EXPERIENCE FACTOR Taking a look at the roster, there is a mix of experience and youth. Derrick Thomas (102) and Ethan Gross (99) offer the most starting experience, being the lone two players with more than a season (56 games) of starts. Ford Wilson has 55 career starts and Colton Simbeck made 48 in his freshman campaign. The projected opening day lineup has 406 combined starts, an average of 51 among eight players. IRONMAN Shortstop Ethan Gross is projected to make his 100th career start on Friday in the season opener. If Gross starts the game, it would mark his 93rd consecutive start, the longest such streak on the squad. Gross has started every game since March 26, 2011 against East Carolina, the second game of the doubleheader. SCHEDULE TIDBITS The 2013 slate features 10 teams coming off NCAA tournament campaigns. The Tigers will play a total of 25 games against 2012 NCAA tourney teams this spring, 14 of which will be played in the Bluff City.

Memphis won 12-of-15 games down the stretch run last season and in those games, the Tigers were 8-2. Under head coach Daron Schoenrock, Memphis is 85-104 in games decided by two runs or less. 100TH YEAR OF TIGER BASEBALL The University of Memphis is celebrating the 100th year of Tiger Baseball in 2013. Prior to opening day, GoTigersGo.com featured a 100 day countdown to first pitch with historical photos, stats and facts about the past teams and players. STICK IT TO CANCER This season, Tiger baseball has teamed up with The Cure Baseball, to create awareness about cancer through the game of baseball. The Tigers are taking part in the Stick It To Cancer Campaign by placing The Cure Baseball’s Logo sticker on the back of their batting helmets. The Tigers wear this sticker as a visual sign of support for every man, woman and child battling any and all types of cancer. The Cure Baseball is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with a goal of raising cancer awareness through the game of baseball. You can read more about the organization and its mission by visiting TheCureBaseball.org.
FREEBIE STATS Head Coach Daron Schoenrock employs the “freebie” award for each game. This season, each set of games notes will keep an eye on the freebie award. There are three key goals to the freebie award: 1) Memphis has the only big inning with which three or more runs are scored. 2) Score seven or more runs. 3) Hold opponents to six or less runs. freebie watch category
