MEMPHIS SOCCER PLAYERS TAKE PART IN YOUTH CLINIC During the off-season, both the men's and women's soccer teams conduct numerous clinics for Memphis area youth soccer programs.

This past May, Coach Bartels, Coach Szabo, and their respective players spent a Saturday afternoon conducting a camp for nearly 400 members of the Collierville Soccer Association. The three-hour clinic took place at the Powell Road Soccer Complex in Collierville, Tenn. The camp was broken down into several stations including ball control, passing and shooting. The CSA players, as well as some of the coaches, participated in the instructional drills. Campers from ages 5-14 came out to learn the game and have fun.

"It's nice to give back to the soccer community through working with these young players, said Bartels. "Maybe someday one of them will be a Tiger."

Following the clinic, the players and coaches stayed around and signed autographs for the clinic participants. The CSA players, the instructors and the parents all enjoyed the day's activities. THE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

SEASON PREVIEW

LADY TIGER SOCCER

LADY TIGER PROGRAM, SENIORS, READY FOR FOURTH SEASON ATTACK J—/ntering just their fourth season of NCAA Division I competition, the Lady Tiger soccer team has become one of the premier collegiate programs in the Mid-South. While their first three seasons have been impressive, there is a feeling in the Lady Tiger camp that the 1998 team may go even farther. One of the reasons for the excitement is the presence of the six seniors, five of which have played for the Lady Tigers since the team's inaugural season. Jodi Fisher, Christy Caswell, Jennifer Vossen, Frances Currin, LaVonne Hill, and Lindley Harrison have been the backbone of the program that has reached new heights every season. Fisher and Caswell have been the top offensive weapons for the Lady Tigers during the program's first three seasons. Fisher is Memphis' all-time leading goal-scorer and points-leader. A two-time all-Conference USA selection, Fisher led the Lady Tigers with nine goals last season. Caswell, meanwhile, is the Lady Tigers' all-time assists leader. She led the 1997 squad with eight assists and 24 points, and she earned second-team all-Conference USA honors for the second time in her career. Vossen has also played a major role in the Lady Tigers' success. The Maryland

Heights, Mo., native had an outstanding sophomore year. She tallied 10 goals and 28 points en route to earning second-team all-Conference USA honors. Last season, Vossen continued her playmaker role and finished as the team's fifth leading scorer. Of all the seniors, Currin has undoubtedly showed the most improvement during the team's first three years. The goalkeeper has put in hours of practice to improve her game. She has gained maturity, confidence, and has developed into one of the league's top goaltenders. The results on the field have been remarkable for Currin. In 1995, Currin had a 3.52 goals against average and no shutouts. In 1997, she recorded a 1.83 GAA and four shutouts. Hill has also made significant contributions to the Lady Tiger program during her career at Memphis. Her value is in her versatility: Hill has played and performed at almost every position on the field. She always brings a lot energy and enthusiasm into the game. Harrison may have only played one season so far at The University of Memphis, but she made an immediate impact on the Lady Tigers. The Rhodes transfer scored the game-winning goal in Memphis' first victory in 1997, a 1-0 shutout over UTChattanooga. She is part of the senior core that has made the women's soccer team a success in just three short years. And while the team's past accomplishments are noteworthy, the future looks even brighter. Memphis returns two juniors and seven sophomores from the 1997 squad. Perhaps the biggest reason for the excitement surrounding the 1998 season is the eight newcomers. They have the potential to be the best recruiting class ever for the Lady Tigers. Coaches Les Szabo and Pam Kalinoski placed an emphasis on local talent and recruited four of the top women's soccer players from the Memphis area. Add to that four other oustanding recruits from St. Louis, Chicago, and Canada, and the Lady Tigers' line-up is stacked with talent and depth at every position.

Lady Tiger senior Lindiey Harrison made immediate contributions after transferring to The U of M.

