The Rivalry’s Top Games
(compiled by Memphis radio analyst and Tigers basketball historian Matt Dillon) February 2, 1957: Memphis beat No. 3 Louisville 8178 at Ellis Auditorium in downtown Memphis. It was the Tigers’ first win over the Cardinals after six-straight losses. The game was the catalyst to the 1957 Memphis team finishing second in the NIT and finishing the season ranked in the top-20 of the polls for the first time. The win put the Tigers program on the map nationally. All-American Win Wilfong scored 20 points for the Tigers. UofL All-American Charlie Tyra had 21 points and 12 rebounds. March 6, 1971: Louisville defeated Memphis 102-73 at Freedom Hall in the regular-season finale for both teams. Al Vilcheck and Mike Lawhon scored 19 points apiece for UofL, but the Tigers’ James Douglas led all scorers with a game-high 22. A sidebar to the game was an ugly first-half altercation between Louisville’s Mike Lawhon and the Tigers’ Fred Horton. After words between the two players, Lawhon struck Horton in the back of the head going up court and a fight involving several players ensued. An incensed Horton picked up a metal folding chair and ran toward Lawhon swinging it over his head. Memphis assistant coach Wayne Yates raced to grab Horton near mid-court before security guards and police helped shove Horton to the Memphis bench. Horton was handcuffed by a security guard, but went back onto the court before being ejected and removed from the bench area. The incident was the second in two seasons between the rivals and was a continuation of a feud that began in the season finale the year before (1969-70) in Memphis. In that 1969-70 season finale, Louisville’s Al Vilcheck punched Horton while leaving the court following UofL’s 83-82 win at the Mid-South Coliseum and then ran into the dressing room. The sucker punch opened a cut on Horton’s right eyebrow and set the stage for Horton’s retaliation a year later. March 11, 1972: Fourth-ranked Louisville beat the 11th-ranked Tigers 83-72 in a Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Playoff game – a game that made the rivalry even more intense. Despite defeating UofL twice in the regular season and sharing the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title, the MVC office called for a playoff game between the Tigers and Cardinals to be held at Memorial Gym on the Vanderbilt campus. Louisville took a 37-35 lead at the intermission on a half court shot by Jim Price. Six UofL players were led into double figures by Henry Bacon’s 16 points. Don Holcombe had a double-double for the Tigers (gamehigh 21 points and 15 rebounds), while Larry Finch tossed in 18. The Tigers’ loss put them into the NIT, and Louisville got the Missouri Valley’s automatic bid into the NCAA. March 7, 1982: The 13th-ranked Tigers beat Louisville 73-62 at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis in the Metro Conference Tournament championship game. All-American Keith Lee posted a double-double of 27 points-15 rebounds and was named Tournament MVP. Wiley Smith’s 17 points led the UofL. It was Memphis’ first conference tournament title since winning Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament in 1929.
March 8, 1987: The Tigers, under first-year head coach Larry Finch, beat Louisville for third time in the 1986-87 season in the Metro Conference Tournament championship game at Freedom Hall 75-52. It was also the second time for Memphis to beat Louisville at Freedom Hall during the 1986-87 season. The loss was UofL’s only Metro Conference Tournament championship game defeat on its home court in Metro Conference history. UofL, the defending national champion, ended the season with an 18-14 record and did not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Despite winning the Metro title, Memphis was on probation and ineligible for postseason play. As a result, for the only time in its history, the Metro Conference had no teams in the NCAA Tournament field. The 23-point win was the Tigers’ largest versus Louisville in the series. The Tigers Marvin Alexander, the Metro Conference Tournament MVP, scored 18 points. Herbert Crook scored 14 for UofL. Sophomore Pervis Ellison, the 1986 Final Four MVP, was held to only 3 points. February 20, 1989: The Tigers defeated 10th-ranked Louisville in Freedom Hall. Memphis jumped out to a 24-0 lead with 13:11 in the first half. Louisville made a run and pulled to within two points at 66-64 at the 2:17 mark of the second half, but Memphis held on for a 72-67 upset. Elliot Perry scored 25 points to lead the Tigers, and Pervis Ellison had a double-double of 23 points and 19 rebounds for Louisville. February 19, 2003: The Tigers beat 4th-ranked Louisville in Freedom Hall in John Calipari’s first UofM coaching appearance on the Cardinals’ homecourt. Antonio Burks led five Tigers in double figures with 16, and Chris Massie added a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Reece Gaines led Louisville with 19 points. It was Memphis’ first win over a top-five ranked team since beating 3rd-ranked Michigan in 73-72 in the 1996 Rainbow Classic. March 12, 2005: No. 6 Louisville edged the Tigers 7574 in the championship game of the Conference USA Tournament. It was the second time the Cardinals defeated the Tigers at the new FedExForum during the 2004-05 season. With Louisville leading 75-73 in the final seconds, Tigers guard Darius Washington Jr. was fouled by the Cardinals on a three-point attempt at the buzzer. Washington hit the first free throw, but missed the next two and crumbled to the floor at the free throw line as Louisville claimed the Conference USA Tournament title. Francisco Garcia paced the winning Cardinals with 19 points, and Darius Washington Jr. had 20 for the Tigers. The loss left the UofM with a 19-15 regular season record and denied the Tigers an NCAA Tournament berth. Memphis went on to appear in the NIT Final Four in New York, while Louisville reached the NCAA Final Four in St. Louis.

