Memphis returns to the Bluff City for a seven-game homestand beginning Saturday, March 12 with a doubleheader against St. Peter’s. Memphis In Tournament Play The U of M hosts a tournament at FedExPark for the first time in the two-year history of the facility. The last time the U of M hosted a tournament was the 2007 AutoZone Classic at AutoZone Park. In the AutoZone Classic in 2007, Memphis finished 3-0 with wins over Northern Iowa, Indiana and Eastern Illinois. The Tigers are 9-5 under head coach Daron Schoenrock in regular season tournaments. The last tournament that Memphis played in was the 2010 USA College Classic at USA Stadium in Millington and Memphis went 1-2 in the tournament. Langfield Named Pitcher Of The Week Tiger sophomore pitcher Dan Langfield was named C-USA Pitcher of the Week on Monday by the league office. Langfield posted the second-highest strikeout total in C-USA and Memphis single-game history in 7.2 IP at Kennesaw State on Friday. Langfield is the 18th Tiger pitcher to earn the recognition from C-USA and is the sixth pitcher to collect the honor since the 2009 season. Nice To Meet You Memphis is set to play Oral Roberts and Eastern Kentucky for the first time in program history. The Tigers meet the two squads for the first time and this season Memphis is 2-1 against teams it has played for the first time. Last weekend, Memphis squared off with Kennesaw State for the first time in program history and won two out of three in the three-game set. Memphis will face two more opponents (St. Peter’s and Alcorn State) for the first time later this season.

The SIU/Memphis Series Southern Illinois holds a 14-8 advantage in the all-time series with Memphis, but Sunday’s match-up will be the first game since the 1984 season that pits the Tigers and Salukis. Southern Illinois won the last meeting 5-3. Dating back to the 1982 season, Memphis has won three of the last four in the series after Southern Illinois had taken eight-straight in the series from the 1970-72 seasons. Top-10 Chase Drew Martinez, Adam McClain, Jacob Wilson and Chad Zurcher are quickly approaching top10 marks in Tiger baseball history. With 173 career hits, Zurcher needs just 14 base hits to crack the program’s top 10, while Martinez is 15 hits shy of the top-10 list.

On The Clock With the new bats this year in college baseball, one trend to follow this season is length of game. Memphis averages a game duration of 2:54 this season through the first seven games. After seven games in the 2010 season, game times averaged 3:12. Memphis has played three games lasting over three hours and the shortest game has been played in 2:24 at Ole Miss on Feb. 22. Home Cookin’ Starting Friday, Memphis will play eight of its next 10 games at FedExPark. The Tigers play 12 games in the Bluff City in March, including the March 23 match-up with Arkansas at AutoZone Park. Since head coach Daron Schoenrock was named skipper in 2006, Memphis is 35-21 in the month of March in the Bluff City. The 12 games at home in March are second-most Memphis has played under Schoenrock with the most being 13 in the 2008 season. New Bat Standard Effects Hitting The new bats were expected to have an impact on hitting throught college baseball and in Conference USA, hitting is down by nearly 12 percent per game. Home runs per game are down nearly 40 percent from last season. The percentages are based on the first 10 days of competition this season versus last season. Memphis Out To Hot Start At The Dish Although college baseball switched to the new BBCOR bats, the Memphis offense has not shown any signs of trouble. With hitting down nearly 12 percent throughout C-USA, Memphis has four more hits than it did after seven games last season. The Tigers are also plus four with six home runs in the first seven games. Memphis has posted the most dominant stat with a plus 26 differential in runs scored with 59 in seven games. At this point last season, Memphis had plated 33 runs. The Tigers have scored double-digit runs in three out of seven games and pounded out double-dighit hits in four of the seven games. Rung Up Tiger sophomore pitcher Dan Langfield approached Memphis’ single-game record for strikeouts in a game by fanning 16 batters at Kennesaw State on Feb. 25. Langfield finished with the second-most strikeouts in any game in C-USA history and U of M baseball history. Milestone Victory Now in his seventh year at the helm of the Memphis baseball program, head coach Daron Schoenrock claimed his milestone 150th win as the Tigers’ skipper on Feb. 20th against Evansville . Schoenrock is five wins shy of surpassing the late Al Brown at No. 3 on Memphis’s all-time coaching wins ledger. Schoenrock needs only 23 more wins to reach a 200th career victory.

Walking In Memphis Memphis has taken 39 walks over the course of the first seven games and leads C-USA heading into week three of the season. Rick Russell (8) is tied for first in the league in walks and Drew Martinez and Eli Hynes have taken the free base six times and are tied for seventh among C-USA leaders. Paullus Nails ‘Em Down Tiger closer Ben Paullus recorded his second save of the season in the 5-4 series opening win at Kennesaw State last Friday. Paullus struck out one batter and had the four-out save for his second career save. 1-2 Punch The Tiger duo of Drew Martinez and Chad Zurcher are back in form after leading the Tigers to its first Conference USA Tournament appearance since 2007. Both players were honored as 2011 Preseason All-C-USA performers. The Tigers All-C-USA tandem, which combined for 190 hits, 113 runs, 39 stolen bases and a .388 batting average in 2010, picked up where they left off, batting .455, with 25 hits and 19 runs scored in the first seven games. The duo has claimed nine steals in the first four games on the base paths.