And the newcomers should expect to see a lot of playing time this season. "It will be a challenge integrating the new players with those returning," said Lady Tigers' head coach Les Szabo. "We have depth at every position and everyone will be competing for playing time. This will only enhance our level of play." Two of the newcomers in 1998 will be joining their older sisters on the Lady Tigers squad. Stephanie Vossen will be playing with her senior sister Jennifer, and Susannah Harrison will be teamed up with her senior sister Lindley. In addition, freshman Jennifer Thiele will have the support of her brother Philip, a sophomore defender for the Memphis men's soccer team. This talented Lady Tigers squad will be competing against some quality opponents in 1998. The non-conference schedule includes games against Oklahoma, Mississippi State, and Ole Miss. The balance of power in Conference USA makes every league game a challenge. And Memphis will get a look at two new conference opponents in 1998, Houston and Southern Miss. The Lady Tigers have become one the most dangerous teams in the Mid-South after just their first three seasons, and this season the expectations are even higher. The leadership and experience of the returning veterans combined with the talented young recruits should make 1998 another record setting season for the Lady Tigers.

THE HEAD COACH

LESSZABO HEAD COACH 4th Season-24-37-1 Cleveland State-1979

In just three short seasons, head coach Les Szabo has built the Lady Tiger soccer program into a winner, and Memphis has quickly become one of the top teams in the Mid-South. Each year, Szabo has added quality recruits to an already skilled roster, and each year the results on the field have significantly improved. After claiming five victories in the program's inaugural season, Szabo has guided the Lady Tiger's to an eight-win season in 1996 and an 11-win season in 1997. Szabo has made the Lady Tigers successful in a highly competitive Conference USA. In 1997, the Lady Tigers were one of six teams in the league to post a doubledigit win total. They battled eventual NCAA Tournament participant Cincinnati into overtime, they finished among the top four conference teams in goals, assists, and points, and they took the most shots of any team in the league. The 1996 season was highlighted by a 10-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin, a 2-1 win over SEC rival Tennessee and the Lady Tigers' first ever post-season win, a 5-1 triumph over DePaul in the Conference USA Tournament. In 1995, Szabo garnered five victories with a brand new program. The historic first win came at the expense of Arkansas-Little Rock, 7-1. Memphis also defeated crosstown rival Christian Brothers, 10-2. In his three seasons at The University of Memphis, Szabo has coached seven allconference performers, four all-conference freshmen and five conference Players of the Week.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

Szabo also stresses the importance of academics to his student-athletes. In the spring of 1998, 16 of the 21 women's soccer players posted a grade point average of 3.0 or better. The team's grade point average ranked second in the conference.

During the 1993-94 season, Szabo worked as the restricted earnings coach at Eastern Illinois University. While at EIU, he completed his Master's degree in sports management. From 1989-92, Szabo was the head coach of women's soccer at John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio. In just four short seasons, he took the JCU team from a new program to a second-place finish in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Szabo's career record at John Carroll was 25-35-1.

ASSISTANT COACHES

LADY TIGER SOCCER

PAM KALINOSKI ASSISTANT J_ am K a l i n o s k i joined the Memphis women's soccer staff as one of the most decorated women in NCAA soccer history. But the road to the top for Kalinoski started at the bottom - as a walk-on. The native of North Olmsted, Ohio was named a high school ail-American her senior year in 1986. Upon graduation, Kalinoski hoped to receive a scholarship from perennial soccer powerhouse North Carolina. Although the scholarship offer never came, Kalinoski still chose to walk on to the Lady Tarheel squad. Kalinoski quickly became one of the leaders on a team that went 89-0-5 during her playing career and won four consecutive NCAA titles. During that time, Kalinoski made a name for herself in the soccer community by earning a starting position in the North Carolina midfield and capturing Offensive Most Valuable Player honors at the 1991 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. As captain of the Lady Tarheels her senior season, Kalinoski set a perfect example for players to come by finishing her campaign as the NCAA's career assists leader. Her record was broken two years later by fellow teammate Mia Hamm.

