On The Clock With the new bats this year in college baseball, one trend to follow this season is length of game. Memphis averages a game duration of 2:47 this season through the first 10 games. After 10 games in the 2010 season, game times averaged 3:11. Memphis has played three games lasting over three hours and the shortest game has been played in 2:08 against Southern Illinois on March 6. Memphis is 0-4 in games that last under 2:35 this season. Timely Hitting When looking closer at the time of games, Memphis has needed some timely hitting. The Memphis Classic provided some timely hitting by the Tigers with a six-run third inning against Eastern Kentucky. All six runs in the third inning against the Colonels came with two outs. On March 6 against Southern Illinois, Memphis left 11 base runners on base and nine of those were stranded in scoring position and the Tigers were shutout for the first time since April 17, 2009. Two-out runs by No. 23 Auburn downed Memphis on March 8 as Auburn scored five runs with two outs in the game. With two outs this season, Memphis is batting .360 (41 of 114) and Robby Graham leads the team with a 5-for-9 effort at the plate with two outs. The Tigers have 28 RBI with two outs in an inning and Jacob Wilson leads the team with seven two-out RBI.

PAGE 2

New Bat Standard Effects Hitting The new bats were expected to have an impact on hitting throughout college baseball and in Conference USA, hitting is down by nearly 12 percent per game. Home runs per game are down nearly 40 percent from last season. The percentages are based on the first 10 days of competition this season versus last season. Memphis Out To Hot Start At The Dish Although college baseball switched to the new BBCOR bats, the Memphis offense has not shown any signs of trouble. With hitting down nearly 12 percent throughout C-USA, Memphis has 10 more hits than it did after 10 games last season. The Tigers are also plus two with six home runs in the first 10 games. Memphis has posted the most dominant stat with a plus 12 differential in runs scored with 72 in 10 games. At this point last season, Memphis had plated 60 runs. The Tigers have scored double-digit runs in four out of 10 games and pounded out double-digit hits in six of the 10 games. The Tigers approach at the plate has paid big dividends as well with the Tigers having a plus 10 margin with 47 walks this year compared to 37 after 10 games last year. Memphis has struck out less with 53 strikeouts this season compared to 73 after 10 games a year ago.

Closing In On 1600 Wins With the recent research gathered by Memphis stat historian John Guniozzo, the Tiger baseball program is just two wins away from win No. 1600 all-time. After fielding a team for the first time in 1913, Memphis has posted a record of 1598-1203-16 all-time. Home Cookin’ After a rain-out on Friday against Oral Roberts, Memphis started a stretch of home games that has the Tigers playing seven of nine games at FedExPark. The Tigers play 12 games in the Bluff City in March, including the March 23 match-up with Arkansas at AutoZone Park. Since head coach Daron Schoenrock was named skipper in 2006, Memphis is 36-23 in the month of March in the Bluff City. The 12 games at home in March are second-most Memphis has played under Schoenrock with the most being 13 in the 2008 season. “Rain Drops Keep Falling On My Head” As the B.J. Thomas lyric goes, rain drops keep falling on Tiger Baseball Memphis has already had two rain outs this season. The rain out with Oral Roberts on March 4 will be made up as Arkansas-Pine Bluff will visit FedExPark for a 6:30 p.m. game on May 10. The rained out game with Auburn on March 9 will not be made up, but head coach Daron Schoenrock expects to find a team that will visit FedExPark to make up a game. Get The Lead-Off Man On Base Numbers support the notion that getting a leadoff batter on base increases the likelihood of scoring runs in an inning. That has certainly been the case for the Tigers in 2011. Memphis has put its leadoff batter on base in 45 of the 86 innings (52 percent) in which it has batted. Tiger leadoff man Drew Martinez has reached base in 11 of his 18 (.611) plate appearances as a leadoff hitter. Rick Russell (.833) is 5-of-6 in leadoff situations and Chad Zurcher is hitting .750 (6-8) leading off an inning. Martinez has scored four times when reaching the base in the first inning and the Tigers have 19 runs by leadoff batters that reach base. Three Tigers Are C-USA Top-Five Hitters With the hot start at the plate by Memphis, Chad Zurcher, Phillip Chapman and Drew Martinez are all among the top-five in Conference USA in batting average. Zurcher is second with a .485 batting average and Chapman is fourth, hitting .424. Martinez rounds out the top five with a .421 average. Please note that FedExPark is to be written as one word. FedExPark is not FedEx Park, Fed Ex Park, Fedexpark, Fed ex park or any other combination

Top-10 Chase Drew Martinez, Adam McClain, Jacob Wilson and Chad Zurcher are quickly approaching top10 marks in Tiger baseball history. With 178 career hits, Zurcher needs just nine base hits to crack the program’s top 10, while Martinez is 12 hits shy of the top-10 list.

