1999 SEASON PREVIEW

TIGER SOCCER

1999: THE NEXT STEP?

T

ie 1999 University of Memphis Tiger soccer season may answer some of the questions that have been lingering in the minds of many. Can an experienced team with ten returning starters use that experience to build on the 1998 success and reach even higher levels? Can this team remain hot after winning four of the last five contests in 1998 while reaching the final of the Conference USA Tournament? Can Steven Brooks continue his 1998 scoring prowess? But most importantly, can and will the Tigers come together under their new coach, Richie Grant, and take the next step, a CUSA title? "This is going to be a team that's very well led," Grant said. And this leadership comes from one thing, a big returning class, which in turn means a lot of experience. "It's very hard to beat experience and these lads are returning with a lot of it," he continued. Grant begins his U of M career with a side that was just one step away from a miraculous end to the 1998 year. He inherits a veteran club that returns five seniors including goalkeeper Brian Covey. The Collierville native and Houston High School standout has seen everything a Tiger can see, starting 56 games over the past three seasons. He's made 275 saves and has a career 1.52 goals against average, good for third and second respectively, in the U of M's career record book. Covey was named to C-USA's all-freshman team in 1996 and earned C-USA Player of the Week honors in November of that

year. During that fabulous freshman campaign, Covey recorded nine shutouts, including five in a row, while posting a 1.08 GAA. If Covey can keep the ball out of the net and senior forward Steven Brooks can put it in, the Tigers could be very successful in 1999. Brooks scored 14 goals last year, the second most in the conference. He had four game winning goals and took a teamhigh 50 shots leading the Tiger attack that outscored opponents 35-29. And was the third team all-conference selection ever hot during the Tigers' late-season run. He scored five goals in the last five games including the Tigers' final three final tallies of the year. Brooks was tabbed as a pre-season all-conference pick as well. Aiding Brooks up front is junior Tommy White. White has scored seven goals in his U of M career and has seven assists as well, five of which came in 1998. The one piece to the Memphis attack that does not return is Matt Briggs. Briggs started each of the Tigers' 20 games in 1998, scoring six goals. He was named to the allconference third-team and earned GTE AllAmerican honors for his sucess in the classroom as well as on the field. Grant returns three other seniors to the 1999 team: Brandon Crossett, Joey Lewis and Philip Thiele. All three have made impacts for the Tigers in their careers at their respective positions of forward, midfielder and defender and should continue to do so this year. And if Grant didn't have enough experienced seniors on the field, he returns seven juniors as well. In addition to White, Richard Keene is back after leading the team in assists with seven last year. He started 18 games last year and had a pair of assists in the conference tournament run. Another junior that returns in 1999 is Ryan Schwaigert. The Germantown HS alumnus was named the C-USA Tournament Defensive MVP last year. With all of this experience and

a new coach who will be looking to see what the players can do, expect a lot of competition for playing time and the starting jobs. "I watched a lot of them play when I was recruiting at Lambuth and they're defmently a bunch of quality players," Grant said of his knowledge of the Tigers' abilities. The youth of the 1999 side will come from redshirt freshmen Darren Bevard and Todd Gingrich. Both players bring a winning attitude to their teams after championship runs in high school. "Being in the conference final last year, was a great experience for all players to go through," Grant said. "We can only hope that if we are in that situation this year, we can possibly go one step furthur and win that game." And that simply is the next step.

The Schedule The Tigers begin the 1999 campaign by hosting the Diadora Midwest Classic on Sept. 4 and 5. Joining Memphis will be Southwest Missouri State, Centenary and Western Illinois. After a C-USA opener with UNC Charlotte, the Tigers travel to Oneonta, N.Y., to participate in the Hartick Nike Shootout. The Tigers return home for a Sept. 22 battle with cross-town rival Christian Brothers before heading out on a four game road-swing. Two of the next three contests are home conference games before a final two-game road swing. The Tigers then wrap up the regular season with a three-game home stand.