COACH However, her name remains in the UNC record book in several categories. She is first in consecutive matches with an assist (12 matches between 10/13/91 to 11/24/91), second in career assists with 51 and second in most assists in a season with 28 in 1991. She continues to rank among the top 25 UNC career leaders in goals and points. Kalinoski also led the team off the field, where she was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll, the UNC Dean's List and the NCAA Freshman All-America team. In her three seasons as the Lady Tiger's assistant coach, Kalinoski has played a major role in the team's success. One of the lessons she consistently teaches her players is to be aggressive on offense. In 1997, the Lady Tigers were fourth in Conference USA in scoring and first in shots taken. Kalinoski joined the U of M staff after spending three years working in public relations in Sacramento, Calif. During her spare time, Kalinoski is actively involved in coaching Memphis-area youth teams and also provides specialized skill instruction at the annual U of M youth soccer camps which run for three weeks each June.

BROOKS MONAGHAN ASSISTANT -fter a brilliant three-year playing career at The University of Memphis, Brooks Monaghan begins his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Lady Tigers. As the primary goalkeeper coach, Monaghan has been a vital part of coach Les Szabo's staff during the program's first three seasons. Memphis' goals against average has dropped from 2.74 in 1995 to 1.67 in 1997. In addition, Lady Tiger goalkeepers recorded seven shutouts in 1997, three more than in their first two seasons combined. Monaghan was a three-year starter for the Tigers after transferring from the University of Evansville following his freshman season. A former prep standout for Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Monaghan returned to his hometown and became an immediate impact on the Tiger Soccer program. Monaghan's superb goaltending in 1992 led Memphis to a school-best 14-3-2 record and the co-championship of the Great Midwest Conference. Of the 14 wins the Tigers posted in 1992, 11 came via a Monaghan shutout, the largest single-season total

COACH

by a Tiger goalkeeper. Monaghan finished the 1992 season with an amazing goals against average of 0.80. In 1993, Monaghan helped lead the Tigers to the Great Midwest Conference Tournament crown and the team's first ever berth in the NCAA tournament. At Christian Brothers High School, Monaghan anchored a Purple Wave squad that won two Tennessee State championships. The goalkeeper received the highest accolade for a prep player when he was named a high school ail-American after his 1991 season. He was also a two-time all-state performer for David Deitrich atCBHS. Monaghan has continued to play soccer at the club and semiprofessional level, most recently with the New Orleans Gamblers oftheUSISL.

1998 SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

1998 SEASON PREVIEW

TIGER SOCCER

NEW LOOK TIGERS HUNGRY FOR SUCCESS A ans of The University of Memphis men's soccer team better have their rosters ready on Opening Night (see page 23). Fourteen players will be making their debuts in a Tiger uniform, the largest recruiting class ever for head coach Chris Bartels. Gone from last year's squad are seven seniors and eight starters, accounting for twothirds of the team's total 1997 offensive production. But Bartels has reloaded his roster with some talented recruits, and his major challenge is getting his players to gel together and play as a team. "We have a very young team this year and a very talented team," said Bartels. "A lot of these guys have played high school or club soccer together so the transition may be a bit smoother for them. Each one of them has come to Memphis to win and to play in the NCAA Tournament, and I think their hunger were translate into a successful season." Despite the numerous changes in the line-up, Bartels knows he has consistency at the ever-important goalkeeper position. Junior Brian Covey has started every match in goal since his freshman season, a span of 39 consecutive games. Last season, Covey made a conference second-best 99 saves in net, including a season-high 11 against eighth-ranked Portland. Robby Hagemann played strong in relief of Covey last season. The sophomore from Oklahoma City will be ready when called upon in 1998, as will Memphis product John Stoever.