Rung Up Tiger sophomore pitcher Dan Langfield approached Memphis’ single-game record for strikeouts in a game by fanning 16 batters at Kennesaw State on Feb. 25. Langfield finished with the second-most strikeouts in any game in C-USA history and U of M baseball history.

Let’s Get Some Runs As the former Chicago Cubs announcer Harry Caray would say during the seventh inning stretch at Wrigley Field, the Tigers need to get some runs. Since scoring 11 runs against Eastern Kentucky on March 5, Memphis has scored just two runs. The Tigers ended a 13.1 inning scoreless streak with a run in the fifth inning at No. 23 Auburn. In the last 22 innings of play, Memphis has scored four runs, but the bats aren’t silent. Memphis has 26 hits in those 22 innings. All four Memphis losses have come when the Tigers score two runs or less and the U of M is 6-0 when scoring three or more runs.

Langfield Named Pitcher Of The Week Tiger sophomore pitcher Dan Langfield was named C-USA Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 28 by the league office. Langfield posted the second-highest strikeout total in C-USA and Memphis single-game history in 7.2 IP at Kennesaw State on Friday. Langfield is the 18th Tiger pitcher to earn the recognition from C-USA and is the sixth pitcher to collect the honor since the 2009 season.

Walking In Memphis Memphis has taken 47 walks over the course of the first 10 games and leads C-USA heading into week three of the season. Rick Russell (9) is tied for fifth in the league in walks and Drew Martinez has taken the free base seven times. Milestone Victory Now in his seventh year at the helm of the Memphis baseball program, head coach Daron Schoenrock claimed his milestone 150th win as the Tigers’ skipper on Feb. 20th against Evansville. Schoenrock is four wins shy of surpassing the late Al Brown at No. 3 on Memphis’s all-time coaching wins ledger. Schoenrock needs only 22 more wins to reach a 200th career victory. Caught Napping Senior southpaw Ryan Holland leads Conference USA with three pick-offs this season. Holland picked off two Kennesaw State base runners on Feb. 26 and he added another pick off against Eastern Kentucky on March 5. As a pitching staff, Memphis leads C-USA with seven pick offs. Paullus Nails ‘Em Down Tiger closer Ben Paullus recorded his second save of the season in the 5-4 series opening win at Kennesaw State on Feb. 25. Paullus struck out one batter and had the four-out save for his second career save. Paullus has appeared in five games and sports a 0.00 ERA in 7.0 innings pitched.

1-2 Punch The Tiger duo of Drew Martinez and Chad Zurcher are back in form after leading the Tigers to its first Conference USA Tournament appearance since 2007. Both players were honored as 2011 Preseason All-C-USA performers. The Tigers All-C-USA tandem, which combined for 190 hits, 113 runs, 39 stolen bases and a .388 batting average in 2010, picked up where they left off, batting .440, with 33 hits and 22 runs scored in the first 10 games. The duo has claimed nine steals on the base paths. Chap Is Back Senior catcher Phillip Chapman showed no illeffects of the season-ending forearm injury he suffered in the final series of the 2010 regular season. In his first action since the injury, the Clinton, Miss., native led Memphis with three hits and four RBI against Evansville on Feb. 19 and came back for three more hits in game two of the series. Chapman is second on the club with a .405 batting average to go with 23 total bases, 15 hits and seven RBI. Bases Loaded...Bases Unloaded Memphis has launched two grand slam home runs in the first two weeks of the season. Eli Hynes took the first pitch he saw in his U of M career to deep right field at FedExPark for a grand slam homer in game one of the season. More recently, Jacob Wilson drove a grand slam to right center field at Kennesaw State for a grand slam. Although Memphis has two grand slams, the Tigers are batting just .250 (4-16) this season when the bases are loaded.

2011 BASEBALL GAME NOTES

2011 MEMPHIS BASEBALL daron schoenrock Head Coach 7th Year 153-201, 178-253 The 16th baseball coach in school history, Daron Schoenrock enters his seventh season at the controls of the Memphis baseball program armed with his most experienced Tiger club yet. One of the top head coaches in the business, Schoenrock led his 2010 team to the program’s best-ever finish in Conference USA history and is poised to make a run at a second NCAA Tournament apperance in 2011.

Slick Fielding With an experienced club on the diamond, Memphis has committed six errors this season, the least through 10 games in head coach Daron Schoenrock’s tenure at the U of M. After 10 games in the 2010 season, Memphis had committed 16 errors. Double Your Pleasure With two doubles on Sunday against Southern Illinois, catcher Phillip Chapman jumped into a tie for second among C-USA leaders for doubles. Chapman has six doubles this season. Drew Martinez has four doubles and the Tigers are second among C-USA teams with 28 doubles.