LATE-SEASON RUN SENDS TIGERS TO CONFERENCE USA TITLE MATCH

A

pair of shutouts propelled the University of Memphis into the title game of the Conference USA Championship, highlighting the 1998 season. The Tigers entered the post-season tournament as the championship's numberseven seed but a double-overtime, 1 -0 upset of regular-season co-champion Saint Louis sent the U of M on to Tampa, Fla., for the tournament's final four. In Tampa, Memphis shutout Marquette 3-0 to advance to the championship game against host South Florida. The U of M's late-season run came to an end as South Florida built a 4-0 lead en route to a 4-2 victory for the championship and C-USA's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Memphis' season got off to a rocky start as the Tigers lost to 23rd-ranked Southwest Missouri 1-0 and at Western Illinois 2-1 in overtime at the Kelme Klassic. The Tigers rebounded to win the UNLV Snickers/Fila Rebel Classic by posting a pair of 2-1 victories over host UNLV and UC Santa Barbara. Junior Steven Brooks scored both of the Tigers' goals in the UCSB match for his fourth career multi-goal game. He was named the Conference USA Co-Offensive

Player of the Week. Memphis opened league play the following week by escaping Tampa with a 3-3 tie against South Florida. Taylor Stirling's goal in the match's 75th minute knotted the score after the Bulls had taken a 3-2 lead with a pair of goals which came less than two minutes apart. Brooks recorded the U of M's first goal against USF and two days later scored a hat trick in a 5-1 win over Central Arkansas. Four shutout losses in the month of October would leave the Tigers with a 6-8-1 record heading into the season's final weeks. In Memphis' final home match of the year at Echles Field, lone senior Matt Briggs scored two goals in a 5-1 victory over Western Kentucky. Junior goalkeeper Brian Covey had eight saves in a 3-0 shutout of Christian Brothers as the Tigers evened their record at 8-8-1 heading into the conference tournament. In Saint Louis, Tiger sophomore Taylor Stirling broke a scoreless tie with 7:28 remaining in the second overtime as Memphis upset the ninth-ranked Billikens in the first round of the C-USA tournament. Covey

stopped five second-half shots to help send the match into overtime. Ryan Schwaigert, who had two assists in the Tigers' 3-0 semifinal win over Marquette, was named the Most Valuable Defender for the Conference USA Tournament. With its win over Marquette, Memphis became the lowest seed ever to advance to the C-USA championship match. In addition to Schwaigert's honors, both Brooks and Briggs were named third-team all-Conference USA. Brooks finished the season with 14 goals while Briggs ended his career with a six-goal, two-assist senior season. In addition to all-conference honors Briggs was named third-team GTE Academic All-America. He received his bachelor's degree in marketing management last December. He finished his academic career with a cumulative grade point average of 3.91, earning him summa cum laude honors. Briggs ranked second in goals and third in points in the final C-USA individual statics. Covey was second in the league in saves with 83.

TIGERS TRY OUT FOR NATIONAL TEAM, ONE IS SUCCESSFUL A pair of Univeristy of Memphis soccer players recently tried out for the Under-23 national team, and one was successful. Senior goalkeeper Brian Covey and junior defender Ryan Schwaigert made a trip to Portland, Ore. in August for the US Amateur Soccer Association's Festival. Both players were members of the South Regional Team that posted a 2-2 record at the Tournament, both wins being shutouts. One of those shutouts was recorded by Covey who was noticed by the national team coaching staff and was selected to be a member of the U-23 National Team. Although Schwaigert was not selected, the experience he gained was invaluable and will help the Tiger defense tremendously in the 1999 season and beyond. Covey will be looking to use the experience and success he gained to lead the Tigers through 1999 and hopefully have the opportunity to play professionally and/or for future World Cup and Olympic teams.

1999 SEASON PREVIEW

LADY TIGER SOCCER

LADY TIGERS BEGIN NEW ERA WITH NEW MOTTO

W

ith the departure of five graduating seniors, the 1999 season begins a new era for the University of Memphis Lady Tigers. And with this new era comes a new team motto; "Success is earned, not granted." Because three of these five departures have been with Lady Tigers' head coach Les Szabo since the beginning of the Lady Tiger program in 1995, he will be relying on some younger faces, including several newcomers to end the millennium on a high note. Two seniors that do return for the 1999 Lady Tiger campaign are Frances Currin and Meredith Smith. Currin, a Pensacola, Fla. native, will return to her goalkeeping position after redshirting in 1998 due to a severe knee injury. Currin is the U of M's all-time saves leader with 230 and will try to regain the form she had in 1997 when she posted a 1.83 goals against average with four shutouts. Currin will be challenged for the starting position by sophomore Jennifer Simon who played in eight games for the Lady Tigers in 1998. She posted a 2.25 GAA and had 1.7 shutouts. Smith, a senior and Memphis native, will be looking to regain the form she showed in her freshman season of 1996 when she recorded 11 goals en-route to Conference USA all-freshman honors. Smith's production had