The offensive production in 1998 will need to come from a variety of sources, but the Tigers are looking for junior forward Steven Brooks to continue his stellar play. Brooks was one of three Tigers to score 10 goals last season, tying him for fourth among Conference USA leaders. Also returning at forward is sophomore Tommy White, who scored two game-winning goals and recorded eight points. White's speed and quickness make him a dangerous offensive threat. Returning at midfield are two veterans, senior Matt Briggs and junior Joey Lewis. Briggs, 6-3, uses his size and aggressiveness to out-battle his opponent. Lewis is a sharp player who handles the ball well under pressure. While their playing styles are quite different, Briggs and Lewis will both need to fill a leadership role among a young Tiger team. Also returning at midfield is sophomore Nick Glaser, a 1997 Conference USA all-freshman team selection. Glaser started in 18 matches last season and registered five goals and five assists. Brandon Crossett, Jason Cutter, and Brad Miller will all compete for playing time in the Tiger midfield. The Tigers' defense will be anchored by 6-1 junior Philip Thiele. The Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, native had a very strong second half of the season last year, starting the final 12 matches. Also bolstering the Tiger backfield will be junior Brad Clark and sophomore Richard Keene, who are both coming off impressive spring workouts. And while these veterans will look to carry the load, the 14 newcomers will be asked to make an immediate impact. Ryan Schwaigert, David Medlock, and Taylor Stirling are all Memphis area products who are returning to their hometown after playing one year of collegiate soccer elsewhere. Schwaigert was a freshman starter for NCAA Tournament participant and nationally ranked and Bowling Green State, and

he can play both forward and defense. Medlock helped anchor the defensive unit for UMKC, and Stirling registered three goals and an assist for Belhaven College. Also joining the Tigers from the Memphis area are Stephen Lewis, Justin Stralka, Matt Letterman, Kyle Attarian and Jacob Lindquist. Brian Scalise of Chattanooga, Tenn., Darren Bevard of Kansas City, Mo, and Todd Gingrich of Roscoe, 111. will also be making their Tiger debuts this year. Bartels is also bringing in some talented international recruits. Liam McGrath, a central defender from Scotland, and Sean Fraser and Kenny Matsuba from Edmonton round out Bartels' largest recruiting class to date. Memphis once again faces a quality line-up of opponents in 1998. The non-conference schedule includes games against TJNLV, California-Santa Barbara, Western Illinois, and crosstown rival Christian Brothers University. The always demanding Conference USA schedule includes four teams that played in the 1997 NCAA Tournament, including Final Four participant Saint Louis. Memphis will see only two home matches in the month of September, but six of their final nine contests will be played at Echles Field. Bartels and the Tigers have several reasons to be optimistic about the 1998 season. A quality mix of players will join a solid nucleus of the returning veterans. If the team can find the right chemistry, Memphis Tigers' fans can throw away their rosters and replace it with a copy of the NCAA Tournament pairings. 1998 SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

TIGER SOCCER

CHRIS BARTELS HERD COACH In addition, the Tigers were nationally ranked for the first time in the program's history. On September 15, Soccer News ranked The University of Memphis 18th in the country. Memphis' success in 1997 is only the latest hen the Memphis Tigers defeated the DcPaul Blue Demons on November 4, 1997, head coach example of an overall winning trend. TIGER SOCCER

DESPITE RECORD OFFENSIVE NUMBERS TIGERS FALL SHORT OF SEASON GOAL

T j_ i

he Scoreboard at Echles Field was used often in 1997. The Tigers scored 57 goals, the largest single-season total in team history. Four times the Tigers netted at least five goals in a game, including a record 10goal outburst against Alabama A&M on Oct. 27. Memphis' success depended on their offensive production as they went 9-1 when scoring at least three goals in a game. But despite the onslaught on the record book, the Tigers were unable to reach their season goal, a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers began the 1997 season very impressively, going 4-1-1 in their first six matches. On Sept. 7, Memphis upset the eighth-ranked Portland Pilots 3-1 at Echles Field. It was the highest-ranked opponent that The University of Memphis had ever defeated. On Sept. 15, Soccer News ranked the Tigers 18th nationally, the first time Memphis had ever cracked the national polls. The Tigers ran into some tough luck in the middle of the season, winning only once over a seven-game span. However, a sixgame home stand at the end of the season saw the Tigers go 5-1 and outscore their opponents 28-8.