game #14: memphis vs. LOUISVILLE • page 5 • The Tigers-Cardinals series is the second-longest in Memphis basketball history. • The longest is Memphis’ series with Southern Miss, which stands at 90 games. BACK TO NORMAL • After playing the previous two seasons as nonconference opponents, Memphis and Louisville return to action as familiar foes in conference action — at least for one season. • Memphis and Louisville became charter members of the American Athletic Conference July 1, 2013. • Prior to the last two non-league encounters in 2011-12 and 2012-13, the Tigers and Cardinals had met 72 times as conference rivals. • The series began in 1948-49, but heated up when the two programs became conference rivals in 1967-68 as members of the Missouri Valley Conference. • The two schools were members of the Missouri Valley Conference (1968-73), Metro Conference (1976-91) and Conference USA (19962005). WHEN BOTH ARE RANKED • Considering the storied histories of both programs, it’s quite amazing that Memphis and Louisville have met only 12 previous times when both teams were ranked. • The 13th encounter with both the Tigers and Cardinals ranked is set for Thursday. • The last time both teams were ranked when they played was in 2003-04. Louisville won that game, a 66-60 victory at Freedom Hall Feb. 28, 2004.
• Louisville leads the series 9-3 when both teams are in the national rankings. • The last nine meetings with both teams ranked all were decided by single digits. • The average margin of victory in the last nine encounters (all single-digit outcomes) was 4.4 points. • The average margin of victory in all 12 games in which both teams were ranked was 6.3 points. • The following shows the results of those ranked encounters: Year 2013-14 2003-04 2002-03 1995-96 1985-96 1982-83 1975-76 1971-72 1955-56

TIGERS, CARDINALS AMONG ELITE GROUP • Memphis is among the winningest NCAA Division I programs since 2000-01 and 2005-06, but it doesn’t end there.
PASTNER MAKES GIFT DONATION TO ATHLETICS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Less than a week after announcing the largest monetary gift in the history of Tigers athletics, University of Memphis athletics officials reported another major gift to the department’s capital campaign Dec. 12. “I am very proud to announce that our men’s basketball coach Josh Pastner has made a $250,000 donation to our capital campaign”, said Memphis Athletics Director Tom Bowen. “Josh’s gift is the largest ever made by a Memphis coach and will be used for sport enhancements and improvements. “We are making great strides in building a culture of champions at the University of Memphis. As part of our strategic plan, we are working to enhance programs and facilities for all our studentathletes and sports.” Pastner’s gift of $250,000 will become part of the $40 million athletics capital campaign. Earlier this month, University officials announced that former Tigers basketball player Bill Laurie and his wife, Nancy, had given the athletics department a $10 million lead gift, the largest donation in the history of Tigers athletics. Further details on the capital campaign and other gifts will be announced in the coming weeks.