dropped off in 1997 and 1998 but will be called upon in '99 to take over the leadership of the Memphis goalkeepers. Smith's 14 career goals places her fourth on the all-time list, behind the three Lady Tigers who finished their stellar four-year careers in 1998. (Jodi Fisher, Christy Caswell and Jennifer Vossen) Aiding Smith up front will be forward/ midfielders Candice Spiniolas and Suzanne Williams. Williams, a sophomore in 1999, has played in 17 games, tallying three goals. Spiniolas, a junior scored three goals in 1998, the second most among returners. But what the Gary, 111., native and Valparaiso transfer can do is score goals when they count the most. In fact, Spiniolas led the 1998 edition of the Lady Tigers with two game-winning goals. She scored the lone goal in a 1-0 road win at Saint Louis and made the most of her first of 14 career U of M starts scoring a pair of goals in the 9-0 destruction of UT-Martin. The U of M midfield will be led by juniors Nicole Bates-Earner and Michele Meehan along with sophomore Michelle Meduri. Bates-Earner has started 36 games in her two previous seasons, all starts and has scored two goals and assisted on three others, primarily from a defensive type position. Meehan scored her first career goal in a 1998 6-0 shutout of Louisville and has 39 games of collegiate experience to help lead theUofM. The defenders are young in 1999 but

do include juniors Tori Winslett and Jackie Horton, a transfer from the University of Kansas. Winslett and Horton do have plenty of collegiate experience as Winslett has appeared in 32 games for the Lady Tigers, scoring six goals and posting five assists. Horton made 31 appearances while scoring one goal each season for the Jayhawks. Szabo also returns sophomores Jennifer Thiele and Stephanie Vossen to the defense. Thiele appeared in each of the Lady Tigers' 18 contests last season, starting half of them. She recorded her lone point of the year, an assist, in the win over UT-Martin. Szabo also hopes that the newcomers led by Becca Amrozowicz (Strongville, Ohio) and Erin Rothrock (Kingsport, Tenn.) can make an immediate impact and help the Lady Tigers earn the success, that the youthful team hasn't been granted, at least not yet...

The Schedule The Lady Tigers schedule will test the The U of M then ends September with trips to Marquette and DePaul before youthful team. Monaghan was a three-year starter for the Tigers after transferring from the University of Evansville following his freshman season. A former prep standout for Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Monaghan returned to his hometown and became an immediate impact on the Tiger Soccer program. Monaghan's superb goaltending in 1992 led Memphis to a schoolbest 14-3-2 record and the co-championship of the Great Midwest Conference. Of the 14 wins the Tigers posted in 1992, 11 came via a Monaghan shutout, the largest single-season total by a Tiger goalkeeper. Monaghan finished the 1992 season with an amazing goals against average of 0.80. In 1993, Monaghan helped lead the Tigers to the Great Midwest Conference Tournament crown and the team's first ever berth in the NCAA tournament. While at Memphis, Monaghan played for the U-20 national team. At Christian Brothers High School, Monaghan anchored a Purple Wave squad that won two Tennessee State championships. The goalkeeper received the highest accolade for a prep player when he was named a high school all-American after his 1991 season. He was also a two-time all-state performer for David Deitrich at CBHS. He currently serves as the full time goalkeeper coach for the Germantown Soccer Association.

S

tephen Fuller enters his second season as the Lady Tigers manager. The senior from Collierville, Tenn., will graduate with his bachelor's degree in marketing and management this December. He has played soccer and has coached as well. He is originally from Brandon, Miss, and graduated from Brandon High School.

