Tigers Begin Second Half of C-USA Schedule at Marshall After sweeping the mid-week non-conference sereis with Alabama State, the Tigers will travel to Huntington, W. Va., this weekend, to take on the Thundering Herd of Marshall. The Herd enters as one of the bottom-dwellers in C-USA, with a mere one conference win thus far. The weekend will match-up one of the most-tagged pitching staffs in the conference (Marshall’s team ERA is 4.23, and they possess a 1.28:1 strike-out/walk ratio) against a Tiger slugging Tiger squad (69 of 177 hits in 2011 for extra bases). For the Thundering Herd, the offense is predicated on speed; Marshall leads the conference in steals by a wide margin, with 106. Last Year Against the Thundering Herd In last season’s action, Memphis took two of three from Marshall at the Tiger Softball Complex. In the series-opener, the Tigers snapped what had been a nine-game losing streak to the Herd, with a game-winning single from Kailey Kassner taking the victory. Vanessa Walle was 3-for-4 and Carly Hummel threw a complete game for the win. The Thundering Herd took game two, 4-2, despite a stellar relief effort from Lauren Carley, who retired 15 batters in a row. Memphis won the series in the rubber match, an extra-inning affair the Tigers took, 2-1. Hummel threw a complete-game two-hitter for the win and Jessica Phillips ended the series with a walk-off solo home run. Live Coverage Wednesday’s doubleheader against Marshall can be followed through live stats provided by CBS College Sports GameTracker. Live chat provided by Memphis Media Relations will also be available for each game. Links to the live chat and GameTracker can be found at GoTigersGo. com. All-Access video coverage can be found at gotigersgo.com Sister Act When Memphis senior hurler Janelle Valle toes the rubber this weekend, she could be looking at a very familiar foe in the batter’s box. Her sister Jazmine is the Herd’s starting third baseman, and is currently batting .238 with two homers

and 15 RBI. The sophomore was a preseason all-Conference USA selection. While the sister’s didn’t face each other last season, Jazmine was 1-for-9 with a run scored and an RBI against the Tigers in 2010. On Deck Memphis has it’s off week in conference play next week, but will keep sharp with scheduled non-conference action against Ohio Valley Conference opponents Tennessee State, at home April 13, and at Murray State, April 15. Memphis Dominates Alabama State The Tigers scored 19 runs in two games, more than they had achieved in their previous four, to sweep a mid-week doubleheader with SWAC foe Alabama State, April 6. In the first game, Carly Hummel struck out 14 batters and Jessica Phillips slammed her team-leading 10th homer of the season to give the Tigers and easy 7-0 victory. In the second game, The Tigers put on a hitting clinic, with 12 of their 15 knocks going for extra bases. Kamri Chester and Maddie McKinley each earned two triples in the game, tying the school record, and Heather Mott hit the program’s first-ever inside-the-park home run. Ellen Roberts pitched the complete game, striking out five, and hit the game-ending double to run-rule the Hornets. Tiger Bats Go Cold Against Tulsa The Golden Hurricane swept into Memphis and swept the Tigers, whose batting was not up to the same standards as the previuos week’s contest. The Tigers dropped the opener, 4-1, with Carly Hummel going the distance and striking out nine in the loss. Heather Mott scored the Tigers lone run on a wild pitch. Game two was an extra-inning affair; both teams scored in the first, with Maddie McKinley bringing around Mott with a sac fly. Janelle Valle danced out of trouble for 5.1 innings, scattering seven hits before giving way to Lauren Carley. The Golden Hurricane pushed ahead in the eighth on a solo homer and Memphis couldn’t muster a response in the bottom half for the loss. In Sunday’s finale, Carley pitched five innings, but the offense was anemic, ultimately leading to a 7-0 defeat.