PASTNER VERSUS PITINO • Although this Thursday’s game is the third time Josh Pastner and Rick Pitino face off as head coaches, the two were on opposing sidelines two times prior to the last two match-ups. • The most memorable of the two previous Pastner-Pitino meetings came in the 1997 NCAA Tournament championship game. Pastner was a player on the Arizona squad that defeated Pitino’s Kentucky team 84-79 for the NCAA title. • The next Pastner-Pitino encounter was in the 2006-07 season. Pastner was an assistant coach at Arizona that year when the Wildcats defeated Pitino’s Louisville squad 72-65 in the 2006 Jimmy V Classic in New York City. IT’S AN NCAA RING THING • Both head coaches in Thursday’s MemphisLouisville match-up have NCAA title rings. • Memphis head coach Josh Pastner won his NCAA title as a player on the 1996-97 Arizona squad. Arizona defeated Rick Pitino’s Kentucky team for the championship. • The year before (1996-97), Louisville head coach Rick Pitino led Kentucky to the NCAA championship. Pitino won his second NCAA title with the Cardinals last year. A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE • Around 31 years before Memphis hired a young 32-year-old Josh Pastner to take over the Tigers hoops program in 2009, an even younger 25-year-old Rick Pitino was hired as the head coach at Boston University. • In his first four seasons at Memphis, Pastner guided the Tigers to a 106-34 record, two CUSA regular-season crowns, three C-USA Tournament titles and four-straight postseason tournaments (2011, 2012, 2013 NCAA; 2010 NIT). • In his first four years at Boston University, Pitino put together a 70-41 record and made one NIT appearance (1980). memphis representin’ • The city of Memphis and its surrounding communities will be well represented in Thursday’s
contest between the Tigers and Cardinals. • The squads combine to have nine players from Memphis area on the two rosters. • Louisville has one player — Chris Jones (Melrose HS) — that calls the Bluff City home. • On the Tigers’ side, eight players hail from the Memphis area. Chris Crawford, Markel Crawford, Trey Draper, Joe Jackson, Nick King and Jake McDowell all are from Memphis. Sophomore Anthony Cole is from Arlington and freshman Austin Nichols is from Collierville, both suburbs of Memphis. FOLLOWING A LOSS UNDER PASTNER • The Tigers dropped their American Athletic Conference home opener Saturday to Cincinnati. • However, Memphis has proven to be quite resilient after a loss in the Josh Pastner era. • The Tigers have a 32-4 record (.889 winning percentage) after a loss under Pastner. • The last time Memphis suffered back-to-back losses under Pastner was in 2011-12. • The Tigers dropped single-digit outcome decisions to Murray State 76-72 at FedExForum Dec. 11, 2011, and Louisville 95-87 at the KFC Yum! Center Dec. 17, 2011. more on THE CINCINNATI LOSS • The Tigers’ American Athletic Conference home-opening loss to Cincinnati caused the researchers go to way back in the Memphis record book. • And, while no one likes a loss, the Cincinnati setback revealed the Tigers’ sustained success in the 21st century. • The double-digit home loss to Cincinnati was only Memphis’ sixth since 2000-01. • The double-digit home loss to Cincinnati was the only one in league play since 1999-2000. • The Jan. 4 setback was the Tigers’ first doubledigit home loss since Memphis fell to No. 10 Georgetown 86-69 Dec. 23, 2010. • The loss was the first double-digit home conference loss since a 74-59 setback to Louisville Feb. 3, 2000. • To find a larger margin of defeat in a conference home game, one has to go back all the way to the 1998-99 season. In the regular-season finale, Memphis lost to No. 9 Cincinnati 89-64 at The Pyramid. LAST TIME THAT... • Memphis fans hope they won’t have to worry about this one, but again, it shows the sustained success of the Tigers program in recent seasons. • With a loss Thursday, Memphis would dip to under .500 in conference play, marking the first time that would happen since the beginning of the 2003-04 league season. • A Memphis setback Thursday would drop the Tigers to 1-2 in American Athletic Conference play.
JOSH PASTNER Head Coach 116-37 Record 5th Year in 2013-14 • A Kingwood, Texas, native, Pastner was hired as the University of Memphis’ 17th head coach on Apr. 7, 2009. • Pastner had a record of 106-34 at Memphis in his four seasons, the most victories by a Tigers head coach in that span of time. • Last year, Pastner guided Memphis to a 31-5 overall record and a 16-0 Conference USA mark. The Tigers swept the C-USA regular-season and tournament titles and earned an NCAA Tournament berth. • In each of his four seasons, Pastner has led the Tigers to a 20-win campaign and a postseason berth (2010 NIT; 2011, 2012, 2013 NCAA) • Pastner served as an assistant coach for the Tigers in the 2008-09 season. • Prior to joining the Memphis basketball family, Pastner spent 12 years of his college basketball life at Arizona as a player, staff member and assistant coach. • While in Tucson, Pastner was a member of Wildcats squads that made 12-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and posted a 290-103 record (19972008). • Pastner was a player on the 1996-97 Arizona team that won the NCAA title.