Two-Bagger Junior third baseman Jacob Wilson set a personal-best on Feb. 20 against Evansville, legging out three doubles to lead Memphis to an 8-4 win. Wilson’s previous career-best was two doubles, which he accomplished five times. Wilson drove in Memphis’ two runs against Ole Miss with a two-RBI double. The Bartlett, Tenn., native now has 37 career doubles and is one shy of cracking the program’s top-10 list. Please Don’t Hit Me!! Tiger shortstop Chad Zurcher has been plunked seven times in the first seven games of the season. The junior was hit twice on Feb. 19 versus Evansville and twice more on Feb. 20 versus the Purple Aces. Zurcher has now been hit by a pitch 32 times in his career at Memphis. He was plunked a career-high 13 times in 2010. That figure bested the 10 times he reached via the hit-by-pitch in 2008. Curtain Call Debut With his first-inning grand slam against Evansville on Feb. 19, Eli Hynes became the first Tiger to homer on the first pitch of his first U of M atbat since Joey Lieberman did so in 2006. Hynes’ blast gave Memphis the lead for good at 4-1. Lieberman’s line shot on the first pitch of his first Memphis at-bat gave the Tigers a 7-6 10-inning win over Notre Dame.

Chap Is Back Senior catcher Phillip Chapman showed no illeffects of the season-ending forearm injury he suffered in the final series of the 2010 regular season. In his first action since the injury, the Clinton, Miss., native led Memphis with three hits and four RBI against Evansville on Feb. 19 and came back for three more hits in game two of the series. Chapman leads the club with a .615 batting average to go with 14 total bases, eight hits and five RBI.

Grand Debut Eli Hynes wasn’t the only Tiger making noise in their U of M debut against Evansville on Feb. 19. Freshman Bryan Picou went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Picou drove the first pitch he saw to left field for and RBI-double in the first inning. He added an RBI-single in the fourth. Fellow freshman Sam Moll fanned the first batter he faced in an inning of relief on Feb. 21 against Evansville.

Bases Loaded...Bases Unloaded Memphis has launched two grand slam home runs in the first two weeks of the season. Eli Hynes took the first pitch he saw in his U of M career to deep right field at FedExPark for a grand slam homer in game one of the season. More recently, Jacob Wilson drove a grand slam to right center field at Kennesaw State for a grand slam. Although Memphis has two grand slams, the Tigers are batting just .214 (3-14) this season when the bases are loaded.

Fast Starters Memphis has proven to be just that after the first series of the season. The Tigers struck for 13 runs in the first inning during the three-game series with Evansville to open the season. Memphis collected 13 hits in the opening frame, including pounding out five hits in the first inning of the Feb. 19 season-opener. When the Tigers plate a first inning run this season, Memphis is 4-0. Here’s a look at Memphis’ first-inning production.

Slick Fielding With an experienced club on the diamond, Memphis has committed three errors this season, the least through seven games in head coach Daron Schoenrock’s tenure at the U of M. The 2007 squad had committed the fewest errors in seveen games under Schoenrock with nine.

Tough Schedule The Tigers 2011 schedule is one of the most challenging slates since head coach Daron Schoenrock’s arrival in 2005. This year’s schedule features 29 matchups against 12 teams that posted 30 or more wins a year ago and seven tilts versus 40-win programs (Arkansas, Auburn and Rice). Memphis will play 13 games against 2010 NCAA Tournament teams, seven of which will be played at home. Tigers Sweep Evansville The 3-0 start is the 20th time a Memphis team has started the season with three-straight wins. It is the second such start under head coach Daron Schoenrock and the program’s first since 2006. Memphis opened the 2006 season with wins over Alabama (2-0 at Alabama) and Oklahoma (2-1 in the Service Academies Classic). The Tigers finished 32-28 that year. No team to start out 3-0 has ever finished below .500. The Tigers outscored the Purple Aces 38-19 and hit .448 as a team on the weekend. The 38 runs scored is the most in a 3-0 start since 1991, when Memphis plated a combined 40 runs in wins over Harding, Missouri-St. Louis and Arkansas State.

Experience Matters After being the less-experienced club for the last two seasons, the Tigers have turned the tables and will now boast one of the league’s most experienced rosters in 2011. Memphis position players have a combined 688 games and 633 starts under their belts. They have produced over 750 hits in just over 2,200 official at-bats. The Tigers also have experience on the mound. The squad’s seven returning pitchers have amassed 324 strikeouts in 371 innings of work. The crew has made 160 appearances and 44 starts, collectively. Double Duty Not only do the Tigers excel on the field, but they excel in the classroom as well. The team recorded a program-best 3.278 GPA in the fall 2010 semester. All In The Family This year’s edition of Tiger baseball showcases a unique twist for head coach Daron Schoenrock. This roster features a second Schoenrock, as Daron’s son Erik is a freshman left-handed pitcher on the 2011 squad. A Taste Of Memphis The 2011 Memphis roster features a wealth of home-grown talent. Of the 32 players on the club, 17 are from the Memphis area.