LADY TIGER SOCCER

1998 SEASON MARKS CAREERS' END FOR THREE LADY TIGER PIONEERS

T

o know the history of the University of Memphis soccer program, one only has peer into the eyes of fouryear letterwinner Christy Caswell. Up until this point in the history of Lady Tiger soccer Caswell has seen it all, literally. Caswell was one of three players at Memphis when the team began intercollegiate play back in 1995 who last November saw their four-year careers come to an end. Joining Caswell as the only four-year letterwinners in the history of the program were Jodi Fisher and Jennifer Vossen. But what makes Caswell unique is she is the only player to have started all 80 matches in the history of the U of M program. She finished her career as Memphis' all-time assist leader with 32. Fisher played in 79 matches over four seasons and closed out her career as Memphis' all-time goal scorer with 33. She also holds the career mark for points scored with 92. Vossen, who played in 75 career matches, tied Caswell's career goal tally as both players scored 18 goals during Memphis' first four collegiate seasons. Memphis opened the year with a 2-0 shutout at home against Rhodes College, extending a home field winning streak to six matches. Freshman Leila Moghim gave the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first half off an assist from fellow freshman Suzanne Will-

iams. Jodi Fisher, who also assisted on Moghim's goal, would add a second-half insurance goal for the Lady Tigers. The shutout was goalkeeper Heather Chinellato's fifth of her career. Memphis would run its home winning streak to seven with a 4-1 win over Chattanooga. Also in the opening month of the season, Memphis would score a team-record seven, first-half goals in a 9-0 win over Tennessee-Martin. Tori Winslett scored two goals in the win and three during the week while Candice Spiniolas and Moghim also scored twice in the win over UT-Martin. Dr. V. Lane Rawlins President Brigham Young, 1963 Since becoming president of The University of Memphis in 1991, Dr. V. Lane Rawlins has instituted positive changes in the areas of academics, administration and student affairs at the University. Further, he has gained the support of leaders from business, campus, and community in charting The U of M's path for the future. Under Dr. Rawlins' guidance, the University has put greater emphasis on innovative undergraduate education, on excellence in research and graduate education, on interpersonal communication and understanding, and on improving the internal workings of the University. Task forces he appointed have created fresh approaches to diversity, public image, planning and budgeting, research and scholarship, enrollment management, technology, and undergraduate education. One of the most important - and certainly the most visible - of Dr. Rawlins1 accomplishments has been the $26.5 million, Ned R. McWherter Library, which houses more than one million bound volumes and state-of-theart computer facilities.

limited to the campus. He also represents the University in the community, serving on a number of boards, a few of which include the Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Memphis, Goals for Memphis, Memphis Partners and Free the Children. In a wider venue, he was instrumental in the formation of Conference USA, a 12-member all-sports conference, and served as chairman of the Board of Directors in its first year. Dr. Rawlins also serves as Conference USA's representative on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors. Before coming to Memphis, Dr. Rawlins was vice chancellor of Academic Affairs for the University of Alabama system. Earlier he had spent 17 years at Washington State University, rising from an assistant professor of economics to chairman of the economics department to vice provost. The Rigby, Idaho, native earned his Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Brigham Young University in 1963 and his doctorate in economics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969. He has served in research positions with the Brookings Institution and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and as a consultant to the U.S. Dept. of Labor and the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. Dr. Rawlins has co-authored two books dealing with public service employment, written portions of 10 other books, and published a number of articles in professional journals.

ADMINISTRATION

Eighty-seven years ago, The University of Memphis began as a small state teacher's college. Today, The U of M is a major center for learning and research. "We were seeking an individual with people skills, as well as a deep caring about student-athletes and their futures. "We searched long and hard for someone whom we felt had the talents to fit The munity, someone who was well respected in NCAA circ es. We checked every resource that was available and feel that we could not have found a more qualified individual with a better record." Johnson initiated the start of a capital campaign to add a new 8,000-square-foot football and basketball office complex to the current Athletic Office Building, a new basketball practice facility and a complete renovation of the Murphy Athletic Complex on Memphis' south campus. The eight million dollar campaign is the largest fund raising effort in the history of Memphis athletics and should bring the Tiger athletic facilities on-line with Conference USA sister institutions. During the spring of 1999, Johnson negotiated one of the richest radio broadcast AM 79 in Memphis. The three-year agreement calls for WMC to pay the University approximately $1.2 million for football and men's basketball rights. CONFERENCE USA Comprised of 14 distinguished universities in 12 major television markets, the formation of Conference USA was considered by many a bold move. The union of 12 charter members was initially formed as a comprehensive Division I-A league and quickly capitalized on the strengths of its member institutions, building a strong foundation to make its mark on intercollegiate athletics heading into the 21st century. Conference USA (C-USA) includes founding members UAB, Cincinnati, DePaul, Houston, Louisville, Marquette, Memphis, UNC Charlotte, Saint Louis, South Florida, Southern Mississippi and Tulane, and football only members East Carolina and Army. C-USA member institutions span 13 states across the United States, more than any other Division I-A conference. The conference officially unveiled its name, logo and commissioner on April 24, 1995 at Harry Caray's Mike Slive Restaurant in Chicago. Commissioner Mike Slive was named the first commissioner of Conference USA by the presidents of the 12 institutions. Eleven of the institutions began athletic participation in 1995, while Houston joined competition in the fall of 1996. TIGER TRADITIONS