• The last time Memphis was under .500 in league play was the start of the 2003-04 Conference USA season. • That season, the Tigers lost their first two league games (0-2 start) on the road at Southern Miss and DePaul. • However, Memphis bounced back to win its next 11 conference games and eventually won a share of the 2003-04 Conference USA regularseason crown. ALL GOOD STREAKS COME TO AN END • Memphis entered American Athletic Conference play on a 26-game conference win streak (including postseason conference tournaments). • On Dec. 31, 2013, the Tigers extended that league win streak to 27 straight with their American Athletic Conference opening 88-73 win over USF. • But, as with all streaks, Memphis’ conference win streak came to an end Jan. 4, 2014, with a 69-53 loss to Cincinnati at FedExForum. • Prior to the Jan. 4 loss, the last time Memphis dropped a conference game was Feb. 18, 2012, when it fell to UTEP 60-58 at FedExForum. • The 27-game conference win streak was well short of the longest in school history. • The Tigers won 64 straight league games (regular season and tournament) from 2006-10, tying Kentucky for the NCAA record. • In that streak, Memphis won 52-consecutive, regular-season games, which is an NCAA record.
BATTLE OF RANKED (SCORING) TEAMS • Thursday’s game features a battle between top35 ranked teams — ranked teams in terms of the nation’s top scoring offenses. • In the latest NCAA rankings released Jan. 6, Memphis is No. 33 in the nation in scoring offense and Louisville is No. 16. • The Tigers are second in the American Athletic Conference with an 80.5 scoring average. • The Cardinals lead The American with an 84.9 scoring average. DIMIN’ AND SWIPIN’ • Two reasons why Memphis and Louisville have two of the nation’s top scoring offenses are both share the ball well and cause havoc on the defensive end that leads to points. • Memphis averages 16.5 assists and 10.2 steals per game. Louisville averages 15.2 assists and 10.0 steals per game. • The following shows where the Tigers and Cardinals rank nationally and in The American in assists and steals: Team Stat Memphis Ast/Stl Louisville Ast/Stl

CLOSING IN ON 1,500 WINS • With its 11th victory in 2013-14, the Memphis program will record its 1,500th all-time win. • The Tigers entered 2013-14 with an all-time record of 1,489-844-1. • With its 10 wins so far this season, Memphis now has 1,499 all-time victories. • When the 1,500-win milestone is reached, Memphis will become the fifth American Athletic Conference school to do so (Temple, Louisville, Cincinnati, Connecticut).
MEMPHIS VERSUS THE AMERICAN • Although Thursday’s game is only Memphis’ third in the American Athletic Conference, the Tigers have faced the other nine league schools as non-conference foes or previous conference members. • The Tigers have a 142-114 all-time record (.555 winning percentage; includes this season’s first two league results) against members of The American. • Memphis has played Cincinnati (31-37), Connecticut (1-0), Houston (27-12), Louisville (3453), SMU (11-3), Temple (5-5), UCF (14-1) and USF (19-3). “CLOSE-CALL” PASTNER • Memphis enters Thursday’s American Athletic Conference match-up with a 2-1 record in single-digit outcome games this season. Louisville is 1-2. • Under head coach Josh Pastner, Memphis has been rather successful in single-digit outcome games. • Overall, Pastner’s teams have a 41-20 record (.672 winning percentage) in games decided by single digits. His squads are 27-12 (.692 winning percentage) in games decided by five or fewer points. • The following charts Memphis’ success in “close-call” games in the Pastner era:

game #14: memphis vs. LOUISVILLE • page 8 shooting 50 or above • David Pellom doesn’t shoot the ball much. But, when he does, it usually goes in. • And his numbers prove it. • The Tigers’ 6-foot-7 graduate student is shooting a team-high 72.5 percent from the field. • In his last six games, Pellom’s been even better from the field, hitting 78.8 percent of his attempts (26-of-33). • Pellom, who missed the first three games of the season due to knee surgery, has six contests in which he shot 50 percent or better from the field (minimum 4 FGA). • So, in just over half of his 10 appearances, the Wilmington, N.C., native has shot 50 percent or better from the floor. • In the Jan. 4 loss to Cincinnati, Pellom was 4-of5 from the field for eight points. He also pulled down seven boards versus the Bearcats. • Pellom’s field goal shooting performance versus Cincinnati was the 49th