Tigers Take on TSU in First of Two NonConference Contests, This Week The Tigers will take on their second Ohio Valley Conference opponent of the week, Friday, when they travel to Murray State for a doubleheader, beginning at 2 p.m. The Racers are 13-21 this season, including 6-11 in OVC play. While senior Lauren Buch (.400 average, 10 home runs) and Jenna Bradley (11 home runs, 32 RBI) provide punch for the Racer offense, the rest of the team has is hitting a mere .227 and have only accounted for 12 more home runs. Pitching has been Murray State’s true Achilles heel, however; the Racers have a team ERA at 5.71 and opponents are hitting .304 against them.
see State, Wednesday. In the first game, the Tigers pounded out a dozen hits, with Heather Mott going 3-for-4 with three RBI in a 7-2 win. Lauren Carley picked up the win in relief, scattering two hits in 3.1 innings and striking out three. In game two, sophomore ace Carly Hummel picked up her third no-hitter of 2011, striking out 13 in five innings for her season’s 15th victory. It marked the third game in a row that Hummel has struck out 10 or more batters. At the plate, four Tigers (Mott, Bernardino, Phillips and Goranson) collected two hits apiece and the Tigers ran their string of games with double-digit hits to six. Maddie McKinley also drove in two runs in the game.
Last Meeting with Murray State This match-up will mark the Tigers first-ever meeting with the Racers. Memphis is 6-2 against first-time opponents this season. The Tigers are 17-10 all-time against opponents from the Ohio Valley Conference, and have been victorious in six of the past seven meetings with an OVC school.
Memphis Sweeps Marshall in Two Games Memphis took both conference games at Marshall, last weekend, to improve to 25-10 (8-6 C-USA). In the first game Saturday, the Tigers piled on 10 runs in a 10-3 romp for Carly Hummel’s 14th win of the season. Jessica Phillips hit her season’s 11th home run in the game, which was delayed five hours due to weather. The second game was pushed to Sunday due to darkness, and the Tigers won it, 7-4, behind 5.2 innings of three-hit relief work by Lauren Carley for the win. Maddie McKinley and Kailey Kassner homered to give Memphis its 25th win, equaling last season’s total. The third game of the series was cancelled due to time constraints and will not be made up.

Memphis Dominates Alabama State The Tigers scored 19 runs in two games, more than they had achieved in their previous four, to sweep a mid-week doubleheader with SWAC foe Alabama State, April 6. In the first game, Carly Hummel struck out 14 batters and Jessica Phillips slammed her team-leading 10th homer of the season to give the Tigers and easy 7-0 victory. In the second game, The Tigers put on a hitting clinic, with 12 of their 15 knocks going for extra bases. Kamri Chester and Maddie McKinley each earned two triples in the game, tying the school record, and Heather Mott hit the program’s first-ever inside-the-park home run. Ellen Roberts pitched the complete game, striking out five, and hit the game-ending double to run-rule the Hornets.