WHY TIGERS? When the University of Memphis first fielded a football team in the fall of 1912, no one had selected a nickname for the squad. Early references to the football team, tabbed them only as the Blue and Gray Warriors of West Tennessee Normal School. After the final game of the 1914 season, there was a student parade. During this event, several Normal students shouted, "We fight like Tigers." The nickname was born. More and more the nickname "Tigers" was used, particularly in campus publications. But it did not catch on with the newspapers downtown. They continued to use "Normals" or the "Blue and Gray" when referring to the University. Under coach Lester Barnard in 1922, Normal's football team gave a ring of truth to that old student yell about Tigers. The team adopted a motto - "Every Man A Tiger" and went on to score 174 points while allowing their opponents just 29 points. In the late 1920s, student publications and downtown newspapers began referring to the football team as the "Teachers" or "Tutors". The Tiger nickname would return. But not until 1939 was it finally adopted as the official nickname for the University of Memphis.

A BENGAL FOR A MASCOT For approximately 22 years, the sideline mascot for the University of Memphis athletics has been the Bengal Tiger. TOM II, the name of the current mascot, puts in personal appearances at all Tiger football games, as well as numerous basketball games. TOM II has also been seen at Tiger baseball, soccer and women's basketball games. The first tiger, purchased by the Highland Hundred (football booster group) in 1972, lived for 20 years and was housed at the Memphis Zoo. TOM died in February of 1992. The story of how the first Tiger cub arrived in Memphis is quite interesting. On November 9,1972, the baby tiger was placed in a dog kennel in Michigan City, IN, and flown to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. There it was placed aboard a Delta flight and arrived in Memphis at 3:00 AM. C. CleveTHE UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

land Drennon, an attorney and president of the Highland Hundred, approved a check for $ 1,500 to buy the animal, and TOM was taken to athletic director Billy Murphy's office for a press conference. In ceremonies at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, the Highland Hundred officially presented TOM to the University on November 11,1972. The zookeeper, at the suggestion of his daughter, called the little tiger, Shane. Once in Memphis, however, a contest was held to name the mascot. More than 2,500 entries came in to a committee chaired by Judge Harry Pierotti. The list ran from Spook, Sampson, Goliath, Bengo, Sultan, Sahib, Big Cat, Ptah, Touchdown, Sonny, and Shiloh to Bengie Wougie Bengal Boy from Tennessee. Finally, the judges reduced the list to two: Shane and TOM, for Tigers of Memphis. TOM won. During his first few months in Memphis, Bill Proctor housed the tiger in his garage, which was redecorated by the Highland Hundred. TOM was guarded by Proctor's hound dog. TOM II came to the University of Memphis in the fall of 1992 and is housed at his new home at Nixon Farms in Collierville, TN. His new home is 3500 square feet and includes two pools, a waterfall, heated and air conditioned den box and has seperately, a complete medical facility for his care and upkeep. The young tiger is nearly 500 pounds and is expected to be as large or larger than his predecessor, TOM, who was once the largest Bengal Tiger in captivity at 550 pounds.

SCHOOL COLORS The University of Memphis' official school colors of Royal Blue and Gray were selected in the early 1900s. The colors were chosen in an effort to show unity in a nation that was still recovering from the effects of the Civil War. The student body thought that by picking the colors of the North and the South, the school would show a togetherness among all students.

THE LOGO The University of Memphis' official logo has been redesigned by Craig Thompson, from Disciple Design in Memphis, TN. The original logo was an MSU with a leaping tiger coming out from behind the letters. The new logo is an "M" with a leaping tiger coming up over the center of the "M".
