An intimidating arena for opponents of the University of Memphis women’s basketball and volleyball teams, the Elma Roane Fieldhouse serves as the home of the Tigers right in the heart of the University of Memphis campus. The arena is often packed with Tiger fans and gets loud and raucous during games with the stands backing right up to the benches courtside. That has provided the Tigers with a great home-court advantage over the years. The Fieldhouse is named after former women’s athletic director Elma Neal Roane. A pioneer for women’s athletics at Memphis and in the Mid-South, Roane still attends games in her namesake building, cheering on the Blue and Gray. And for women’s student-athletes, the Fieldhouse is an all-in-one stop with a weight room and athletic training room in the lower level of the Fieldhouse.

Situated in the heart of the University of Memphis’ campus, the 2,565-seat Elma Roane Fieldhouse is home to the Memphis volleyball and women’s basketball teams. The Fieldhouse is equipped with locker rooms and a fully functional training facility. The Fieldhouse recently received a renovation for an entirely new locker room, team meeting room, video room, doctor’s examination area and team lounge that will benefit volleyball and women’s basketball. Over 900 chairback seats were added to the arena in the summer of 2003. A new floor was also put down. Banner wraps around the entire perimeter of the playing floor were added to the Fieldhouse in 2009. The Tiger eyes banner at the end of the gym was also changed in 2009 to reflect the Memphis colors of blue and gray.

University of Memphis

The University of Memphis coaching staff boasts a wealth of knowledge and diversity that give student athletes at Memphis the best chance to win. April Jauregui was named head coach on March 5, 2008 and immediately brought in Marko Majstorovic to assist her. James “JO Onikeku joined the staff in 2011 after being an associate head coach at UT Chattanooga. In her fourth season at the helm of the program, Jauregui led Memphis to 20 wins for the first time since 2007 and saw two players receive postseason recognition.

April Jauregui is now 60-67 after four seasons at the helm of the Memphis program. A former letterman and academic All-American, Jauregui took over in 2008 after a three-year stint under former head coach Carrie Yerty. She guided the Tigers to a 17-14 mark in her first season as head coach and also coached Memphis to a 20-13 record in 2011. The 2011 Tigers won three preseason tournaments while compiling an 11-2 record.

Veronica Zimmerman, a highly touted recruit from Ohio, sat out the 2011 season nursing a knee injury. She returned to practice during the middle of the season and will be expected to be a key contributor in 2012. Zimmerman, who had a highly decorated career at St. Ursula Academy, highlighted her career by handing out 37 assists and adding six service aces to lead the Arrows to the school’s second-ever state title. St. Ursula finished the year ranked No. 1 in Ohio with a 28-1 record. The Arrows also pulled in a 25th national ranking by MaxPreps.com. The 2010 First Team All-State selection has been voted to play in both the District 7 Senior AllStar match and the Yr S K E TA PCT A SA SE DIG BS BA TB BE BHE PTS State All-Star match. 2011 Redshirt - Did Not Play

The Tigers got off to a roaring start in 2011, winning four-straight games to claim the tournament title at the Memphis Invitational. Memphis would go on to win two more preseason events at the Southern Illinois Saluki Invitational and the UNC-Greensboro Spartan Spiketacular. Marija Jovanovic led the Tigers and was named to the alltournament team in all four preseason events. The Tigers opened C-USA play with a 2-1 record in three home matches, defeating ECU and Marshall. Memphis then dropped four of six games to fall to 4-7 in the conference before rallying to win three-straight over Marshall, ECU and UAB to close the season and finish 20-13 overall and 9-11 in Conference USA play. The 20 overall wins and nine conference wins are both records under Coach Jauregui.

The 2011 Tiger Volleyball team opened the season in dominating fashion, going 11-2 in the preseason and claiming three tournament titles. Marija Jovanovic was the catalyst for the team, as the junior outside hitter was selected to the all-tournament team in all four of Memphis’ preseason events. Juniors Altrese Hawkins and Hajnalka Molnar were also instrumental in the team’s success as Hawkins led the team in kills and Molnar led the NCAA in assists per set during the preseason.

The University of Memphis´ official school colors of Blue and Gray were selected in the early 1900s. The colors were chosen in an effort to show unity in a nation that was still recovering from the effects of the Civil War. The student body thought that by picking the colors of the North and the South, the school would show a togetherness among all students. For over 35 years, the sideline mascot for the University of Memphis has been the Bengal Tiger. TOM III, the current Tiger mascot, attends all Tiger Football home games, and he can also be found at many other University events throughout the year as a powerful and majestic symbol of Tigers Athletics. TOM III travels in style in a custom-designed, climatecontrolled trailer, always with police escort.

The Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway/ University of Memphis Athletic Hall of Fame opened on August 30, 2011. The facility is located at 570 Normal Street and became the centerpiece of the new Athletic Office Building addition. Over 6,200 male and female letterwinners have been identified since the school first opened its doors in the fall of 1912 and the photographs of more than 4,000 of those student-athletes were collected for one of the four interactive databases. Memorabilia was gathered from many of the more than 400 inductees in the M Club Hall of Fame. The facility is open on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Considered the “Home of the Blues” and the “Birthplace of Rock ´n Roll,” the city of Memphis´ musical roots run deep. However, music is just a chapter in the history, as well as the future, of the city located in the heart of Mid-America. Beale Street, located in the heart of downtown, has rapidly become the entertainment center of Memphis and visitors and locals alike enjoy the food and music offered in the various establishments. Beale Street meets the Mississippi River at Tom Lee Park, site of the annual Beale Street Music Festival. The weekend-long event is just a part of the month-long Memphis in May International Festival that also includes the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest and the Sunset Symphony.

R.C. Johnson came aboard in February of 1996 and immediately set forth in bringing U of M Tiger athletics into national prominence. Over the last 15 years, the dynamic administrator has built Tiger Athletics into a nationallyrecognized program that has participated in five bowl games, 14 post-season men’s basketball tournaments and six C-USA soccer championships during his tenure. Under Johnson’s direction, donations to the department have risen steadily and more than $7 million has been raised each of the last three years.

During his tenure, R.C. Johnson has created the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the Tiger Scholarship Fund Board of Directors and the Athletic Director’s Ambassador’s Club. The Ambassador’s Club, which started with two members in 1997, has reached an all-time high of 41 members under Johnson. A significant revenue source for Tiger Athletics, members of the Ambassador’s Club pledge to commit $500,000.