1997 HIGHLIGHTS: • The Tigers' 57 Goals, 49 assists, and 163 points were all single-season records. • Rogerio Lima, an all-conference and all-region performer, became the Tigers single-season and career assists leader. Memphis' 3-1 victory over #8 Portland was the highest ranked opponent the Tigers have ever defeated. The Tigers were ranked nationally for the first time ever on September 15th by Soccer News.

J

• Memphis had three 10-goal scorers for the first time in team history • The Tigers earned their 16th consecutive winning season at home.

Memphis finished the season with a 10-82 overall record, and 2-5-1 in Conference USA. The final numbers, however, may be more impressive than they appear. The five conference losses were all decided by one goal, and three of them came in overtime. The Tigers battled four nationally ranked opponents and six eventual NCAA Tournament participants, including Final Four participant Saint Louis. Memphis finished the season ranked 10th in the highly competitive Midwest Region.

Rogerio Lima was the Conference USA leader in goals, assists, points, and shots during the regular season last year.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

Seven seniors ended their collegiate playing careers in 1997, after making enormous contributions to the Tiger soccer program. After only two seasons with the Tigers, Rogerio Lima left his mark on the Tiger record book. He is tied for the all-time

27

record with 22 career assists, holds the single-season record of 12 assists and ranks second among single-season point leaders with 36 in 1997. Lima is one of two players in Tiger history to finish with over 20 career goals and 20 career assists. He is now playing for the Long Island Rough Riders of the A-Lcaguc. Other graduating seniors include Ramon and Rolando Aguillon, Kurt Clemence, Jason Dunn, Chris Morris and Jeremy Tutor. The Tigers finished the 1997 season as the Conference USA leader in goals (57) and points (163), ranked second in assists (49) and third in shots (299). Lima, a first-team all-conference selection, and Jeremy Tutor, a third-team all-conference selection, each finished among the top five league leaders in every offensive category. Goalkeeper Brian Covey recorded a league second-best 99 saves. Nick Glaser was named to the Conference USA all-freshman team.

TIM McCAGE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Tim McCage Memorial Scholarship is awarded to The University of Memphis' outstanding signee from the West Tennessee area. The scholarship is endowed by the McCage family and the Memphis soccer community and is named after Timothy Ireland McCage, a 1990 U of M signee who lost his life in an accident after his freshman season. While playing at The U of M, McCage competed in one match where he scored a goal and added an assist. In McCage's four-year Craigmont High School career, he scored 59 goals and assisted on 40 others in leading his teams to a 1990 Memphis City Championship and Tennessee State championships in 1986, '87 and '89. In his senior year he had outstanding matches against White Station and Raleigh-Egypt as he scored three and four goals, respectively. McCage also led his team to wins in the Germantown Invitational Tournament in Germantown, Tenn., and Lafayette Octoberfest Tournament in Lafayette, La.

Individual honors garnered by McCage included being named the first recipient of the Peter Cardosi Sportsmanship Award in the Germantown (Tenn.) Invitational. He was Craigmont's leading scorer, MVP and varsity captain three consecutive years. In addition to soccer, McCage lettered as a kicker for two years for the Chiefs football team, and he recorded 23 extra points and nine field goals. This year's recipient is Matthew Letterman of Memphis, Tenn. Letterman played varsity soccer for four years at Germantown High School where he earned all-region and all-state honors.

