed to take time. But it didn't take much time for the Great Midwest Conference to make an impact on the national scene. In its first two seasons, the Great Midwest has met or exceeded all expectations for the nation's newest NCAA, Division I conference. Entering its third season, the conference looks to build on a strong foundation as it welcomes a seventh member, the University of Dayton, into league competition. The Great Midwest will also continue a tradition of postseason play with the addition of automatic bids to the conference champion in men's soccer, women's volleyball and women's basketball. Great Midwest teams have met with postseason success even without automatic qualifications. During the first year of competition, the Saint Louis men's soccer team and the Cincinnati men's basketball team made appearances in the national semifinals. They were among the eight teams and two individuals representing the Great Midwest in postseason tournaments in 1991-92. Last season, eight teams and four individuals competed in postseason action, including a return trip to the Elite Eight for the Cincinnati men's basketball team. Seven teams also made appearances in the national rankings of their respective sports. "Our first two years have been tremendous," Commissioner Mike Slive said. "I am pleased the NCAA has recognized the level of competition in the Great Midwest by granting us the automatic qualifications. The conference is committed to offering competitive opportunities in all our championship sports. Our automatic qualifications further enhance this commitment." The conference sponsors championships in 16 sports - volleyball, basketball, tennis, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, cross country for women along with soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis, rifle, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and cross country for the men. "This is more than a men's basketball conference," Slive said. "I'm very proud of the fact that we have been represented in postseason play in soccer, women's basketball, volleyball and men's tennis, as well as men's basketball." There has also been plenty of academic success. Nine conference athletes have earned GTE Academic Ail-American honors and several others have been honored on the district level. The Great Midwest is committed to academic success for its student athletes and maintains stringent guidelines regarding initial and continuing eligibility. Great Midwest institutions are more than athletic rivals. The league is developing an academic consortium Involving students, faculty, fellowships and research. The consortium includes a visiting lecture

series coinciding with athletic contests. The Great Midwest was formed in November, 1990, with six charter members: Alabama at Birmingham, Cincinnati, DePaul, Marquette, Memphis State and Saint Louis. Slive, formerly a Chicago-based attorney specializing in sports law, became commissioner in February, 1991. The conference includes Tim Stephens, Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations; Brenda Weare, Assistant Commissioner for Compliance and Championships; Sandra Biller, Assistant to the Commissioner for Administration; Erika Amstadt, Director of Communications; Bruce Mahon, Director of Finance and Information Systems; Linda Jepsen and Betty Driskell, Secretaries. Dave Phillips is the supervisor of men's basketball officials and Ray Piagentini is the supervisor of women's basketball officials.

Athletic Academics

The Athletic Academic Center

In 1987, Dr. Timothy Sumner who had been hired In 1986 to become the director of Athletic Academic Services began planning for the construction of an athletic academic center. Memphis State's new $90,000 Athletic Academic Services Center was opened in January of 1990. The 4,000-square-foot center serves about 260 athletes, trainers and managers on 16 Tiger athletic teams and is located in the MSU Field House. The facility contains: three tutor rooms, each eightperson capacity; two computer labs, outfitted with eight Zenith PCs and six Maclntoshs; three types of study area seating; 16 individually lighted study carrels;three counselor offices; check-in area; kitchen areafor staff and evening workers; director's suite with conference area, reception secretary area and assistant's offices. The Center for Athletic Academic Sevices is committed to assisting student-athletes in earning a college degree. The Center provides an atmosphere of personal attention and encouragement as well as tutorial assistance and academic support. The Center's services include advice in all aspects of the student's academic life - registration; study skills; degree planning; information regarding University programs and policies and procedures. The Center also offers advice and sponsors programs and

workshops to enhance the personal development of the student athlete. Information regarding NCAA rules and regulations are made available to the student athlete by the Center. Additionally, the Center monitors the student-athlete's progress toward his/her degree objective. The Academic Counselors are: Susan Irwin who is in charge ot monitoring, evaluating and counseling the baseball, men's golf and all Lady Tiger sports; Richard Jones is responsible for the soccer, men's track and tennis teams as well as all managers and trainers. He is also responsible for the "Tiger Key Program" of social, personal and professional training of all student athletes; and Gina Pickens who is responsible for the football and men's basketball student-athletes. The development of this unique and dynamic approach to assistance for student athletes has resulted in a steadily increasing academic performance, a dramatic rise in graduation rates, and a significant decrease in the time needed for the average student athlete to graduate. Over the past five years, the rapidly developing "Tiger" Athletic Academic Program has been recognized by many facets of the national media including: USAToday, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Sports Illustrated, and ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings.

Murphy Complex

Athletic Facilities

Murphy Complex Weight Room

Murphy Complex Training Room

The Tiger athletic family has many places to call home at Memphis State University. In 1970, the MemphisState Athletic Department officially opened the Kennedy Sportsplex, a 140-acre complex located just south of the main campus. The complex serves asthe home of the Tiger football, baseball, soccer and track teams and offers workout facilities for all MSU sports. Since that time, however, the facility has taken on a new name and is now called the Billy J. Murphy Complex. The complex was renamed in honor of former MSU head football coach and athletic director Billy J. Murphy. The main building at Murphy Complex features a 50yard, indoor practice field with an artificial surface. This field is used for workouts when the weather prohibits outdoor practices and is also used by the baseball team for winter workouts. Also housed in the main building is a modern, well-equipped training room, the football equipment room, the football lockerroom, sauna and steam rooms and film and meeting rooms, as well as lockerrooms for the baseball and track teams. Located behind the main building are four outdoor football fields, used for fall and spring practices. The new Billy J. Murphy WeightTraining Facility opened in January of 1993 and is now in use by all Memphis State student-athletes. The 10,500 square foot facility is one of the largest of its kind in the country and features the latest in strength traiining equipment The weight room is equipped with 26 Nautilus stationary machines and 18 Nautilus leverage machines. There are also 13 Hammer machines. Bear equipment and 18 Kelly Weight machines. In the free weight category, the new facility has 58 stations, Including 12 bench stations, six incline stations, four curl stations and four BNP (behind neck pulls) stations. Memphis on the Mississippi is named for the Egyptain city of the same name on the Nile. The name means "Place of good abode."