time in his career that he shot 50 percent or better in a game (minimum 4 FGA). • At USF Dec. 31, he was 5-of-7 from the field for 10 points and added eight rebounds and one block. • Against Jackson State Dec. 28, Pellom was a perfect one in which he was 5-of-5 from the field and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe (12 points) in Memphis’ 75-61 win over Jackson State Dec. 28. pellom MAKES RETURN IN FLORIDA • What makes David Pellom’s shooting performances stand out is that he underwent arthroscopic debridement surgery on his left knee Nov. 7. Dr. Barry Phillips of Campbell Clinic performed the surgery. • The reason for the Nov. 7 surgery was that the 6-foot-7, 224-pound forward was experiencing some knee discomfort from an injury suffered earlier in his career at George Washington. • Pellom, a transfer from George Washington, was expected to be sidelined for five weeks. • However, Pellom’s recovery went quicker than expected, and he saw action in all three Tigers’ games in the Old Spice Classic Nov. 28-Dec. 1. TO THREE OR NOT TO THREE • Overall, the Tigers have been subpar from the three-point arc in 2013-14, shooting 29 percent from long range. • The following breaks down the Tigers’ threepoint shooting in wins and losses (in addition to losses only to Oklahoma State and Cincinnati):

game #14: memphis vs. LOUISVILLE • page 10 MEMPHIS ANNOUNCED $10 MILLION GIFT TO ATHLETICS President Brad Martin and Athletics Director Tom Bowen announced Dec. 2 that alumni Bill and Nancy Laurie have made an extraordinary gift to the University of Memphis. Their $10 million contribution to the capital campaign for athletics facilities is the single-largest philanthropic gift in the history of the athletics department, and the second-largest gift ever in the 100-year history of the university. Bill and Nancy Laurie are both graduates of the University of Memphis (then known as Memphis State University). Bill was a starting guard on the Memphis State basketball team that played in the 1973 NCAA championship game. They are passionate philanthropists and have given numerous gifts in support of the arts, athletics and education. By securing the $10 million lead gift, the athletics department leadership has reached a significant benchmark in the capital campaign. Memphis has already secured 25 percent of the funds necessary to reach its goal of $40 million, less than 120 days after the plan was unveiled by President Martin. All capital campaign funds have been dedicated to athletics facilities on the Uof M’s Park Avenue Campus. The plan calls for construction of a new men’s basketball practice and training facility, an indoor football practice complex and a softball clubhouse, which includes indoor batting areas. It will additionally fund comprehensive upgrades and renovations to existing facilities, such as FedExPark and the Hardin Family Sports Complex. The upgrades will include improvements in common-use facilities that benefit each of the Tigers 18 athletics programs. • The last time the Tigers averaged 80 or more points for a season was 2005-06. Memphis averaged exactly 80.0 points per game. • The last time Memphis averaged over 80 points in a season was in 1985-86. That Tigers squad averaged 82.4 points per game. • Since 1955-56, the Tigers’ highest scoring average for a season was in 1974-75 when they averaged 90.0 points per contest. JACKSON EYES ELITE TIGERS CLUB • On his current pace in all three statistical categories, Joe Jackson could become the second player in Memphis history to finish with over 1,500 points, 550 assists and 175 steals. • Jackson entered 2013-14 with 1,209 points, 413 assists and 137 steals. • After 13 games in 2013-14, Jackson now has 1,404 points, 459 assists and 160 steals.
• If reached, Jackson would join former Tigers standout Elliot Perry as the only two players in program history to do so. CRAWFORD REACHES 1,000-POINTS • Chris Crawford entered 2013-14 needing only 74 points to reach 1,000 points for his career. • Crawford suffered an ankle injury in the Tigers’ Dec. 7 win over Northwestern State, and his status was a game-time decision Dec. 13 against UALR. • Crawford, though, played 34 minutes versus the Trojans and scored nine points to reach 1,000 points for his career. • The basket that gave the 6-foot-4 guard his 1,000th point was a three-pointer at the 11:44 mark of the second half. He followed with another trey 50 seconds. • Crawford now has 1,040 career points and is tied for the No. 42 spot on the all-time scoring chart.