Tim McCage Memorial Scholarship Recipients 1991 - Matt Bailey, Craigmont High School 1992 - Justin Rose, White Station High School 1 993 - Brian Reddin, Christian Brothers High School 1994 - Joey Lewis, Houston High School 1998 - Matt Letterman, Germantown High School

THE PRESIDENT

Dr. V. Lane Rawlins President Brigham Young, 1963 Since becoming president of The University of Memphis in 1991, Dr. V. Lane Rawlins has instituted positive changes in the areas of academics, administration and student affairs at the University. Further, he has gained the support of leaders from business, campus, and community in charting The U of M's path forthe future. Under Dr. Rawlins' guidance, the University has put greater emphasis on innovative undergraduate education, on excellence in research and graduate education, on interpersonal communication and understanding, and on improving the internal workings of the University. Taskforces he appointed have created fresh approaches to diversity, public image, planning and budgeting, research and scholarship, enrollment management, technology, and undergraduate education. One of the most important - and certainly the most visible - of Dr. Rawlins1 accomplishments has been the $26.5 million, Ned R. McWherter Library, which houses more than one million bound volumes and state-of-theart computer facilities. But the president's activities have not been limited to the campus. He also represents the

THE UNIVERSITY Eighty-six years ago, The University of Memphis began as a small state teacher's college. Today, The U of M is a major center for learning and research. The University of Memphis' roots date back to 1912, when radio was young, motion pictures weresilentand William Howard Taft was in the White House. Named West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution's main purpose was to train and educate secondary-school teachers. Answering the need for a comprehensive school in the Mid-South, WTSNS expanded its curriculum. In 1941, the school's name changed to Memphis State College and in 1957, the college received university status and became Memphis State University. On July 1,1994, the name was changed to The University of Memphis. The U of M now has some 19,000 students and a physical plant comprising 1,160 acres on five different sites. The main campus lies in the center of a sprawling metropolis and combines the convenience of a large city with the atmosphere of a residential neighborhood. South Campus, which was once a veteran's hospital, is home to the Billy J. Murphy Sports Complex and student family housing. Students and faculty members can conduct environmental research at the Edward J. Meeman Biological Field Station, which encompasses more than 600 acres of forest, wetlands and fields some 25 miles from the campus. The University is guided by the principles of academic integrity, sound management and equal opportunity. With instruction, service and research as interdependent goals, the University commits its resources to the social, cultural and economic welfare of the region through partnerships with public and private organizations. The University of Memphis is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's, first professional, master's, educational specialist's and doctoral degrees.

The University of Memphis offers bachelor's degrees in 54 majors and 73 concentrations; master's degrees in 54 majors and doctoral degrees in 18 disciplines; one specialist degree and one professional degree. The University is composed of six colleges, the Graduate School, the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, the Loewenberg School of Nursing, and the School of Audiology and SpeechLanguage Pathology. The colleges are: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Communication and Fine Arts, the Fogelman College of Business and Economics, the College of Education, the Herff College of Engineering and the University College. Reflecting its commitment to high-quality teaching and national prominence in research, The University of Memphis has five Centers of Excellence and 24 Chairs of Excellence. The University has a full-time faculty of over 700. While the University's commitment to education remains its primary focus, the campus also offers a variety of organizations, clubs, honor societies and special-interest and service groups. There are many fraternities and sororities on campus as well as a number of other clubs. Theatrical and musical productions are performed on three stages at the Communication and Fine Arts Building. The University also has its own art museum.

"Clearly, R.C. Johnson is one of the premier athletic directors in the country," said University of Memphis President Dr. V. Lane Rawlins. "We were seeking an individual with people skills, as well as a deep caring about student-athletes and their futures. "We searched long and hard for someone whom we felt had the talents to fit The University of Memphis and the Memphis community, someone who was well respected in NCAA circles. We checked every resource that was available and feel that we could not have found a more qualified individual with a better record." He initiated the start of a capital campaign to add a new 8,000-square-foot football and basketball office complex to the current Athletic Office Building, a new basketball practice facility that will be located adjacent to the HPER Building on Echles Street and a complete renovation of the Murphy Athletic Complex on Memphis'south campus. The eight million dollar campaign is the largest fund raising effort in the history of Memphis athletics and should bring the Tiger athletic facilities on-line with Conference USA sister institutions as the school prepares to enter the 21st century. During the spring of 1997, Johnson negotiated the richest radio broadcast package in Tiger athletic history with WGKX-FM 106 in Memphis. The two-year agreement calls for KIX to pay the University S360,000 for football and men's basketball rights in 1997-98 and $325,000 for the 1998-99 seasons. In his short tenure, Johnson has created

