Tigers Host Houston to Conclude FiveGame Home Stand After taking two of three from defending champion East Carolina and sweepting a midweek home doubleheader with Mississippi Valley State, Memphis will look to continue their climb in Conference USA. The weekend series is a big one, with perennial C-USA power Houston coming to Memphis for the Tigers’ conference home opener. The Cougars fell out of the national rankings after getting swept in their conferenceopening series, at home, against UAB and have lost six straight. Houston swept Memphis in Houston last year. The last time the Tigers hosted the Cougars, Memphis swept the three-game series in 2009. Junior catcher Nikki Moreno was named the C-USA Player of the Week after the sweep. Live Coverage All three games Memphis will play against Houston can be followed through live stats provided by CBS College Sports GameTracker. Live chat provided by Memphis Media Relations will also be available for each game. Links to the live chat and GameTracker can be found at GoTigersGo. com. All-Access video coverage can be found at gotigersgo.com On Deck No mid-week match-ups for Memphis next week, with a trip to El Paso, Texas looming. The Tigers will head to UTEP for a three-game series, with a doubleheader looming March 26 and the series finale on Sunday, March 27. Valle Named C-USA Pitcher of the Week Memphis senior Janelle Valle went 1-0 with a save in three appearances to help Memphis win two of three at defending C-USA Champions, East Carolina, to open conference play. Valle allowed no runs and just one hit in 10 innings of work with six strikeouts. The Lake Elsinore, Calif., native earned the start in game three and out dueled C-USA Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Toni Paisley, throwing a complete-game, one hitter in a 1-0 victory. It is her first career complete-game one hitter and her second shutout of the season

Pitching Dominates Mississippi Valley State in Doubleheader Sweep Carly Hummel threw a five-inning no hitter in an 8-0 game one victory leading Memphis to a pair of shutouts in a doubleheader sweep over Mississippi Valley State. The Tigers won game two 2-0 over the Delta Devils in a combined shutout by freshman Ellen Roberts and senior Lauren Carley. Hummel picked up her second no hitter of the season and first since throwing one to open the 2011 season against North Florida. It is the seventh no hitter in school history. The Bakersfield, Calif., native allowed just one base runner in the game, a two-out walk in the fourth inning, and struck out seven. Jessica Phillips blasted two home runs in the opening game, including a three-run shot to center that led to a five-run fifth inning. The junior first baseman finished 2-for-3 in the game with four RBI and leads the team with six home runs on the year. It is her second two homer game of the season and third in her career. Double Dingers Jessica Phillips went yard twice in a game for the second time this season when she hit two homers in game one against Mississippi Valley State. Phillips also hit a pair of homers in the opening week against DePaul. The junior has gone yard twice in a game three times in her career. She first performed the feat last season against Wichita State. Tigers Take Road Series from Defending Champs to Kick Off 2011 C-USA Schedule Memphis took two of three contests from East Carolina in their season-opening conference series, besting the defending C-USA champions twice in their new stadium. After losing the series opener, 4-1, Memphis rebounded with a hardfought game two win, 2-1. Lauren Carley pitched six innings for the win, while Janelle Valle picked up her third career save. In the Sunday rubber match, Valle started and picked up the win on a complete game, one-hit shut out, the sixth of her career. Jessica Phillips drove in the games lone run, her team-leading 12th RBI. For Memphis, it was their first series win against ECU since the first year of Tiger softball in 2006.