Evident in his “Total Person” approach to coaching, Schoenrock’s Tigers placed four Tigers on C-USA’s All-Conference squad and a league-best four players on the league’s All-Academic Team.

Please Don’t Hit Me!! Tiger shortstop Chad Zurcher has been plunked seven times in the first seven games of the season. The junior was hit twice on Feb. 19 versus Evansville and twice more on Feb. 20 versus the Purple Aces. Zurcher has now been hit by a pitch 32 times in his career at Memphis. He was plunked a career-high 13 times in 2010. That figure bested the 10 times he reached via the hit-by-pitch in 2008.

With Schoenrock at the helm of the Memphis program the Tigers were able to end the 13-year postseason hiatus and earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2007. The 2007 squad went 36-27, marking the most wins since 1994 and, combined with the 2006 campaign represented the first back-to-back winning seasons since 1994 and 1995.

Curtain Call Debut With his first-inning grand slam against Evansville on Feb. 19, Eli Hynes became the first Tiger to homer on the first pitch of his first U of M atbat since Joey Lieberman did so in 2006. Hynes’ blast gave Memphis the lead for good at 4-1. Lieberman’s line shot on the first pitch of his first Memphis at-bat gave the Tigers a 7-6 10-inning win over Notre Dame.

Since coming to Memphis, Schoenrock has brought in three nationally-ranked recruiting classes, while seven Tigers have been drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Eight players have gone on to play professional baseball either through the draft or free agency.

Grand Debut Eli Hynes wasn’t the only Tiger making noise in their U of M debut against Evansville on Feb. 19. Freshman Bryan Picou went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Picou drove the first pitch he saw to left field for and RBI-double in the first inning. He added an RBI-single in the fourth. Fellow freshman Sam Moll fanned the first batter he faced in an inning of relief on Feb. 21 against Evansville.

Fast Starters Memphis has proven to be just that after the first series of the season. The Tigers struck for 13 runs in the first inning during the three-game series with Evansville to open the season. Memphis collected 13 hits in the opening frame, including pounding out five hits in the first inning of the Feb. 19 season-opener. When the Tigers plate a first inning run this season, Memphis is 5-0. When Memphis scores first, the Tigers are 4-0, but the U of M is 2-4 when the opponents score first. Here’s a look at Memphis’ first-inning production. Game 1 2 3 5 8

All In The Family This year’s edition of Tiger baseball showcases a unique twist for head coach Daron Schoenrock. This roster features a second Schoenrock, as Daron’s son Erik is a freshman left-handed pitcher on the 2011 squad. Tigers Hit For Cycle In First Inning Memphis sent 10 batters to the plate in its sixrun first inning on Opening Day against Evansville. Tough Schedule The Tigers 2011 schedule is one of the most challenging slates since head coach Daron Schoenrock’s arrival in 2005. This year’s schedule features 29 matchups against 12 teams that posted 30 or more wins a year ago and seven tilts versus 40-win programs (Arkansas, Auburn and Rice). Memphis will play 13 games against 2010 NCAA Tournament teams, seven of which will be played at home.

Experience Matters After being the less-experienced club for the last two seasons, the Tigers have turned the tables and will now boast one of the league’s most experienced rosters in 2011. Memphis position players have a combined 688 games and 633 starts under their belts. They have produced over 750 hits in just over 2,200 official at-bats. The Tigers also have experience on the mound. The squad’s seven returning pitchers have amassed 324 strikeouts in 371 innings of work. The crew has made 160 appearances and 44 starts, collectively.

A Taste Of Memphis The 2011 Memphis roster features a wealth of home-grown talent. Of the 32 players on the club, 17 are from the Memphis area.

Tigers Sweep Evansville The 3-0 start is the 20th time a Memphis team has started the season with three-straight wins. It is the second such start under head coach Daron Schoenrock and the program’s first since 2006. Memphis opened the 2006 season with wins over Alabama (2-0 at Alabama) and Oklahoma (2-1 in the Service Academies Classic). The Tigers finished 32-28 that year. No team to start out 3-0 has ever finished below .500. The Tigers outscored the Purple Aces 38-19 and hit .448 as a team on the weekend. The 38 runs scored is the most in a 3-0 start since 1991, when Memphis plated a combined 40 runs in wins over Harding, Missouri-St. Louis and Arkansas State.

POLLING PLACE BASEBALL AMERICA

Double Duty Not only do the Tigers excel on the field, but they excel in the classroom as well. The team recorded a program-best 3.278 GPA in the fall 2010 semester.