the stadium is the "home of the Tigers." At Temple, Johnson was responsible for directing a program with more than 500 student-athletes in 20-men's and women's intercollegiate sports, including nationally visible programs in men's basketball and football. He was named Temple's director of athletics on May 9,1994, after a national search. The former Temple athletic director enjoys a reputation for building private and corporate support for intercollegiate athletics and for developing strong academic services for student-athletes. Highlights of his tenure at Temple include: the origination of a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee; the origination of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for student-athletes; the reorganization of the Athletic Department infrastructure; chairing the Atlantic 10 Conference Membership Committee and representing the Big East Conference on the Gender-

ADMINISTRATION director at Northern Iowa from 1974 to 1980. A former football coach himself, Johnson served as an assistant football coach at Mankato State University from 1968-74. He coached at Youngstown State University during the 1967 and '68 seasons. Prior to joining the staff at Youngstown State, Johnson served as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa for two years (1965-67) and the University of Iowa (1963-65). A native of Ottawa, IL, Johnson has his bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Iowa and a master's in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa. He is a member of the Football Issues Committee of the NCAA, the National Association of College Directors of Athletics, the Executive Committee of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association, the C-USA Representative on the Board of Directors of the AFCA, and he serves on the Finance, Nominating, Planning, Football Scheduling, and Expansion & Bowl Committees for Conference USA. He is also a member of the Shelby County Sports Authority. Johnson and his wife, Melba, have three children, Jeff, Paul, and Michelle, the wife of Charles Marsh, and a grandson, Luke.

Equity Task Force. Johnson was hired at Temple after nearly six years as director of athletics at Miami (Ohio) University. During his tenure at Miami University, Johnson was responsible for numerous programs that enhanced the stature and image of the Ohio institution. A strong believer in a quality education for student-athletes, Johnson emphasized academic integrity and excellence during his time at Miami University. At the time he departed for Temple, Miami University had 15 student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA, 62 student-athletes with a 3.50 or better GPA and 191 student-athletes with a 3.00 GPA or better. Before becoming athletic director at Miami University, Johnson was athletic director at Eastern Illinois from 1980-88. He was the associate athletic

CONFERENCE USA Comprised of 14 distinguished universities in 12 major television markets, the formation of Conference USA was considered by many a bold move. The union of 12 charter members was initially formed as a comprehensive Division I-A league and quickly capitalized on the strengths of its member institutions, building a strong foundation to make its mark on intercollegiate athletics heading into the 21st century. Conference USA (C-USA) includes founding members UAB, Cincinnati, DePaul, Houston, Louisville, Marquette, Memphis, UNC Charlotte, Saint Louis, South Florida, Southern Mississippi and Tulane, and football only members East Carolina and Army. CUSA member institutions span 13 states across the United States, more than any other Division I-A conference. The conference officially unveiled its name, logo and commissioner on April 24,1995 at Harry Caray's Restaurant in Chicago. Mike Slive was named the first commissioner of Conference USA by the presidents of the 12 institutions. Eleven of the institutions began athletic participation in 1995, while Houston joined competition in the fall of 1996. Conference USA added East Carolina (September, 1996) and the United States Military Academy (March, 1997) as football members. ECU began league competition in 1997, while Army begins play this fall. Conference USA sponsors 18 sports, including Division I-A football, which concluded its first season in 1996. The league sponsors championship competition in the following men's sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and track and field (indoor and outdoor). C-USA also sponsors the following women's sports: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field (indoor and outdoor), and volleyball. Rifle is a combined sport. The league's championship competition is enhanced by NCAA automatic bids to the C-USA tournament champion in volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's soccer and baseball. Conference USA concluded its second football season in 1997 ranked seventh among Division I-A conferences. Southern Miss, co-champion in 1996, won the title outright in 1997 and defeated Pittsburgh in the AXA/Equitable Liberty Bowl to finish No. 19 in the nation. Cincinnati received an at-large bid to the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho, where it defeated Big West champion Utah State. The league has a five-year football television contract with Fox Sports Net, which includes a conference game of the week, along with appearances on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC and CBS. Conference USA will become a full participating member of the College Football Bowl Alliance beginning with the 1998 season. This includes guaranteed access for the C-USA champion if that team receives a consensus ranking of six or higher, subject to certain conditions. C-USA will also receive a stipend for participation if one of its teams is not se-

ADMINISTRATION lected to play in one of the Alliance bowls. Additionally, UAB, a charter member of C-USA, will begin competition on the gridiron in 1999. C-USA schools will play six conference games through 1999. Conference USA is consistently rated as one of the top basketball leagues in the country. During the 199798 season, men's and women's basketball moved from three divisions to two. Cincinnati, DePaul, Louisville, Marquette, UNC Charlotte and Saint Louis comprise the American Division, while UAB, Houston, Memphis, South Florida, Southern Miss and Tulane make up the National Division. In its first three seasons, C-USA men's basketball produced 20 postseason teams (11 NCAA and nine NIT), including two teams that reached the final eight of the NCAA Tournament and one that advanced to the final four of the NIT. The conference just completed the third year of a six-year basketball television agreement with ESPN Regional Television (formerly Creative Sports) and ESPN. Women's basketball has also enjoyed success the past three seasons. Four C-USA schools received NCAA Tournament bids in 1998, giving the league 13 bids in its first three campaigns. For each of the past two seasons, Conference USA has produced five teams that have won more 20 or more games. Women's basketball, along with volleyball, soccer and baseball, enjoy significant television exposure on Fox Sports Net and ESPN. Other C-USA accomplishments during the league's first three seasons include: seven NCAA volleyball appearances, with Louisville reaching the Sweet Sixteen in 1996: seven NCAA men's soccer appearances, with two teams reaching the NCAA Final Four - Saint Louis in 1997 and UNC Charlotte's 1996 team becoming the first C-USA school to reach an NCAA Final Four; one team in the NCAA women's soccer tournament, four teams in the NCAA Baseball Championship and several NCAA individual and team competitors in golf, tennis and track and field. Conference USA student-athletes are champions on and off the playing fields. In 1997, nine student-athletes earned national GTE Academic AllAmerica Honors, while 19 were named All-District. Over the past two seasons, more than 1,300 studentathletes have been named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll or received the Commissioner's Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom. The conference annually awards six postgraduate scholarships, along with the SportAcademic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award. The Presidents of the 14 member institutions serve as Conference USA's Board of Directors.

II OfMFIGHT SONG

When the University of Memphis first fielded a football team in the fall of 1912, no one had selected a nickname for the squad. Early references to the football team, tabbed them only as the Blue and Gray Warriors of West Tennessee Normal School. After the final game of the 1914 season, there was a student parade. During this event, several Normal students shouted, "We fight like Tigers." The nickname was born. More and more the nickname "Tigers" was used, particularly in campus publications. But it did not catch on with the newspapers downtown. They continued to use "Normals" or the "Blue and Gray" when referring to the University. Under coach Lester Barnard in 1922, Normal's football team gave a ring of truth to that old student yell about Tigers. The team adopted a motto - "Every Man A Tiger" and went on to score 174 points while allowing their opponents just 29 points. In the late 1920s, student publications and downtown newspapers began referring to the football team as the "Teachers" or "Tutors". The Tiger nickname would return. But not until 1939 was it finally adopted as the official nickname for the University of Memphis.

The student body thought that by picking the colors of the North and the South, the school would show a togetherness among all students.
